Falling For The Enemy

Reality

Beep.

Silky black locks spread over white cotton.

Beep.

The bundle of blankets rolled over, then lay still.

BEEP!

"AKIMA! GET YOUR LAZY ASS OUT OF BED, NOW!"

Akima sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes before slamming her fist down on the annoying alarm clock. "Yeah, yeah, I'm up!" she called. "Jackass..." She swung her feet over the side of the bed and stood up in one fluid motion. She looked over at the clock.

"SHIT! I'm gonna be late!" she exclaimed as she grabbed school uniform, a towel, and rushed into the bathroom. She showered quickly, dressed, then raced down the stairs.

"Morning Dad." she said as she poured herself a glass of orange juice.

"It's about damn time you got out here. I swear, you're useless. All you do is waste my hard-earned money on food, clothes, and phonecalls to those dumb friends of yours."

"Gee, I love you too, Dad." she muttered.

"Don't you take that tone with me, you little wench!" her father hissed, slamming his palm down on the kitchen table, causing Akima to jump.

"Whatever..." Akima said before hurrying out of the house.

"Hey, I'm talking to you! Get back here!" her father yelled, coming out after her.

Akima broke into a dead run, not stopping or looking back until she reached the confines of Domino High. She fell against one of the walls and slid to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest and burying her face in her arms, the tears falling freely.

"A-Akima?"

Akima quickly wiped away the tears and looked up... right into a pair of chocolate-brown orbs. "R-Ryou?"

"Are you alright?" Ryou asked, kneeling down next to Akima.

Akima sniffed. "Yeah, I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" Ryou asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Akima half-smiled and sniffed. "Yes. I'm sure."

"Okay..." Ryou said as he stood, then offered her a hand. "We should get to class before we're late."

"Yeah..." Akima agreed, taking his hand and standing up. "Let's go."

*************************************************************** ********

At lunch, Akima slipped stealthily through the crowd and to the stairs. She was determined to find some time to herself. She followed the stairs up tp the roof, where she stepped out into the sunshine. "Ah, finally. Fresh air." Just as she started to pull out her lunch, she heard an all-too-familiar voice.

"Well, well, look who's here."

Akima looked up, only to see Bakura sitting above the door to the stairs, staring down at her. "Oh God.... Anybody but him." Akima moaned.

"Don't be so happy to see me."

"Fuck you." Akima snapped.

"I bet you would." Bakura smirked.

"Ugh, just go away!"

"Why should I go away? I was here first." Bakura said pointedly.

"I don't care. Leave me alone."

"What crawled up your ass and died?" Bakura asked, jumping down next to her.

"Since when do you care?"

"Hn. I don't." he said before leaving through the door to the stairs.

"Bastard." she huffed.

The door suddenly opened again and Bakura popped his head out. "I heard that."

*************************************************************** ********

Akima unlocked the door and walked into her empty home. "I see Dad's gone drinking again.... how wonderful." She dropped her bag on the kitchen counter and opened the fridge. She rumaged through the contents until she found what she was looking for: leftover ramen. She warmed it up in the microwave then took it and her homework up to her bedroom.

"Nothing like two-day old ramen and algebra to help you relax." she mumbled as she flopped down on her bed. She opened her text book and looked down at the first equation, taking a bite of her ramen. "Let's see... |2x| 3y + 9...."

Two hours, one ramen bowl, and thirty-five equations later, Akima heard the front dore slam open. 'Oh no....'

"Oi! Where are ya, ya li'l whore!" a slurred voice bellowed through the house.

"Oh God.... he's drunk." Akima started to panic. She quickly ran to the door and locked it, placing her desk chair in front of it.

"Hey!" Heavy pounding on her bedroom door startled her. "Open up, damnit!"

Akima opened her window and stuck one leg out.

"Open the fucking door or I'll break it down!"

Akima slid out ont the roof, then jumped down onto the front lawn. She heard a loud crash from inside and looked up to see her father stick his head out her bedroom window.

"GET BACK HERE!"

For the second time that day, Akima turned and ran. This time, she had no certain destination in mind. She just had to get as far away as she could.
