Chapter 04: Dark Deeds

Yami tore through the streets of Domino, running as fast as his legs could carry him, desperate to get away from the promenade and Yugi. His face was red as he ran, both from the lack of air in his lungs and the sheer embarrassment and shame at what he had just done.

It had been a split second reaction. Hearing Yugi talk, blaming himself for something he might have done… Yami's feelings had got the better of him. He didn't even realise he had done it, until he felt the boy's soft, warm lips against his own. Why? Why had he kissed him, in front of everyone?

The look in Yugi's eyes had said all Yami needed to know. Gazing up at his partner, those adoring eyes widened in shock and fear. Seeing that expression made Yami feel so ashamed of himself that he had turned and ran, and continued to run until his legs burned from the effort he put into them.

Yami turned a corner and came to a stop on a street opposite the part, his legs unable to run anymore. There was no air in his lungs and his muscles were burning, aching from lack of air. Grasping pathetically onto a wall Yami let himself sink slowly to his knees, and stared emptily at the ground as he tried to get his breath back.

“Well, well…” came a voice from behind him. “That was quite a daring little feat you did back there. Although I must say I wasn't impressed by your `kiss and run' technique. I think you're losing your cool, Pharaoh.”

Yami's eyes snapped open and looked up, just as the tall figure of Marik walked past and stood in front of him. Marik looked back down at him with a superior smile on his face. A smile so smug that it made him seem far taller and quite sinister, and made Yami feel even smaller so he had to look away.

“Now, this is what I like to see,” said Marik. “You on your knees before me like a whimpering little kitten.” Marik then knelt down and placed his hand under the Pharaoh's chin, lifting his head up so that they were gazing eye to eye. “But perhaps you prefer it when we're like this… Close… Like you and Yugi.”

Marik put his face a little closer, but when Yami realised what he was doing he quickly thrust his arms outwards to push the young Egyptian away from him. As he raised his hands Marik grabbed hold of them and pulled Yami to the side, forcing him down onto the floor and sitting astride him.

“Get off me!” Yami shouted angrily, struggling fiercely. The lack of air in his lungs made it harder for him to use all his strength, so Marik simply pushed down his hands so that they were pinned to the floor. He pulled away the Millennium Puzzle from around the struggling Pharaoh's neck and quickly tied his wrists together.

“Now then,” Marik sneered as he put his face close to Yami's again. “I wonder… Shall we wait to see if your little aibou comes, or shall I just take you right here?”

In a desperate attempt to get the Egyptian off, Yami kicked out with his legs, striking Marik square in the back. Marik cried out and while he was distracted Yami rolled over, pushing Marik off and allowing him to stand up, now that his muscles were finally working again. Without even waiting he began to run away from Marik.

Marik climbed to his knees and put his fingers to his mouth, blowing a sudden sharp whistle. As he whistled, two dark-cloaked Rare Hunters came out from a nearby alley and caught Yami as he tried to run past. One of the Rare Hunters quickly put a hand over the Pharaoh's mouth while the other picked him up off the ground. Marik nodded his head over towards the park, and the Rare Hunters began to drag the struggling Pharaoh off, Marik close behind.

“Yami! Yami! Where are you!?”

Yugi stopped running and looked around the empty street, searching for anything that might look like Yami. But he couldn't find head or tail of his partner anywhere, and street after street remained empty. Perhaps Yami didn't want to be found.

“Yami!” Yugi called again.

When he received no answer, Yugi looked down and carefully put his fingers to his lips again. As he touched them he could feel Yami's lips again, as though they were still pressed against him. Yugi's hand trembled and he clenched his fist, eyes squeezed shut as he quietly shook for a moment. He had to know why. He wanted someone to explain the feeling that he was getting every time he thought back to that moment on the promenade. He needed Yami to explain to him.

“Aaagh!”

Yugi gasped and looked up, his eyes falling on the street ahead. That was Yami's voice for sure… and it sounded like he was in pain. Yugi forgot about his shaking and began to run again, calling out Yami's name as he sped round the corner towards the park. As he turned the corner he could see the park clearly, and when he saw what was going on he cried out Yami's name again, and picked up speed.

The Rare Hunters pushed Yami harshly forward, and the boy fell face forward onto the hot tarmac floor. Faint streaks of blood covered his face and shirt, seeping from the cuts on his face. His wrists were bleeding as well, the chains of the puzzle digging hard into his skin and nipping it.

Marik was there, standing over him with a satisfied smile on his face. As he heard Yugi coming towards them he looked up, and once again that sly, knowing grin appeared. He watched as Yugi jumped over the park fence and ran into the park, completely unaware. Unaware of the danger he was running into.

“Yami! What did you do, Marik!?” Yugi yelled. He ran to Yami's side and knelt beside him. The Pharaoh was unconscious, but he was still breathing. Angrily Yugi looked up at Marik. “Why!?”

Marik smirked. “Why? Because I wanted to lure you here. THAT'S why.”

Yugi blinked. “Me? Why? I don't get it.”

Marik laughed. “It's simple. By defeating the Pharaoh, I get control of the puzzle. But…” he added as he undid his cloak and let it fall on the floor behind him. “I don't necessarily have to beat the Pharaoh in a Shadow Game to claim what's mine.”

Yugi stood up, but as he moved Marik suddenly reached forward and grabbed Yugi's shoulders. He pulled the young boy close to him and looked into his scared eyes.

“Besides,” he said, more softly than before. “Like the Pharaoh, your innocence attracts me. I wonder… Will Yami still love you after that innocence has gone?”

Emerald: Whee! An update! Go me! And thanks for the many, many hits and reviews. I didn't think this fic would be this popular. Thank you all so much. And yes, I know Yugi isn't referred to as `hikari' I just consider him to be. As Dark in DNAngel says `If I am the darkness then he is the light.' So there. Yup!
