Falling Without Wings

--Chapter Four

Yami stood in front of his bathroom mirror, hastily doing up with buttons of his T-shirt. Anzu was going to arrive in ten minutes, or less if she was anything like Téa who always seemed to come over unfashionably early.

Stepping back slightly after he finished dressing himself, he sighed. `Do I look okay?' he wondered, staring at the outfit he had on. It was simple, consisting of only a pair of dark jeans and a black-and-grey striped T-shirt. `Ugh. Why am I so worried? I never got like this when I was with Téa...but then again, that was a different time. And this isn't Téa, this is her reincarnation. She might be totally different from my love.'

“Hey, Yami.”

The Guardian Angel turned to the door and smiled as he saw Yugi standing there. “Hi, Yugi.” His smile faltered slightly when he saw the frown on the teen's face. “What's wrong?” he asked immediately, going over and kneeling in front of him. “Are you upset? Did I do something?”

Yugi shook his head. “No, that's not it. You didn't do anything wrong...I was just thinking...you know, about you going out with Anzu tonight...”

“Do you...do you not want me to go out with her?”

The short teen shook his head. “No! No, I want you to be happy and if going out with her will make you happy, than it's perfectly fine with me. And anyways, who am I to stop you, right? I mean, you're older than me; you can do whatever you want to do. I don't want to be the one standing in your way of love or anything. I just felt a little uncomfortable, is all. But don't think I'm not okay with it because I totally am! Anzu really seems to like you so there's no reason for you not to go out with her. That would be silly not to act upon your feelings for each other and-”

Yami placed a finger against Yugi's lips to stop him from saying anything more. He then chuckled. “I did not understand a word you just said. Would you mind repeating it slower?”

Yugi flushed and gave a sheepish grin. “I'm sorry for rambling. I was just trying to tell you that it's okay if you want to go out with her. I mean, I'll admit that it's a little weird that my guardian wants to go out with my best friend, but I am okay with it. If-if it's what makes you happy, then I don't want to hold me back.”

The tri-haired Angel ruffled the boy's hair. “Well thank you, Yugi. Despite what you may think, your opinion does matter to me. If you didn't approve of me going out on a date with Anzu, then I wouldn't go out with her. But since you agree, well, it makes me very grateful.”

Yugi's cheeks reddened even more. Yami went over to the counter and grabbed a bottle of his cologne. After spraying it on himself he put it back and turned to the small boy. “So?” he asked aloud, “How do I look?”

The teenager gave a thumbs-up. Just then the doorbell rang. Yami jumped and thanked him again before running down the stairs. Yugi stayed behind and leaned against the doorway. He placed his hands in the pockets of his Kappa pants and sighed. “You always look good, Yami.”

Yugi pulled away from the bathroom door and went downstairs. There he saw his best friend making polite conversation with his guardian. Anzu looked very pretty indeed, a sure sign that she was indeed interested in Yami. She wore a peach sundress that accentuated the creaminess of her fair skin, white sandals, and a white scarf around her neck. She had quite a lot of makeup on, too. Well, more than what he normally saw on her.

Yami was slightly flushed. He looked down at himself, wondering what she thought of his attire. But then he decided that it really shouldn't matter. “Did you find the place okay?” he asked lamely, not really sure on what he should be saying. How did normal men start off a date in the present time period? He wasn't really sure....

Anzu giggled and tucked a strand of chocolate brown hair behind her ears. “Yeah, the directions were really specific.”

“Well I didn't want you getting lost or anything.”

“Domino is a fairly small city, so I doubt I would have.”

Yami nodded. “Right.” He looked down at his watch and his eyes widened. “Crap, we're going to be late for our reservations if we don't hurry. Yugi,” he turned to the boy and smiled. “You said Jounouchi and Honda were going to come over, right?”

Yugi nodded dully. “That's okay, right?”

“Yes, of course it is. Just, you know, don't wreck my house or anything.” The tri-haired Angel grinned jokingly and ruffled the boy's hair, not noticing the fierce blush that spread across Yugi's cheeks when he did so.

“H-have a good time,” Yugi stuttered, watching as Yami grabbed his coat from the closet next to the door and placed an arm casually around Anzu's shoulder to lead her outside. “Bye...”

“Bye, Yugi,” Both Yami and Anzu said in unison.

The brunette then turned to the tall young man with a surprised look. “Hey, I thought you said we were going to go to a café?”

“I did,” Yami whispered as a reply. “Boardwalk Café.”

