…I Love You…
When Yugi had returned home that night, his grandfather was not furious and angry like Yugi thought that he would be. Instead, King Solomon was filled with joy and happiness at seeing his grandson alive and well. Yugi had confessed everything to his grandfather that night. He told him about the items, about how they were transformed into humans, and how he had fallen in love with a human. Then he told him about how they were changed back. The whole time Yugi was talking, the small prince was forcing himself to remain calm and not to breakdown and cry. But it didn't matter. His grandfather could see the hurt in his amethyst orbs. King Solomon listened to everything that Yugi had told him and, at the end of Yugi's narrative, he pulled Yugi into his arms where the small boy cried.
It now had been a month since the day that Yugi, Jou, Ryou, and Malik were turned back into their original selves and the four mermaids went up to the shore every single day since then to visit their human counterparts.
A lot had happened in a month's time. After Seto had placed a few calls, Anzu was taken to mental facility because of her incessant rants about magical items and mythical creatures such as mermaids. Seto had also, ingeniously, switched the minister that married Anzu and Yami with a mere servant making the marriage completely invalid. Eventually, Malik and Marik, even though they had tried as hard as they could not to, fell in love. Ryou and Bakura had also fallen in love.
Even though it was slightly chilly out due to the fact that it was now the season of autumn, Yami's face held a warm smile as he walked up to his love in the cold ocean water.
“I got you something,” Yami said pulling out a white rose from behind his back.
“Yami! It's so beautiful!” Yugi said happily.
Yami smiled at Yugi's reaction and then added softly: “I know. It reminds me of you.”
“How?” Yugi asked tilting his head in a cute manner.
Yami remained silent for a moment or two as he thought carefully about what he was going to say. Finally, the taller of the two said romantically: “Well, it's white and you always use to wear white. It's beautiful like you. It's soft like your skin and gentle like your eyes. “
“But the best part,” Yami said looking into Yugi's eyes, “is what's inside.”
Yami then slowly placed two fingers inside of the rose and pulled out a beautiful, diamond ring. “It's everlasting like my love for you,” Yami said reaching out and grabbing Yugi's hand.
Yugi almost had a heart attack. He actually thought that his heart did stop for a second. What in the world was Yami doing?
Yugi opened his mouth and in a slightly quavering voice said: “Yami…are you asking me—“
“Yes Yugi. I'm asking you to marry me,” Yami said sliding the ring onto Yugi's finger.
Warm tears poured out of Yugi's eyes and dropped into the water below them as the small boy pounced on to the person in front of him and kissed him passionately and lovingly.
“Is that a yes?” Yami said with a smile and all Yugi could do was nod excitedly. Nut suddenly, the happiness disappeared and Yugi looked from the ring on his finger to Yami and then to the water. Before Yami could ask what was wrong, Yugi said sadly: “Yami, we can't get married…I'm a mermaid…you're a human…”
Yami reached out and held both of Yugi's hands in his. “Yugi, look at me,” Yami said sternly but softly. Yugi really wanted to look anywhere else except in Yami's eyes at this moment but nevertheless he looked into the crimson eyes in front of him.
“Yugi, do you love me?” Yami asked slowly.
“Of course I do! With all my heart and soul,” Yugi said quickly as he still kept eye contact with his love.
Yami smiled and said: “And I love you too. Yugi, we were meant to be together. That's why I was able to snap out of that spell. When I thought that you were in danger, I was able to regain control of myself. Don't you see? Nothing can stop us. Not a girl, not a magical item, and certainly not the fact that you are a mermaid and I am a human.”
Yugi looked at Yami sadly. “But don't you want to be married with someone that you can hold at night and wake up next to in the morning? Someone that you can share meals with and share a…family with. Someone that you can be with all the time.”
Yami just shook his head. “No Yugi. I don't want to be married to someone. I want to be married to you”
Yugi smiled and said slowly: “I want that to.”
