Falling Without Wings

--Chapter Two--

“Yugi, you better hurry up or else you'll be late.”

Yami sat at the kitchen table, flipping through the morning newspaper. It had only been two days, but he was already perfectly adjusted to life on Earth. Though he still longed for the companionship of his fellow Angels, he was still happy to experience life on his own once more. Living again was a wonderful feeling, and thanks to the amount of time he had spent surveying present-day humans and how they lived, he was able to blend in quite nicely.

Gabriel and the other Head Angels had taken the liberty of giving Yami all the things he would need on Earth. There was a house (already furnished and stalked with food) picked out for him and he was even given a car, despite the fact that he much preferred walking.

Yami felt very fortunate indeed, and he was so amazed at the technology of this year that he was now living in. Back when he had been alive, the means of transportation was either a horse or one's own two feet. There was no electrical lighting, and meals were cooked over an open fire. Things were advanced in this time, and the Angel had to admit that, even though he liked the changes, he couldn't help but wish for a simpler lifestyle again.

Glancing over to the staircase, he called out to the teenager again. “Yugi, it's almost seven.” Taking one last sip of his coffee, he finished off the drink and placed the mug back down on the table. Then he stood and headed towards the stairs.

“I'm coming!”

Yami went back to the table to bring his mug to the sink. After a few moments, the tri-haired teen he was sent to guard came hopping down the stairs.

“Good morning, Yami,” he greeted; walking into the kitchen dressed all nicely in his school uniform.

“Good morning,” said Yami with a smile. He rinsed out his coffee cup and dried it. “There are some waffles on the table so you can help yourself,” he explained after putting the cup away in one of the cabinets. “Oh, and I made you a lunch. I don't know if it'll be any good, since I don't normally make lunches, so you can just throw it away if you don't want it.” He pointed to a brown paper bag which was labeled in blue marker with Yugi's name.

Yugi smiled. “I usually buy lunch at school, but I'd still like to have what you've made for me, since you took the time to make it and all. Thanks so much.” He sat down at the table and grabbed a waffle, pouring syrup over it.

“Let me know when you're finished so I can drive you.”

The teenage boy nodded, stuffing a piece of waffle into his mouth.

OOOOO

The electric blue corvette pulled up in front of the high school. Yami smiled at Yugi, who unbuckled his seatbelt and thanked him, with a flushed face, for the ride and for his lunch. Yami shook his head “Don't worry about it, Yugi. I don't mind.”

The tri-haired teen went around and opened the trunk of the car to get out his backpack. He stopped when he heard someone calling his name. “Ah, Anzu. Good morning.”

Anzu flashed a sunny smile. “Good morning to you too.” She looked over the car with wide eyes. “Wow! You never told me your new guardian was rich!”

Yugi blushed. “Well, he's not really rich. He told me that one day he just decided to blow all his savings on a car, and so he bought this. It is really nice though, isn't it?”

The brunette nodded her head. “Is he a nice guy? I mean, you haven't really said much about him. Does he treat you good?”

“Yes...Yami's great. He's really nice and I already feel comfortable living with him.”

“That's good then.”

From inside the car, Yami rolled down the window, about to ask Yugi what time he needed to get picked up after school. He stopped, though, when his eyes landed on the girl standing next to the teen. His crimson eyes widened as he stared, suddenly finding it more difficult to breathe. `It's her...' was the only coherent thought that passed through his mind. `That brown hair...those big, blue eyes...I'd know her anywhere...It's really her...Téa...'

A voice filled his ears, blocking out all other surrounding noises. The voice was feminine; and its tone was delicate and light as it made a seemingly innocent proposal.

“Let's run away together, Yami...”

Yami wiped his forehead with the back of his hand to get rid of the perspiration that was already beginning to form at the mere memory of her. His scarlet orbs narrowed slightly as a handful of questions popped into his head. What was Téa doing here in this time? She was supposed to be dead and in heaven! Why was she still alive?!

“Yami...I'll see you at two-thirty, okay?”

The tri-haired main nodded at Yugi.

Yugi smiled and then linked arms with the brunette girl, walking towards the school's front doors.

Yami watched them, all too aware of the stinging pain in his chest. Switching the car into reverse, he pulled out of his parking spot and took off down the road.

He needed some answers.

OOOOOOO

“If you ever have any questions, you can find Seto. He'll be at Kaiba Corp. during most hours of the day.”

Yami had begrudgingly taken Archangel Gabriel's advice and that was where he now stood, in front of the grand golden gates in front of the enormous skyscraper that was Kaiba Corporations.

Now Yami wasn't all to keen on going to ask Seto for information. The two hadn't exactly been on speaking terms since...well, ever. Seto Kaiba was three years older than the tri-haired angel, and he was also a Guardian Angel. How he managed to get into Heaven in the first place, Yami wasn't all too sure. But Seto really was a Guardian, and one of very high status. He currently watched over a young boy named Mokuba, and had been ever since the boy was born eight years ago. He was also Yami's first cousin, and the cause of his death all those many years ago.

Yami shook his head violently from side to side, not wanting to get into those awful memories now. Buzzing the gate, he waited until it was opened before stepping up to the front doors.

The entryway of Kaiba Corp. was very large, very modern and yet very elegant. It was a long hallway, painted a deep, royal blue color, with silver wall hangings and decorations. The floor was made of finely polished white marble and from the ceiling hung a grad chandelier. At the very end of the hallway was a single desk where the receptionist sat talking on the phone. To the left of the desk was another hallway lined with elevators and ending with a stairwell. To the right of the hallway was a small waiting room with several plush blue couches to sit on. There was soft music playing through the speakers, which were cleverly hidden somewhere within the walls.

