Chapter 6: Sneak Out

"It's so unbelievable. I can't even begin to tell you how awesome it is." Joey took another bite from his tuna fish sandwich.

"Well Joey, you already told us all about it. I think we have a good enough picture to walk around there in the dark." Yugi smiled.

"Sorry it's all I can talk about. But it's so cool. Did I mention my own maid, driver, and security guard?"

"Three times." Yugi answered.

"Four. You went up to get a drink." Tea explained.

"Sorry." Joey apologized again.

"So what is Kaiba like at home?" Tea asked, taking a sip from her Diet Cola.

"Eh. I dunno. He's kinda the same. I don't really talk to him. 'Course, I've only been there one night." Joey shrugged.

"Can we change the subject please?" Tristan spoke up for the first time all lunch period.

"Sorry Trist. Didn't mean to upset you." Joey nearly whispered.

"What's the big deal Trist. It's pretty interesting to hear about." Yugi didn't mean to sound rude to Tristan, it just kind of came out that way.

"Whatever." with that Tristan stood up and walked out of the lunchroom.

"I wonder what's eatin' him." Joey shrugged and went back to his lunch.

Joey saw Seth waiting for him at the school gate at three minutes to three. The bell had just rung and he was still working his way out of last block. Joey looked around for Tristan, and when he couldn't find him, he sighed and walked down to the gate.

Tristan had been avoiding him ever since lunch. During PE he didn't even run laps with him (or skip class altogether with him) like they usually did. Joey had a feeling it was all the bragging he was doing about Kaiba's. But he couldn't figure out why that would be such a big deal to Tristan. So what if Joey lived in a huge house? Anything was better than living with his Dad. Though, even to Joey (especially to Joey) the whole situation was extremely suspicious.

After school Joey saw Tristan running home. Joey fled after him. "Trist!" he shouted, apparently Tristan didn't hear him (or chose not to listen).

Joey ran faster. "TRISTAN!" as he rounded the corner he caught up to Tristan and grabbed his arm. "Trist." he gasped out breathlessly. "Tristan . . . what's wrong?"

"Don't play stupid. Oh, hold up, you don't have to 'play'."

"What the fuck is your problem Trist?"

"You know damn well Joey."

"Look, I'm sorry I've been talking about Kaiba and his mansion a lot, but . . . it's just kind of scary."

"What?" Tristan leaned against the school fence.

"See, I'm worried about what Kaiba's got going. It freaks me out. So I think if I keep talking about it and make it seem really cool like I'm just staying at a hotel or somethin' then I'll be okay ya know? I dun know Trist." Joey leaned against the fence, mimicking Tristans pose.

"I didn't realize you were scared Joey. Why don't you tell me these things? That's what I'm here for."

"I dun know, guess I didn't wanna bug ya." Joey shrugged in his usual 'care free' manner. "Anyway, I got to go. Want a ride home?"

"No. I'll walk." Tristan still seemed angry (though now it seemed he had new reason.)

"'Kay. Later."

Joey wasn't happy as he began walking to the limo and as he was about to get in he heard a voice. "Joey!" Tristan caught up to him and spoke softer. "Why don't I come over tonight?"

"You can't. Kaiba won't let you."

"So I'll sneak out."

"You mean in?"

"Yeah. I'll sneak in." Tristan smiled devilishly. When he got a plan he rarely backed down.

"That's crazy. Kaiba has guards who watch that place like hawks. Worse then hawks they're like . . . mutant hawks."

"Come on Joey, don't worry so much. I'll see you around sevenish."

"Trist, I really don't think that's -"

"It's cool. Don't worry."

"You know Joey Sir, I could arrange for the guards to go on break at a seemingly random time." Seth spoke up from his standpoint. "If you like." he added, looking away as though he had said nothing.

Tristan nodded and gave Joey a puppy dog pout. "Fine." Joey sighed heavily. "Get the guards to go on break at six fifty five. If you're late Trist, I'm not covering for you."

"I'll be there."

~*~ 6:50 that night ~*~

"This is stupid Seth. I should call him and cancel this whole stupid thing."

"No Joey, I would not advise that."

"But he's gonna get caught and who knows what repercussions that'll take on."

"Please Joey Sir, do not worry."

Joey sat down on the couch, not wanting to look out the window any longer. He watched the minute hand on the clock move slowly toward the '11' signaling 6:55. He watched as Seth spoke into his microphone.

"Security." he waited for a static response. "Authorized break has been requested. All personnel to the staff room." another static response.

Seth looked out the window as the guards left. All but one. "I'll return shortly Joey Sir."

Seth left the room without looking back. Joey bit his bottom lip nervously as he waited for a sign that something had happened. He looked at the clock; Seven. He closed his eyes, something was wrong. The coffee break only lasted five minutes. This was not going well. Joey began pacing back and forth until he heard a knock on his door. He ran to the door and opened it.

"Surprise!" Tristan hugged Joey as he made his way into the room. "Wow, this is pretty cool."

"It worked!" Joey gasped in amazement.

"Yeah it worked. Seth took over for the guard who wouldn't leave and told me to wait by the pool in the bushes. So I did. Then when the rest of the guards went back on duty he led me right to your room. Not exactly James Bond style, but pretty cool."

"If that will be all Joey Sir I shall retire for the evening."

"Yeah. Thank you Seth."

"You're welcome." Seth bowed and exited the room.

"So, welcome to my new place. What do you want to do?" he turned around to look at Tristan, only Tristan wasn't there. "Trist?" he asked, walking further into the room. He looked into the ajar bedroom door and smiled. Tristan lay on the bed, his hands behind his head, legs crossed at the ankle.

"What do you think?" Tristan asked in response to the early question.

Joey smiled and strolled over to the bed.
