Falling Without Wings

-Chapter Three-

“Is that your horse?”

Crimson eyes blinked and glanced in the direction of the feminine voice. Their owner grinned upon seeing a pretty brunette girl leaning against the trunk of a large tree. He nodded in response; brushing his hands off on his pants while slowly walking towards her.

“Yes'm, it is.” He moved closer, stopping when he was a mere foot in front of her. “She's pretty, ain't she?”

The girl nodded her head and looked over the horse with shining blue eyes. “You must take good care of her. What's her name?”

Yami ran a hand over the smooth, white hair of the horse. “Delilah,” he answered. He then looked back over to the brunette, his smile growing. “What's your name?”

“Téa,” she said with a small giggle. “And what might yours be?”

“Yami.

Téa walked over and ran her hand over the horse's long mane. “I'd reckon you ain't from around here with a strange name like that.”

Yami chuckled. “You'd win that wager, miss. I came here by boat to live with my cousin. My parents were dirt poor and sent me to start a new life, y'see. So here I am now, livin' with my cousin on his farm. Darn good thing he let me be in charge of the stables, b'cause I'd hate to be working on these here fields in this hot sun all day.”

“Well I sure am glad I met you, Yami. Here I was, thinkin' there were no young people livin' in this little town.” Téa grinned and looked at the young man next to her. “Can I take her for a ride?” she questioned, indicating the horse.

Yami nodded. “Sure. But only if I can ride with you.”

The blue-eyed girl blushed, feeling her heart skip a beat as he stared at her with those intense eyes of his. Giving a slight nod, she allowed him to lift her up onto the horse. Then he got on after her, and never once did she take her eyes off him while they rode.

Yami sighed and rolled onto his back. Placing his hands behind his head, he stared blankly up at the stars. For a moment, he ached to be back in his time with Téa again. Those had been the happiest years of his life...and he hated that their time together had been cut short because of some jealous plantation owner.

The back door of the house opened and a small figure soon stood behind the Guardian Angel. Turning his crimson eyes upward, Yami offered a small smile to Yugi. He raised himself into a sitting position and grabbed the boy's arm, pulling him down to sit across from him.

“What are you doing out here, Yugi?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Yugi blushed and toyed with one of the buttons on his pajama top. “I...I was just worried about you, that's all. You've been out of it ever since you dropped me off at school this morning. And then you came out here tonight and haven't come inside for almost two hours. Is something wrong? Did I do something to upset you?”

Yami shook his head. “No, you didn't do anything. Today's just been an off day for me. I had to meet with my cousin earlier for this first time in quite a few years...and he and I don't really get along very well, so it was a stressful experience for me.”

“Oh, I'm sorry.”

“Nothing you have to go apologizing for, Yugi,” the tri-haired man said. Narrowing his eyes slightly, he debated on asking the teen what he had been longing to ask him since that morning. Finally, he decided there was no harm in it and questioned Yugi about who the brown-haired girl from school was.

Yugi smiled, not bothered at all by the fact that his guardian wanted to know about her. “Her name is Anzu Mazaki,” he explained. “She's been my best friend since we were little kids. I used to have a big crush on her...but not so much anymore,” he added with a blush.

Yami nodded. “What's she like? Is she a nice person?”

The teenager nodded. “Oh yes, she's the nicest person I've ever met. She's very caring towards others. You'd probably get along with her really well, Yami. She's very fun and easy to talk to. She likes dancing and horseback riding.”

The Angel raised an eyebrow. `Dancing and horseback riding..? That does sound like my Téa.' He grinned and listened as Yugi continued to tell him all about his best friend.

“She does sound like a lot of fun,” he said when the boy was finally finished talking. “Does she, by any chance, have a boyfriend..?”

Yugi shook his head. “No...She's never really been interested in dating before. She puts her schoolwork above all other things, because she wants to get into a good school in American to learn dancing, and those schools only accept students with high GPA's.”

Yami nodded, not really knowing what a GPA was. But he guessed it had to do with school and the modern grading systems.

“Why were you asking?”

“No reason. I was just...curious,” Yami said.

Yugi smiled slyly. “Sure....” Turning his head away to look up at the stars, he sighed. “I'm going to go over to Jounouchi's house after school to work on a History project. Do you think you could drive Anzu to her dance class?”

“What do I look like, a chauffer?” The Angel asked teasingly.

The teenaged boy shook his head. “No usually I walk with her there. Since tomorrow I'll be busy, and because Jou's house is nowhere near the dance studio, she'll have to go by herself. And I don't really want her walking alone...it's not safe. Also, you seem like you'd like to be friends with her and this is an excellent opportunity.”

“Okay,” Yami said, taking Yugi's hand with his own. “If it makes you happy, then I'll drive her to dance class.” Letting go, he stood off and brushed away the grass from his jeans. “Lets go inside and have some hot cocoa or something...its chilly tonight, don't you think?” Without waiting for a reply, he went on inside.

