Family Survival
*****Dream Sequence*****
“Aten!” Robbie called as he ran down the street as fast as he could in the pouring rain. “I'm coming to see you, Aten!”
A dark figure with spiky hair jumped out of the shadows. “You won't get to him in time, Robbie. Aten's dead.”
Robbie stepped back as he saw a glimmer of a shiny object in the figure's hands. “Aten's not dead! He's in the hospital and I am going to save him.”
A gun emerged from the shadows. “How can you help him when you can't even help yourself?”
Robbie narrowed his eyes and darted for his assailant. He grabbed the man's wrist and twisted, making the figure reveal himself.
“Yami?! I thought we defeated you!”
The pharaoh chuckled. “Nobody can defeat me. I'm not through with you and your so-called husband yet.”
Robbie let out a breath of air as he was tackled to the ground by Yami. “I'm not going to let you hurt him anymore!”
Robbie kicked the pharaoh in the gut and grabbed the pharaoh's weapon. He pointed it angrily at the pharaoh and struggled to his feet using his cane. “Tell me why I should let you live after what you've done to Aten and his family?”
“You can't kill me, Robert. I am eternal.”
Robbie fingered the trigger. “It would be worth my while to try. How could you cause so much pain to many people and lay there with a smirk on your face?”
“Because, Robert….I have learned one thing from being pharaoh in Egypt.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes and pointed the gun at Yami's head. “Oh yeah? And what would that be?”
A loud bang rang out and Robbie's eyes opened wide.
The gun fell to the concrete and bounced towards Yami.
Robbie looked down and saw his blue and white striped shirt staining red. He covered the area with his right hand and fell to his knees. His cane fell beside him as he dropped to his hands and knees.
Yami grabbed the gun and stood up. He pushed Robbie onto his side and pointed the gun. “In Egypt, you always had to have someone watching your back.”
Robbie opened his eye to see Eric standing above him with a smoking gun. Robbie blinked as the pouring rain fell down on him. His blood mixed with the puddle under him.
“I knew one day I would get you, Morgan….I knew it.”
Robbie panted heavily as the pain in his stomach grew. “Eric….”
Yami grinned. “Eric was watching my back….He's such a good little minion.”
Robbie laid his head on the concrete as his vision started to fade. “I've got to get to Aten…..”
Eric laughed. “Aten? You're no good to him here.” Eric kicked Robbie's bad leg, making the other teen whimper. “You're nothing but worm-food now, Morgan! My father will be proud of me. I've taken one more ass-fucker off this planet.”
“I say we sacrifice him,” Yami said. “Ammut could use another soul to devour.”
Eric chuckled. “Are you kidding? This ass-fucker isn't good enough for the likes of the gods.”
Robbie rolled over on his stomach and struggled to his hands and knees. “Must…..get….to….Aten….”
Eric narrowed his eyes and kicked Robbie's hips. “Where the fuck do you think you're going?”
“Aten…..”
Eric stepped back and shot Robbie in the hip, making the victim collapse onto the ground screaming.
“HELP! HELP!”
Yami grinned. “Nobody will help you, Robbie……”
“SOMEONE HELP ME!”
A roll of thunder accompanied another round of bullets into Robbie's side and shoulder.
Robbie collapsed on the ground, panting and bleeding heavily. The pouring rain drenched his blood-stained shirt and pants.
A weak moan came from Robbie as he laid on his stomach.
“You deserve what you are getting, Morgan. You die alone. In the rain.”
Eric kicked Robbie onto his side. “Just to make sure that I did the job right….” Eric walked up to Robbie and fired a shot…..
**** End Dream*****
Robbie sat up quickly. His chest rose and fell sharply. The bed beside him was empty….something he hated when he would have a bad dream. His rest was always disrupted when Aten was not around.
The monkey that Robbie had held as he fell asleep had been tossed against the room. The covers on his bed had been kicked off and his sheets were wet from sweating. His cane had been knocked down.
Robbie fell back on his bed and covered his eyes. “What a nightmare!”
He lifted his shirt and looked down at his sleek stomach. He touched his stomach and it didn't hurt.
“It was all a dream.”
Robbie rubbed his stomach and wiped his wet forehead again.
“Robbie!” Miranda called from downstairs. “Breakfast is ready!”
“Okay, mom! Be right there!”
Robbie rolled out of bed and picked his cane off of the floor. He slipped on a pair of boxers and a white shirt and ran his fingers through his black curly hair. He used his cane to steady himself as he picked up Aten's monkey. He set it on the side table with a sigh.
