Confusion
Robbie held Aten's hand and rubbed it. Aten lay in the bed quietly, his eyes focusing and unfocusing. His skin felt cold and clammy. The teen's eyes would become foggy and, at times, looked like he was staring into space.
“Aten? Aten, can you hear me?”
Aten's eyes remained unfocused on the opposite wall of his room.
“It's going to be okay, Aten,” Robbie said. “I'll be here with you.”
The dark-skinned teen didn't respond.
Robbie sighed. “I'm going to go get a bite to eat, Aten. I'll be right back.” Robbie leaned down and kissed Aten's cheek, expecting a response. When he got none, he walked away with a sigh.
He put his hands in his pockets as he walked down the hallway. His eyes were focused on the ground until he heard a familiar shrill call for a nurse a few doors away from Aten.
`Is that who I think it is?'
Robbie ran to the door and saw a familiar girl sitting in the hospital bed with a hospital armband around her wrist.
“Rhonda?”
Rhonda's eyes narrowed and she crossed her arms defiantly. “Oh, it's you, Limpy! I didn't call for you.”
“What are you doing here?”
Rhonda rolled her eyes. “Like I'm really going to tell you, Morgan!”
“You look like shit. What happened to you?”
Rhonda pointed to the door. “Get the fuck out of here!”
Robbie saw her grab a bucket by her side and she threw up violently into it. “That's a mean bug you got there.”
Rhonda spit up and wiped her mouth with a towel. “It's not a bug, you retard!”
Robbie leaned on his cane. “I was just passing by. I didn't mean to interrupt your puking.”
“I don't need your pity!”
“Fine, then I guess I will be on my way.”
“Wait!”
“What now? I thought you didn't want me around.”
Rhonda ran her fingers through her dark hair. “I need a new puke bucket.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes. “Why should I get one for you? You've done nothing but make Aten's and my lives miserable! You're nothing but a bully!”
Rhonda crossed her arms and grinned. “What are you going to do about it, Morgan? Cry?”
Robbie walked up to her and saw her bloodshot eyes and her bluish skin. Rhonda began to tremble slightly as she smugly grinned at him. “Are you scared of me?”
“F—Fu—Fuck you!” she stuttered.
Robbie watched Rhonda twitch again and her arms became uncrossed. In the crease of her arms, she found needlemarks. `Those look like……' Robbie stepped back. `They looked the needlemarks I had after the men in that house injected me with heroin.'
*****Flashback*****
The man went to Aten first. He took the needle and injected some of the solution into Aten's arm.
Robbie struggled against his captor and focused on the green eyes staring down at him.
"Let me go!"
Aten slowly stopped struggling as the drug entered his system.
"What is that?" the man with green eyes asked.
"Heroin. I prepared it myself."
Aten slowly stopped struggling, and Robbie let out a growl.
The angry twelve year old kicked his assailant in the leg.
"Charlie, I can't hold him!"
The man with the needle held Robbie's head against the brick and injected the drug into the jugular vein in Robbie's neck.
"This will knock this punk out quick."
The boy moaned as he became limp.
***End Flashback***
Robbie felt a shiver all over and he rubbed his neck. “Rhonda…..were you taking drugs?”
Rhonda grabbed hold of the bed and twitched again. “None of your business!”
Robbie watched Rhonda's twitching and her breathing become very shallow. “Rhonda…..you took heroin, didn't you?”
“Go….away,” the girl said.
Robbie looked down and saw a little belly on Rhonda. “You're pregnant, too!”
“GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME, LIMPY!” Rhonda screamed wildly.
Robbie jumped back and shrugged. “Fine.”
Robbie limped away and down the hallway. “I never knew Rhonda was an addict. Come to think of it, I didn't know she was pregnant either. I wonder who's child it is.”
The teen limped to the cafeteria and grabbed a sandwich. He kept his ears open for a Code Blue in room 215.
Robbie rubbed his forehead as a headache set in. `I wish I could do something for Aten. I don't know what to do, though.'
