Joey ran into the school building and down the hall – he was late. He had overslept and now he was in trouble. If he was tardy again he would earn yet another detention. He stepped into homeroom just as the bell sounded. He smiled and took his seat – he wouldn’t be getting detention today.

“Good morning. Today the intramural volleyball team will meet in room two fifteen before we go to practice. The match against Aringo High will be held on Saturday please remember admission is free with your “Super fan” ID card.”

The rest of the announcements were lost on Joey as he rushed to finish his math homework. He hadn’t really been in the mood last night to finish up his work. In fact, he still wasn’t, but if it didn’t get done then he would receive a low grade and he couldn’t afford to fail. He scribbled his last answer as the bell rang and he followed the class out, idly thinking about skipping the rest of the day. That thought was intensified as he saw Tristan walking toward him. He gulped back a feeling…fear? He wasn’t sure.

“Hey.” Tristan said. Yugi was shortly behind him.

“Hey guys.” Joey said with a small smile. “How you doin’?”

“Good. You look tired.”

“Yea,” Yugi agreed with Tristan, “how did the weekend go with Kaiba?” Yugi asked.

“He was being a brat most of the weekend, but it’s all set.” Joey smiled again and noticed Tea walking their way. “Hey Tea.”

“Hey guys.” She smiled. “Joey, if you still need help in English I can tutor you Wednesday.”

“Great. Thanks a lot Tea.” Joey began walking to math class, the others following. “Want to just meet in the library?”

“Sure.” She replied, “Well I have to go the other way. See ya.”

“Bye.” The boys replied in unison.

“So did you do your homework?” Tristan asked, his tone resembling a mother questioning their child.

“Yes.” Joey said in the apathetic tone of a child in the previous scenario.

Tristan smiled but said nothing more as they walked into the classroom. Something was bothering Joey, and had been for a while. Tristan had a pretty good feeling he knew what it was too. ‘Now for the moral dilemma. Do you take a step back and let Joey be with Kaiba? Or do you stay selfish and keep him for yourself?’ Tristan allowed his mind to spin with thoughts, but he ignored them all. He released a sigh and shook his thoughts away.

“You okay?” Joey asked after hearing Tristan’s exasperated sigh.

“Great.” Tristan said, taking his seat. “I’m just concerned about the test next class.”

“Oh yea, I forgot about that.”
~.~

Joey wanted so much to tell Tristan all that had happened. He wanted to be honest and up front. He was pretty sure that Tristan had some idea of his feelings toward Kaiba; but, he was just as sure that Tristan had ignored that idea.

Tristan had been acting off all day too; Joey noticed it immediately, his gaze was distant and he didn’t seem to be taking any notes at all during class (which was rare).

Joey had to get over Kaiba. Kaiba was never there for him when he had needed him the most. Tristan had always been his friend, had always loved him. Joey smiled, taking down the notes that the teacher had just written on the board. It was settled, Tristan was the nice one, the loving one, the honest one. There was no reason to think about it anymore… but Kaiba, Kaiba was upfront, dashing, mysterious, and generally kind hearted deep down… extremely deep down. Joey slumped; he hated this feeling, this confusion that festered inside of him.

“Mr. Katsuya,” The teacher said, clearing his throat slightly.

“Yes Sir?” Joey asked, apparently he had been lost in thought… again.

“Name three prominent noble gases please.” The teacher repeated.

“Oh yea, Helium, Xeon, and Neon.” Joey said.

“Thank you. Now can any one tell me why these gases are considered ‘noble’?”

Joey threw his back pack down on the couch in his room and slumped into the chair. He was sick of life. He sighed as he looked up at the clock, he didn’t know why he bothered to check the time, he had just gotten home from school so it obviously wouldn’t be much later than three… which it wasn’t; it was three ten to be exact. A knock sounded on his door.

“Yea?” He asked, knowing it was Seth because Seth was the only one who ever came to see him.

“Presenting Miss Tea Sir.” He said in his ‘professional’ voice that he put on for visitors.

“Thanks Seth. Hey Tea.”

“Hey Joey. Thanks Seth.”

“You are most welcome Miss. Will you be needing anything?”

“No thanks.” Joey smiled.