Yugi stood behind, his cheeks tinged pink. He placed his now freed hand to his chest and let out a soft sigh, feeling his heart beating rapidly beneath his skin. His eyes suddenly snapped wide open and he jumped. `Wh-what just happened to me?”

OOOOOOO

“So you're sure it's not too much trouble?”

Yami shook his head. “It's no trouble at all. Hop in.”

The brunette blushed and opened the passenger door of the car; sliding in and making herself comfortable in the seat next to him. After putting her seatbelt on, she caught his gaze in the rearview mirror and flashed a smile. “Thanks a lot...you didn't have to go out of your way just to give me a ride to dance class.”

The tri-haired man shrugged. “I told you before that it's not a problem, and I meant it. Besides, you're Yugi's best friend, so you're my friend. And I'll go out of my way to help a friend.”

Anzu turned her face away to hide her reddening cheeks. “Um...thank you.” Leaning back in the chair, she tried desperately to keep her eyes from wandering back to him. “That dance studio should be near your house, from what Yugi tells me. It's on the corner of Pine Crest and Eighteenth Street,” she explained, stretching her hand out to her left to show him the direction.

Yami gently pushed the teen's hand back to her side and out of his face so he could see the road properly. “All right, so it isn't too far away from here. You're welcome to put the radio on if you want to listen to some music.”

The brunette leaned forward and pressed the button for the radio. In a matter of seconds, the latest song by 3 Doors Down was blaring through the speakers. She bobbed her head in tune with the music, tapping her fingers lightly on her leg as she began to mouth the words to the song.

Yami looked over at her through the corner of his eyes, smiling to himself. Anzu was just like how he remembered Téa being. She was so polite, so gracious and gentle...and so...so very beautiful. The Angel forced himself to focus on the road ahead of him, but always caught himself in the act of studying her profile while stopped at a red light.

Anzu didn't seem to notice at all, though. She was too caught up in listening to the music and moving her body in accordance to the rhythm and beats resounding throughout the Corvette. But once or twice during a commercial, she would sneak a peak at the handsome young man escorting her to her dance class.

She couldn't really put her finger on it, but there was just something about him that, even though they had only just met, made her stomach do little flip-flops whenever he'd kindly ask her a question.

When the car finally pulled up in front of the small dance studio fifteen minutes later neither of them moved. Yami was still dwelling on the similarities between the blue-eyed girl and his lost love, and Anzu was trying to figure out why she was blushing so hard just by being in the same car as her best friend's guardian.

After a few moments of absolute silence, save for the radio, Anzu unbuckled her seatbelt. “Thanks for the ride,” she whispered softly as she reached down to grab her backpack.

Yami nodded, feeling as though he should say something more before she left. He wanted to spend some actual time with her, other than just driving her somewhere. He wanted to know if she really was Téa's reincarnation...and if they really were exactly alike. But his mouth had suddenly gone dry, and he couldn't think of anything to say.

“Tell Yugi I said hello, will you?”

Again, the tri-haired man nodded, keeping his crimson eyes fixated on the steering wheel. And when she finally got out of the car and went to close the door, he swiftly leaned over and grabbed her wrist. “Wait.”

Anzu's face flushed and her gaze darted to his hand, which felt warm and smooth against her skin. “Y-yes...?” she asked, wondering why in the world he was holding her back.

Yami gave her a timid smile, embarrassed by his own actions. “Would you...would you like to go get a coffee sometime with me?” he questioned hopefully.

The brunette made a small noise of surprise. Her cheeks heated up and her heart skipped a beat. Inclining her head slightly, she returned the smile with one of her own. “Coffee sounds great. Thank you.” Removing her hand from his grip, she lightly curled her fingers around his for a brief moment pulling away closing the car door behind her.

The Guardian Angel let out a large sigh. The teenage girl had just disappeared past the doors of the dance studio and he was now left alone in his car to ponder on what he had done.

`I just asked her out on a date...I just asked this girl that I barely know to go out with me.' His hands tightened on the steering wheel as he shifted the car into gear and continued down the street to his home.

`I'm such an idiot...I know perfectly well that Heaven is testing me by using her, and still I give in to my desires! I'm going to fail, and it's all because of some stupid coffee date. If Anzu really is my Téa...then there's no way I'll be able to keep myself away from her, and there's especially no way I'll be able to not be intimate around her. Téa was supposed to me my wife back when I was alive...and now that she's reincarnated, I want to continue the relationship that I had with her. But I can't do that or I'll be punished by God and the Archangels who are testing me so unfairly.'

He sighed again. `This just is cruel. I loved Téa with all my heart...and now that she's returned to me, I don't want to lose her again. What am I supposed to do if she feels the same way towards me now?'