With a soft click, the receptionist hung up the phone. She then turned her attention on the man who had just entered. “Welcome to Kaiba Corporations. Are you here for a scheduled appointment?”

Yami blinked and then looked up at the list of names on the wall behind the secretary. There were so many. `Krump Account Management Office...no...Johnson Law Firm Office...no...' He went further down the list in his mind, finally coming to the office number of CEO Seto Kaiba.

“Yes, I'm here to see Mr. Kaiba. I'm afraid I don't have a scheduled appointment...I hope that isn't a problem.”

The secretary nodded her head, taking a slip of paper from a small stack on the desk. “I'm just going to need you sign your name here, and then I can contact Mr. Kaiba to let him know who you are.”

The tri-haired angel nodded and took the offered pen in his left hand, signing his name quickly on the presented paper. “Seto should know me. I'm his cousin.”

The blonde woman took the paper back, the smile never once leaving her face. “Well then, Mr. Mutou, you can just have a seat on the couch and I will call Mr. Kaiba to see if he can see you now. Go ahead and make yourself comfortable.”

Yami nodded and made his way over to one of the blue couches. He sat down, sighing heavily, and waited. His ears could faintly pick up the conversation the secretary was having with the CEO.

“...He says his name is Yami Mutou and that he is a cousin of yours.”

She was silent for a few moments, and then she nodded her head frantically. “I know you're busy, sir...but he must have come on a family matter. I know, Mr. Kaiba...I'm very sorry.” She paused and then nodded again. “Y-Yes sir, I'll send him up now.” She hung up the phone and then turned to the couches. “Mr. Mutou? The Mr. Kaiba will now see you. Take the elevator to the top floor; his will be the only office up there.”

Yami nodded and did as told, going over to the elevators and entering the first one to reach the ground level. He punched the button labeled with the number twenty and leaned against the wall as he moved up the floors. The elevator didn't stop until it reached the twentieth floor, where it dinged and let him out.

The tri-haired man walked down another long hallway, passing another secretary's desk. She told him to go on inside and he did, not even bothering to knock on the office's door.

Seto Kaiba stood staring at the back wall, which was entirely made out of glass so that he could overlook the city of Domino below him. He turned slowly to face the door, his arms folded behind his back. He looked impressive and very business-like in his pure white suit, with his dark brown hair neatly trimmed and combed to the side.

“Well I'll be damned,” he said, a smirk forming on his handsome face. “Yami Mutou...I thought you'd be rotting in the bowels of Hell by now.”

Yami rolled his eyes. “A pleasure to see you again, as always, my dear cousin,” he greeted sarcastically. “I myself am still wondering why Heaven accepted me...and why you were even given a chance at repentance. As far as I've been taught, murderers always burn within Hell's fires. Why is this not the case for you?”

The brown-haired man brought his hands down to his sides and sat down at his desk. “Come, sit.” The other did so and he frowned. “You're still against me because of your death, even though I've told you so many times that what happened was not any fault of mine.”

“Bullshit, Kaiba. You supplied that bastard Otogi with the gun, so you as good as pulled the trigger!” Yami stopped, feeling rage boiling inside of him. “Enough talk of this, for it is not what I've come here to discuss.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the CEO's desk. “Are you aware that Téa has been reincarnated?”

Seto's cobalt eyes widened tremendously. “Téa...Téa Gardner..?” When receiving a nod, he shook his head. “How is that possible? And, above all other things, why?”

“I don't know...but she's here. The boy I was sent to watch over, Yugi, is friends with her. I just saw her this morning, and that's why I came here. I wanted to see if you knew anything about it.”

The CEO lowered his gaze to the floor. “I'm sorry to say that I know as much as you do. I haven't the slightest idea as to why her soul is still on this earth. She should be in Heaven, no doubt she belongs there. Besides the sins she committed in your bed, Téa was a good person...all-too deserving of the title `Angel'.”

Yami stood up from his chair, feeling the pain in his heart returning. “Don't speak to me of our past,” he hissed. “You know nothing of what went on between us.”

“I know all that went on between you, cousin. I was your caretaker, the only person you lived with. You think I didn't know what went on under my own roof? You think I was oblivious to the fact that you snuck out to meet her every night to do God-knows-what, despite the fact that the Gardner's and our family were locked in a heated feud?! I knew what you did with her...it disgusted me.”

The younger of the two cousins scowled. “Do not criticize me, Seto Kaiba. I loved her more than you have ever loved anyone in your entire life, and even now, in our death, I love her still. You who have never loved anyone could never understand how I felt. So don't you criticize me for acting upon my feelings all those years ago.”

Yami walked furiously back over to the door. “If you know nothing of why Téa is here, then I have no reason to be in your traitorous presence.” With that said, he left the office, slamming the door behind him.

Not looking back, he raced towards the elevators. Tears were stinging his eyes, and he let them fall freely down his cheeks.

“Téa...Téa...Why..?”

Deep down, he knew why. It was a test from Heaven. The Archangels were testing him, to see if he would go with his heart again. It was forbidden for an Angel to act upon feelings for a human. So this was a test from God, to see if he was prepared to be a real angel or not. And Yami was afraid of what the results of that test would be.

Would he pass...?

Or would he fail...?
