Chapter 1.
The new girl.

There was a distant scream in the midst of the ancient city. The pharaoh leapt from his seat on the palace balcony and viewed over its railing for the source of the scream. His strange looking pet cheetah, with spots that looked more like strips, walked up and nudged at his hand. She had a strange human like intelligence, and as she turned toward the door, the pharaoh took the initiative to follow her.

He followed her with difficulty, though she slowed her pace. Eventually the cheetah stopped and to the pharaohs horror he saw two people stabbed viciously to death and a deranged looking man over a whimpering child. She had already been attacked, her arm bleeding profusely. The man raised his dagger bringing it down quickly toward the child…

Yami sat up quickly. He rubbed his eyes and looked around in his soul room. That was another dream from his past, but this one seemed different somehow. Yami often had dreams of his past, and somehow they fit with other dreams or events in his present life like a puzzle. He replayed this one in his mind over and over. Never before had he seen that odd looking cheetah, but according to the dream it was his pet. And who was that little girl? She didn't even look Egyptian, her hair had been blond, not a common thing in ancient Egypt.

Yami realized that Yugi was already one his way to school; it was a bit earlier then normal.

`Morning, Yugi.' Yami yawned `why are you up so early?' he asked

`Morning, don't you remember that there's going to be a new student today? I though I told you.' Yugi sighed.

`You know me… I don't always pay attention while you're at school unless we duel.' Yami grinned.

`Yeah I suppose your right.'

When the reached their first class they saw their friends Tea' Joey and Tristan and sat down next to them.

“Do you know if the new kid's here yet?” Yugi asked.

“No, class hasn't even started yet.” Joey said.

“It will soon, though.” Tristan pointed out, and just as he said that the bell rang. Every one sat at their assigned seats. Their teacher walked into the room holding some books, which she placed on the front desk. Then she looked back at the class and greeted them.

“Well class,” she started. With her usual teacher smile that all of them had. “As you know we are expecting a new student today, but it seems that she isn't here yet. We'll get started while we wait for her.”

A whole 20 minutes had passed and the girl didn't show up. Yami and Yugi, as well as the other students, were wondering where she was. Maybe she had gotten sick today and couldn't come, or she got lost, or slept in. but suddenly the door creaked open and a girl with long golden blond hair and piercing, dark blue eyes walked in awkwardly into the room. She was shaking slightly and seemed to be having trouble standing.

“Sorry I'm late teacher… I—had something…unexpected… come up and it took longer then I thought.” Her voice was just as shaken as her stance. Yugi noticed that she had her hand under her uniform shirt, she didn't move it at all; he assumed that she was probably running and holding a stitch in her side.

“That's ok; it is just your first day anyways. Could you tell the class about your self while you're up here?” the teacher asked. The girl groaned.

“Do I have to?” she mumbled.

“Not if you really don't want to but it would be nice to know your name.” the teacher persisted. The girl rolled her eyes.

“Sam…err, Samantha Tarian is my full name.” she said, “I came here from America during the summer.”

“Well Sam, it's nice to have you in class. Let's see…” the teacher looked around to find any empty seats. “There's a seat by Yugi, that's him,” she finished, pointing at him. Samantha shot a small smirk at the teacher.

“Not hard to find is he?” She joked. Yugi could hear Joey holding back a laugh behind him.

Samantha sat down where she was instructed… still she hadn't moved her hand from her waist. She glanced at Yugi and nodded, he nodded back. She then glanced at the millennium puzzle, raising an eyebrow at it.

“That's an interesting object you got there.” she said.

“My grandpa gave it to me after going to Egypt.” Yugi said, he felt he shouldn't say anything more, she probably wouldn't believe him if he said. `Oh it holds the spirit of an ancient pharaoh who takes over now and again.' Yami laughed, he was hovering as a spirit on Samanthas' other side.

“Have we met somewhere? You seem familiar.” Samantha asked suddenly.

“Uh… well I'm `king of games' you know, with duel monsters. Maybe you saw me on TV.” Yugi suggested.