“Then you'll marry me?” Yami asked hopefully.
Yugi nodded. “Of course I will Yami. It would make me the happiest mermaid in the sea.”
Yami's smile widened as he said playfully: “Now how about another kiss to seal the deal.”
Yugi giggled and once again placed a kiss on his fiancé's lips.
“It is beautiful, Yuge,” Jou said happily looking down at the diamond on Yugi's hand. When Yugi had told Jou of his and Yami's engagement, the blonde couldn't be any happier.
“I'm so happy for you,” Ryou said genuinely as he hugged his small friend.
“Thank you,” Yugi said. The support that he had been getting from his friends these past weeks had really helped him through this hard time.
Jou laughed and said: “I wonder what Malik is going to say. Don't tell him it was Yami. At least not at first. I want to see what he does.”
Jou knew how protective Malik was especially over the two smaller boys in the group.
Yugi nodded and as if on cue, Malik entered the spacious cove carrying a large metal stick.
“Hey, look what I found! Isn't it cool?” Malik said leaning it against the wall. He raised an eyebrow when he looked up and saw everyone smiling at him suspiciously.
“What?” Malik said cautiously.
“Malik,” Yugi said with a smile. “Someone proposed to me.”
Malik sighed and then picked up the metal stick that he just placed against the wall. “Okay where is he?” Malik said demandingly.
Jou laughed. “No Malik, you're not gonna kill him.”
“Says you!” Malik said and then looked back at Yugi.
“So, who's the unfortunate soul?” Malik said.
Yugi just smiled. “Yami.”
Malik immediately dropped the metal stick and swam up to his friend and embraced him tightly.
“Yugi! I'm so happy! It's about time!” Malik said.
“Malik…I can't…breathe,” Yugi said as he began to feel his bones crush under the intensity of Malik's hug.
“Opps! Sorry!” Malik said.
For the next hour, Yugi and his friends discussed everything that they would have to do. The room was filled with excitement and happiness. This was the first time in a long time that the four friends laughed and had smiles on their faces.
King Solomon wasn't dumb. He knew that Yugi and the others went up to the shore everyday. He had also noticed the ring on Yugi's finger and, taking an educated guess, he figured that Yami had finally proposed to his grandson.
He had noticed Yugi's sudden happy manner in the past few days. Since the day Yugi had come back, he was only happy in the morning, right before he swam up to visit Yami, and then when he came back to the palace, he would be absolutely miserable until the next morning. But now Yugi was happy all day. That was until the nighttime at least. King Solomon always needed to pass Yugi's bedroom in order to get to his own. For the past few days, every time the king would pass his grandson's room, he would hear Yugi's quietly sobbing and he would hear Yugi say small prayers to the gods that they would just turn him back into a human but his prayers never came true. He would say to the gods how Yami deserved someone who could be with him and take care of him every second, of every day. Something that he couldn't do if he remained a mermaid.
Listening to Yugi's heart break every night would only make King Solomon feel like a sword was stabbing his own heart. Yugi was the only family that he had left and the fact that Yugi could never truly be happy only made the pain the king felt worse. Now, the king had to admit; he didn't like the fact that Yugi was in love with a human but…this human obviously loved his grandson very much and had taken care of him. Most importantly, he made Yugi happy and that was all that King Solomon could ever ask for.
For days, the king sat in his throne room staring at his trident trying to think of something that he could do to change Yugi and his friends back but honestly there was nothing that he could do. King Solomon was well aware of these Millennium items. As the sea king, he had known that these magical items had been dropped into the sea but it amazed him that they were actually found. He also knew a lot about the `Seventh Item.' The magic of that item was irreversible. There was no way that he or anybody else could get around it. Yugi, Jou, Ryou, and Malik were going to be mermaids. They had to be. At least…sometimes…
The king instantly stood up from his seat. That was it! King Solomon grabbed his trident next to him and quickly swam out of the throne room and upwards towards the shore.
