Chapter Four

**

“Are you sure you understand everything, Mokuba?”

“Yeah, you've only been over it a billion times! I've watched you do everything before, anyway.”

“Alright,” Kaiba replied, trying to reassure himself that the security of his mansion and his business was in capable hands. He had to remind himself that Mokuba was a very smart kid, even though he was only thirteen.

Mokuba knew all the codes and passwords to the alarms of the buildings, knew what to do in an emergency situation, and knew what to do if the paparazzi happened to present themselves to him. He had also gone over in fine detail with his brother, the schedule that was planned out for Kaiba Corporation for the following three weeks. Technically, Kaiba knew Mokuba would be out of harm's way while he was away in China, anyway. He had been on enough business trips to know and trust his bodyguards that he had hired to protect himself and Mokuba over the years. Business trips, however, only lasted a few days - a week at most. He hadn't been away from his brother for longer than that, and was feeling slightly edgy about leaving him alone.

Truth be told, the billionaire really didn't have the time or patience for going on this trip in the first place. He had been to China many times - not on vacation, though - so it wasn't really a big deal. He had other, more important things to deal with back in Japan, especially with Kaiba Corporation. The only reason he was making himself go was because he wanted to pass his Chinese class, and Mokuba had pounced on the chance of being alone for three weeks, having the mansion to himself. Kaiba gave in to the fact that maybe it was time to let Mokuba start being a teenager.

“Are you ready to go, yet? You don't want to miss your plane, nii-sama!” Mokuba reminded.

“Yes, I'm ready.” Kaiba replied. “Let's go.”

Yuugi looked around the airport terminal. He knew he was supposed to go to gate 43 after having checked in, but which way was it? He had never been to this airport before - Domino just so happened to have two, and this was the larger one. A small sweat broke out on his brow.

/I don't know where to go, Yami./

//Why don't you ask somebody, aibou?//

/Nah… if I just keep walking I'm bound to see someone else, here./

//What if you're the first to arrive?//

Yuugi looked down at the Sennen Puzzle draped over his chest. It began to glow. /Malik or Ryou must be here, Yami! The Puzzle is glowing./

//You're right, hikari. Just keep walking until you find one of them.//

Yuugi took his other half's advice and started down the corridor. Relief came over him like a tidal wave when he saw a sign up ahead stating that gates 40 - 45 weren't far away. He hooked a left at 43 and up a flight of stairs before finding Ryou Bakura seated near a large window overlooking the tarmac, nose deep in a book. Rather absurdly, the five points of the Sennen Ring were directed toward Yuugi, shining luminously. A chill ran down Yuugi's spine. Ryou, however blind to the Sennen Ring, looked up the moment Yuugi entered the lounge.

/Thank Ra for that!/ Yuugi exclaimed mentally.

Yami chuckled. //Won't the airports in China be a lot larger than this?//

/Well… yeah… But at least I won't be alone!/

Yuugi made his way over to the blanch-haired boy and sat down next to him. “Ohayou, Ryou-kun. How long have you been here for?”

“Not long, maybe ten minutes. I think we must be the first to arrive.”

Yuugi nodded. “Isn't this exciting? I just can't wait to go!”

“Well you'll be waiting a while yet,” Bakura materialized beside his hikari, leering at Yuugi. “We have to wait three hours, remember?”

“I think he's quite well aware of that,” Yami said austerely, also appearing.

“No time for formalities today, Pharaoh?” Bakura smirked spitefully.

“For you? I wouldn't dream of it.” Yami replied composedly. “You don't even deserve the title of Thief King.”

“Oh and I suppose you, as Pharaoh, do?” Bakura rolled his brown eyes. “Please. The kingdom crumbled under your reign.”

“Bakura!” Ryou shrieked, blushing profusely in embarrassment.

“You take that back!” Yami bellowed.

“Make me, you royal, anorexic waste of skin!”

“May the Almighty Ra strike you down where you stand, you conniving snake!”

“May Anubis eat your soul, Atem, slowly and painfully!”

“Don't you dare call me by that name, you thieving street scum!”

“Oh so now the ego has landed?”

“Shut up, both of you!”

