Falling Without Wings
-- One --
“Alright, are you sure you know what you're doing?”
The young angel nodded his head, a smile appearing on his handsome face. “Shizuka, you worry too much,” he answered.
The auburn-haired angel, who used to be human up until about four years ago, walked slowly over and rested an arm on his shoulder. “Yami...of course I worry too much about you...” Her eyes softened as she looked up at the much older angel. “When I...when I died four years ago, you were the one who comforted me. You made me feel at home here in heaven. And-and I consider you to be a closer friend to me than the ones I had when I was alive. You're more than just a friend to me Yami, you're like a brother,” she whispered, resting her cheek on his shoulder.
“Promise me,” she began quietly, keeping her eyes on him. “Promise me that you will come back....Because if you don't, I know I'll be all alone again. And I don't want to feel alone ever again.”
Yami turned slightly and pulled the adolescent girl into a warm embrace. “Don't worry,” he said, running a hand through her long hair. “I won't leave you.”
After placing a soft kiss on her cheek, he pulled away and walked to the Gates. The angel Gabriel was waiting to escort him to earth. Despite being disappointed about leaving Shizuka and the other friends he had in Heaven, Yami couldn't help the excitement that bubbled up inside of him. He was going to go to earth again! He was going to actually be amongst the humans, live as a human! He was going to live again.
OOOOOOOO
“Yugi,” a feminine voice called. “Yugi, are you over here?”
The petite teen glanced up, his large, violet eyes landing on his brunette friend. He looked back down to the floor when she began to make her way over to him.
“Yugi,” the brown-haired girl whispered, sitting down next to him. “Yugi, why are you hiding over here? I was worried when you never showed up outside after last period let out. I was so scared that Ushio and his stupid gang had gotten to you again.”
“I was just here thinking, Anzu,” Yugi replied, shying away when she tried to put an arm around him. “I...I just want to be left alone for a little bit.”
Anzu sighed and leaned her head back to rest against the cold stone wall of the deserted classroom. “You know...we all are sorry about your grandfather's death. He should have gone so soon, it was too unexpected. It just wasn't fair to any of us...especially not to you.” She placed a hand on his shoulder, smiling when he didn't move away this time. “Even though your grandfather is gone, I know he's looking down on you from above. And I'm sure he's unhappy that you're isolating yourself like this.”
“I didn't mean to,” the tri-haired boy exclaimed. “I just...miss him.”
“I know, Yugi. We all do. But you have to let it go. You have to realize that he's still there in your heart, and you have to keep on living your life. You can't just isolate yourself from your friends and other people who care about you.”
“I know,” Yugi said. “I know.”
Standing up, the teenagers made their way to the doors.
“I have an idea,” the brunette said. “How about I treat you to ice cream!”
The shorter grinned and raised a hand to his chin in thought. “Nah, I'm in the mood for hamburgers!” he replied, letting out a small giggle.
Anzu laughed and nodded. “Alright then. Hamburgers it is.”
As the two best friends made their way out of the school, they were stopped by the school's vice principal. Eyes widening, they both bowed in respect.
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Juri.”
The elderly woman smiled softly at the young student and then took his arm. “Mr. Muto, please come with me.”
Yugi blinked, looking confused. Shrugging his shoulders, he had no other choice but to follow the vice principal into the main school office. Anzu patiently decided to wait for her small friend by the school gates. Yugi continued along to Mrs. Juri's office. When the door opened, his eyes were met with a truly magnificent sight.
A young man, appearing no older than twenty, sat in one of the chairs next to the desk. As the vice principal and student entered the room, he quickly stood up and bowed his head. Then he introduced himself.
“You must be Yugi,” he began, smiling while extending his right hand to the boy. “My name is Yami Mutou, and from now on, you're going to be living with me.”
Yugi blinked several times, and then took Yami's hand to shake it. His cheeks flushed pink after getting a closer look at him. Yami was really...really handsome. His hair was long, and strangely the same colors of his own. At the moment, it was spiked up in a similar fashion as Yugi's own. The other also had beautiful sun-kissed and exquisite crimson eyes which gave him a regal and dangerous appearance. Yet at the same time he looked so gentle, that Yugi believed he could be an angel if he only had wings. He suddenly snapped back to his senses. “E-excuse me?” he asked.
Yami chuckled, fully expecting that sort of response. “You're going to be living with me. I'm your new guardian.”
The teenage boy took a step back, trying quickly to register this information. A guardian...? Why did he need a guardian?! He was seventeen; he'd be eighteen next year! Why couldn't he live on his own? Why did someone have to move in with him? “I...What if I don't want you to live with me?” he asked.
The tall man gave him a sympathetic smile. “I'd understand completely. But I've been appointed by the government to act as a guardian to you until you've reached the legal age of eighteen. I'm sorry Yugi, but this was all planned out when your grandfather fell ill. I know it's going to be uncomfortable, but unless you want to be sent to an orphanage, you're going to have to move in with me.”
