Battle Stage 37: Confrontation! Remembrance of a Devil

The group stood on the duelling deck of the Battle City blimp in shock and fear for the platform was dominated by Marik Ishtar, his mauve cape flapping in the wind. Marik's face warped beyond his skin as he leered down at the assembled group, “Shall we play?” He asked in his usual distorted tones.

“Bastard, you've been behind all of this haven't you?” Jyoonouchi demanded storming forward.

Marik laughed, “As much as I enjoy torturing you I am only an intermediary allowed to return on the promise that if I destroy you I am allowed to keep this body and am given providence over a section of this planet. So, who shall be first?”

A small voice crept in to speak, “I will.” Turning around they found the source of the voice, “Mai… you don't have too.”

Mai straightened up her eyes locked with Marik's, “You're wrong Jyoonouchi, I do, we all have to face our demons sometime, besides, he can't do worse than what he did last time…” She replied failing to keep her voice lever through the conversation. Kaiba did not speak he only took Mai's hand kissing the back of it, all that needed saying was said in that gesture.

Mai clambered onto the platform and took a position opposite to Marik, “Let's go.”

Marik laughed, “Again, very well, but this time the sentence will be death.”

“Fine.” Mai replied unsteadily not daring to look at her friends.

“I draw;

1. I summon Birdface (Wind/Winged Beast/Effect/4 ATK/1600 DEF/1600) in attack mode;

2. I play two cards face down and end my turn.”

Winged Sage Falcos's attack destroyed Grand Tiki Elder; Birdface's attack inflicted 1600 points of direct damage to the opponent.

Archfiend Soldier's attack destroyed Birdface; Birdface's effect activates.

Cyber Harpy's attack destroyed Archfiend Soldier; Winged Sage Falcos's attack inflicted 1900 points of direct damage to the opponent.

Mai laughed, “It seems without your God card you're second rate, I was hoping for more of a challenge, I've never met a man that's disappointed me this much…”

Marik growled clenching his fist, “You'll pay for that slight bitch.”

::Marik::

“I draw;

1. I play Tribute to the Doomed (Spell) by discarding one card from my hand to the graveyard I can destroy your Cyber Harpy;

2. I also play Monster Reborn (Spell) to revive Terrorking Archfiend (Dark/Fiend/Effect/4 ATK/2000 DEF/1600) in attack mode;

3. I summon Darkbishop Archfiend (Dark/Fiend/Effect/3 ATK/300 DEF/1400) in attack mode;

4. Now Checkmate (Spell) by sending Darkbishop Archfiend to the graveyard Terrorking Archfiend can attack directly this turn;

5. Terrorking Archfiend attack!”

Terroking Archfiend's attack inflicted 2000 points of direct damage to the opponent.

4. Harpy's Hunting Ground's second effect activates on Harpy Lady 1 (ATK/1500 DEF/1600);

5. Harpy Lady 1 (ATK/1800);

6. Winged Sage Falcos (ATK/2200);

7. Winged Sage Falcos attack;

8. Harpy Lady 1 attack!”

“I activate Hallowed Life Barrier (Trap) I discard one card from my hand to reduce battle damage taken this turn to zero.”

Winged Sage Falcos's attack destroyed Terrorking Archfiend; Harpy Lady 1's attack inflicted 0 points of direct damage to the opponent.

::Marik::

“I draw;

1. I play two cards face down;

2. I end my turn.”

::Mai::

“I draw;

1. You've made a bad decision, Harpy Lady 1 attack;

2. Winged Sage Falcos attack!”

“You underestimate me my dear, Metal Reflect Slime (Continuous/Trap) when it's activated this card becomes a Trap Monster (Water/Aqua/10 ATK/0 DEF/3000) in defence mode.”

“Damn it!”

Winged Sage Falcos's and Harpy Lady 1's attacks failed.

::Marik::

“I draw;

1. Now to seal this strategy Ring of Magnetism (Spell) prevents you from attack a card other than Metal Reflect Slime;

2. I summon Granadora (Water/Reptile/Effect/4 ATK/1900 DEF/700) in attack mode;

3. Granadora's effect increases my life points one thousand when it's summoned (LP: 5400);

Granadora attack!”

