Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Faraway in Ancient Egypt ❯ The Book ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Hello! I hope you enjoy this fic very much, I have taken my experiences from writing Across the Border of Popularity and My Brother and I and written a more enjoyable one (I hope).

This fic won't be as angsty and confusing as My Brother and I, nor as happy as Across the Border of Popularity. ^_^

Just in case this fic gets kinda confusing, leave your question in your review. If I can, I'll answer it in the next chapter. If your question does not get featured, that means that if I tell, I'll ruin the story.

The main paring is Seto/Jou. The others are featured once or twice. Yes, I have decided to concentrate on Seto and Jou.

And I'm also going to refer to Jou as Jou, or Katsuya. Jonouchi is WAY to annoying to write each time.

Ready? Let's begin.

~ Faraway in Ancient Egypt ~

~ Chapter One: The Book ~

Jou's POV

First off, let me get this straight. Kaiba and I have been worst enemies ever since we met. I mean, if you try to act friendly to a guy who in return calls you a puppy, you wouldn't actually lie down and take it in, would you? I mean, he's around my age, which is sixteen or seventeenish, and he owns a company. So he's filthy rich, and he doesn't even bother to make friends. He'd rather brush them aside like dirt.

In other words, he's the last person on Earth both you and I would want to associate with. To lay it even simpler, I hate him and he hates me.

So what on Earth am I doing in his house? Mansion I guess you could call it.

But I'm getting way to ahead of myself. I might as well tell how I got here in the first place.

~ Flashback Still Jou's POV~

I was sitting at my desk, waiting for Yugi and the others to show up. For some reason, I was the first one to arrive, if you didn't count Moneybags over there. Yep, that's right, Seto Kaiba. Right now he's typing away at his laptop, muttering about stock exchange or something like that. I bet he'd get along really well with my dad. My dad's also in the business area, but he recently lost his job, and he's been stomping around the house, thoroughly pissed off. Anyway, he's staring at me right now, which is kinda unnerving.

"Yo, Kaiba, something wrong with me?" Great going Jou. Now he'll probably insult you or something. At least Anzu isn't here. She'd probably start preaching to him about friendship and how we should get along with each other. Yami would just kick his ass. But he's back at his laptop again, typing like mad. Oh well. To tell the truth, I'd wish he would insult me or something. I'm getting really bored, really fast. I hate my alarm clock.

"Hey, Jou!"

"Hi Ryou!" Ryou, the only friend in my group that has long, white hair that's has the ends spiked, has just arrived. Although he doesn't look too happy. "Something wrong?" Ha. Second time I've asked someone that in ten minutes.

"Bakura just robbed a liquor store last night." Ryou answered, rubbing his head, wincing as he did. "And he drank ten bottles in my body… Ugh, I feel horrible."

There's something about Ryou's british accent that makes it all the more funny when he complains. But I don't think he considers it very funny. Kaiba's stopped typing at his laptop. Instead, he's folding it up, and standing to stretch.

The door flies open, and I wish I had a camera to show how shocked Kaiba was. He jumped about a foot in the air, and cried out, "Mokuba! Stop slamming the door!"

I couldn't help but laugh.

"Scared, Kaiba?" Yami walks through the door, a camera clutched in his hands. "I've finally figured out how to work a camera. You get to be the first one in my picture history." I think Kaiba's about to strangle the spirit.

Luckily, in walks Kinomoto-sensei. "Something wrong, Kaiba, Motou?" Third time I've heard that phrase in twenty minutes. "Jonouchi, please get off the floor before everyone decides to follow suit." As I get up, I see Kaiba's mouth twitch into a smirk. Ignore him, ignore him, ignore him, I chant to myself, as I walk pass him to Yugi, Yami, Ryou, Honda and Anzu.

"I think the floor is where you belong, puppy," he whispers to me.

Ignore him, ignore him, ignore him…!

"How long have you two been here?" Yugi asks, as we find a spot in the back of the room to sit at.

