Chapter Seven

Isis and Kaiba had left shortly after Jounouchi and Honda had. They figured that somebody had to stay behind to watch the campsite, to make sure nothing was taken while they were gone, so they asked Mokuba and Rebecca. The two young teens seemed happy with that, glad that they could get some time alone together without the harassment of the others. With so much of a disconcerted frown from Kaiba, they both smiled their innocent-but-devious young teenage smiles and rushed back inside their tent.

The blue-eyed, black haired woman wasn't sure where in particular they were heading. She wasn't feeling hungry after what had happened earlier between Jounouchi and Kaiba, so didn't bother with the picnic basket. It seemed Kaiba didn't care for it either; he was too lost in his own thoughts to even acknowledge that Isis was following him. He would have stalked off by himself anyway, she figured. Maybe I'm just getting in the way.

Isis was still somewhat unsettled by Jounouchi's outburst. In all honesty, she also felt rather guilty. She knew she had been an accessory to the reason why Kaiba had broken up their relationship, but she didn't know that Jou had been so hurt to this degree. She wished Kaiba had told her before he made any irrational decisions. It made herfeel vulnerable, too. What if Kaiba found somebody else that he claimed to love, and abandoned her like he did Jounouchi? Would he do the same to her if someone more exciting and pretty came along? Someone who tickled his fancy? A look of annoyance came over her features, but Kaiba was walking ahead of her, not able to see it.

“Nothing and nobody will keep us apart, Isis.” Kaiba had once said. “I'm serious about you. I've been out of love with Jou for a long time now... and youare the one I want to be with.”

How could she have been so naïve? She knew Kaiba had potential as a lover. She saw the beauty in him that few others saw. She saw past the mask of his egotistical business life, and Ra knowshe was phenomenal behind closed doors. Far more than anyone could possibly ever imagine. She watched her blue-eyed man halt and turn around, looking back to her. She forced a smile onto her face, trying not to show any signs of irritation. She should have known that Kaiba could see through anyone like glass. He was a very intelligent person, almost too sharp for his own good.

“Are you alright? You seem a bit… edgy.” Kaiba said, clasping her hands in his.

“I'm fine,” Isis replied, not meaning to sound quite so stubborn. She knew he was highly skeptical when he flitted his eyes upward to the back of his head.

“It's Jounouchi, isn't it?”

Isis avoided his gaze. “Not really… but it doesn't matter, anyway.”

“It matters to me,” Kaiba said. “But I know you may think otherwise. I don't want there to be any secrets between us.”

Isis sighed inwardly, deciding she might as well be straight with him. “You broke up with Jounouchi because of me, Kaiba. Isn't that right?”

“Well, yes…”

“How do I know you won't do the same thing to me, one day?” Isis said sternly. “How do I know you won't drop me when someone better comes along?”

Kaiba rolled his eyes. “So that's what this is about. Who do you think I am? Some liar who makes up bullshit to get what I want?”

“You make it seem that way, sometimes,” Isis replied quietly. “And don't tell me you aren't capable of it!”

Kaiba grunted, really not wanting to deal with this right now. “At least I know how you really feel about me, now.” Kaiba's tone was bitter as he started to walk off.

“Seto!” Isis shrieked, tears brimming her eyes.

He turned and looked at her over his shoulder, glaring icily. “What?”

“Where are you going?”

“Away.” He replied.

Isis rolled her eyes; there was no point in arguing with him. “Fine.” She turned back toward camp, shoving her hands into her pockets angrily, trying to fight off the feeble teenage feelings welling up inside of her as burning tears spurted from the edge of her eyes.

Jou was glad that Honda hadn't broken any bones when he had tripped up on that grassy slope. He was still a little puzzled as to why he had had an emotional breakdown like that, but what puzzled him further was the result. He never really thought of Honda in that sort of light before, but in the midst of all the flaring emotion - sorrow, heartbreak, anguish, happiness that his friend was there to support him - he was beginning to think twice. Kaiba was a jerk compared to Honda. So why was he blubbering so much over something so trivial?

He shook his head, trying to concentrate on what was happening at present. He was helping Honda back up the slope toward the campsite, their arms across the backs of each others' shoulders. Honda had mildly sprained his ankle when it was twisted around in that rabbit warren, and he couldn't walk on it too well. He had assured Jou that it would be fine after a while if he put ice on it, but Jou wasn't so sure. It was rather swollen and looked painful. He was glad he brought a first aid kit so he would be able to bind it when they got back to camp.