“No… I don't think I have. I feel like I've met you somewhere… else…” she looked like something just dawned on her. Yugi looked at her questionably.

“Never mind,” She said hastily. Yugi continued to try and ask but she said nothing more for the rest of class. Five minutes before the bell rang, however, she moved her hand form her side for the first time. It was covered in blood. Yugi gasped silently and Samantha quickly hid her hand back under her shirt and looked at him dangerously.

“Don't say a word.” She hissed. But Yugi still spoke up.

“Is that what kept you? What happened?” he whispered urgently.

“I'm not telling you.” She hissed

“Are you covering it with something?” Yugi asked.

“Just a cloth,” Sam growled. “I was in a hurry.”

“Let me tell someone.”

“No!” she yelled. The bell rang just then and she was the first to leave. Yugi followed after her, he just didn't think that she should go the entire day hiding her side like she was.

`Yugi, you should let me take over.' Yami insisted

`No, she's new; I don't want to scare her.' Yugi insisted. Yami rolled his eyes and just watched as Yugi finally caught up with the girl.

Yugi grabbed on to Samanthas' free arm and swung her around. (She was about Yamis' height.)

“Why can't I tell any one?” he asked more forcefully then he would have liked.

“They'll ask questions.” She said shadily. She glanced at his puzzle once more. “I'm sure you could say the same thing.” Yugi looked stunned.

“W-what do you mean?” he asked.

“I know that's not just some souvenir.” She said with a smirk before releasing her grasp from Yugi and raced off to her next class.

`What do you think that was about?' Yugi asked Yami moments afterwards. Yami didn't answer, he just stared after Samantha.

`Yami?' Yugi waved an arm at Yamis' face.

`Sorry… yeah, that was strange.' Yami said absentmindedly. `Do you think she knows about the millennium items?'

`I don't know we'll need to keep an eye on her.' Yugi said.

They met Samantha a couple more times that day in other classes. She completely ignored them… though she also ignored every one else except a teacher when they would ask her a question. She disappeared during lunch, Yami and Yugi assumed she took that time to bandage her wounds more properly because afterwards, she wasn't holding on to her waist like she was that morning.

After school they made to go after Samantha. But when she turned a corner, she had disappeared. All that was there in her place was a raven that flew away. Yami wanted to try and find her but Yugi felt they should just go home.

“We'll want to wait till we get to know her a little better before we go and follow her.” Yugi said. Yami walked besides him on the way home. He wanted to get out of the puzzle for a change. “The girls' strange,” Yugi finished.

“Yeah but, I want to find out where she disappeared off too. Don't you?” Yami asked.

“Well… yeah, but she freaks me out somehow.” Yugi mumbled.

“We always run into freaky people who know about the items. You have to admit.” Yami pointed out. Yugi nodded vaguely.

“Yes, but Samantha is different somehow.” Yugi replied. “Don't tell me you can't feel it either?” Yami shrugged. Yes he did notice that she was different then the others they have met. Yugi didn't seem to trust her, but Yami wasn't sure.

On the way home they passed the house next to the game shop, someone had just recently moved in, but neither Yugi nor Yami have ever seen the person who bought the place. At the time neither of them took much notice. But Yugi thought of something.

“Hey, that reminds me, I wonder were Sam lives anyways. Do you think she moved here?” he asked.

“Nah, she went in the opposite direction that we were going in.” Yami said mater-of-factly

“True, hey look a dog.” Yugi pointed to the street corner. A dog had just turned the corner and stopped to look at the two boys with amber eyes. It looked really odd, almost like a wolf, it was black; some of it was reddish-black. Its chest, paws, and the tip of its tail were all golden brown. But the weirdest thing was the diamond shape on its head; it looked almost like a paw print. It tilted its head at them and padded across the street and out of sight.

“It didn't have a collar, I wonder if it's a stray.” Yugi wondered out loud.

“Probably,” Yami agreed.

They went inside, and up to Yugis' room, where he threw his backpack onto the bed. Yami sat at the windowsill and looked out to the neighbors' yard. He did a double take. Samantha had just walked into the house.

