Chapter 10: Not The Best of Ideas

Joey growled angrily at the sun on Sunday morning. He didn’t like the idea of seeing sunlight before noon on his days off. He covered his head with a pillow and rolled away from the window.

Ten minutes later he rolled over again his pillow being tossed carelessly to the floor.

Another five minutes after that fiasco he was sitting upright in bed yelling at the sun. “I’m up ya jerk!”.

He yawned loudly and pulled the covers off himself. He looked at his clock and the anger subsided slightly… it was eleven thirty. He went to the bathroom, brushed his teeth (skipped a shower) and got dressed.

As he was picking up the phone to call Yugi he received a knock on the door.

“Come in.” He called as he hung the phone back up.

“Good afternoon.” Kaiba walked in, wearing a very smug expression.

“Not for half an hour.” Joey grumbled. “What do you want?” he asked.

“I would like to ask why you’re freaky little friends are calling my residence.” Seto said, his voice remaining a perfect paradigm of calm.

“Uhh…” was all Joey could come up with. Why would his friends call Kaiba’s?

“I believe the message was ‘Tell Joe’ ‘sup’ and the time of the ‘hang out’ is ‘two…ish’. I believe I’m correct, and that I didn’t miss anything. Did I Seth?” Seth came in, his head downcast as though he were a dog being punished.

“Just the boys name Sir.” Seth said quietly.

“Ah yes… I believe his name was ‘Yug’.” Seto laced his hands together, and stretched them out in front of him, effectively cracking the knuckles. “Now Joey, why is Yugi Motto calling my house?”

“I’m sorry Set. I didn’t give him the number I swear. He just… I have no other number to be reached at.” Joey started stuttering involuntarily. He didn’t know why, but the fact that Kaiba’s voice was calm, scared him more than if he appeared angry.

“I don’t care Joey.” Seto smiled, tossing Joey a cordless phone. “Call him back.” He said before turning and walking out the door.

Joey watched as Kaiba’s figured disappeared down the hallway. “Was that weird to you?” Joey asked Seth.

“Very much so Joey. I… I was honestly expecting to at least get a pay deduction.” He admitted. “I’m not supposed to answer your calls in secret you see, and I was trying to.”

“You don’t have to do that.” Joey said. “Just let him know next time, or whatever. Maybe he’ll be less creepy.”

“Perhaps.” Seth shook his head and sighed. “Well, I must make my rounds and then I will have the chauffer be set up so you may go down town.”

“Thanks Seth.” Joey said as he dialed Yugi’s number.

“-Hello?-” Yugi asked on the other side.

“Hey Yug, it’s me Joey.”

“-Oh hi. Sorry to call, I just wanted to make sure you were coming out today-.”

“Yeah I am. It’s cool that you called.” Joey lied. He didn’t want to make his friends feel weird. “Is Trist going?”

“-I’m pretty sure he is. I don’t think Tea will be joining us though… she’s still a little upset I guess-.”

“Oh, I’m sorry Yugi.”

“-It’s cool. So want to meet at Pizza Chef around 2-?”

“Yeah that sounds awesome Yugi. I’ll see you then.”

“-All right… Bye Joey-.”

“Bye.” Joey hung up the phone and jogged down stairs.

“You know Joey…” Seto said, greeting Joey at the door. “The proper thing to do in this situation, now that I know you are hanging out with your friends and not just gallivanting alone, would be to invite me along. If you don’t that could be considered bad manners.”

Joey bit his tongue and smiled a forced smile, “Seto, would you like to join me at Pizza Chef?”

“I would love to.” Seto began walking away, “However, I have a very important business matter to attend, you understand.”

“Sure.” Joey rolled his eyes and ran out the door.

“Joey!” Tristan hugged his boyfriend (if that’s what they could call themselves).

“Hey Trist.” Joey hugged back, feeling the familiar sensation of guilt welling up in his stomach. “Where’s Yug?”

“Gettin’ a soda. Want something?” Tristan asked, leading him to the table.

“No I’m good.” Joey smiled and sat down at the table with Tristan. Joey was surprised to see Tea already seated at the table.

“Hey Tea.” He smiled, sitting across from her and next to Tristan. “How are you doing?”

“I’m doing a lot better now that my work load has eased up a bit.” She admitted. “I came here to meet up with Mai and Duke, but they weren’t here… only Yugi and Tristan were.”

Joey responded with an ‘oh’ and looked at Tristan who had a familiar sly smirk on his face.

“Hey Joey, glad you came.” Yugi smiled to Joey and sat next to Tea. He seemed hesitant to sit down but since it was the only seat left he was out of options.

“So what did you guys have planned? Anything special?” Joey asked, not that he cared. He hadn’t really hung out with his friends in so long he was excited just to be hanging out with them.

“I dunno.” Tristan said. He looked curiously at Tea and Yugi who shrugged in unison.

“We could go to a movie.” Tea suggested.

“Or we could to Joey’s palace.” Yugi joked.

Joey let out a laugh. “Wouldn’t that be a riot? To see Seto Kaiba’s face when I brought all of you to hang out by the pool.”

“Or we could make use of that Jacuzzi.” Tristan laughed.

“How do you know there’s a Jacuzzi?” Tea giggled, and Tristan blushed a little.

“Shut up.” He mumbled.

“Let’s do it.” Joey said. “I think it’ll be hilarious.”

“I don’t know Joey, I was kidding.” Yugi said. “I mean, it probably would be funny but…”

“Come on.” Joey smiled, “He has a huge plasma screen downstairs, we can watch a movie or something.”

“Well, it does sound a lot more fun than doing nothing.” Tea agreed.

“Hold on I’ll call Seth to come get us.” Joey reached into his pocket and pulled out a cell phone and dialed one on the speed dial.

“Since when did you have a cell phone?” Tristan asked.

“Oh, Kaiba gave it to me the other day. He said it was for emergencies.” Everyone looked at Joey with a confused expression and he laughed nervously under their gaze. “What?” He asked them, “Oh hey Seth, would you mind sending the car to come get me and my friends at Pizza Chef? Thanks.” Joey flipped the phone down and put it back in his pocket. “My usual driver’s off duty, but Enrico will be by in a few minutes.”

The group finished their sodas and waited for Enrico, who arrived precisely four minutes later.

“He’s good.” Tea said.

“Not bad timing.” Joey smiled and led the all to the limo. “In you go.” He ushered them all inside and then hoped in himself.

“Where to Joey Sir?” Enrico asked.

“Just back to the mansion.” Joey replied. Enrico nodded and began driving back to Kaiba Mansion.

“This is a nice limo.” Tea said, pushing all the buttons she could find.

“I’m not really sure what all those buttons do.” Joey said, watching his friends look through everything.

After a short drive back to the mansion Joey was really beginning to wonder if bringing them there was a good idea. He now worried for Kaiba’s possessions more than his own hide.

“So what are we doing?” Tea asked as they got out of the limo.

“Follow me. Let’s just watch a movie or something.”

“I want to go swimming!” Tea said with a new excitement.

“No one has suits.” Joey mentioned.

“Besides its cold.” Tristan said.

“Well we do have an indoor pool.” Joey said.

“Then let’s just jump in!” Tea said.

“Hold on,” Joey reached in his pocket and dialed Seth. “Hey, do we have spare suits for the pool? What about for girls? Awesome, thanks.” Joey smiled. “Well if you all want to, we have suits.”

“Sure.” They all agreed.

“Follow me.” Joey led them to the indoor pool room and there Seth stood, suits in hand. “Thanks Seth.”

“You are most welcome Sir.”