“Well, well, well……”
Robbie looked up and saw Eric and Jason standing in front of him. He dropped his sandwich and narrowed his eyes. “What do you two punks want?”
“Fancy meeting you here, Morgan,” Jason said. “I would think you'd be home giving Aten the ass-pounding of a lifetime.”
Robbie stood up and leaned on his cane. “And I thought you would be home screwing your mom.”
Jason's skin turned beet red and he grabbed Robbie's shirt furiously. “You little fag!”
Eric nudged Jason with his elbow. “Fucking pigs are all around here, Jason. Don't do anything stupid.”
Jason spit in Robbie's face and pushed him away. “If I didn't have so much Bacon around here, Morgan, I'd slit your throat.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes. “You don't scare me anymore, Jason. Neither do you, Eric.”
Eric grinned. “Oh, you will fear me, Morgan. I promise you that. The last sight you will ever see is the smoking barrel of my pistol.”
“You can't scare me either, Eric.”
“We will see about that, Morgan. Like I said…..the last sight you will ever see is the smoking barrel of my pistol and me smiling down at your dying body.”
Jason poked Robbie angrily in the chest. “We'll get you when you least expect it, Morgan. And when we do, you will be alone.”
“One less faggot in this world to worry about,” Eric grinned.
“You don't scare me.”
Robbie stepped between the two boys to pass when Eric grabbed his arm.
“I'm really going to kill you, Morgan. Make no mistake about that.”
Robbie pulled his arm away. “You're not going to win, Eric. Make no mistake about that.”
Robbie limped between the two teens and back to Aten's room. He sat beside Aten's bed, his entire body shaking from his encounter with his two bullies.
“Aten?”
Aten's eyes shifted towards Robbie.
Robbie smiled. “Hello, baby. I'm glad to see you're back with me.”
“Robbie…Aria…….where?”
“You want to see Aria?”
A tiny line of drool came from the side of Aten's mouth. Robbie took a tissue and wiped the corner of his mouth.
“Do you want to see Aria?”
“Robbie…..Aria….Where?”
“Aten, do you want to see Aria?”
Robbie saw Aten's eyes unfocus and he was silent.
“Aten? Aten, can you hear me?”
Aten's eyes suddenly became wide. “Mom….?”
Robbie raised an eyebrow and looked behind him. Ryou was nowhere to be seen.
Aten reached out slightly with his unbroken arm. “Mommy?”
Robbie heard footsteps behind him and saw his father standing there. “Dad? He thinks I'm Ryou. What do I do?”
“He thought I was a guy named `Tim'. I had to leave the room because he started crying and screaming.”
Aten's eyes widened. “Mommy, you are so tall!”
Robbie leaned down and let Aten hug him.
“I thought you were gone! Tim was just here and he wanted to hurt me again! Mommy, don't let him hurt me anymore! Don't let him do bad things!”
“Aten, I am not Ryou. I'm not your mother.”
“I don't want grandfather to come in here…..I don't want him to make me hurt you again.”
Robbie's eyes widened. `What the hell is he not telling me about what happened when he was little?'
“I'm sorry I hurt you, mommy. I didn't mean to. Don't be mad and squish me like a little bug!”
Robbie pulled back from the hug and put his hands on Aten's shoulders. “Aten. I. am. Not. Your. Mother. I am your husband, Robbie! See? Robbie! Blue and white striped shirt. Jeans. Curly black hair. Blue eyes. Crucifix necklace. Gold wedding ring. White sneakers. Robbie.”
Aten swallowed hard. “I didn't mean to do what happened in the cabin, mommy! I didn't mean it! Please don't squish me! You're so tall!”
Robbie looked back and saw Dr. Zira standing at the door. “Aten, I have to go for a couple minutes. I'll be right back. Ummm…I'm not mad about what happened in the cabin.”
“Really?”
“Umm….yes. Really. I'm not mad. It wasn't your fault. And….umm….Mommy will be back in a couple minutes after he speaks to the doctor.”
