3) Seto's Offer
Summary: Yami seeks comfort; Seto makes an offer to Yugi over the phone.
Yami, concerned for his aibou's state of mind after such a disturbing revelation, fled to the deepest recesses of his soul room. He entered the chamber where his strongest defenses were in place. To his relief, the object of his most protective defense was there to greet him. Unnerved, he stood uncertainly before his Dark Magician. A moment later, strong arms folded around him, the entity silent as always.
"You always know what I need," Yami breathed, wrapping his arms around the slender waist. He felt his usual strength shattered in the face of what was potentially a tremendous personal defeat. If his aibou could not accept him now... "But I had to tell him. I could not even contemplate being with Seto if Yugi didn't know about it... and the consequences. Now we'll be farther apart than ever. I suppose this was inevitable..."
Minutes later, he felt calmer, and was able to separate from the tall monster at last. "Thanks, Dark Magician..." Glancing up, Yami saw the being nod and step back into his guard position.
Yami took several deep breaths and began to pace back and forth within the dimly lit chamber. "Yugi cares deeply for me as the other half of his soul, and I must trust in that," he murmured to himself and his watchful guardian. "I believe in him and his innate goodness. I believe he will be reasonable... but what if this is truly asking too much of him? To share his body... like that... and he doesn't even know it's Seto Kaiba that I want to be with yet! Will he reject me? I can't believe he would... but this could be too much..."
Neither Yami nor Yugi got a lot of sleep that night.
Seto signed the last paper before him and sat back in his chair, sighing. He'd just given over a substantial sum of money to several charities which Mokuba had helped him pick out. [This was the easy part,] he mused as he cleared his desk and prepared to leave his office for the day. [Mokuba wants me to visit these places with him, too. I suppose I can do that... it'll give me practice in being polite and civil. Then perhaps I'll be able to warm up to Yugi and the others a little more...]
Riding down to the ground level in his private elevator, Seto mused on his "makeover" project. [I doubt Yami will think this is enough, but it's a start,] he considered soberly. [Mokuba will be easy to convince that I'm changing. Yugi could well be the hard sell...]
Thinking of his "project" as another marketing scheme came easily to the young executive. But he was realistic enough to understand that he had to do more than act the part of reformed ice-hearted bastard. [I have to talk to Yugi,] he thought, and knew that would be the most difficult part. [He's such a *kid*, though...]
He made a phone call once he was seated in his limo and riding toward his mansion. "May I speak to Yugi Mutou?" he inquired when the call went through.
Someone - the grandfather, no doubt - responded and left to get Yugi. Then came the high-pitched voice Seto heard every day in school. "Hello, this is Yugi..."
"Yugi," Kaiba began, "This is Seto Kaiba."
"Oh, hi, Kaiba-kun!" Yugi greeted him brightly like he always did. He no longer feared that the Kaiba Corporation's CEO would do something mean to him or anyone close to him. Yugi's open heart had long since forgiven Kaiba for what he'd done to his grandfather. "What's up?"
Seto sighed, relieved to hear the boy's friendliness. [Maybe this won't be as hard as I thought...] "Yugi," he began slowly, "I was wondering..."
Yugi cheerily interrupted. "Oh, you want to talk to Yami-san again? Hang on..."
"NO, actually, I wanted to speak to you," Seto spoke quickly to forestall the other's transformation. "If you have a minute."
"Me?" Yugi asked, bewildered. "Oh, okay, what is it, then?" He could sense the spirit's awakened interest, though.
Seto thought fast. What could he possibly have in common with Yugi to talk about - other than dueling? "Um, how is your grandfather doing?"
Yugi's eyes widened. "Oh... ah, he's fine, thanks for asking. He doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects from what happened with Pegasus... or before that." [Irk, I shouldn't have mentioned that...] Yugi thought, biting his lip. Kaiba wouldn't want to be reminded about what he'd done to Yugi's grandpa.
Seto took a deep breath. "I'm very glad to hear that, Yugi. Mokuba is fine, too. It's a relief that there wasn't any further harm done by Pegasus."
[Why is he bringing this up?] Yugi wondered. "Has anyone seen or heard of Pegasus since, I wonder?"