All heads in the immediate vicinity turned toward Ryou at his seemingly random outburst. Something had to be said, though; other people in the terminal were starting to get uncomfortable in listening to the quarrelling spirits. The security guard seemed to be debating whether to interfere or not - he didn't seem too keen. Malik suddenly arrived, picking up instantly that some sort of commotion had been going on not long beforehand. The electricity in the air between Yami and Bakura was all too obvious.

“At it again, you two?” The platinum-haired boy stated monotonously.

Bakura scowled at him. “Shut up, Ishtar. The pompous idiot gets on your nerves just as much as mine.”

Malik shrugged. “True.”

“Bakura, get back in the Ring! Matsuri-sensei is coming.” Ryou said as he spotted his teacher coming toward them with Anzu at her side.

“Oh, Hell! Not her!” Yami said as he spotted the brunette girl, quickly vanishing.

Yuugi sweatdropped. “Hey, Anzu-chan! You made it.”

“Yeah!” she replied, putting her carry bag down. “I'm so glad I found all of you guys; this place was hard to get to! At least we're all together, now.” She smiled warmly at everyone.

//That woman makes me nauseous.//

Malik jumped a little in hearing his darker counterpart's comment. /You're not the only one. I almost feel sorry for Honda-kun, in a way./

//We need to find a way to dispel her. Can we drug her, cut out her kidneys and sell them on e-Bay?//

/Nice theory, but, I think we might just end up being a tiny little bit arrested if we did that./

//What about the Black Market, then?//

/I don't wanna be framed for murder, Marik. Anything you do, I get blamed for, remember?/

//Then… what do we do?//

/We could try making her life a living hell while we're away./ Malik smirked mentally to himself. Although the most-part of his psychotically-influenced morals had subsided, he still had his own dark thoughts from time to time.

//Could we “accidentally” push her over the side of the Great Wall?//

/That might seem a little obvious. Don't worry, we'll think of something…/

An inky black sky blotted with a riot of silver stars blanketed the landscape as the teenagers waited patiently aboard their Boeing 747, bound for Hong Kong. They were starting to get restless, as were the other passengers on board. They were waiting on one person, and that one person just so happened to be none other than Jounouchi Katsuya.

“This is the final boarding call for flight HK8072 bound for Hong Kong, China. Would the passengers on this flight please make your way to gate 43 immediately. Thank you.”

Jounouchi wheeled around the corner and up the stairs into gate 43, panting and running so fast he almost leapt through the air like some sort of gazelle-like creature that dwelled in the African savannah. A stewardess, almost ready to close the gates, was standing at the check-in point. Jounouchi used the last reserves of his energy to reach her before all hope was lost.

“Hey! Excuse me!” Jou hollered as he ran over to her. “Gomen, but I'm on this flight. It's not too late, is it?”

“You're just in time. Ticket, please?”

Jou handed her his ticket and carried on to board the plane. He tried unobtrusively to make an entrance, but everyone on the plane merely glared at him. He knew he had held everyone up. Sighing grimly, the blond youth made his way to his seat. He saw his friends scattered in assorted places on the plane, but didn't make any effort to greet them. He had had a hell of a time merely getting to the airport, the traffic was so congested; he just about had a panic attack when he couldn't find his passport when prompted for it and was held up at customs for walking through the metal detector with his studded leather belt on, resulting in a full-body search (minus the cavity check).

“A little late, aren't you?” the man sitting next to Jou said from behind his newspaper.

Jou grimaced to himself. “How the hell did I get stuck next to you?”

Blue eyes frowned from over the newspaper edge. “That's not the sort of attitude to be having now, is it, make inu? We're on vacation now; you should be happy.”

“Shut up, Kaiba. Just shut up.” Jou wasn't in the mood for Kaiba's antics, but this was exactly the mood Kaiba liked Jou to be in. Oh, how the fun was just beginning.

**

Jounouchi startled awake, for a moment disoriented by his surroundings. He realised in a split second he was still on the aeroplane; turbulence must have stirred him from his sleep. Seeing his water bottle made him aware how dry his mouth was and he drank quickly, slaking his thirst. Looking out the window, all he could see was black - no lights, no clouds, nothing. They must still be flying over the East China Sea; the last time Jounouchi had woken up, the pilot had announced that they were not far from flying over Taiwan. Jou got up to go to the toilet, suddenly realizing his need was urgent.