“Please live, Aten…..”
Robbie limped down the stairs slowly and into the kitchen.
“Hi, son. How'd you sleep?”
“Bad dreams last night.”
Miranda walked up to Robbie and rubbed his back. “I can imagine. The last couple days were difficult on you, Robbie.”
Robbie nodded and rubbed his eye. “Yes, it has.”
“Rob, I know things are looking really bad now, but things will get better.”
Robbie looked up at his father. “How?”
Daniel blinked.
“How can they get better? Aten is dying. He has an incurable disease. Now they're telling me he has a broken neck and the back of his skull is split. How could things possibly get better for me? Aten not dying? That's not going to happen. Aten's neck healing? His health returning? Aten's not going to have the health that I have…so, I've come to accept it.”
Miranda placed some toast and eggs on a plate. “Robbie, you'll feel better when you eat.”
“Sorry, mom. I lost my appetite.”
Robbie limped into Aten's studio and closed the door behind him. He limped to the couch and sat down. Robbie reached over and pushed `Play' on the CD player.
Aten's favorite song, “The Moonlight Sonata”, began to play.
Robbie placed his cane between his legs and he leaned on it. He looked up, hoping to see Aten painting away with that serious, contemplative look in his eyes at some times…..and other times his eyes would be blank….as if he were not the one manipulating the brush.
Robbie leaned his head on his cane and looked down at the floor. `Aten…..I wish there was something I could do to bring you home….something that will bring you back to me for good….something…..anything.'
A knock sounded on Aten's studio door. “Robert?”
“Not now, dad. I wanna be alone.”
“Robbie, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you mad, son.”
Robbie rubbed his eye. “Come in.”
Aten's studio door opened and he saw his father come in from the corner of his eye. Daniel looked around at the painting on Aten's easel, his paints still lined in order for their owner to continue.
Daniel slowly approached his son and sat down. “It's a nice place in here.”
Robbie nodded and looked up. “Aten's spider plant needs to be watered. I'll have to do that later.”
“Robbie, it's not easy taking care of a loved one who is sick….it's even harder not being able to do anything about it.”
“You don't know the half of it, dad.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow. “I don't? I seem to recall a young Miranda Morgan being left alone with a baby with a clubbed foot and a dying toddler while her husband was away from home.”
Robbie sighed and lowered his head. “……You're right….Mom went through this.”
“I went through it, too, Robert. It wasn't easy doing what I had to do. I knew there was nothing I could do or say that would help your mother with you or Christa. You had colic and were crying every night….Christa cried from her pain, despite the painkillers. Your mother had a lot of courage, Robbie. It wasn't easy, but she worked through everything. I love your mother. She is a very strong woman.”
Robbie reached over and took his father's hand. “I want to be brave like her.”
Daniel squeezed his son's hand. “Robbie, you are. You have always been and will always be our brave little soldier.”
“Thanks, dad.”
Daniel nodded. “Anytime, son. I can take you to go see Aten if you want later on.”
Robbie smiled. “Yes. I'd like that, dad.”
*******************************
Umi knocked on the door gently. He saw the light on in the living room. He shook off some rain water as it poured down on him. “YUGI! GLENN!”
The short duelist opened up the door. “Hi, Umi. Come in out of the rain.”
Umi stepped inside and wiped his eyes free of rain water. “Thanks. It's pouring out there! I don't mind the water, but not when it's raining buckets.”
Glenn walked out of the kitchen and up to Umi. “Hi, Umi! How is Aria?”
Yugi smiled wide. “Yeah, Umi, tell us!”
“She's fine and the baby is fine.”
“What did she have?” Glenn quickly asked.
“What is its name?” Yugi added.
Umi laughed. “Okay! Okay! One at a time! We have a boy. We named him Rhett Bakura Tsunami.”
Yugi smiled. “Congratulations, Umi!”
Glenn hugged Umi. “That is wonderful news! And mother and baby are doing well?”
“Better than ever. I think Aria's just glad to have it over with. She was worried about her Yami Powers and her pregnancy. She didn't want her powers to harm the baby.”
Yugi's smile faded. “The baby isn't hurt, is he?”
“Oh, no. He's fine, Yugi. Ten fingers. Ten toes. He's good. How about Kai?”
Glenn took Umi's soaked jacket. “It took a long time to calm him down and get him to sleep.”
Yugi nodded. “I read a book to him to help him calm down.”
“I tried to sing him a song and it didn't work.”