"About ten to twenty minutes for me," Ryou answers, wincing horribly. "If you'll excuse me…" He dashes out the door, clutching his head. Kinomoto-sensei follows him.

"What happened to him?" Anzu asks, glancing towards where Ryou had run out. "Headache?"

"No," I answer, feeling sorry for Ryou. "His yami robbed a liquor store last night, and pretty much drank all that he stole." I saw Yami bristle. "He'll be fine, after he takes aspirin," I quickly add. "Ryou'll be fine."

The bell rings, and the rest of the students file in, ushered by Kinomoto-sensei. "Bakura went to see the nurse," he whispered to us, "I think he's going home too."

I'll bet first thing after school, Yami's going to teach Bakura a lesson about the yamis' duties to their hikaris.

"Settle down, class!" Kinomoto-sensei calls out. "Seeing how today is a short day, I'll assign you your partners for the history project." Oh boy, how could I have forgotten that? "Your partner will be assigned by your last name. So, unless you need help, find your partner, please."

Yugi and Yami are looking sympathetically at me. I wonder why.

It's obvious who they'll be partners with. The only difference between their last name is that Yami's has an `u' at the end, and Yugi's doesn't. Yami told us that if he used Yugi's last name, it'd seemed pretty awkward, since they are dating and all of that. Anzu is with this other cheerleader, I think her name is May.

"All right," Kinomoto-sensei interrupts. "Let's see if you have this right." He reads through, and stops at my name. "Jonouchi and… Kaiba."

Wait. Did he just say my name, with… Moneybags!? While I'm gaping aat my teacher like he just turned into Bakura, Ryou's yami, and threatened to turn us all into Barney, Kaiba voiced my thoughts.

"NANI (what)?!" Kaiba asked, his voice growing dangerously soft.

Uh-oh, sensei, you'd better head him off right now…

"You heard me, Kaiba," Kinomoto-sensei said, smiling. I swear he's too optimistic. "You and Jonouchi are partners for the history project." He's grinning like a maniac now.

Meanwhile, Yami's pulled out his camera, and he's taking pictures of Kaiba and his expressions. I hope he'll give some to me.

"All right, now that you have been assigned to your partners, I'll assign which ancient civilization you'll be researching on." Kaiba plunks down on the chair next to me.

Before he can open his mouth, I interrupt him. "Listen, Kaiba. Just `cos we're working on this project together, it won't give you any reason to insult me any further. So let's just get this project done and over with." As I turned around, I could have sworn his eyes showed a sign of hurt.

"Kaiba, Jonouchi, you two will be researching on ancient Egypt. I expect one page on anything you can find out about Egypt, and then," he handed Kaiba a thick pile of dirt-colored lined paper. "Then I'll expect you to write a minimum of a two hundred paged novel that has the setting set in ancient Egypt. I would prefer it be a work of fiction. Typed on the computer, printed on these paper." And with that, he turned and went onto Yami and Yugi.

"Well then," I said, laughing nervously. "You any good at writing?"

Kaiba nodded. "Yes. But what I want to know is if you know anyplace that has books about ancient Egypt." Wow. One sentence and he hasn't even insulted me yet. That's a first.

"How about the library?"

"Sure, I have one in my house. Come over today after school, hopefully we can find something out." He stood up, and began to pack up. "Class is almost over."

"Eh… Right." I quickly scrambled up, and stuffed the papers inside my satchel. Kaiba stopped my hand by grabbing it, and pulled out the papers.

"I'll take care of the paper for now."

Honda is snickering as we walk out of class. "Y'know, Jou, I've never seen Kaiba act like that towards you. Who knows, maybe you two will bond." I push him out of the way.

"Just shut up, Honda."

~ End Flashback ~

Oh yeah. That's why I'm here. A butler appears at the door, bowing slightly. "Katsuya Jonouchi?"

"Yeah, that's me."

"Follow me." The butler bows again, and leads me inside. As we head towards what I'm supposing is to lead to the library, I pass the living room where Mokuba and one of his friends are playing.