"Not a thing," Seto admitted. "Apparently he cut all ties with those who sought to take over my corporation as well. I've since fired all of them, of course. I will only allow those loyal to me to serve on my board. Needless to say, my security measures have had to be increased." **
"Wow, I can imagine," Yugi replied, wondering why Kaiba was telling him about his business. "Um, if you don't mind my asking, did you get the virtual reality game reprogrammed?"
"Yes, I did," Seto answered, frowning a little. Then he got an idea. While he still felt rather vehement about being Yugi's rival when it came to dueling, he had to admit that Yugi - apart from Yami as well as together with the spirit - was quite gifted in the game. "You know, for this to be truly marketable, there will need to be many scenarios developed. While I of course have many ideas of my own... I would welcome your input if you should have an idea to share."
[That didn't hurt at all,] Seto thought, feeling a little faint.
"Really?" Yugi was thrilled. "Actually, I loved what you did! It was a stellar game in itself, but there would need to be multiple paths developed of course. I doubt I could add much, but I'll think about it. Thanks, Kaiba-kun!"
"You're welcome," Seto murmured, then frowned when he heard a sudden intake of breath from the other end. "Yugi?"
"Are you serious?" came a far deeper and older voice abruptly.
"Yami!" Seto exclaimed, flushing.
"Seto..."
Glad that there was one-way glass dividing the back of the limo from the driver at the front, Seto closed his eyes and shifted lower in the seat as the dark honey voice dropped his name so deliciously in his ear. "Yes, of course I'm serious," he murmured, hoping he sounded sincere.
"Hmmm, I wonder if you would have asked Yugi for input on your game if you didn't have a particular interest in me..."
Seto swallowed carefully. "He *is* a gifted duelist. I wasn't lying to him."
A long pause, then, "Very well. I should hate to think you're merely making nice with him in order to get to me."
[Ouch,] Seto thought. [He's so perceptive. But that's part of his attraction, damn it...] "Yami," he replied evenly, "I'm a businessman. Despite how I feel about my own prowess in gaming and in computer programming, I would be a failure if I didn't conduct extensive market research, which includes eliciting input from my target audience. I do welcome Yugi's input and I would of course compensate him accordingly."
Yami was thinking long and hard. "I see," he replied enigmatically. [Actually, it's kind of sweet. He's trying so hard...]
[Does that mean he approves? Disapproves? Distrusts me and hates my guts?] Seto fretted. "I understand," he commented. "You're being protective of him."
"Of course I am. He's my other self. I'm naturally concerned with the condition of his heart at all times. Is that a problem?"
[I surrender,] Seto thought, sighing. He shifted even lower in the car seat, his free hand squeezing the now rampant erection encased in his tight pants. "No, not at all. I accept that he's part of you." [Damn, what IS it about his voice? It makes me want to... to...]
It made him want to submit, body and soul, to the owner of that voice. [Damn.]
"Do you now?" Yami asked, amused. "That's refreshing to hear, if you should mean that. I'll let you talk to him again now. But know this... I'll be listening."
[Yes, sir,] Seto thought, then shook his head to dispel the uncharacteristic thought. "I understand," he murmured.
"Um, Kaiba-kun?" Yugi was back.
"Yes, Yugi?" Seto replied quickly, straightening. He took another deep breath to steady himself, willing his body to calm down.
"I've got to go - Grandpa is calling me to come to dinner. Thanks for asking me about ideas for your game. I'll sure work on thinking up some good ones for you!"
"You're welcome, Yugi," Seto answered, relaxing. [Got through that one.] "See you in school."
"Yep! Bye!"
When the phone connection closed, Seto Kaiba threw the phone down on the seat beside him and leaned over, holding his head in his hands, his mind spinning. [This is SO weird... but I'm going to do this. Damn it, I can do anything...]
** - This chapter was written before I learned that the Big 5 executives that had reprogrammed Seto's VR game had not merely been fired after that failure, but someone remained in a virtual limbo to be allied with Noah later on. So we'll just have to say for the purposes of this story that the Noah arc is not going to be an issue.