Granadora's attack destroyed Harpy Lady 1; Winged Sage Falcos (ATK/1900).

Mai Kujyaku LP: 3600

::Mai::

“I draw;

1. I play three cards face down;

2. I switch Winged Sage Falcos to defence mode;

3. And summon Amazoness Fighter (Earth/Warrior/Effect/4 ATK/1300 DEF/1300) in defence mode;

4. I'm done.”

Marik laughed, “You've chosen to give up and accept your fate like a good girl, excellent, I might not kill you after all, you may have… other uses.” Marik spouted lecherously, Mai shivered but said nothing.

“Hey, you keep your hands off her you dirty prick.” Jou yelled clenching his fists.

Marik glared down at him, “Silence, I'll get to you soon enough and your fate will be death that is certain.”

Jou growled and relented, “Jerk.”

::Marik::

“I draw;

1. Granadora attack!”

Granadora's attack destroyed Amazoness Fighter.

“Hey, why didn't your life points drop.” Marik demanded.

Mai smiled her eyes hidden behind her bangs, “Amazoness Fighter's special ability reduces life point damage to zero when Amazoness Fighter is destroyed.”

“You won't be so lucky next turn.”

::Mai::

“We'll see, I draw;

1. I summon Harpy Lady 3 (Wind/Winged Beast/4 ATK/1300 DEF/1400) in defence mode;

2. Harpy's Hunting Ground activates destroying Ring of Magnetism;

3. Harpy's Hunting Ground's second ability activates (ATK/1500 DEF/1600);

4. I end my turn.”

“Ha, you think that makes a difference, you still can't pass my monsters.” Marik commented smirking, silence was his only reply.

::Marik::

“I draw;

1. Granadora dispose of that.”

Granadora's attack destroyed Harpy Lady 3; Harpy Lady 3's effect activates.

Kaiba growled, “This can't go on, we have to do something.” He said looking meaningfully at Yuugi.

Yuugi continuing to watch the duel responded, “No we don't, she started it she has to finish it, if she can't I will.”

“Damn it, that's your friend up there don't you care?” Jyoonouchi yelled.

“No, not anymore, I only have hate now.” Yuugi whispered clenching his fists.

::Mai::

“I draw;

1. I summon Birdface (Wind/Winged Beast/Effect/4 ATK/1600 DEF/1600) in defence mode;

2. Harpy's Hunting Ground's second ability activates (ATK/1800 DEF/1800);

3. I end my turn.”

::Marik::

Marik sneered, “That won't save you, I draw;

1. I play one card face down;

2. Granadora attack!”

Marik waited, seconds passed. The wind swept the deck rustling Marik's cape and Mai's jacket and skirt, allowing her friends a glimpse of her shaply thighs, but Marik's monster remained unmoved “What's going on attack, I gave an order and you're programmed to obey, so ATTACK!”

Kaiba laughed, “Wake up, you destroyed Harpy Lady 3, it has a special ability.”

“Which is?”

“Any monster attacking it can't attack for the next two turns.” Mai finished smiling under her bangs.

Marik growled, “You knew.”

“Well duh, I know how to use my deck strategically stupid.” Mai jabbed.

Marik's face contorted fiendishly emphasised by his face distorting beyond its skin once again the viens in his forehead pulsing, “You must enjoy suffering beacues you're asking for it the way you speak to me. One more slight and I won't wait to pass judgement on you.” Marik threatened raising his hand like a claw. Mai stared him in the eyes her body rigid her jaw clenched as she spoke, “Let's just finish this then you can do whatever you want to me.”

Marik dropped his arm, “Fine, for now.”

::Mai::

“I draw;

1. I activate God Bird Attack (Trap) by sending Birdface to the graveyard I can destroy two cards on the field;

2. One is my Shadow of Eyes (Continuous/Trap) trap card;

3. The other is your Metal Reflect Slime…”

“No it isn't, I activate Shift (Trap) which switches the target of your card effect to Granadora.” Marik remarked smugly.