“Yugi, looks like you were right. Sam dose live there.” he said.

“Really?” Yugi said walking over to the window

“Yeah, look.” Yami said. Sam had gone out to the back yard and sat in a chair swing that was on the porch. Yugi moved away form the window and toward his bedroom door.

“I don't know about you but I want to see what she dose.” Yugi said.

“You just said not too long ago that we should wait till we get to know her.” Yami said.

“Well yeah, but this makes things a bit easier. If she doses something strange I want to know.” Yami stood up and followed his smaller self out the door.

There was a tree growing against the wooden fence that separated Samantha's house form the game shop. Yami and Yugi climbed it and looked through the leaves and braches to see her. She wasn't doing anything strange at all. She was just sitting comfortably on the swing and holding a pad of paper and a pencil in her hands. Yami thought it looked like she was drawing, judging by the movement of her hand. Yugi apparently thought otherwise.

“I wonder what she's writing, plans or something.” He said

“It looks more like she's drawing Yugi.” Yami mumbled.

“How do you know that though?” Yugi said turning to Yami. Yami didn't answer. He continued to look at Samantha.

“Yami?” Yugi asked again. “Yami what are you doing?” he persisted. Yami wasn't paying attention to Yugi though. He had climbed a little further out on the limb he was sitting on to get a better view of Samantha. He couldn't help but think it… she was cute. Her blond hair shone like gold under the noon sun. her skin was flawless and Yami remembered her dark blue eyes.

WHACK!

Yamis' thoughts were suddenly obscured by a hard blow to the head

“YUGI! WHAT WAS THAT FOR!?” Yami yelled, forgetting that they were spying on Samantha.

“Would you shut up!?” Yugi whispered urgently. “What were you doing!?”

“Nothing! I was trying to get a better look at her.” Yami said truthfully.

“Did you hear anything I said?” Yugi asked.

“About what?” Yami asked stupidly.

“About what she may be up to you dolt.” Yugi sighed irritably. “What's wrong with you all of a sudden anyways?” Yugi asked… but yet again Yamis' eyes trailed off elsewhere.

“YAMI!” Yugi yelled… that's when Yami lost his balance. He fell face first into Samanthas' yard.

“You two are so loud.” Samantha said casually without looking up from her paper.

“Ow… sorry.” Yami grumbled. Sam looked up at him as he got up, a smirk spread across her face.

“I knew it.” Yami heard her mumble under her breath.

“What?” he asked.

“You too look a lot alike, are you his older brother?” Sam asked, ignoring Yami. Yugi jumped down from the tree and stood by Yami. They looked at each other.

“Uh…” Yami began

“yeah.” Yugi finished. Sam looked raised an eyebrow, but didn't press the matter further.

“Well, I would appreciate it if you would keep it quite. And don't spy on me Yugi. I'm not something you should worry about. Nor you…Yami?”

“Uh… yeah,” Yami said

“Well, your `brother' here did yell your name quite loudly.” Samantha smirked. Yugi grinned stupidly.

“Well, we'd better go inside. Come'n Yami,” he said pulling at Yamis' sleeve.

When they finally got back into the game shop they sighed with relief.

“Heh… she thinks were brothers.” Yami laughed.

“I doubt that. She was pretending to be stupid you could tell. She knows things, I'm sure she dose.” Yugi said cautiously.

“You know Yugi, your being very uncharacteristic right now.” Yami said

“How so?” Yugi asked

“I've never known you to think this badly of anyone.” Yami pointed out.

“She freaks me out! There is something really odd about Samantha that I can't put my finger on and that's making me nervous for some reason.” Yugi said

“She is different. I'm feeling something about her too that's unexplainable”

“You like her,” Yugi said, a sudden smile etching onto his face. Yamis' cheeks went red. “That's what you're feeling.”

“That's not what I mean!” Yami yelled defensively. Yugi rolled his eyes incredulously at him. Yami growled and disappeared into his soul room.