Umi sighed. “Well, he was just through a difficult experience. It's no surprise he had a hard time going to sleep.”
Glenn nodded. “He managed to have some carrot sticks, though, when he came home. He was hungry.”
“Some father I am……”
“Umi, it's not your fault. You did all you could. Kai will be okay. We made sure he was well taken care of when he came here.”
“Still……I need to see him.”
Glenn nodded. “He's upstairs….in Yami's old room.”
“You put him there?!” Umi gasped in disbelief.
“We fixed it up!” Yugi exclaimed. “It looks nothing like it did when Yami lived here. He's not coming back here, so there's no reason in me keeping his room the way it was.”
Umi yawned and sighed. “Sorry, Yugi….I'm a little edgy.”
“You haven't slept, Umi….and you had the birth of your baby boy and taking care of Aria. You have a lot on your plate now. Just know that we'll keep Kai for as long as you need us to.”
“Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.”
Umi walked up the stairs and turned right. He walked to the door at the end of the staircase and found the door opened slightly. He cautiously peeked an eye in and found his small child laying in the bed clutching a Great White plushie.
Umi opened the door slowly and crept in. He walked with light footsteps to where his little boy slept. The moonlight fell on Kai's arm, however his face remained shrouded by the shadow of the night.
The tiny fingers twitched with his sleep. His arms wrapped around his plushie tightly as he breathed shallow.
“I'm sorry, Kai,” Umi whispered as he ran his fingers through his son's white and blue hair. “I'm sorry you had to see what you did. I guess…..parents can screw up sometimes. I'm so sorry that I had to expose you to that.”
The little boy continued to sleep peacefully. The little boy turned over and continued to sleep. Umi watched his son's back rise and fall with his breathing.
“I wanted to be a good daddy to you, Kai. I tried so hard.”
Umi sat on the bed beside his son and reached out to touch his back.
“Daddy?”
Umi smiled a little. “Hello, Little Minnow.”
The little boy slid closer to Umi and hugged him. “I missed you, Daddy.”
Umi sat on the bed and pulled his son onto his lap. “I missed you, too, son.” The father kissed his son's forehead. “I heard you were a good boy for Yugi and Glenn.”
“Yes, but I was afraid to go to sleep.”
Umi cuddled his son close. “I know you were, Kai. But mommy is okay now and you are safe. Everyone is safe.”
“How is Unkie Aten?”
Umi shifted his eyes. “He's sleeping. He's very tired after what happened, so we are going to give him a few days to relax before we go see him, okay? After that we'll see if he's strong enough for us to see him.”
“How is mommy?”
Umi smiled and hugged Kai. “You are now a big brother, Kai.”
Kai gasped. “Mommy had my baby brother?!”
“Yes, Kai, the baby is a boy.”
Kai clapped. “I wanna go see the baby!”
“It's late, son. And it's time for all good little minnows to sleep so they can be awake and be good for their daddy fish.”
Kai pouted. “But I wanna go see mommy.”
“Sorry, Little Minnow. Maybe in the morning after a good night's sleep. I'll take you to the toy store to pick out a toy for the baby. How's that sound?”
Kai smiled wide. “I'D LOVE TO!”
Umi stood up and tucked his son in bed. “Then you have to try and go to sleep like a good little boy.”
Kai yawned. “I'll try.”
“I'm sorry, but you can't,” Glenn was heard speaking loudly.
“What's that? Who's Unkie Genn speating to?” Kai asked, a little fear in his voice.
“Daddy will take care of this, Kai. Go to sleep, baby boy.”
Umi kissed Kai one last time and closed the door as he left the room. Umi ran down the steps and saw Seto and Joey standing in the doorway.
“Come on, Yug….you know Seto wouldn't try and hurt Kai.”
Glenn narrowed his eyes. “He did that right in front of your eyes, Joey! He tried to kill Kai's mom! What makes you think Seto wouldn't try the same with Kai?”
“What's going on here? My kid is trying to sleep upstairs.”
Seto looked up at Umi, his eyes bloodshot and his hair dripping with rain. “I have to speak with you.”
“Don't waste your breath,” Umi said flatly. “Anything you say will fall on deaf ears.”
“Umi, don't be angry with me. I did what I had to.”
Joey jumped back as Umi's fist connected with Seto's jaw, knocking him down.
“I want nothing to do with you, Seto!”
Kendall removed his pistol from his belt and clicked it.
“No, Ken!” Seto exclaimed as he wiped his chin. “Don't shoot him.”