The plane hit more turbulence, followed by an announcement from the pilot that they were passing over Taiwan and it shouldn't last for much longer. The lights flashed on and off a couple of times as Jou tried to make his way steadily down the aisle to the bathroom. The lights suddenly flicked off again, followed by another hasty declaration that the passengers had nothing to worry about. Jou quickly went into the bathroom and relieved himself, groping around in the dark.

Unexpectedly, as Jou came out, another figure walked out of the second bathroom directly opposite. They crashed into each other, Jou hitting his head on something rather blunt and protruding, and stumbled back.

“I'm sorry, are you OK?” Jou asked, reaching out to the person.

The lights flicked on again. “We must stop meeting like this.”

Jou recoiled as the sardonic CEO walked stoically past him, quickly retrieving his arm from Jou's grip. The blond rubbed his head in what seemed to be the usual place where Kaiba's chin connected with it whenever they bumped into each other. As of late it seemed to be happening more frequently, and Jounouchi couldn't help but feel foolish. Jou sighed and walked back down the aisle behind Kaiba, head hanging.

“Did you and Kaiba join the Mile High Club, Jounouchi-kun?” Otogi smirked infernally as the blond walked past.

Jou merely flushed. “One might think so.” He said, knowing how red he must be.

Jou sat back down next to Kaiba, who was clearly unimpressed at Jou's lame comeback, and was now typing away frantically on his laptop. Jou could see out the corner of his eye that the letterhead of his email had the initials `KC' on them, and figured it was business stuff.

About two hours had passed by the time the plane finally touched down in Hong Kong. It was just coming into twilight as they landed, the time zone having changed. Wearily, the fifteen students, two teachers and other passengers collected their baggage and made their way into the airport terminal. Jounouchi was too jetlagged to admire the new landscape, as were the others. Matsuri-sensei declared that they would be transferred to their hotel and could spend the rest of the evening as they pleased, so long as they didn't stray too far.

After everyone had checked in, Matsuri-sensei said, “Now, you all know that you are staying in twin-share rooms with your travelling buddy. You can have free leisure time to yourself until bed, which will be no later than eleven o'clock. Have fun, everyone!”

//Can we see what's at the buffet?//

/Bakura, will you never cease to be hungry?/ Ryou replied as he and Yuugi made their way to the elevator.

//I haven't eaten since we left Japan!//

Ryou hadn't stopped to think about that. /Oh, yeah! Sorry, yami, I forgot you weren't allowed to come out on the plane. People might have thought you were a stowaway if you did!/

//You're not a very good host, you know. Maybe you should return me to the pet shop.//

Ryou laughed out loud at his yami's comment, catching Yuugi's attention.

Yuugi looked slightly perplexed. “What's up, Ryou?”

“Oh, just Bakura. He's hungry; I think we'll go down to the hotel restaurant once I've put my things down. I just hope Matsuri-sensei doesn't see us - imagine what she would think, seeing both of us!”

“You, Malik and I are all going to have to be careful while we're here, Ryou.” Yuugi replied.

“Yeah, I know.” Ryou said, walking out of the elevator. The two boys soon reached their joint room. Bakura and Yami escaped the chambers of their Sennen Items once Yuugi had closed the door behind them.

“Thank Ra we're here!” Bakura shrieked, stretching out like a cat. “I haven't stayed in my soul room for that long in ages.”

“Nor have I, but I thought you would be used to it, having been in prison for the most part of your previous life, Tomb Robber.” Yami said with the slightest hint of a smirk.

Yuugi sweatdropped, noticing Bakura's eyes narrow. “So, uh, I'm going to take this bed,” he said, trying to change the subject, putting his things down on the right hand side of the room.

“I guess I'll have this one, then.” Ryou said, also putting his things down and walking to the small balcony. “What a beautiful place,”

Bakura joined him outside. “Doesn't seem much different at night than in Domino, if you ask me. Just closer to the sea.”

“It smells so fresh out here - like the ocean - compared to the smog of Domino. I bet they have really good seafood here.”

“Speaking of which,” Bakura began. “Let's go eat, what do you say?”

“It sounds like a plan,” Yami concurred.

“Who invited you?” Bakura retorted.

“I did.” Yuugi quickly interjected before more conflict arose.