The once-occupied camping area was rather deserted when they returned. Jou saw movement inside Mokuba and Rebecca's tent, however, and figured they must still be here. Kaiba probably told - not asked, told - them to stay and watch their things. Whatever the young teens were doing inside their tent, Jou wasn't sure if he wanted to know. He heard a stifled groan of discomfort next to him, quickly reminding him that Honda was in pain. He shuffled across the camp, past the central fire, and helped Honda into their shared tent.

“Come on, lie down, now. That's it,” Jou said, easing down Honda's stiff body onto his mattress smothered in blankets and pillows. He grabbed one of the pillows and raised Honda's leg up. “Put your leg on this; I'll go and get some ice.”

The brunet watched him go, and threw his head back onto the pillow in defeat. He hadn't realized how crappy he felt after he had fallen, since it had resulted in quite the opposite. What happened back there? He wondered. He kissed me… it was so weird. I've never thought about Jou like that before. The only guy I ever had eyes for in my life was Otogi… Maybe he felt the same about Kaiba. I mean, I guess Jou's attractive…but we've always been just friends. Ugh, my head hurts…

Jou pulled the flap of the tent back and entered with a tea towel full of ice - from one of the chilly bins housing Bakura's alcohol - and crouched down at the foot of Honda's bed. He put the ice around Honda's swollen left ankle and started to dig around inside his overly messy camping bag, searching desperately for the first aid kid that he just knew he had brought with him… somewhere.

“Come on… I know it's in here somewhere…” Jou muttered to himself, thinking out loud.

Honda turned his head and watched Jou struggling. “Don't worry about it, man… This ice is all I need.”

Jou looked over his shoulder and shot him a skeptical glance. “You've been hurt, Honda. I can at least find you some painkillers,” he objected. “…Ah ha! Here it is!”

Honda lay back and submitted, wondering in perplexity why Jou was fussing so much. Did he ever gush and coo this much over Kaiba when they were together? It made Honda curious in an entirely new light. The thought of Jou becoming a lover drifted back into his mind. Would he ever be as intimately rich and daring, as experimental as Otogi once was? Thinking of Otogi made Honda think of Mai, the busty young woman with rich purple eyes and magnificent golden hair. He could see why Otogi had become attracted to her - even Jou was at one stage.

I wonder where they are at the moment, Honda thought. They make a nice couple but... Otogi was mine before her. What did I do wrong? I guess Jou knows how that feels...

He cocked his head up when he felt a movement beneath his ankle at the end of the makeshift bed. Jou was tampering with the swollen limb, trying to bind it with some bandages he had found in the first aid kit. His brows were knotted in concentration, trying desperately to do his best. Honda figured he probably hadn't the faintest clue what he was doing, but at least he was trying. He could make adjustments later.

After binding Honda's swollen ankle, Jou kicked off his own shoes and joined Honda on the mattress, curling up into a foetal position next to him. He didn't know quite how exhausted he had been after the stressful argument with Kaiba resulting in livid tears and an enduring walk, miles into the never-ending forests of the national park. Falling down the hill with Honda landing on top of him didn't ease his cause too much. He felt Honda move closer and put his arm around his body, and the two drifted into a light slumber.

Honda slowly stirred - still smothered with the drowsiness of sleep - to the sounds of teenage giggling. Mokuba and Rebecca; who else could it be? He wrenched his eyes shut and slumped back into his previous relaxed posture against Jou's back, trying to ignore the slow throbbing in his ankle that was slowly coming about. Jou was still out to lunch, he realized, and he didn't want to wake him. He flicked his eyes to his wristwatch. Shit, its three o'clock in the afternoon. I wonder why I slept that long. It's getting cooler… I wonder if anyone's back at camp, yet.

Honda dozed in the silence of the atmosphere, occasionally hearing muffled sounds coming from a few tents down, where he guessed Mokuba and Rebecca were doing… whatever it was they were doing. He didn't care to find out. Instead, he groped his way to the entrance of the tent, stuck his head out, and scanned the area. He saw not a soul in sight. He wasn't sure why, but as he crawled back onto the mattress next to Jounouchi, he felt a chill of apprehension run down his spine from an unknown source. Maybe it was because he felt alone, even though he wasn't. There was just something eerie about being alone in the middle of nowhere. He closed his eyes and laid his head down, not knowing that Jou had been awake and wide-eyed the whole time.