“But that reduces your life points two thousand per card effect.” Mai replied smirking watching Marik's face drop with his life points (LP: 3400).

4. “Now I play one card face down;

5. And play Premature Burial (Equip/Spell) sacrificing eight hundred life points to return Birdface (Wind/Winged Beast/Effect/4 ATK/1600 DEF/1600) in attack mode;

6. Harpy's Hunting Ground's second effect activates (ATK/1800 DEF/1800);

7. This allows me to activate Life Absorbing Machine (Continuous/Trap) this I'll get to later;

8. For now I'll end my turn.”

::Marik::

“Time for me to get serious, I draw;

1. I play Curse of the Masked Beast (Ritual/Spell);

2. And send Despair from the Dark (Dark/Fiend/Effect/8 2800 DEF/3200) from my hand;

3. To summon Masked Beast (Dark/Fiend/Ritual/8 ATK/3200 DEF/1800) in attack mode;

4. You won't last against my beast, attack!”

Mai smirked, “I disagree.” She responded her eyes alight with passion, “I activate Mirror Wall (Continuous/Trap) which halves the attack of your monster (ATK/1600).”

“What!”

Masked Beast's attack failed; Masked Beast is destroyed.

Marik Ishtar LP: 3200

Mai Kujyaku LP: 2800

“You're toast Marik.” Jou gloated.

“Really, as long as I have Metal Reflect Slime she's stuck while I can re-build with impunity, so I am not, toast.”

::Mai::

“Mai grinned, “I draw;

1. During my Standby Phase Life Absorbing Machine's effect activates restoring eight hundred life points I lost last turn (LP: 3600);

2. But Mirror Wall also activates depriving me of two thousand life points for the pleasure of keeping it on the field (LP: 1600);

3. You think you're safe behind your Metal Reflect Slime don't you, you're wrong Marik because not only is it a monster it's also a Trap and I'm about to be rid of this Trap once and for all, I activate Hysteric Party (Continuous/Trap);

4. By discarding a card from my hand I can summon every Harpy you've destroyed from my graveyard;

5. Cyber Harpy (ATK/2000 DEF/1500) in attack mode;

6. This activates Harpy's Hunting Ground's ability destroying Metal Reflect Slime;

7. Harpy Lady 3 (ATK/1500 DEF/1600) in attack mode;

8. This activates Harpy's Hunting Ground's special ability again destroying your last face down card;

9. Harpy Lady 1's (ATK/1500 DEF/1600) special ability increases the attack of all Wind monsters on the field three hundred points (ATK/1800);

10. Harpy Lady 3 (ATK/1800);

11. Cyber Harpy (ATK/2300);

12. Birdface (ATK/2100);

13. Cyber Harpy, Birdface attack!”

Cyber Harpy and Birdface's attacks inflicted 4400 points of direct damage to the opponent.

Mai Kujyaku LP: 1600

Marik Ishtar LP: 0

Mai's stunned friends watched as the Harpy and Birdface attacks enveloped Marik in a cloud of smoke. Mai grinned almost laughing in surprise as Marik's life points dropped to zero.

Marik emerged from the smoke seething with rage, “No, I can not be defeated by the likes of you… Penal…”

Marik's ran was cut off suddenly by the echoing ring of gunshots hitting him in the hand, shoulder and head sending Marik stumbling over the railing to the floor below. Mai lowered her hands from her face to see the smouldering barrel of Yuugi's pilfered gun aimed at the spot where Marik had been standing moments before, “Not again, we've lost to much already.” He stated lowering the gun.

“Damn it Yuugi…” Mai muttered running to the railing expecting to see Marik lying below in a pool of blood, but below her as the other made it to the end of the platform was a small puddle of blood, Marik was gone.

“What happened, where's…” Serenity began to ask but stopped mid-sentence, distracted by a wall of cloud speeding towards them from the opposite direction, she tried to yell a warning as they hit the wall.