“Very good Sir. If it is quite all right, I shall retire for the afternoon.”

“Yea, see you tomorrow Seth.”

“Thank you Sir.” Seth closed the door and the sound of his footsteps echoed away.

“It’s not tutoring night… so what’s up?” Joey asked, knowing that Tea wouldn’t risk coming to Kabia’s mansion if it wasn’t something important.

“Joey, I need to talk to you about Yugi.”

“Yea? What’s going on?”

“Well… I miss him. I figured, you’ve been so good at keeping the peace between everybody that maybe you could… I dunno, help me get him back.” Tea bit her bottom lip as she stared idly at the carpet.

“Oh. That’ll be easy.” Joey smiled, “Just tell him.”

“I can’t. I made this big deal about how he never let me be alone, and how I couldn’t even study without him. But now that he’s not around all the time, I’m really lonely.”

“Well you shouldn’t keep someone around just because you’re lonely Tea.” Joey said, thinking that maybe that was the real reason he was having a dilemma with this Tristan situation. Maybe I just want to be with him so that I’m not alone.

“No. It’s not that.” Tea assured him. “It’s that he understands what I mean when I don’t finish my sentences. He knows when to shut up so I can memorize a term, or when to calm me down because I’m overreacting. He’s -”

“Your best friend.” Joey filled in.

“Yea.”

“Just tell him that you made a mistake. Be honest. Say that you really miss being close to him and that he’s your best friend. He’ll accept your feelings, and I guarantee he’ll return them.”

“Thanks Joey. I’m sorry to come here bothering you with all this.”

“It’s not a problem. That’s what friends are for.” Joey smiled, deciding that his good deed was done for the day.

“You’re right, that is what friends are for. So, you tell me what’s been bothering you.”

“Nothing, I’m fine. I’ve just been under a lot of pressure. I have to pass Chem., Math, History, and English or I stay back.” Joey laughed slightly before he realized that Tea wasn’t buying his bologna.

“Okay, well studying will help you with that. What about in other aspects of your life? How are you and Tristan doing? What’s going on with you and Kaiba?”

“WHAT? Why would you think there was something going on between me and Kaiba?”

“You live with him. That’s all I meant.”

“Oh… right… well nothing’s going on. Tristan and I are fine. Life’s fine.” Joey always rambled when he was nervous.

“I’m always here when you want to tell me the truth.” Tea smiled and stood up. Joey sighed, exhaling a minimal part of the tension building inside of him.

“Thanks Tea.”

“Don’t mention it.” She walked toward the door and turned back to face Joey, “I’ll show myself out. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Joey waved slightly as Tea disappeared out the door.

Not a minute later there was another knock on Joey’s door. “What’s up Tea?” He asked, figuring she forgot something. He opened the door to see Kaiba walking away briskly.

“Going somewhere Kaiba?” Joey asked. Kaiba turned around, partially embarrassed at having been caught ‘Ding-dong ditching’ so-to-speak.

“I didn’t realize you were home.”

“We go to the same school Kaiba, I get home the same time you do.” Joey said. He didn’t know why but he felt as though he could be sarcastic and it wouldn’t matter.

“Of course.” Kaiba was rubbing his hands together in a nervous fashion, as though debating whether or not to say something.

“What’s on your mind Kaiba?” Joey asked, motioning for Kaiba to come inside. For a moment Joey felt as though he were the resident Psychologist, helping people out with their problems. Though he thought maybe he was the one who should be getting counseling.

“Not much. Just wanted to check in, see how classes went today.”

“Fine Kaiba, thanks for the concern.” Joey had a feeling there was a lot more to this visit than polite chatter. “How was your day?”

“Oh fine. I fired another financial adviser and got an A on my math test.” Joey had to chuckle at the events in Kaiba’s day. It wasn’t often that a CEO got on A on his math test.

“That’s awesome.” Joey said, trying to sound like he wasn’t confused about this random visit.

“Yea.” Kaiba looked around the room as though desperate for another conversation piece… nothing came up. “Well, okay. It was nice chatting with you. I will see you at dinner.”

“Oh, are we eating dinner together for the first time since I’ve been here?”

“It won’t be the first time.” Kaiba looked away. “Just be in the dinning room at six o’clock please.”