**

“Well, this is it.” Otogi stated as he and Malik entered their room.

“It's not as bad as I thought it would be,” Malik said, inspecting the room. It was rather plain; most colours being neutral cream and sand, with a small balcony and bathroom tucked to the side.

//You know, hikari, maybe we should forget about that Anzu girl.//

Malik frowned at his yami's change of heart. /Hm? Why?/

//I think we should make Otogi our next project, instead!//

/Why? What the hell has he ever done to you?/

//No, not in that way…//

Malik paused. /… Are you serious?/

//I think he would be easy.//

/I barely know him! Besides, we're still working on Ryou, remember?/

//You've been trying to pursue him since you met him, hikari. Don't you think it's time to move on?//

Malik flushed in shame. It was true - he had had a crush on the white-haired boy ever since he set eyes on him, way back in the Battle City Tournament. Although he and his yami were close, they weren't exactly exclusive, and they both liked it that way. There was no rivalry or jealousy between them, because, more often than not, they were the ones that were together. Malik, however, felt that his fondness for the fair-haired hikari would never come to an end.

/I don't feel comfortable around Otogi. If you want to try, go ahead - but not right now./

On that note, Marik materialized, towering the usual six inches over Malik. “So, this is our pad for the next few days, huh?”

Otogi - who was digging around in his backpack for something - stood up on hearing a new voice. He gaped - without meaning to be rude - at the spirit who had suddenly appeared. He remembered him all too well - the tall, staunch, muscled body; wild, lustrous blonde hair; pupil-less mauve eyes; straight teeth and nose; razor-blade cheekbones set in a perfect heart-shaped face, and, of course, the jewellery that adorned him. He was really quite a magnificent creature, Otogi thought, up close. For some reason, the fear that Otogi had once felt toward Marik had now diminished. This was the closest the two had ever been.

Malik knew that Otogi felt awkward as soon as Marik had appeared. “Yeah, until Monday. So, uh, you wanna go eat?” he suggested, gesturing toward the door.

“Yeah, that sounds good. Um… it's nice to see you again, Marik.” Otogi said, daring to look at Marik.

“And you too, Dice King.” Marik said, accentuating the seductiveness in his tone.

Otogi flushed. He hadn't been called that for a long time and wondered how Marik knew of the nickname. It reminded him of the time when he first met Yuugi - how he nearly made Sugoruko broke from opening his shop, Black Crown; the time when he dueled Jounouchi and made him wear a dog suit; and of course how he had acted like a complete jerk to everyone until he came to his senses and realised that it was better to have friends rather than enemies. He had been overwhelmed with joy when Yuugi had forgiven him and even happier when he accepted Otogi into his clan.

Malik was starting to get impatient - and anxious; he knew that tone in Marik's voice all too well. “Come on, let's get down there before all the good food is gone.” He said, before his yami could potentially start to molest his roommate.

“I'm with you on that,” Otogi complied, starting toward the door.

/Ra damn it, Marik. Can't you behave for once?/

//Is that a rhetorical question?//

Malik deadpanned. /No!/

//Then… no?//

/This is only the first day of our trip, yami. I'm going to have to make friends with Otogi if we're to spend the rest of our holiday with him, and that means you can't scare him off!/

//So what am I supposed to do until then?//

/That's not my problem!/

//Technically, it is.//

Malik sighed. /Just… shag Bakura until I give you the all clear, or something. Why are you so intent on scoring with Otogi, anyway?/

//Because he's a new challenge.//

/Why can't you ever be satisfied with what you've already got?/

//Why can't you?//

Malik pursed his lips, saying no more. He had accidentally contradicted himself. The truth being that Malik really was happy with Marik, but he couldn't be satisfied until he had Ryou. Just once. If he could only have Ryou for one night, he would be content. But then, what if he became attached? He would be doomed. Bakura didn't like to share his toys. The white-haired thief had always been very protective of Ryou, especially around the Ishtars. Malik wasn't exactly sure why, but he had an idea. It seemed Ryou was popular game, and because Malik couldn't have him, it only made him want the other hikari all the more.

**

JoeysGal: Ooooh what a dilemma Malik is in! Must be a pain to have Marik for a yami, ne? The next chapter is going to be good - sorry if this one seemed a bit “Plain Jane”. Any ideas are welcomed!
