Title: First child of shadow
Chapter 1

Strange. He hadn't expected death to be so comfortable. He floated gently, rocked in a comforting aura of bluish-purple, darkening to black at the far edges of his vision, and felt what seemed like gentle hands upon him, brushing away his hair. Each touch sent new strength through his weary limbs, and with a sigh, he closed his eyes and let himself rest. The shadows curled around him protectively as the mage's battered soul rested.
Elsewhere, tears ran down a Pharaoh's cheeks in the dead of night, as he stared at the tablet the guards had brought back to him. For two weeks he had waited and hoped for his loyal priest to come back alive, and now, it was too late.
Mana watched the Pharaoh, and though she felt loss at her teacher's death, she knew that the Pharaoh felt much worse. She tiptoed away on silent steps, as not to disturb him, and found comfort in Priestess Aishizu's arms.

When he woke, it was to the same darkness, and at first, he wondered, but then, before his eyes, it began to change… it resolved itself into the familiar shapes of the Palace, but that was not all. Strange, other areas began to crop up. A densely thick forest the likes of which he had never seen before, only heard in tales and his imagination, fields of grass as far as the eye could see, rivers leading to the crashing spray of the ocean, so many things…
Was this an Illusion?

This is no illusion, child...
He started in surprise. Where had that voice come from? As if in response, a wisp of shadow curled about his ankle with a warm feeling.
We are all around you, child…
We are glad to see you have survived the ordeal…
Do you like this better, child?

“Are you the Shadows then?” He whispered, partially in fear. The Shadow Realm… he had heard whispers of it, and the tablet monsters were rumored to live in the realm, but he saw no living thing other than himself.
We are.
“Why do you call me child? Surely I am not the first…” And here he stumbled, “Monster that has been created…”
You are the first with a soul. The Shadows replied. The others we do not allow to live here. They sleep in their tablets until they are summoned. We have always been here, but we have been watching you. We like you.
W-Watching him?
“How?”
You are so naïve. We were in the Ring. When you lost the Ring and your magical bindings were released, we were set free.
“But… I only sealed my magic… you're not saying that…” Mahaado's eyes widened. “It can't be!”
Why not? You are very powerful, and you are talented. We have been watching you ever since we were created. Even when we were not in the Ring, we have watched you. After all…
We are yours.

“That can't be! Pharaoh Akunumkanon's brother High Priest Akunadin was the one who created the items! And I was not born…”
The Items had been created fifteen years ago.
He was twenty-four to the Pharaoh's eighteen years…
That would mean…
His magical power had awakened when he was nine….
With a sinking feeling, Mahaado felt ice fill his stomach. “Then you are saying, that… you have always been inside of me?”
We were dormant until we were given an outlet. Those gaudy gold trinkets proved an excellent one. And we liked you. That is why we gave you the Sennen Ring… because we were strongest there, save for the Eye… and even though the Eye's power is strong, its holder is weak. He will soon die.
And then you will be the strongest.
We would like that very much.

“But the Puzzle.” Mahaado shook his head. “Is not the Puzzle the strongest?”
Laughter. The puzzle? Yes, yes, it holds the power of Unity, but you see… the Ring holds the power of Love.
“Love?” Mahaado shook his head. “That cannot be…”
Wherefore why not? You may see your loyalty to the Pharaoh as loyalty, child, but we see it as it truly is. There is no use in deceiving yourself…
Warmth coiled around his shoulders, like a parent's embrace, and he felt tears glitter in his eyes. It was true. He was ashamed to admit it, but it was true.
He was in love with his Pharaoh. He ought to…
Even Seth desired Horus, his own nephew. The shadows whispered. And do not worry, child. Rest now. We will protect your love for you.
He colored, but truly, rest did sound appealing… he let sleep claim him once again, as the shadows plotted.

Indeed, they loved Mahaado, for they had been born of him, and he was also the first to willingly come into their domain. The other, a few spirit-beasts but mostly demons were denied access, ripped from their hosts, angry and spiteful - who wanted a kingdom of such things?
Besides, they had no mind. Nothing amusing about them…
So it was an odd dichotomy of relationships. The Shadows didn't care much. But since they loved their child, they would protect the Pharaoh.
Even if they didn't like him very much… Yami was tolerable, and that was what counted. They watched Mahaado sleep as they began to integrate, unlocking the blocks of magic he had written in his own mind. Foolish child.
Power might have corrupted, but their power was one no sane man could wield for long. Better to be safe. Besides, Mahaado wasn't exactly sane
New spells began to dance in the surface of his mind as he slept on.
Time traveled strangely in this Shadow Realm, and they needed time, so though time on earth passed little, years could have passed here.
Mahaado needed to be ready. They gave him information that no normal monster would know, mixed it with the training he already had and created new spells, new shields, new attacks, and then they waited for him to wake.
The Pharaoh was getting restless, after all, and that was no good, especially with that despicable Thief still alive.
At least the Ring had no more of its former power. The shadows were home in their realm. And they had a child to take care of.
A child who was opening his eyes, no longer their former blue but now a vibrant gold, blonde hair a silky lavender, a mark of their power. He was their child
Armor was purple for the shadows, shading to black…
Perfect.

Damn Powerful! Mahaado, because honestly, if the guy's the best magician in Egypt, he better be SOMEWHAT useful! *Gripes about Blue-Eyes being stronger than Dark Magician. But Dark Magician knows four different attacks and a bunch of trap cards! Though I probably went overboard. *Grin* I suppose this also explains why Mahaado wears purple armor when his name is “Black Magician” *shrug*

Mahaado: I'm not sure I like you, Phantomness
Phantomness: *Glares* If it weren't for me, you wouldn't get laid without getting raped!
Yami: *sighs* She has a point there. Me, on the other hand… I have no such problem.
Phantomness: *Seething frenzy* Want me to toss you to Malik and Bakura so they can double-team ya?

And… on random notes, because I'm bored…
I watched Episodes 112 and 113, first one dub (bleh), second one sub, they were the only ones I could find anyways. My reactions…

Ooh! Look how *pretty* Mahaado is in all his different costumes! And yes, I know they're fusion monsters, but they're still Mahaado. *Swoon* and his hair and eye color keep changing too, and skin color, but who cares? ^^

Second thought - damn, some of those look girlier than his dark magician outfit. That's giving me ideas. Yum.