“A...an orphanage..? That's my only other option?” Yugi began to panic. Wrapping his arms around himself, he shook his head. “But I don't want to live with you. I mean, I'm sure you're really nice and I'm grateful for the offer...but what will happen to the game shop? If I'm not there...if I'm living with you, who will take care of it? It will have to be put out of business.” The boy sniffled. “That's the only reminder I have of my grandpa! I don't want to move out!”
Yami knelt down before the tri-haired teen. “I really am sorry, Yugi...but you don't really have a choice in the matter. You're going to either live with me or with a whole bunch of kids at the orphanage in Tokyo. Either way, you won't be able to live in the game shop anymore.”
Mrs. Juri cleared her throat, capturing Yugi's attention. “You're going to have to move out by the end of the week, Mr. Muto. After that, the game shop will be put up for sale.”
“Sale? B-but why?!”
“There is no one in your family who has the legal right to run the Kame Game Shop. Your grandfather didn't put it in his will for you to inherit it, so it has to be put on the market. I'm very sorry. I know the home is very dear to you, since you grew up there.”
Tears began to well up in Yugi's amethyst orbs. “This isn't fair! This just isn't fair! I've lost my grandfather already, and now to stupid government is going to take away the one thing I had left of him and make me live with someone I don't even know?!”
“No one said life is fair, Yugi,” Yami said, placing a hand on the boy's shoulders. “Things could always be worse. It could be you who died, you know.”
Yugi pulled himself away from the crimson-eyed man, raising a hand to dry his tears. “Right now, I wish I were dead!” he yelled before turning and running from the office.
Mrs. Juri sighed loudly, walking out from behind her desk. She bowed in apology to Mr. Mutou. “I really am sorry, sir. He is usually such a kind-hearted boy. I don't know what's come over him.”
Yami smiled. “It's quite all right. I didn't expect him to be happy about any of this.” He walked over to the door. “Perhaps it would be best if I went and found him. Thank you for all your help, Mrs. Juri.” He nodded to the vice principal and then left the office.
OOOOOO
After almost a full hour of talking, yelling, crying and negotiating, Yami was able to finally get Yugi to agree to move in wit him. He had let the younger boy run off to tell his friends that he wouldn't be able to spend the afternoon with them. Yami had allowed him to go tell them alone, deciding to wait for the boy in the guest parking lot.
After a few minutes the seventeen-year-old made his way through the guest parking lot, his head lowered sadly so that his chin touched his chest. He stopped when his eyes spotted a pair of black leather boots on his left. Raising his head slightly, he saw Yami waiting patiently for him next to an electric blue corvette.
The boy's newly appointed guardian gave him a grin, walking over to the passenger side of the car and opening the door. “After you,” he said, giving a mock-bow.
Yugi managed to giggle at this and climbed into the seat. He had to admit that Yami's car was extremely nice. An electric blue corvette had always been his ideal fantasy car. Only his fantasy corvette was a convertible, and this one wasn't. Not that it really mattered.
After buckling his seatbelt, the tri-haired teen made himself comfortable in the car. Then he settled for staring sadly out the window, watching the other cars in the parking lot disappear behind him as Yami's car pulled out of the school.
Yami leaned back in his seat, his long legs stretched out beneath him, tapping the gas and acceleration petals whenever needed. After a few moments of silence, he took one of his hands off the steering wheel and flipped the radio on. “What kinds of music do you like to listen to, Yugi?” he questioned, glancing over in the other's direction.
Yugi shrugged his shoulders. “It doesn't really matter. You can pick whatever you want.”
The crimson-eyed man smiled. He looked the boy over slightly and then nodded to himself. “Gathering from what I know of you, and by your appearance, I can tell that you are the kind of guy who likes dance music, but hates rap and most hip-hop. Am I right?” He didn't receive an answer, but he knew he was correct. “And I can also tell that you are a rather big fan of rock -but not the heavy stuff. You're more of an alternative-rock type of fellow. So...I have just the CD for you...”
Grinning, he waited until they reached a red light. Then he pulled out a CD case and popped the CD into the player. After pressing the play button and turning up the volume of the car's stereo, music began to fill both men's ears.
“If I could find you now things would get better!
We could leave this town and run forever!
I know somewhere somehow we'll be together!
Let your waves crash down on me and take me awa-e-a-e-ay!”
Yugi's eyes widened in surprise. He looked over at Yami, confusion written all over his face. “H-how...how did you know this was my favorite band? You haven't even known me for more than an hour.”
Yami winked. “I just know these things. Besides, Yellowcard happens to be one of my favorite bands too.” He smiled, turning his attention back to the road. “I didn't think you'd be that different from me. After all, we're only three years apart.”
“Y-you're only twenty?!” Yugi asked; disbelief evident in his voice.