“Kaiba said ‘please’, I’ll alert the press.”

“Why are you being such an asshole?” Kaiba asked, all of his feigned niceness heading out the window. “I’ve been nothing but nice to you this entire time, and you’re treating me with sarcasm and you’re being rude and I don’t appreciate it.”

Joey was taken aback by the sudden outburst, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t prepared to fight back. “Why did you come in here anyway? Don’t bother telling me it was to have a conversation with me. What did you really want?”

“I was just trying to be nice.” Kaiba sat on the couch, his features sullen and vulnerable. “You don’t understand how I am. I’m not used to having to please other people. I do what I want, when I want, because I can. That’s how it’s always been. But I understand that to earn someone’s affection, when it really matters, you have to be nice to them. I have to be caring and understanding and show my true feelings, I can’t always be this hard-ass CEO that I portray. I have to prove to you that I can be what you need me to be.” Joey sat next to Kaiba and felt bad for his outburst.

“Seto, you don’t have to prove anything to me.”

Kaiba looked up at Joey, “You called me Seto.” He smiled genuinely for the first time in years, and he hugged Joey.

Joey didn’t know how to respond to the hug, but he wrapped his arms around Seto and hugged him back.

“Can we at least be friends?” Seto whispered.

“Of course.” Joey smiled, pulling away from Seto slightly.

Their eyes locked on each other’s and in a moment of clarity Joey understood what this meant; he leaned toward Seto, his lips parted slightly, Seto leaned in, and as their lips connected the world spun. Joey had never felt so invigorated in his life. The sparks between them were amazing. Joey leaned back on the couch, pulling Seto on top of him, never allowing their lips to disconnect. Joey had no thoughts as his lips moved against Seto’s, their tongues dancing together rhythmically. Joey felt as though his whole life had been leading up to this moment, and he wasn’t even sure why; but at this point, he knew this was where he was supposed to be.

Seto had never been so happy, to have Joey beneath him, accepting him, wanting him. Even in his fantasies Joey had been hesitant; but now, in real life, here he was, accepting, loving? Seto wanted to say the words, to tell how he really felt… but he couldn’t. He did not want this bliss to end; he did not want to scare Joey off (which he had a habit of doing).

Gently Seto advanced, reaching his hand lower, to feel Joey’s stomach. The touch of his skin was exquisitely delightful. He wanted to know more of Joey… all of him. Joey accepted Seto’s advance and made one of his own. He began unbuttoning Seto’s uniform. Seto made no effort to stop him, and Joey took that as a sign that his movements were not frowned upon. The blue blazer slid off Seto’s shoulders with ease and found its way carelessly to the floor. Joey admired Seto’s body for a moment, taking in the site of his chest moving rhythmically with Joey’s; his lean stomach leading Joey’s eyes tantalizingly toward still hidden depths. Joey felt himself quiver at the thought. He looked back up to see Seto doing a fair amount of staring himself. It didn’t make Joey uncomfortable to have Seto watching him. He had to admit he felt the usual nerves (Do I look all right? Am I cute enough for him?) But, the way Seto was looking at him made him forget all the petty questions that would normally have been pestering his brain.

Joey leaned up, wanting to connect with Seto again, in some way. He kissed Seto’s lips softly, not wanting to rush or to break the calm trance that had seemed to engulf them since they started. Seto leaned into Joey, enjoying the soothing motion of their tongues dancing together. Joey was scared to make the next move, but he did anyway. He reached for the belt of Seto’s pants, and began unbuckling it. Seto didn’t condemn this action, he embraced it. As though all he could do were mimic Joey’s moves Seto began to unbutton his lover’s trousers. Seto stood up, dropping his pants to the floor as he did. Joey looked at him with a hunger he didn’t expect. There was still the issue of Seto’s boxers, but all in good time. Joey was not in a hurry. Joey too stood up his loose pants falling carelessly to the floor beside Seto’s.

“Let’s go to the bed room.” Joey said his voice barely above a whisper. Seto nodded in compliance, but did nothing more.

Seto kissed Joey again, lowering him to the bed as he did so. Joey felt mystified, scared almost. He wasn’t sure what to expect on this afternoon with Seto Kaiba; but the mystery intrigued him.

