Confessions of the Heart
Chapter 2
I drove to Atemu’s apartment the next day, my mind wrapped around Umeta's words like a lover's embrace.
"Papa likes you."
Is it true or a child's hope...and maybe my own as well. To have Atemu return my feelings is my fondest wish.
I pull into the parking space and head to the door. I press the button for the intercom and declare my presence. Atemu buzzes me in.
I head upstairs and find him struggling with a large box. I lift up the other end easily and help him get it over the threshold.
"Thanks Seto. When did you get so strong?" he smiles at me, tucking his still long blonde bangs behind his ear. I want to reply with 'when did you get so weak?' but we both knew the answer to that question.
"Where is Umeta?"
"School. I had her files transferred to our old high school before we left America. she is a bright girl but I don’t feel great about having her out of school more than I have to." he replied to my change of subject, bending down at the waist to dig something out of the box I just helped him haul in.
Yep, his ass hasn’t changed either. Still nice and firm.
"So Seto, what are you doing here?"
"Er...just wanted to see if you needed help." I said looking everywhere but his ass.
He raised an eyebrow. "You actually have that kind of time? Shouldn’t you be at Kaiba corp. making some poor soul's life miserable?"
'Ha, ha. No. since I had a stroke, I have been forced into retirement."
'Oh gods, Seto, I didn’t know. I’m sorry."
I shrug it off though inside I am shamelessly reveling in his sympathy. "It’s okay. I had been meaning to pass the company over to Mokuba anyway. It’s not like I have any kids."
"I find that funny. I thought you and Shojiki were pretty serious." great, another thing to shrug off. How does one explain that he broke it off with his 'serious' girlfriend because he was gay and she wanted biological children?
"Nah, we had different paths. So do you need my help or not?"
He smiled, which was what I wanted. "Sure. Don’t know if I can afford it though."
Here we go. "It’s going to cost you dinner and a movie."
He looks up at me, a little shocked. I shift my weight nervously, waiting for his answer. He smiles softly and I relax.
"I am sure I can afford that."
-------------------------------------------------
He’s distracted. He definitely distracted by something. Maybe I didn’t pick a good restaurant. Is the food too bad or maybe-
“Seto.” He says softly, breaking my train of thought. I look up and he smiles as if he was reading my mind. Knowing him…he probably was… “The food is great. I never knew this place was here.”
“It was built 2 years after you left.” I reply, relaxing.
There goes that distracted look again, I was going to say something witty to snap him out of it but the waiter beat me to the punch.
“Are you enjoying your dinner sirs?” he asked, helping the busboy clear the plates.
“Yes, immensely. I would like the dessert menu and the check please on two separate bills.” Atemu replied.
“Very well sir.”
The waiter and the busboy bowed then left. I turned to Atemu with a raised eyebrow. He just drank his glass of Cabernet with a shrug.
“I have enough to cover my half of the bill.”
The eyebrow I raised at first was joined its brother. I knew that Atemu was champion at bluffing but this is just bullshitting. He just quit his job as a teacher in an inner city school and there is no demand for duelists at the moment though I am sure he can make the talk show rounds if he wanted to.
At my disbelieving expression, he sat down his glass. “Savira agreed to pay child support now that I am back in Japan.”
“How much?” I ask before I could I stop myself. He thinks for a second before writing down a figure on a napkin. He hands the napkin to me.
My eyes widen. Holy fuck, that’s more than Kaiba corp. made in the last three years, before taxes.
“Damn Atemu, he really is going to pay all this?” I ask, crumpling the napkin.
“He is. You know money means nothing to him.” He replied, smiling momentarily at the waiter who handed him the dessert menu. I received mine as well and waited until the waiter left to ask my next question.
“So what are you going to do now? You have no deck, billions at your feet and a 12-year-old to care for.” I said as I absently scanned the dessert menu. They were all excellent but my attention was on the violet eyed man in front of me.
He sighed and looked down. “I really honestly don’t know. Of course, half of that money is being put away for Umeta’s college fund, hell; it would cover her wedding whenever she decides to do that when she is ready.”
I reach over and touch his shoulder. He looks up at me, his eyes a stew of uncertainty, fear and doubt.
“Just know if you need a hand, just call me. Don’t run away again...please,” I added that last word quietly. He blessed me with one of his smiles.
“Thank you.”
--------------------------------------------------------- “And then what?”
I sigh as I shrugged off my suit jacket. “I drove him home and then went home myself.”
“Oh for the love of porn Seto! What happen to the balls-out dude I fell for 25 years ago” Shojiki sighed through the phone.
“He realized he’s gay and not as invincible as he thought he was.” I grumbled as I slipped off my tie and shirt.
“I knew it; you’re getting placid in your old age.” She grumbled.
“Well excuse me, not all of us are immortal and have the body of a twenty-year old.” I growled, sitting on the bed. “Think about it, Shojiki. I am 46 years old, a bachelor and my little brother gets more action than I do.”
“Not to mention you are pining over someone who you should have admitted you liked 20 years prior.” She shot at me.
“Oh just shut up Jiki.” I flop back on the bed, annoyed that it knocked the breath out of more than it did 10 years before. Shit, I am getting old.
“Face it Seto, you need to either grow some brass balls and make a move or some hot chick or dude is gunna snatch Atemu up.” She said, reminding me for the millionth time that Atemu is bi.
“I know,” I growled.
“I just want the best for you, set-chan.” She said quietly. I softened at the use of my nickname.
“I know, Jiki. I know. Retail therapy tomorrow?”
“You bet, honey! There are some Jimmy Choos that are screaming my name.” I chuckle at her excitement. Nothing clears the air better with Shojiki than a little shopping and me being one of the few men who can stand her nihilistic tendencies when she shops is a bonus in her eyes.
“Alright, see you in the morning, good night, Shojiki.”
“Good night Seto. Try not to have wet dreams about Atemu tonight, kay?”
“SHOJIKI!”
Her laughter sounds through my Bluetooth as I hang up.
I can’t promise the impossible.