"Hey, Jou!" Mokuba greets, waving at me. He then turns towards his friend. "That's Jou. He's a great duelist!" Glad to know someone in this house respects me.

"Right in here. Master Seto is awaiting your arrival." I enter the library and freeze.

~ Seto's POV ~

I groan as I throw another book into a colossal pile of books. I've been at it for two hours, and I still haven't found anything remotely interesting, or about ancient Egypt, for that matter.

Throwing another book into the pile, I lay down. Once Jonouchi gets here, we may as well go to the library.

~ Jou's POV ~

I stop as I see Kaiba lying on the plush carpet of the library, staring up at the ceiling. His school jacket is unbuttoned, revealing his white t-shirt underneath. Next to him is a enormous pile of books, discarded messily. "Kaiba?"

He looks up, and I see his mouth twitch slightly. I dunno if it was a smile or a smirk. "Took you long enough, Jonouchi."

That's the first time he's ever called me by one of my given names. "Hey. What are you doing?"

Kaiba gestures towards the pile of books. "Looking for anything about ancient Egypt."

"And?"

"Nothing." He stands up, surveying me slightly. "Are your parents expecting you anytime?"

No. My mom is living somewhere else with Shizuka, my little sister. And my dad's probably getting drunk somewhere. "It'll be fine." I answer. "I'm not expected anytime soon."

Kaiba nods, a smirk spreading over his face. "Then come on. We're going to the public library." He leads me into his garage, pausing to tell Mokuba where he's going. And then… As he opens the door and light floods onto he cars, my eyes bug out. His limo is nowhere to see, instead, is a dark blue Mercedes. Kaiba's already gotten in the driver's seat. "Well?"

I hop into the seat next to him, as he opens the garage door. "One question. Are you even allowed to drive?"

But he ignores my question, and tosses me a CD holder. "Pick one." I sort through his CD's pulling out on by my favorite band. I can by he way he's acting, Kaiba enjoys this group too.

We pull in to the library's parking lot, except a puppy is the way. Kaiba swerves, missing the dog. In the process, I accidentally fall into his lap. We both remain in that position for a second or tow, I in shock, and Kaiba, I hoped, in shocked too. I get up, realizing I accidentally pulled off one of his buttons on his trench coat.

"Sorry," I apologize, as he glances down on his coat.

He shrugs, showing me one of my tags that hang around my neck. "We're equal."

I hold up my silver chain, and see how it was ripped off. "No prob."

I scramble out of the car, and we head into the library. Kaiba immediately leads me to a section of books, all leather-bound and worn. The place also had a musty feeling.

"Help me look," Kaiba says, scanning the books. That's a first. Kaiba asking me for help.

"Hey, look!" I pull out a book from the shelf. It was jammed at the very end, shoved into the very back of the bookshelf. As I pulled it out, I swore I felt it tremble.

Kaiba took it, flipping through the first part of the book. "This isn't bad, puppy. Good job."

I glared at him. True, he had complimented me, but he had called me a puppy again. And I thought he forgot all about it. "Listen. Stop calling me that. You act like you're so high and better that us, but you're just as low as us, even worse! Moneybags," I spat.

Kaiba bristled. "Well, excuse me." I glare at him, and he glares at me.

I snatch the book out of his hands. "I found it, so had it over!"

He pulled it back, gritting his teeth. "It'll take you forever to read all of that, with your dull intellect."

We now had a tug-of-war game going on, as we tugged the book back and forth and called each other names.

Kaiba gives a mighty jerk, and the book flies out of my hands, landing open on the last page. Instead of seeing words, a dark portal appeared, and grew larger as I watched it. Instinctively, I grabbed onto Kaiba. He smelled kinda good. Like lavender or something like that. He didn't' seem to mind. Instead, he was staring at the portal in horror. I looked at it too, and found that it had grown larger. And larger. Until…

The floor underneath us gave way, and we were spiraling into the portal. The only thing I could feel was Kaiba's sweet smell, and his strong hold around my waist, and then everything went back…