Anzu gasped. “You're kidding?! That's one of the fanciest restaurants in town!”

And then the door was shut, and the rest of the conversation was blocked off. Yugi sighed and took a seat on the bottom stair back inside. He wished...he wished he could go along with them.

OOOOOOO

“Oh, Yami, I really wish you'd let me pay you back. At least for my portion of the meal.”

Yami shook his head. “What kind of gentleman would I be if I let you pay for your own meal?”

“But-but,” Anzu sighed, “the Boardwalk Café is so expensive! I know our dinner cost over one hundred dollars, I saw the receipt you stuck it your pocket.”

Again, the young man just shook his head. “Well even if that's true, I'm not accepting your money. I asked you out on this date knowing fully well it was going to be pricey. It's okay. You don't have to feel guilty or anything. I wanted to pay. That's what a good man does when he takes a pretty girl out for dinner.”

Anzu blushed and hid her face in her hands. She turned away from her date and giggled. “You sure do know what to say to make me blush.”

“Well I'd say more just to see your face heat up like that, but I take it I'm embarrassing so I won't.”

The brunette's cheeks reddened even more. She leaned against Yami and smiled. “Well, it's okay. It's really nice to hear stuff like that sometimes. That I'm pretty. I don't really get it a lot from guys that I like...”

Yami looked at her disbelievingly. “Other guys don't tell you you're pretty?” When receiving a no, he frowned. “Well then they have a problem with their eyes. You're very cute, Anzu. And tonight you like you could be a model.”

Anzu started laughing. Resting her head on Yami's shoulder, she gasped softly when she felt him put an arm around her waist. Yami looked down at her warmly and they continued to walk slowly together down the practically deserted street.

It was so peaceful...just the two of them strolling down Sakura Avenue the way they were. The Guardian Angel couldn't feel more at ease. Their date had gone so well, and there were still so many things he hoped to do with her before their time together was over.

He wanted to kiss her when their date ended. That's what he had seen other men do when with their girlfriends. But as much as he would love to kiss Anzu, he knew he couldn't. If the Archangels ever found out...it would be horrible. He'd be stripped of his wings and sent to wander in purgatory for the remainder of his afterlife as an outcast. No one would be allowed to talk to him, and he'd be totally and completely alone.

It was a fate Yami would rather die a thousand more deaths than receive. And if he acted upon his heart's desire, than surely that would be the punishment bestowed upon him.

“Yami? Are you all right?”

Yami blinked and looked down at her. “I...I'm fine. I was just thinking, is all.”

“Oh. Okay.”

They strode in silence, each enjoying the other's presence. It was a company they wouldn't trade for anything at the moment. They both felt so comfortable with each other. Anzu felt as though she had known Yami for years, and that leaning on him and wrapping her arms around him tightly was the only natural thing for her to do.

They came to a halt once they reached Yami's car. He sighed, not wanting their evening to end so soon. But he really didn't have much of a choice. Anzu had said her curfew was at eleven. And he needed to get home to Yugi.

Anzu pulled away from Yami's warm embrace with a sigh. “I guess I should be heading home, huh?” she said, her eyes falling to the floor.

The Angel smiled and nodded, opening the passenger door for her and letting her slide in. He closed the door and then got in on his side of the car. After buckling up and starting the engine, he sped off.

“So, where is your house?”

“It's not too far away from Yugi's old house,” she explained. “Actually, it's on the same block. Just seven houses down.”

Yami nodded and made a U-turn. Glancing over at Anzu he pursed his lips. “I...I hope you had a good time,” he whispered.

Anzu nodded her head and turned to face him. “I did. I had a wonderful time. The food was so delicious and...” she blushed darkly. “And I really like you. You're...you're very different from the other guys I've dated. You just seem to know and understand me better. It almost feels as though we've known each other for the longest time.”

The tri-haired man grinned. `If only she knew.'

The car turned into Anzu's street, slowing down as they reached her house.

“I had a good time too,” Yami said as he got out of the car to help Anzu out. He took her hand and led her to the front porch. Noticing the lights on, he figured her parents were probably up and awaiting her return.

They didn't say anything for a moment, only stared deeply into the other's eyes. They both smiled, and in unison, exclaimed: “Maybe we should do it again sometime.”

Then they both laughed. Anzu giggled and stepped closer to him, placing her hand on his arm gently. Yami looked down at her and then took her hand in his own, interlacing their fingers. Then he took a cautious step forward, wondering if he should do what he wanted to or not.

