Chapter 05: Don't Say You Love Me
Nighttime had already approached by the time Yami finally began to stir from his unconscious slumber. His first sensation of feeling was that of his whole body aching horribly, from his head all the way down to his feet. His head hurt the worst, feeling like a thousand bricks were being dropped from a great height onto his forehead, hitting him in the same spot between his eyes. Yami could feel the blood pounding in his ears like a loud drum, and it just wouldn't stop.
Yami didn't remember anything that had happened at first, for his mind was still whirling like a blender and pounding so much it made it impossible for him to think. Slowly but surely the memories began to return to him, and Yami became aware that the ground beneath him was no longer hard but soft and comfortable, and he was lying on his back instead of his front, as he remembered. Suddenly feeling confused and lost, Yami flung his arms out desperately and grabbed the edges of what he was lying on. He tried to speak, but in his confusion it was just an incoherent mumble.
“So. You're awake then?”
Hearing the voice brought Yami back into reality, and his eyes snapped open in a flash. He sat up very suddenly - too suddenly perhaps, for a wave of dizziness swept over him and the blood rush in his head became stronger. He almost fell over, but his determination to stay awake and not fall to the dizziness kept him from fainting.
Looking around, wide-eyed, Yami realised that he was back home, lying on the couch in the front room. The room was dark, with all of the curtains drawn, but Yami knew it was nighttime. The only lights came from the muted television, the late night images of the news flashing up on screen. Yami then looked over to his left, and spotted a shadowy figure sitting beside him on the couch.
It was Yugi. He was sat on the edge of the couch with his back to Yami, staring emptily at the television screen. Yami didn't notice that the boy had changed clothes, and was sat with his arms wrapped tightly around his body. Nor did he notice that Yugi wouldn't turn around and look at him, instead keeping his gaze firmly focused on the ground in front of the television screen.
It was in that second that all the memories of that day came flooding back into Yami's head. The amusement park and his kiss with Yugi, to the moment that Marik and his Rare Hunters had dragged him harshly into the park. Yami remembered being beaten up - the pain in his body easily reminded him of that. Unfortunately everything after the fifth punch became a blur, and Yami could only remember flashing images of the Rare Hunters around him.
There was also Marik's voice echoing in his mind. While Yami had been fighting for consciousness he could hear Marik's voice taunting him… saying something… something about Yugi. What was he going to do to Yugi!?
“Yugi!” Yami said, extremely relieved.
He forgot about the kiss and the pain in his body for a moment and scrambled to his knees. He then threw his arms around Yugi and brought the younger boy close to him in a tight embrace. He was just so relieved to see that Yugi was still there and okay. Yami then gently nuzzled his head in the back of Yugi's neck, showing just how relieved he was.
Yugi did not respond to Yami's embrace. Nor did he lift his gaze from the floor, or even glance at Yami. In fact he did absolutely nothing but stare at the floor, his mouth half-open as though he meant to speak, his hands lightly gripping the edge of the couch. The television screen flashed to another screen, now a weather report of a large storm that was about to hit the city.
“…………Yami…” Yugi then said finally, his voice extremely quiet it was barely even a whisper. “…………Why…… Why did you kiss me…?”
Yami opened his eyes and looked at Yugi. He was still unable to see the boy's face, but for the first time he realised that something was wrong. The boy's body was firm and rigid, and only seemed to get firmer the longer he held him. As a result Yami let his arms slowly fall to his sides, feeling his worst fears coming true.
“…I…”
“I want to know the truth, Yami,” Yugi interrupted him. There was a sudden harshness in the tone of his voice that made Yami jump. There was also something else in his voice - something that Yami didn't pick up on at the time. “Go on… You can tell me…”
Yami took a deep breath and swallowed hard. There was no point in denying it now anyway, and he just couldn't lie to the one he loved so much. This wasn't anything like the way he imagined Yugi finding out, but then again, was there any good time to tell someone you loved them? Especially a fellow male…?
Yami swallowed again, pushing away the block in his throat. “I… kissed you because… I… …… I lo…… I love you, Yugi.” Finally. He had said the words. Yami closed his eyes and looked away, awaiting Yugi's response.
Yugi didn't respond at first. He simply sat there silently, his eyes wide as he stared at the floor. After a second or two he tightened his grip on the edge of the couch, and his bottom lip trembled ever so slightly. As he stared he felt the hot sting of tears beginning to form in the corners of his eyes, and he quickly shut them to hold them back. Unfortunately doing so broke his defence, and his body began to shake.
“You… You love me…?” he repeated quietly, trying his hardest to quell the tremor in his voice. He was failing, however, and his shakes became more noticeable. “You love me? You meant you want to fuck me, right?”
Yami looked up in surprise, and stared at the back of Yugi's trembling head. He was beginning to realise that there was something seriously wrong with Yugi. Something horrible was different about him… Yami could feel it…
“I mean, that's what you people want, isn't it?” Yugi continued, still refusing to look at Yami. “That's all anyone wants. To get laid… And then what? `Oh, I'm sorry, but I don't think it'll work between us?' Or would you even bother saying that? You'd probably just leave me in the gutter and move on to the next poor guy. You love me…?” The trembling of his voice got the better of him then, and Yugi began to choke into a sob.
“Yugi, what are you saying…?” Yami asked him, shocked by what Yugi was saying.
He reached out and softly touched Yugi's shoulder, and was even more shocked when Yugi suddenly lashed out with his hand and pushed Yami's hand away. Yugi then leapt off the couch and spun round to face Yami, revealing his face for the first time that night. Yami gasped as he saw a number of bruises dotted against his delicate skin, darkened further by the shadows of the room.
“DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH ME!” Yugi shouted angrily, his violet eyes now portraying an aura of anger rather than innocence. “Don't you DARE say you love me! You honestly think I could love someone like you? You're a freak! A freak! I wouldn't want you anywhere near me! Just keep away from me!”
Once again Yugi's trembling got the better of him and he fell down to his knees, shaking. He put his hand over his mouth as he began to sob loudly, feeling sick to his stomach. The tears he had been fighting so hard to hold back were let loose then and began to stream down Yugi's cheeks and hands, dripping onto his knees.
Unable to see the only he loved cry like that any longer, Yami quickly came down off the couch and tried to take Yugi into his arms. He didn't even get halfway around Yugi before the boy hurriedly pushed outwards, forcing Yami away from him. Yami lost his balance and fell back onto the floor, his head barely missing the side of the couch.
“I said DON'T TOUCH ME!” Yugi repeated, climbing to his feet.
By the time Yami got to his feet Yugi was already at the front door, pulling open the latch and throwing the door open. He then ran out into the night, and into the rain that was starting to fall outside.
Yami let him go. He had to, for there was nothing he could do to make Yugi stay. Nor could he make Yugi love him in return.
He walked over towards the open front door and looked out into the street. There was no sign of Yugi anywhere, and the rain was beginning to fall more thickly. There was also a harsh, cold wind blowing, ruffling Yami's hair and making him shiver. He wished Yugi would come back, but he didn't feel he had the right to make Yugi stay.
So instead he shut the front door, leaving the latch unlocked. He then leaned against the door and very slowly slid down onto the floor, his head sinking into his hands.
