It had been well over a year since the yamis had fused with the hikaris for the sake of the world, a year since Battle City had ended and the outcome was decided. Everything and everyone was at peace once more and nobody had gone after the millennium items ever since. But Ryou found himself thinking like his yami, acting more like Bakura day after day and the light inside his soul and heart drowning within the darkness placed in his body. He found he enjoyed the sight of blood, enjoyed the copper-like taste and the killing to get what he wanted, needed and craved.

The silver-haired teen sat on his bed, toying with the dagger in his hands, throwing it up by the handle and catching it by the blade. He didn't mind that the blade sometimes dug into the flesh of his palm because it drew the crimson liquid he so desired. The dagger was something Bakura had left behind, something that had been used to slash at his body again and again countless nights over the years since he'd gotten the Ring from his father. And now it was Ryou's, the dagger he used for his killings and for his own amusement. The elder Bakura lay at his feet, beaten and slashed bloody, bleeding into the pure white carpet and staining it red. Ryou twirled the blade between his fingers, smiling darkly at the pained moans coming from his own father. He needed a toy and the older man seemed perfect for the job.

Chocolate orbs opened up and glanced up at the insanity dancing within his son's own depths, the darkness clouded over the once kind eyes. "R-Ryou, why......" His father coughed, bringing up blood that had clogged up his mouth. He was interrupted by a dark chuckle and Ryou stood, the blade dropping to the floor and bringing his bloodied hand up to his lips.

"Why?" the boy hissed, delicate tongue licking his cuts clean. "Because I need a pet, old man, and not the kind of domesticated animal you keep around the house. I need one that will keep me entertained until I become bored with its presence, a pet that will submit to my every whim and command. You are currently filling in that spot, father, but some desires I can't take out on you." Ryou picked up the dagger, sheathed it into one of his combat boots and walked towards the door before turning, giving the older man one last look, a cold smile curling on his lips. "Ryou Bakura is dead, you lost the one you cared about long ago. I have risen in his ashes, everything he wasn't and anything he couldn't be." With that, the silver-haired pre-adult left the room, leaving his father to collapse down into tears and wonder what had caused his son to become the way he was.

Yuugi sighed as he walked home, hands in his pockets and the puzzle around his neck as always. He'd just spent the afternoon playing video games at the Arcade with Katsuya and Hiroto, beating Katsuya almost twenty times in duels. Dueling wasn't much fun anymore. Not without Yami around to smile and congratulate him even if the ancient Pharaoh hadn't been visible to the others without switching minds with the Child Prodigy. Anzu had left the group a six months ago, her parents moving to America. Her e-mails and letters had begun to get smaller before they finally stopped three months ago and now they hardly heard from the brunette girl at all. His ears pricked up when he thought he heard something behind him and he looked over his shoulder, frowning when he saw a small group of street thugs, about four or five. Like the other hikaris, he slightly resembled his yami now -- he was a little bit taller, coming to Katsuya's shoulders, and his eyes were narrowed and crimson, no longer the vibrant amethyst they had been.

Yuugi turned, facing the thugs. A couple of years ago he would have objected to violence of any kind but after fusing with Yami he'd begun taking martial arts and was a first degree black belt in all of his classes. Not even Ushio, the school bully, picked on him anymore. "Yes? Is there something you want?" he spoke calmly as they circled him, hands still in his pockets.

One of the thugs stepped forward, cracking his knuckles lightly. "Yea, yousa got somethin' we want." He spoke with the same accent Katsuya had only it had a bit of a Southern drawl inside. Yuugi smirked slightly like his yami used to, meeting the leader's eyes. "Oh? And what would that be?" His hands freed themselves from their confinement, his training trying to push free and punish these pathetic thugs like they should be.