Seto’s heart was racing, and his head was pounding. He had a million thoughts going through his head all at once. But they all focused on the shy boy lying beneath him, eyes half closed, mouth agape. Seto traced kisses along Joey’s slim neck, wondering just how this boy got him so wound up. Joey writhed in acceptance beneath him, and his primal instincts kicked in. He wanted nothing more than to flip Joey over and have his way with him; as primitive and feral as that sounded. On the other hand, Kaiba wanted nothing more than to be slow, gentle, and experience Joey fully; knowing every inch of him before they were entwined.

Joey felt his heart rate pick up as he looked at Kaiba. The gaze in Seto’s eyes had never been there before. It was one of longing, acceptance, and… love? What did love look like anyway? Joey wondered. He remembered soft green eyes, the eyes of his mother… That was a long time ago. He told himself. But still the memory taunted him.

Mommy, what’s wrong?” The child asked as he saw the tears in his mother’s eyes.
“Mommy is just tired Joey. Don’t worry about it.” She fluffed his hair and smiled adoringly at him.
The small boy nodded, agreeing that he would stop worrying. But he didn’t. Every night he would hear his mother crying. He would see the tears leaking slowly from her gorgeous green eyes. He had never understood why she was crying until one night.
“You bitch!” Joey heard his father’s angry yell. Then he heard the contact of flesh on flesh. “Stop protecting that little menace.”
“Please, don’t hurt Joey!” she pleaded, racing to stand in front of Joey’s bedroom door. “Please, he’s all I’ve got.” She whispered.
Joey hadn’t understood what was happening at that time. All he knew was that his mother was protecting him. He had been beaten before, but his mother always tried her best to stop him. That night, his mother came to his bed, her lip and her left eye swollen. She leaned over Joey, kissed the top of his head and smiled. Joey hadn’t seen his mother really smile in so long, it made him feel completely perfect.
After Joey’s sister had died, his family had never really been the same. But the comforting way his mother smiled, made him decide it wasn’t so bad anymore.
“Mommy, you’re happy.” He said, smiling himself now.
“Yes. You and I are going far, far away. We’ll be with Serenity and we will never have to worry about… anything. Won’t that be nice?”
“But mom, isn’t Serenity in heaven?” Joey asked.
“Yes honey. Oh wouldn’t it be so nice to see Serenity again? And to fly, like the angels.” Joey saw how is mother’s eyes became distant. He didn’t understand at the time, but he knew she was drifting.
“But, I like it here. With my friends. With you. I miss serenity too mommy, but what about all the people who love us?”
“But we’ll be a family in heaven. Don’t you want to go?” Joey was only nine, but he considered it. Leaving this world, with it’s cruel father and torturous school system, to be with his mom and his sister. He didn’t really remember his sister, but he knew that he missed her.
“What are you telling that boy? Fillin’ his head with lies about religion and happiness in heaven. Do you really think God loves you?”
“Stop it! Just stop it!”
Joey never got to see his sister like his mother had promised. But he did get to see the love in his mother’s eyes as she lay in the hospital, her heart monitor beeping.
“I’m sorry you aren’t coming with me.” She said, as her breathing became labored. “I’ll always watch out for you. I love you.” She touched her hand to Joey’s cheek, and he saw an emotion in her eyes. Joey had never understood the term ‘seeing emotions’. He did now. His mother’s eyes shown pure love. “Serenity and I will always watch you.” Joey watched as his mother died. She looked so happy.

Joey berated himself, not now. Why are you thinking about shit like that now?! Joey looked up at Kaiba, apparently he had only been lost in thought for a few moments, but it had been enough to confuse Seto.

“Are you all right?” He asked, tracing a gentle line along Joey’s cheek.

“Fine.” Joey smiled, hugging Seto close to him. Seto kissed Joey’s neck and sucked on his racing pulse.

Joey lost himself to Seto’s touch. There would be no more haunting memories of his past, and no more fear or guilt in his thoughts. It was only him and Seto.~ mUahahahaha how was that for awesomeness!? So was it worth the wait? Tell me tell me tell mee!!!!!!! Hehe I love you guys! Thanks for being patient!