Gone unseen by Honda, who had his eyes closed, a shadowy shape lurked past the tent almost soundlessly. Jounouchi stayed motionless and wide-eyed, his heart thumping in his throat. He was sure it wasn't one of his friends, and nobody was alone anyway - everyone had gone somewhere with someone, not by themselves. This was a single shadow, a single shape, a single… whatever it was. Jou nudged Honda with his elbow, startling the darker-haired boy.

“Honda… did you see that?”

Honda jerked his head up. “See what, Jou? I didn't know you were awake…”

The sound of footsteps could be heard as Honda and Jou watched the shadow through the canvas of the yellow tent. Neither one would admit that they were a little hesitant to go and check it out. Honda decided that it was stupid worrying over something that was probably going to turn out to be utterly ridiculous, so he got up on his good leg and out of the tent. What he saw before him made his blood freeze. He heard footsteps running toward him from somewhere in the forest to his left, and quickly saw Shizuka and Anzu running toward him.

“Stop, you guys! Stay still!”

The two girls stopped, and stood gaping in shock terror at the enormous, full-grown, adult male Asiatic Black Bear standing on his hind legs revealing all his glory, standing almost two metres in height. He stood across the campsite, on the other side of the burned-out fire, sniffing the air and staring in curiosity at the strange humans in his territory. His snout was slick with a coating of blood, and the long guard hairs on his chest were splattered with it, too. Honda had no idea that bears even lived in this region of Japan, let alone whether they were dangerous or not.

The bear stood up, snuffling at the strange, threatening scents of humans in the air, and let out an almost confused sort of growl, and went back down onto all fours. He started away back into the forest, turning once to look back at the terrified teens with glinting dark eyes and blood-tainted white fangs, before padding off into the dense thicket and out of sight. Honda sighed mutedly with relief, glad that the bear was gone. But he knew that it was dangerous to stay with animals like that here. With bears in the forest, who knew what else could be lurking in the shadows?

“Oh Kami, Honda, the most awful, disgusting thing just happened to us!” Shizuka shrieked as she ran to him once the bear had left the camp site.

Jou came out of his tent in hearing his sister's distressed voice. “What happened, sis?”

“We thought it was raining,” Anzu began. “But when I looked at my arm, it wasn't rain, it was blood.”

Shizuka shuddered. “We got up quickly to leave, and then… a… a squirrel without a head fell down from the trees!”

Jou shot a cock-eyed glance. He knew Shizuka wasn't the type to lie about such a peculiar event. “What the fuck?” he finally reacted.

“There must be some rational explanation…” Honda said weakly, not exactly knowing what to say. “Maybe that bear was up in that tree eating the squirrel or something…”

“It was a pine tree, Honda.” Anzu said. “The sorts of pine that grows in these woods only have branches at the very top - there's no way a bear could have climbed up it.”

“It was so gross…” Shizuka said, shivering slightly from the wind blowing through her still-damp hair.

The teenagers' attention turned to the edge of the clearing as one pissed-off Isis stormed angrily into the camp, her eyes red and black eyeliner smudged. Jou rolled his eyes, knowing it was obviously something Kaiba had said or done. Isis wasn't the type to show her emotions so overtly, so it had to be something serious. He thought about going to see what was wrong, but Mokuba and Rebecca interrupted him as they emerged from their tent.

“What's all the commotion, you guys?” Mokuba asked.

“You don't wanna know,” Anzu muttered, retreating into her tent to get changed, followed closely by Shizuka.

Mokuba and his girlfriend looked turned their questioning glances at Honda and Jou. “What happened?”

“If I told you, you wouldn't believe me.” Honda said. “A squirrel with no head fell out of a tree where Shizuka and Anzu were, to start with. I fucked up my ankle; a fucking enormous black bear just came and invaded our camp, and it looks like Isis just had a fight with Kaiba or something…”

Both young teens shot skeptical glances at the elder boys.

“Wow,” Rebecca said. “Weird… Well, we're going to go for a walk and stretch our legs, okay? See you later!” With so much as a wave goodbye, the two were gone.