Robbie walked to Zira and stood outside. “Okay, why does he think I am his mother and why does he keep saying that I'm gigantic? I don't think I've grown any. I'm still five foot four inches tall. Always will be.”
Dr. Zira pushed his glasses higher on his nose. “He's had damage done to his Occipital Lobe. He's going to have hallucinations and his vision will be distorted. In fact, he'll have visionary illusions where things appear bigger or larger than usual. I know Aten paints. This is going to distort his ability to match colors or even distinguish them.”
“But painting is Aten's life! He's been doing it for as long as I can remember!”
“He'll have a hard time with colors, Robbie. You may need to be there to help him.”
Robbie sighed and crossed his arms. “Sometimes Aten likes to be alone when he paints. I try not to bother him during his painting time because that is HIS time to be alone and do his thing. Besides, I work all day. How can I be there to help him if I'm at work?”
“Aten can still paint, but he'll have a harder time with color and his vision may not be as acute as it once was.”
Robbie sighed. “How come when I stand to the side of him, he just zones out? He doesn't seem to even realize I'm there.”
“Son, Aten just had a traumatic brain injury. Things have been jostled around in there.”
Zira nodded. “Not only that, Aten seems to have lost his peripheral vision in the right eye.”
Robbie leaned against the wall. He looked at the floor and blinked. “What else can go wrong?”
“Excuse me?”
Robbie lifted his head angrily at Zira. “What more can go wrong with him?”
“Robbie, I---.”
“My husband is dying and now you're telling me he can't tell colors, he can't see to the side of him, he has a broken neck and a broken arm? How much more can my husband take?”
“Robbie, I'm making Aten as comfortable as I can. Aten's broken bones will heal. His lesions and injuries need time to heal and he will be given all the therapy he needs to get back to doing his normal things.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes angrily. “I don't want to see my husband do his normal things! I don't want to see him take pills! I don't want to see him laying in bed, crying and clutching his heart in pain! I want to see my husband live! I want to see him happy! And I see you doing NOTHING to save his life! My husband is nothing but one fat paycheck for you, isn't it, Dr. Zira? My husband suffers and all you see are dollar signs!”
Daniel put a hand on Robbie's shoulder. “Now, Robert…..”
“Don't `Now Robert' me, dad! Dr. Zira, I'm getting tired of waiting for Aten's heart transplant! We've been waiting for two years!”
“Robert, the donors are not out there!”
“You mean to tell me NOBODY is a match for Aten? Nobody on this entire planet is a match?”
“Nobody is donating, Robert.”
Robbie stood up and leaned on his cane. “I'm tired of listening to excuses.”
Robbie disappeared into Aten's room.
Daniel watched his son sit by Aten's bed. “Sorry about that, Dr. Zira. Robbie's got a lot to be on-edge about.”
Zira nodded. “I'm doing all I can for him, Mr. Morgan.”
“I realize that.”
“Aten doesn't have much longer left. That can't be easy on him.”
Daniel shook his head. “No, it can't be.”
Zira walked into the room. “Robert, I have to examine Aten again.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes. “You stay away from him!”
“Rob, the doctor has to examine Aten,” Daniel said, standing behind Robbie.
Robbie growled. “I won't let you!”
Zira approached Robbie slowly. “You can watch me if you want, but I have to examine Aten's neck.”
Daniel put his hand on Robbie's shoulder. “Let the doctor do what he needs to.”
Robbie reluctantly moved aside, but kept a vigilant eye on his husband. He watched the doctor carefully touch the back of Aten's neck and inspect it.
“We'll need to take another X-Ray of your arm to see how it is healing.”
Robbie crossed his arms defiantly.
Daniel pat Robbie's shoulder. “We can stay here with him if you'd like.”
Robbie broke away from his father's hold and walked outside. He looked down the hall and saw Eric and Jason going into Rhonda's room.