“But, Mr. Kaiba, he struck you!”
“Just help me up.”
Kendall grabbed Seto's arm and helped him get to his feet. Seto wavered on his feet and wiped his bleeding lip.
“Why are you blaming me? I did it to save Joey's life. Wouldn't you do the same for Aria if her life were in danger?”
Umi nodded. “I'd do anything to save her!”
Seto wiped his chin. “I rest my case. I can see talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. I'll leave now….I have a company to run.”
Umi watched Seto leave with Joey in tow. `I would do anything to save Aria and the kids from harm……maybe I was too hard on Seto…'
********************************
Aria opened her eye as she heard the door to her hospital room open. “What do you want?”
“Mrs. Tsunami, Rhett is keeping the other boys awake.”
“Feed him.”
The nurse chuckled. “He won't eat the formula.”
“Change him.”
“We've changed his diaper. He's dry.”
“Sing to him.”
“Mrs. Tsunami, our staff is quite busy trying to lull the other baby boys to sleep. Can you take him?”
Aria yawned and opened her arms. “Yeah, give him to me.”
Aria took the baby boy in her arms and rocked him. “What's the matter, my Little Rhett? My boy keeping all the other babies awake?”
The baby began to cry.
“This is going to be a long night,” Aria yawned as she rocked her baby. She pulled out her breast and placed the nipple by the baby's mouth. “Come on, Rhett. You've gotta be hungry by now.”
The baby slowly began to feed and she rested her head back against her pillow. She stroked the baby's cheek. “That's a good boy,” she smiled and yawned.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.”
Joey walked into the room slowly. “Aria, can I talk to you?”
“Sure, come in if you don't mind me breastfeeding.”
Joey slowly entered the room and closed the door behind him. Aria pulled a blanket over her breast to keep Joey from feeling embaressed.
“Aria, are you still mad at Seto?”
Aria sighed. “He betrayed me. He betrayed Aten. I hear my brother is in critical condition. Every fiber in my body hates Seto now. He hurt Aten. He almost killed my baby and myself.”
“But, Aria, Seto was just a pawn in Yami's sick, twisted game! You can't fault him for trying to save me!”
“Joey…..he tried to kill Rhett. He tried to kill my brother…..and he helped Yami who hurt my mother and father. How can I forgive someone who helped that pharaoh?”
Joey sighed. “Aria, he was doing that to save me.”
Aria cradled Rhett close to her. “He tried to kill my baby.”
“Aria, Yami deceived a lot of people in his time…..alot of people. He used many people to get what he wanted and stepped over whomever he perceived as a threat.”
“How was my father a threat?”
“He was a thief and a murderer, Aria.”
Aria narrowed her eyes. “Only because Yami made living conditions unbearable! You would steal and kill for food if it meant your survival. Don't tell me you wouldn't kill someone if you were starving….or if your family was starving. If you and Seto were dirt poor living in the streets, I'm sure you would do ANYTHING to keep your lover and your children fed. Don't tell me you wouldn't, because I know you would. Hell, even I would! If my husband, Rhett, and Kai were starving and we were in the street, you better believe I would be the first one to grab my father's dagger and make nightly use of it to feed my family. I love my family that much. I would kill for them.”
Joey looked up at Aria. “But that is what Seto was doing.”
Aria stopped and looked down at the sheets.
“Seto was doing what he could to keep me alive. He was willing to kill so that I would live. But it just happened to be that Yami wanted him to kill you and Aten. If Seto could have chosen his victims…..I know it wouldn't have been either of you. Aria…..Seto never had a loving family growing up. I, Mokuba, Jaimen….we've been the only family he's ever had. You are very important to him and I know it hurt him more than you know to have to face up against you in that duel. You know that wasn't an easy decision for him, but he did what he had to do.”
Aria was quiet as she rubbed Rhett's back. “Ummm…..Joey…..”
“Yes, Aria?”
“…I wish to be alone.”
Joey stood up and nodded. “Okay, Aria. Have a good day.”
“Thank you.”
Joey left and closed the door behind him.
Aria cradled Rhett close to her and sighed. `Uncle Seto's always been nice to me…..and Joey's right….I would kill if my family was starving. I'd do anything for my babies and Umi. I wouldn't risk sacrificing their lives. I would do anything to keep them safe and happy….like my mother did for Aten when they were kidnapped. I know Joey and Seto love each other very much. It only goes to show that Seto would want to protect him.'
Aria looked down at her sleeping baby. “I owe Seto an apology…..”