The leader matched his smirk with a cruel one. "Yea, a body dat's beggin' ta be fucked." He swung his fist, Yuugi side-stepping out of the way and phasing out, appearing behind him. His leg shot up between the older boy's legs and the leader went down, clutching his crotch and moaning in pain. The multi-colour-haired boy had met others like this group out on these streets, his body seeming to be one everyone wanted. He pulled a card from his pouch that hung from a leather belt, smiling when he saw that it was the one he wanted. He threw the card up in the air, the thugs stopping what their attacks to see what was happening.

"I call the Celtic Guardian!" Yuugi shouted and the elfin swordsman appeared next to him, ready to strike when ordered. The teen thrusted his hand forward, the Eye of Ra appearing on his forehead, smiling coldly. His heart felt nothing for the street wanderers. "Attack!"

In a few minutes, the bloodshed was over. Celtic shook the blood off his sword, sheathing it and turning towards the one who'd called him. "Yuugi-sama, you need to stop walking into trouble," the elf spoke softly, amber eyes narrowing slightly. He and Dark didn't like the way the teen had changed over the year, the darkness of the Pharaoh's spirit pouring over the once-happy soul. Soon nothing would be left of the one the monsters in his deck had come to adore. He began to change -- ears becoming shorter and the markings on his cheeks disappearing, his garb being replaced by one more like this modern age. "Dark and I won't always be around to protect you, you know that don't you?" His master only turned, ignoring his words and continuing his way home as he had been before the incident began. Celtic sighed and jogged to catch up to the teen, noticing with a heavy heart that the ring of red around the moon had intensified.

This wasn't the first time blood had been spilt tonight.

"I'm worried about Yuug, Tristan[1]," Katsuya spoke softly, eyes closed slightly as the two walked home together much like their friend had been. The taller of the duo looked at his best friend, blinking. He was the only one of the group who knew Katsuya's secret affections for the smaller teen, the only one who knew the blonde so well as they had been together since they'd met in elementary school. "Each day I see a different person in him. He's grown colder and more distant from us, oh Kami have you even seen the way Ushio looks at him now when they come across each other?"

"What about Ryou?" Tristan questioned, mentioning the silver-haired boy for the first time that evening. "You seen that crazed look in his eyes in the halls, man? It's like his yami's back." Katsuya stopped walking, looking down at his hands as the brunette stopped a few steps ahead of him. His hands were shaking......and not from the cold. "We've lost them, Tristan," the blonde whispered, wind whipping around them on the quiet, lonely street. "Ever since their other halves fused with them we lost them. We LOST them!" Hysterical tears were running down his cheeks by now, arms longing to hold the precious teen he'd wanted to for so long. But no, the Yuugi he'd fallen in love with wasn't there anymore, replaced with a cruel persona greatly resembling his yami in some ways. The blonde was afraid to be around him most of the time, afraid of what could probably happen if the boy who'd lit up his dark life lost it completely and Tristan wasn't there to back him up. He knew each time blood was spilled on the streets it was either Yuugi or Ryou, the minds of the street thugs having been driven insane or the bodies totaled so you couldn't tell who it was. Katsuya wrapped his arms around himself, hugging his chest lightly but tightly, a small whimper escaping.

Tristan watched his friend, not phased by his outburst. Katsuya had done this a million times before, had broken down into tears whenever afraid for himself. The brunette hadn't told him yet, but he felt something deep inside for the silver-haired teen in their class since Ryou had transferred from a different school, not even his best friend knew this secret yet because he was still trying to figure out his feelings......but it looked like he was too late to tell Ryou.

They were too late for them both.

The light of their friends was gone forever.

End of prologue

[1] For some reason, I prefer Tristan's dubbed name. Don't ask me why but I think it has something to do with him being named after a car brand :P I don't like the guy anyway.

In the next chapter of Dark Desires::

Anzu comes back to Domino, feeling something will happen soon. More insight to Yuugi and Ryou's lives are shown and Katsuya goes to the cold, aforementioned teen. Will Tristan be able to get to his best friend before it's too late, or will Ryou get in his way with dark suggestions in mind?