Daniel stood by his son. “Robbie, don't you think you are being too hard on Dr. Zira?”
Robbie looked down at the floor. He leaned on his cane and felt his eyes fill with tears.
****Flashback****
“Aten, how can you not be angry? How can you accept your death so easily?”
Aten smiled over at his husband in bed. “Because I know that when my heart is judged against the feather of Ma'at, I will be let into paradise. I have suffered enough in this life, Robbie. I will be in paradise. I will feel no pain. I will no longer suffer. I will see the face of Ra and will be at peace.”
Robbie hugged his husband. “I want you to be at peace, Aten. But, also….I don't want you to leave me.”
Aten wrapped his arms around Robbie and kissed his forehead. “I will never leave you, love…..never.”
****End Flashback*****
“He always seemed so calm talking about it.”
“Calm about what, son?”
“Talking about how he was going to not be in pain anymore….He was never scared.”
Daniel put his arms around Robbie and held him. “God will do what is best for him, Robert. You have to believe that.”
“Why would God want him to suffer?”
“We can't understand why he makes people suffer. But Aten isn't afraid of what is eventually going to happen. Use his bravery as an inspiration. He is not afraid. Maybe you should try to build up that kind of courage in you, Robert.”
“You think so?”
Daniel nodded. “I know so.”
Robbie rested his head on his father's shoulder. “I'll try.”

*****Dream Sequence*****
Bakura's POV
I walked through the Shadow Realm alone. I looked around me, expecting to see the Man Eater Bug or one of my other monsters escorting me through the dark purple haze.
The coldness chilled me to the bone, the bitter wind blew across my skin.
“Hello?!” I called out to the darkness, hearing only my echo resonate through the void.
I continued to walk and saw a glimmer of light shining ahead of me. I ran towards it, hoping it would be someone or something I recognized.
“RYOU! MARIK! MALIK! ANYONE!” my voice called out ahead of me.
Being alone in the Shadow Realm was not good. I had spent five thousand years searching this void alone, hoping for a glimpse of my lover, Marik.
I never found him until Ryou possessed my Item and I was summoned.
My feet carried me towards the glimmering object quickly.
When I approached it, I stopped short.
The Castle of Dark Illusions had landed on the ground.
This thing usually hovers. Why has it landed?
I walked towards the drawbridge which had been lowered. Torches lit a dark hallway.
I heard angry screams and laughter.
I suddenly felt like I was on display.
“Who's there?! Come out and show yourself! Yami!”
Nothing answered me, but the laughter became louder.
“I'm not in the mood to play games!”
“YAMI! BAKURA! HELP!”
I heard Ryou call for me down the hallway and I bolted.
“I'm coming, Ry! Hold on!”
I ran down the hallway and heard the angry screams behind me.
“KILL HIM!”
“CAPTURE HIM!”
“GRAB HIM!”
I heard these angry voices all around me.
The hallway suddenly stopped and I turned around drawing my dagger from my boot. “Come on out, pharaoh! I'm ready for you!”
My eyes looked left and right. I was trapped in this hallway.
“Yami Bakura! At last we meet again!”
I looked around and growled.
That voice sounds familiar.
A piece of the hallway exploded, sending bricks and dust into the air. I crouched down and covered my mouth and nose with my blue shirt as the dust settled.
“Come in. Yami Bakura.”
I coughed and walked over the bricks to the gaping hole in the wall. I looked inside and saw a large golden room.
“Who are you? Where are you?”
I heard a roar behind me and turned around sharply.
The Berserk Dead Dragon stood behind me and snapped his jaws at me. I jumped back and whipped my dagger through the air.
“BACK, YOU BEAST! BACK!”
“Aww, Bakura. Don't go slicing my pet now.”
I turned my head and felt a pair of hands hold me. I saw the Old Vindictive Magician standing there holding my arms.
I struggled. “Get your hands off of me!”
“My, such energy.”
I whipped my head around and saw my archnemesis standing in front of me.
“Steven……..”
