Confessions of the Heart
Chapter 3
“Unca Seto!!!”
I get bumrushed by Shojiki's daughter, Nzingha. I pick up the red headed little girl before she can knock me over. Her pale green wings glisten in the sunlight as they flutter happily. She buries her brown face in my neck as I carry her back in the house. Shojiki sits on the arm of her couch, grinning.
“Nzingha, didn't your mother tell you not to show your wings when you're outside?” I softly admonish the girl, sitting on the couch with her in my lap.
She giggles. “oops, sorry. But I am so happy!”
“you saw me last week,” I point out as I tickle her. She giggles again.
“i-hee hee- know but-hee- mommy said you and she were going shopping.” She laughs, finally squirming out of my hold.
“you were going shopping with her.” Shojiki corrects her daughter, setting her on her feet. “now go get packed so you can go to your daddy's house.”
“okay mommy,” with a gleam in her emerald and honey flecked eyes, she scurries upstairs to her room. Shojiki shakes her head.
“that chile is off the chain sometimes.” She sighs, flopping on the couch before me. I grin at her southern accent.
“I don't know, she seems pretty good to me.” I reply.
“that's because she thinks that if she acts good around you, she'll get stuff she likes.”
I laugh. “like mother, like daughter.”
“I dunno, she is still gushing over that Gucci bag you gave her. I would only be like that if it was a Coach.”
“you have a more experienced taste. Anyway, you're ready to go?” I say, standing and helping her up as well.
“you. Do you mind dropping her off at Blaze's?” she asks as Nzingha thunders downstairs.
“not at all.”
----------------------------------------
After several hours of shopping, we take a break in the food court. I sip a calorie laden milkshake from chick-fil-a while Shojiki munches on a cinnabon.
“ah, nothing like carbs after a wonderful morning of shopping.” She sighs happily. I grin.
“you say that now but your personal trainer is going to whip your ass on that treadmill.” I retort.
“and yours is going to faint at the thought that you actually ate something that wasn't meat or a salad,” she shot back. She does have a point.
“so where to next?”
“how about spencer's so you can have some naughty toys to play with Atemu?” she grins evilly.
“how about not, jiki?”
“oh come on Seto! You gotta keep it spicy!”
“keep what spicy? There is nothing there! we're just friends!”
“you can be more-“
“more what, shojiki?”
I pale at the sound of that voice. Oh for the love of gods, let it be Yugi…
“hey Atemu! I got a story for you! Have a seat.”
“shojiki…”I growl at her as Atemu sits down.
“oh, just chill Seto. Look Atemu, I got this friend, right?” she says, turning her back to me. Oh, she is so gunna get it later…
“right.” He says, setting his shopping bags down. Hm…I guess he was picking up some new clothes for Umeta…
“he has been in love with this girl for a loooonnnnngggg ass time but she don't know it.”
“okay.”
“she recently got divorced and I am all like `bust a move son!' but still he hesitates.” She dramatizes, slapping a hand over her face. Atemu chuckles at her histrionics.
“what's holding him back?” he asks.
“one, he's scared that he might ruin their friendship and two, she gotta a kid and maybe ain't got the time for a relationship right now.” I agree with the first of her statement but I wasn't thinking of that second part. Dammit, what if she's right? I would just look like a prick if I pull Atemu into a relationship now. Maybe I should wait until Umeta is out of college…
“hmm…it seems like he is just using excuses to stop himself from taking big risks in his life. I understand that he doesn't want to ruin a good friendship but to let his feelings stay on the backburner is damaging too. I mean, what if she decides to remarry? Then he will have to go through her being with another man all over again.” Atemu says, after a pause. I stare at him, a little stunned.
Shojiki grins. “that's exactly what I have been trying to tell you, Seto. Now if you two will excuse me, there is a Dior suit callin' my name.”
And with that, she left. She is lucky I left my gun at home….
“Seto?”
I look at him and cringe. He looks so uncomfortable but so cute. There is a light blush on his face.
“can you meet me at my apartment tonight? Around 6?” I ask in a rush before he can say anything. I would rather to not be rejected in a mall, upscale or not.
“uhm…sure.” He says, looking down. I stand.
“thank you.” I whisper before I haul ass to yell at a certain red-headed fairy...
-----------------------------------------------------------
“oh, admit it. If I hadn't said anything, your balls would have shriveled up and died from the lack of masculinity you were displaying.” Shojiki taunted as I hunted through my closet for something to wear. I tossed a pair of American Eagle jeans behind me, satisfied at the yelp I heard when they landed on her.
“but still, the mall, jiki?! Of all places, the mall?” I straighten up and glare at her. To my fury, she just shrugs.
“it was convenient that he was there.” she answers simply.
“one day...I am going to kill you…” I threaten as I find a satisfactory pair of pants. Now to find a shirt…
She just grins like the mischevious fairy she is.
“you'll be too busy ravishing Atemu to do that.”
----------------------------------------------------------
I sit on my couch, nervous out of my mind. Shojiki had left an hour earlier after a bit of her form of encouragement: taunting my clothes and making a mess of my nerves. I swear, one day, that girl will pay. But now I wait alone for Atemu.
The doorbell rings and I shoot up answer it. I glance at the clock though I don't need it to tell me that he was fifteen minutes late. I already knew that in my head.
“I am so sorry, Seto. Umeta's friend had a sudden asthma attack so I had to drop her off at Yugi's and it took me a little longer than I expected to calm her down,” he panted, it being obvious that he ran here. Well at least I knew he hadn't tried to stand me up.
“that's alright but I would rather you call me and tell me you will be late than almost bust a lung trying to get here,” I reply as I let him inside.
“I know. It's just that my mind is fifty million places at once, the top three being Umeta, you and Savira.” He says as he collapses on the couch. My heart flutters. Did he just say I was on his mind?
“oh really now? And why is that?” I say casually as I sit beside him, resting my arm behind him. I was so nervous before he got here but now I am calm and I feel like I can face anything.
“well Umeta is not adjusting to school properly, her Japanese is a little rusty, Savira is all but AWOL and then there is you-“ he turns his head and realize how close we are and blushes. It brings a smile to my lips.
“what about me?” I ask, drawing closer, secretly delighted that he doesn't lean away.
“you…you…I don't quite know what to say about you.”
“don't say anything at all,” I whisper, our lips breaths away. “let me take care of you.”
And with that, I kiss my ex-rival…

Mitzumi: here again by popular demand. *shakes head* why is that more people like this more than the original series that spawned it? Whatever. You know what to do.