Anzu seemed to answer the question for him as she raised herself on her tiptoes, tilted her head and brushed their lips gently together. They both sucked their breaths in, and closed their eyes. To both of them, it felt like something they had never before experienced. Like a breath of fresh air filling their lungs. And they each wanted more. But before Yami could get the chance to deepen the kiss, the front door slammed open.

“Hey, buddy! What do you think you're doin' with my daughter?!”

Yami pulled away quickly, his crimson eyes wide with surprise. The man standing in the doorway looked to be twice his size, and mostly made of muscle.

Anzu rolled her eyes. “Oh, daddy, stop it! I'm seventeen, not seven!”

Mr. Mazaki just growled. “Still, that boy has no right to go just kissing you whenever he feels like it. Especially on your first date with him.”

The color drained from Yami's face and he looked away, feeling absolutely mortified. The brunette just sighed at her father and told him to mind his own business. Then she walked over to her date.

“I'm sorry about my dad. He's, er, really protective of me.”

“I noticed,” The Angel replied dryly.

Anzu blushed. “I'm really sorry, though. If I had known he would be spying on us I wouldn't have let the kiss happen. I'm sorry. I really am.”

Yami chuckled. “It's all right. No harm done...well, except that your dad probably wants to slaughter me. But other than that...” he grinned and shook his head. “It doesn't matter. I...I do hope I get to see you again sometime.”

The brunette nodded. “Me too.”

The crimson-eyed man said a sheepish goodbye to Anzu and then nodded to Mr. Mazaki, who was still glaring at him from the front porch. Then he hopped into his car and drove off. In his rearview mirror, he caught Anzu waving to him on her driveway.

OOOOOOO

Yugi sighed. Currently, he was laying upside-down on the living room couch and watching an old rerun of Punk'd. Jounouchi and Honda were each sprawled out on the floor beneath the couch, snoring away. This left the small teen by himself to ponder on his feelings towards his new guardian.

He had to say, Yami made him feel weird. There was just something about the tri-haired man that wasn't normal. And in a way, it was a good thing. It made him feel oddly attracted to him, which was strange. He had never felt attracted to someone of the same gender before.

And that just made him embarrassed. And he could never tell anyone about it. Jou and Honda would laugh at him, and Yami wouldn't understand. Yami certainly seemed to like people of the opposite gender, anyways. He was out with Anzu right now.

`Anzu's so lucky,' He thought. And idly, he wondered what they were doing. If they were at the movies; sitting in the back corner and making out. Or if they were taking a romantic stroll around the park, near the creek.

Groaning, he turned on to his stomach. He felt so jealous of his best friend. And he hated feeling that way. He wanted Anzu to be happy. Yet at the same time, he wanted to trade places with her. It wasn't normal.

The door to the house opened and Yugi heard Yami walking inside. He questioned to himself whether his guardian was alone or not.

“Yugi? I'm back.”

Yugi got up off the couch and, after maneuvering skillfully around his two slumbering friends, he walked out of the living room to greet Yami. And Yami was, he noticed with relief, by himself. Grinning, he went over and grabbed the young man's arm. “I'm so glad your back! Jou and Honda fell asleep on me, and I was so bored!”

Yami frowned. “Oh, I'm sorry, Yugi.”

“It's not your fault. So, how was the dated?” The teenager wanted to know.

“It was a normal date,” the guardian explained. “Only, when I tried to kiss her after dropping her off at home, her father walked out on his and started yelling. It was pretty embarrassing.”

Yugi giggled. Yami noticed that his laugh was somewhat similar to Anzu's. Only it was more childish and innocent. It suited the small boy. “Mr. Mazaki is a bit intimidating,” he explained. “It took him forever before he trusted me enough to even let me inside the house. But he really is a good guy once you get to know him.”

Yami shrugged his shoulders. “Well, there wasn't much kindness coming from him tonight.” He yawned and began unbuttoning his shirt. Heading up the stairs, he swung the unbuttoned shirt over his shoulder and then glanced down at the boy. “I'm going to go wash up and get my pajamas on, all right? I'll be back down in a few minutes.”

Yugi blushed brightly and tried not to stare at the other's exposed, tanned chest. “O-okay,” he replied, his voice taking on a squeaky tone.

The Angel disappeared upstairs into his room. The tri-haired teen groaned to himself and trudged back into the living room. What the hell was happening to him?
