Chapter 1
Japan 2002
Grandma's stories kept running threw her head as she sat in her window seat on the jet airliner. She is going to Japan to visit with her grandmother. Her grandmother called her weeks ago begging her to come to Japan for a visit and spend time with her like she used to when she was smaller. Of course Basteta was swamped at the time with work and was not able to book a flight until recently. Basteta helped her parents in Egypt with their archeology and did most of the filing and paper work on their finds. After that last call from her grandmother she did not get a call until Masika called her and told her "If you don't get your ass to Japan I am going to Egypt to drag you out of there!" After hearing her best friends voice filled with irritation Basteta finally gave in and told Masika she was leaving and that she would meet her at the airport.
I wonder why Masika was so upset? It isn't like I don't talk to her or anything. Something is not right… What am I saying of course everything is all right? Isn't it? Basteta shook herself from her thoughts. She did not want to think pessimistic thoughts at this time. All she wanted to do was get to Japan and get her visit over with so she can go back to working. Masika would call it hiding and truly, if Basteta were more honest with herself, she would call it that as well. Basteta laughed to herself as she remembered all the good times she and Masika had and all the trouble they got into. Especially the time when Masika and her decided to `wake' the dragons one day at her house after the story her grandmother told her. She will never forget it.
"Hey Masika!!" young Basteta yelled as she waved. "Hey Basteta! Ready to go play?" young Masika asked. "Of course! Guess what?" Basteta asked. "What?" Masika asked in return. "My grandmother told me this really neat story about dragons, and a king, and a sorcerer and everything. She also showed me this funny looking medallion and said, " `this is the very same medallion that holds the sleeping dragon, Dragoness, sealed within.' Or something like that." Basteta said. "Really? My grandmother told me a similar story and told me I was named after a warrior that survived the slaughter." Masika replied. "I have an idea Masika. Why don't we play `wake the dragons'"? Basteta asked Masika. "How do we play `wake the dragons'"? Masika asked Basteta. "Well we are going to need a medallion and maybe some paint and fire!" Basteta said excitedly. "Fire? What is the fire for?" Masika asked a little confused. "Well, dragons breathe fire right? So, I figured that to awaken a dragon you would need to put the medallion in some fire." Basteta said smiling broadly. "Cool! I hope it works, I would love to play with a dragon and ride it and…" Masika didn't get to finish what she was saying when Basteta grabbed her by the wrist and rushed into Masika's house. "Okay first we need the paint and then we need to get a medallion." Basteta was saying Masika as she raced for Masika's room. "After that we need to get some matches and wood for a fire." Basteta continued chattering. Once in Masika's room Basteta located the paint and some brushes. "Okay now we get the medallion now… right Basteta?"…
"Miss Baskin, miss Baskin?" the flight attendant's voice broke Basteta out of her recollection of the past. Basteta slowly shook her head and asked: "Yes, what is it?" "We will be arriving in Tokyo, Japan within minutes. Would you please fasten your seatbelt?" Basteta gazed the flight attendant for a moment and nodded her head. Basteta fastened her seatbelt and prepared for the landing. She knew Masika would be waiting for her at the airport. Basteta smiled at the thought of seeing her friend again, it felt like ages since she last saw her. In truth it really only been a couple of years, but knowing Masika she would fuss that I haven't visited her as often as needed. Basteta laughed at the thought of her friend's anger.
"Please all passengers fasten your seatbelts. As we are about to land at the airport of Tokyo, Japan." The air flight captain's voice came out of the speaker as Basteta prepared for the landing. Basteta sighed and closed her eyes. Flying didn't really bother her it is the taking off and landing part that did. Basteta took another deep breath as she flight the plane tip forward in a gentle descent. Her stomach rolled with the feeling of that descent. Basteta was afraid she was going to be sick and wouldn't be able to get up to go to the bathroom. Calm down Basteta. Deep breaths, just take deep breaths and everything will be fine. Finally, Basteta could hear the squeaking and squealing of the tires as the jet airliner landed at the airport. Basteta slowly opened her eyes and quickly grabbed a barf bag.
After purging her stomach of her airliner flight lunch Basteta felt better if not a little embarrassed. Sighing Basteta slowly got to her feet so she could grab her tote away bag and purse. She could hear the voices of the few passengers as she stood up. Brushing her self off and straitening her clothes Basteta reached above her to where her tote away bad was and her purse. After some difficulty with getting her tote away bag unstuck, Basteta reached for her purse and slung the strap over one shoulder. Basteta then got in line to exit the plane. Once Basteta exited the plane she went to retrieve her duffle bag. Since it wouldn't fit in the overhead compartment she had to put in the plane's storage area. Which she didn't like at all, it was only a duffle bag. Basteta sighed as she watched the luggage go around until her duffle bag came into sight. Quickly picking up the bag Basteta headed towards the waiting area.
Once she seated herself on a chair Basteta checked her things to make sure everything she owned was in there. She didn't trust airports no more than she trusted men and that was saying something. After checking her things and saw nothing was missing she headed outside where Masika was waiting for her. Quickly grabbing up her things Basteta headed down towards the doors. Once outside Basteta glanced around to see if she could see Masika. Next thing Basteta knew WHACK! "Where have you been? I have been waiting for you forever! Not to mention you're late and another thing what took you so damn long to come back to Japan?" Masika yelled at Basteta. Basteta rubbed her head and said sarcastically "Nice to see you to old friend. Are you not even going to say hello or ask me how my flight was?" "Well, I have a good mind to beat you black and blue. That was my hello after not visiting grandmother or me for two years! Oh by the way, how was the flight? Did you throw up again?" Masika said with a little less heat.
"For your information yes I did throw up again. That was the only bad part of the flight. Besides I was to busy remembering old times to actually hate the flight this time around." Basteta said a little annoyed. Masika then smiled brightly at her best friend and gave her a large hug. "Masika you're squeezing the life out of me!" Basteta said a little surprised. "Sorry Basteta. It is just I haven't seen you in so long." Masika said with tears in her eyes. "I know Masika and I am sorry. Work has been keeping me away and my parents as well. They are so sure they have found the tomb of the evil ones this time and I have been right there helping them." Basteta explained to Masika. "The evil ones? You don't mean…." Masika didn't get to finish when Basteta said, "The very same ones from the stories our grandmother's told us about. Marik the sorcerer and his closest followers, but I don't think they have really found it. Just a bunch of old artifacts and junk." Basteta said with a shrug.
"I hope your right Basteta. You know your parents; they won't stop until they have found the tomb. That could be a grave matter if they ever really did find the tomb." Masika said to Basteta. Basteta sighed. Her friend Masika believed in those old stories ever since they were little and Basteta just thought that they were just that stories. She never argued with Masika over it, though now at her age she shouldn't believe in fairy tales anymore. "Come on Masika I am tired and need some sleep. I think I might have jet lag this time around. Besides I am hungry, I threw up remember?" Basteta said to Masika. "Sure, we can stop at McDonalds for some burgers or something." Masika said to Basteta. Basteta just nodded and waited for Masika to head for the car.
Seeing her friend was ready to go Masika headed for the car. Once at the car Basteta put her things in the trunk as Masika climbed into the driver's seat. Soon the two were off to get something to eat. While on the way Masika thought about her friend and how she has changed so much. The one thing that has never changed is that Basteta never believed in the stories that were passed down through their families. Masika knew that Basteta thought the stories were nothing but superstition and fairy tales to frighten children into behaving. Masika shook her head ever so slightly and thought how wrong Basteta was.
