The Domino High School bell rang out, dismissing classes for that day. As Yugi walked outside he breathed in the fresh air, glad to be outside and out of a classroom.
Yugi slowly began walking home, unaware of the person lurking in the shadows, stalking him. His Millennium Puzzle, a golden pyramid from Ancient Egypt, thumped on his chest as he walked; it hung around his neck on a chain. Yugi never noticed the figure behind him, following him. Yami, the spirit living inside his puzzle, might've noticed, but he was sleeping in his soul room, unaware of the danger that lurked so very near.
Then, out of nowhere, a bolt of yellow energy shot out, striking the boy. First, Yugi had felt warmth, then the pain of being hit with a thousand knives. It was all Yugi remembered before he passed out, his body hitting the ground with a thud.
When Yugi awoke, he found himself lying on the carpet of a small library. The mauve carpet went nicely with the oak book shelves, desks, and chairs. A small fire crackled softly on the opposite side of the room. Small, navy blue lamps sat on each desk with a chain to pull to summon the light. Notebooks lay scattered on desks, along with pens and books. Yugi softly sat up, his body still tingling from the jolt of energy that had coursed through it.
“Glad to see you're awake,” a soft female voice said. “I was afraid you had died on me…Now that would not have been good.”
“Who are you?” Yugi asked in a still some-what weak voice.
The woman rose from the chair she had been sitting in and moved towards Yugi; out of the shadows. Yugi gasped. The woman was beautiful; she had long, midnight blue hair, almost black, that fell between her shoulder blades. Her skin was pale, like that of cream, and her eyes shone a magnificent violet. But, it was not her beauty that had made Yugi gasp…Rather; it was the object she was spinning around in her hand: the Millennium Puzzle.
“…My…Puzzle…Give it back!!”
Clicking her tongue and shaking her head, she replied, “No can do, Yugi. I've always wanted the Millennium Puzzle and I began searching for it as soon as you completed it. It took me longer than I expected, but it matters not. I have it now.”
“Give…It…back!” Yugi yelled, lunging for the puzzle, but Sapphire easily dodged him. Then, grabbing him by the collar, she said, “I won't tolerate this kind of arrogance from you, Yugi.” With that, she shoved Yugi away causing him to hit the floor with a loud thud. Yugi, however, rose again and lunged for the Millennium Puzzle and again was thrown to the floor. This continued as Yugi tried again…And again…And again…And again…And again…Until he could no longer stand. At that point his chest was heaving, trying to fill up with much needed air. His head, wrists, and chest bled, silently trickling crimson onto the carpet. Then, in one final attempt to rescue his friend, Yugi lunged at Sapphire…And for a split second his fingers came in contact with the Puzzle. It was all he needed.
Yugi fell to the floor once again; his muscles too sore and his body too weak to break his fall. Sapphire had gasped in horror as the small, golden pyramid began to shine with immense power; liquid gold poured out like mist. And then Yami materialized in front of her. His crimson eyes threw daggers at her and he shook from the rage coursing through his veins.
“You…DARE…Touch my puzzle…AND my hikari…You will die.”
Sapphire just smirked at him and said, quite sarcastically, “Really?”
Yami's scowl only deepened further as he gathered his energy to send the blasted woman to the Shadow Realm.
“Sorry Yami, I'm afraid you'll have to fight me some other time…” She grew transparent, and then dissolved, disappearing all together.
Yami would have tried to follow her, if not for the fact that Yugi laid on the floor, blood streaming from his wounds. He gently picked Yugi up, one hand under his knees, the other grasping his shoulders, careful not to touch the boy's cuts and bruises.
`Now how to get out of here…'
Yami desperately tried to find a way out. He checked walls, behind bookshelves, and even gazed at the ceiling in some hope of finding a way out. Every minute, Yugi grew weaker in his arms. The patter of blood was heard on the carpet and Yugi had begun violently shivering, his lips turning blue.
After several more minutes, Yugi's breath became harsh and broken. Yami knew he had to get Yugi to a hospital or he would die. It had been millennia since Yami had tried the spell and he could barely remember it, but it was their last chance. He closed his eyes, calling upon his Egyptian powers, and imagined himself and Yugi in front of Domino Hospital.
`Take me there.'
First, nothing happened, then Yami began to feel light, almost weightless. He was dissolving into the air and when he reappeared he was in front of the hospital. Yami wasted no time rushing Yugi inside so that he might live.
