Tristan woke up lazily. He hated Wednesday’s. Yes, they were half way through the school week, but they also taunted him. Still three whole days of school left before the weekend. He sighed as he hit his alarm clock for the third time, finally ready to wake up. He went through the usual morning routine, shower, dress, finish homework, and eat breakfast. His motions, though routine every morning, seemed more mechanical today. His thoughts had been on Joey all night. He debated asking his mom for advice, but he thought better of it. His mom would ask a lot of questions… and she loved Joey; Tristan didn’t need to hear her opinion, he knew what it would be. “If you break up with Joey that would be just silly!” Tristan smiled as his mother’s voice went through his head.
“Are you okay Trist?” his mother asked, watching him from the other side of the table.
“Fine.” He smiled. “I should go to school.” He hadn’t eaten much and his mother noted the odd behaviour, but said nothing more.
“Have a good day at school sweetie.” She hugged her son and walked him to the door. Something was upsetting him. Did something happen with Joey? Is he having trouble in school?
“Thanks mom. See you.”
~
Tristan walked out the door, expecting to see Joey there with his limo, but he wasn’t there. Tristan sighed heavily. He wasn’t upset that he had to walk to school, but he had a sudden feeling of foreboding. Did you really choose Kaiba over me?
~
Joey woke up slowly, with laziness in his movements. As he opened his eyes he realized how dark it was in his room, and he automatically rolled over for more sleep. He connected with something firm and realized there was a body next to him. His eyes opened again and he looked upon the sleeping form of Seto Kaiba.
A smile lit his features, before a look of guilt replaced that happiness. Hours before he had been one of the happiest people in the world, he was sure. But now, all he could feel was this all consuming guilt. Tristan loves me. Can I say the same about Seto? Joey traced lines along Seto’s taut stomach. Seto moved only slightly, shifting on to his right side, facing Joey. Joey smiled, despite his guilt Seto could make him smile, always. I don’t know what to do. So there’s only one thing to do…
~
Joey showered as quickly as he could. He was late. How he overslept he’d never figure out; he’d been asleep since almost five in the afternoon. He grabbed his breakfast from Seth and ran to his limo. He knew by now Tristan would have already left, so he went straight to school.
Joey didn’t know where Seto had gone, but he wasn’t around when he finally awoke for the second time that morning. He assumed Kaiba had gone back to his room and left for school promptly, or he was skipping today.
Joey saw his friends, waiting where they always did before the bell rang. He walked up to them, a smile on his face.
“Morning guys.” He waved, and they waved back.
“Hey Joey.”
“Sleep late again?” Tristan asked.
“Yea, you know me. I can sleep forever.” He smirked, hoping no one would suspect anything. “That’s a nice sight to see.” He nodded toward Yugi’s hand entwined with Tea’s. Tea blushed a little and Yugi had a goofy smile.
“Trist, sorry I didn’t come get you this morning.” Joey said, trying to be as natural and calm as possible.
“It’s aight. I figured you were just late.” He smiled at Joey and said nothing more.
The bell rang and Joey had never been happier. “Well, see you guys at lunch.” He said, heading off toward homeroom.
“Bye.” Everyone went their separate ways.
Joey shook his head as he walked to class, he had made it through his first encounter with Tristan; but he felt he might have a nervous breakdown by lunch if he kept hiding the truth from Tristan.
Joey rounded the corner, knocking into someone in the process. “Oh sorry, my bad.” Joey said, as he looked up to see Seto moving through the crowd. Seto didn’t even look back. Joey tried ignored this as he continued to class.
Why wouldn’t he say something? Does he not want people to know? Did he get what he wanted and now he’s done with me? Was that just one of his little ‘jobs’ for me to do? Joey didn’t get to find out these answers as he sat through homeroom. Nor did he get to find them out as he went through his daily schedule and went home.
Tea went home with him, it was tutoring night. “It’s good to see you happy Tea.” Joey said as they entered his “living room.”
“Thanks Joey. Your advice worked, of course.”
“I knew it would. Yugi’s easy to read, he’s so laid back it’s hard not to know how he’ll react.”
“Yea, you’re right.” Tea sat down and opened her English prep book, Joey followed suit. “Let’s get down to business.”
~
Tristan walked up to the gates of Kaiba mansion. He had to talk to Joey. He knew something had happened he just knew it. It’s time to do what I must.
“Can I help you Sir?” A guard asked as Tristan approached the gate.
“I’m here to see Joey.” Tristan informed him.
“One moment.” The guard went back in to his booth and spoke in hushed tones on the walkie-talkie. “Joey is just finishing his tutoring session with Ms. Tea. You may go in.” The gate opened and Tristan thanked the man as he walked in.
Tristan walked up the long stretch of driveway and into the Kaiba mansion. He was greeted by a butler there. “Hi, I’m looking for Joey’s room; I’ve forgotten where it is.”
“I shall lead you there Sir.”
“Thank you.”
Tristan and the butler went through the swirling catacombs that were the hallways of Kaiba mansion, before arriving at their destination. Tristan thanked the butler and knocked on the door.
~
“And that was the plot of The Great Gatsby.” Tea said with a smile. “But honestly, you would have done better to read the book.”
Joey smiled, “Yea, yea. You’re saving my butt Tea, you know that?”
“Yes. And you better thank me someday.” She smiled and packed away her notebooks. “I’ve got to run, I told mom I’d be home by five.” Joey looked up at the clock automatically. Four thirty.
“Okay Tea. Thanks for your help. Want me to give you a lift home.”
“Nah, it’s not far. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Okay. I’ll walk you to the door at least, it’s quite a maze.” Joey opened the door to see Tristan, preparing to knock.
“Joey.” He said, pulling his hand back.
“Hey Trist.”
“Hey Tea.” Tristan smiled.
“Hey Tristan. I can show myself out Joey.” Tea said, walking out the door. “Bye guys.”
“Come on in.” Joey said, allowing Tristan to come in to the room. “Tea was just catching me up in English.” He said, closing the door behind Tristan.
~
As he watched Tristan enter Joey’s room, jealousy hit him. He turned the corner roughly, not carning who was in his way..
