Chapter 1: The Escape
"Come on Yugi. We got to hurry!" Jounouchi whispered to his tri colored companion.
Yugi quickened his hobbling pace as Jounouchi threw an arm around his shoulders, pushing him along even faster. A whimper escaped from the smaller one's throat as he felt a trickle of liquid run down the side of his leg.
Their hurried footsteps where muffled by the moss covered stone walls. Soon a small light was visible in front of the hurried pair. Both quickened their pace once more, the smaller one still limping.
"Come on Yug! We're almost there!" Again the blond haired teen encouraged his friend and companion.
It was their escape. They had been planning it for many months now. Neither had though it was possible but then again, maybe the saying "anything's possible" is true, for here they where, almost free.
Both had been slaves all their lives. Passed from master to master they finally where sold to their current one. He was know to be the "slave breaker" and for a good reason. His hobby was to get slaves that still where "unbroken" and break their spirits by any means necessary. Just earlier that morning he had beaten Yugi.
"Get up you little runt" Thiesen snarled at the heap of bones at his feet. His leg shot out and kicked it; a small squeak of pain could be heard.
"Never ever make any noise when your not told to!" Thiesen roared, furious.
Grabbing Yugi's battered collar, he lifted the small boy helplessly off his feet and threw his across the room. With a sickening snap the tri colored mane snapped against the stone wall, his leg punctured by a sharp piece of stone. Yugi sank to the floor, unconscious, as his master walked out, a smirk on his face.
"Haha! Yugi we made it! We're free!" Blond hair danced around Jounouchi's lightened features as he raised his arms in victory. Turning back to Yugi he just grinned.
Grinning back, Yugi's violet eyes danced in the sun, his cold body soaking up the forgotten, but now welcomed, rays. Soon though, all this was forgotten as Yugi caught sight of many strangely dressed people staring at them.
"Um…Jou…I think we should keep going."
The blond headed boy looked around and gulped. Protectively he stepped in front of his friend and whispered to him over his shoulder.
"Look Yug. They're all dressed the same. I don't think we made it to the market"
Yugi looked around as he began to shake fearfully. They where in a garden, a very well tended one at that. Plants that even he knew didn't grow in Egypt where growing here. Flowers boasted their bright colors and water proudly flowed down makeshift waterfalls and through fountains.
Turning to look behind him Yugi suddenly gasped. Pulling at the sleeve of the taller boy's shirt he backed up a few steps.
"What is it Yug?" Jounouchi asked confused as he turned around. His jaw fell as he too backed up.
"We're in the Pharaoh's garden!" Violet eyes widened as Yugi said this, fear rising in his chest.
A beautiful fortress towered over the two friends. Made completely of gold the sun glinted off it, making its appearance even more majestic. Awed to silence the two teenagers glanced at one another and continued to back up.
"We got to get out of here." Jou whispered, his voice shaking.
Yugi simply nodded as he gulped. Turning they began to run again, pain shooting up and down Yugi's leg. Past stunned slaves, dodging their way through plants, benches, and people. Soon angry shouts reached their ears making them quicken their pace as fast as Yugi's hurt leg would allow them.
"I'm so sorry Jou. I'm so sorry." Yugi suddenly began to sob, his pace slowing slightly.
Jounouchi turned, grabbing his friends arm, and began to run again, Yugi in tow.
"Don't give up on us yet Yug. Until they have us captive we still have a fighting chance. We're still in this." Jou wheezed out between breaths.
A smile rose to the lips of the smaller teen as once again he quickened his pace until he was running side by side to his best friend. The sound of their persuaders drew closer and closer until they where in sight. In their hands they held menacing look spears and smaller knives hung from each of their waists. Their angry shouts pierced the peaceful silence that once was; heavy footsteps reminding the two run-a-ways that their freedom might be short lived. Dread began to take over the place where once courage and determination filled the tri colored boys chest.
Turning around a corner the two companions skidded to a halt as more guards came up the path in front of them. Trapped, after months of planning and so much pain, they where trapped.
Crystalline tears began to trace paths of sorrow down the small boys paled cheeks. Shakily he threaded his fingers over a clump of his friend's dirtied shirt.
"I'm sorry Jou. I'm so sorry…" Mumbling between sobs; Yugi pushed his head against the taller buy's frame.
Suddenly he felt his hair being ruffled and looked up, question becoming evident in his large violet eyes. He gaze was met with a sad smile from his friend.
"Yug…"
Never was the blond haired boy able to finish for at that moment the blunt end of a spear struck atop the head. Slowly he fell, first to his knees, his eyes rolling backwards, blond hair blowing wildly. He hovered there for a second, as if he was going to get up, but then fell face first to the ground with a small thud, the dust rising in a small cloud.
Yugi could hear screaming, so loud it hurt his ears. He willed it to stop, for it to leave him. But it didn't. Thrusting his hands over his ears he fell over his friend. Moister that he didn't recognize flowed freely down his face. Horror filled his violet eyes, making them larger then before.
A sharp pain came to the back of his head and the world went black, a peaceful, welcoming black.