The taller nodded in affirmation. “Yep...well, I'll be twenty-one next month, but right now I'm still twenty.”
Yugi placed a hand behind his head, feeling more at ease in his new guardian's presence. “I can't believe you're so young. I thought you'd be twenty-four at the youngest, since you're my `legalized guardian' and all. I guess I was very wrong.”
Yami chuckled. “Yes, but you weren't too far off.” He turned the steering wheel to the right, moving the car down another street. “We'll be home soon, Yugi. After I show you my place, I'll take you back to the game shop so you can gather your belongings.”
The teenage boy, who was beginning to forget, was harshly reminded of his grandfather's death and how he could no longer live in his own home ever again. He nodded solemnly, lowering his eyes and placing his hands uncomfortably in his lap. “O-okay...” he whispered, his voice shaking slightly as he swallowed the lump in his throat.
The rest of the ride was silent. The corvette pulled into a gated community, Gulfshore Estates, where the family-sized homes where located. Houses of different shapes and sizes passed by, and Yami drove the car down to the very end of the road, turning right once they reached the fork in the road.
Yugi was slightly happy to find that Yami's house was located on the beach. He had always loved the water, and to be able to live so close to it...that was just way too much to ask for. Yami's actual house was nice too. It was a two-leveled house, painted a light yellow color with a light green roof. The double doors were made out of a dark wood and carved with rich designs.
Yami got out of the car and once more opened the door for the younger boy. He grabbed Yugi's backpack and slung it over his shoulder, leading the younger up the cobblestone pathway to the front door.
“I have a set of keys for you inside, Yugi. That way you can go out with your friends without having to worry about me not being here if you ever come home from going out with your friends or something like that,” the guardian explained, opening the front door. “So, welcome to your new home. I really do hope you like it. I've spent the past few weeks remodeling it so it will be a suitable home for two people.”
Yugi shook his head. “It...It's beautiful!” he exclaimed, taking a step further inside and looking around.
The first story of the house was very wide and open, painted light yellow just like the outside of the house. To the right of the wide foyer was the dining room; complete with a large wood table and six seats surrounding it. To the left of the foyer was a spacious office, painted dark forest green, which included two desks (only one with a computer) and two plush leather chairs. On the wall was a small television.
Yami placed Yugi's backpack down by the door and motioned for him to follow. “I'll give you the rest of the tour,” he said with a small grin. “This is a sitting area, where you can view the spa and the great ocean scenery.” He took the boy's hand he led him to the right. “There's nothing to the left but a bathroom and a storage closet,” he explained when the boy questioned.
The twenty-year-old then showed the seventeen-year-old the spacious kitchen and the living room. Yugi loved the plasma-screen TV, as Yami expected he would. Yami then led Yugi up the wooden staircase. The younger giggled, gently running his hands across the smooth, light orange paint of the wall behind the stairs.
“This is your new room,” Yami said, opening the first door of the long hallway.
The room was larger than his old one. It was painted a pretty shade of dark blue. There was a closet in the corner, with a queen-sized blue covered bed next to it. On the opposite side of the room were a dresser and a desk.
“This is awesome!” The teen boy said excitedly. He ran further into his room, forgetting his earlier disappointment. “I...I love it! And I even have a view of the beach!” He grinned. “If this room's so great, I can only imagine what yours looks like!”
Yami let out a small chuckle. “It's not much better than this. Here, I'll show you it. It's right down the hall.” He walked out the door, letting the other one follow, and led him down the short hallway past an upstairs living room and into his room. “See? Not much of a difference. Only I have a balcony.”
“-And a king-sized bed!” Yugi interrupted; running and jumping onto the large four-post bed. He laughed, burying his face in the caramel-colored comforter. When feeling the mattress shift with the weight of another person, he suddenly blushed and sat up. “I-I'm sorry...I shouldn't have just jumped on your bed like that. It was a little rude of me.”
The twenty-year-old shook his head. “It's nothing you should apologize about.” He grinned. “Besides, you were smiling and laughing, and that was nice. Here I was thinking I might have to physically injure myself to get you to laugh.” Looking at his watch, he stood up from the bed. “We should go and get your things now. Then once we get home you can do some homework and maybe begin to unpack. I'll help you too, if you want, that is.”
Yugi nodded and slowly slid off the bed. “All right. Let's go then.” He walked sadly out of the room, his head lowered and his hands stuffed in his pockets; depression winning him over once again.
Yami sighed as he watched the boy. He really did hate to see Yugi upset. Sure, he had just met him, but the angel was already starting to feel attached to the human boy. Yugi was so cute and innocent, and to see him so miserable made Yami's heart sink. He wanted to make the boy happy...it was his job, after all, to help Yugi move on with his life and live normally again. But the angel couldn't help but think that with Yugi switching moods so often, that might be difficult.
