Chapter Eight

“What do you mean he `vanished'?” Malik asked, emphasizing his ennui.
“This is serious, Malik! Don't you understand? Yuugi's disappeared. He must have lost us, or tripped up or something!” Yami shrieked, angered by the fact that Malik didn't seem to give a shit about his aibou's disappearance.
“Why don't you try mind-linking him?” Bakura suggested.
“I've tried,” Yami no Yuugi replied in despair. “He's not responding. Some violent force shut off our connection; I think he's unconscious,”
Ryou's face became distorted with concern. “We have to look for him, then! We'll have to go back to camp to tell everyone first. I don't think it's a good idea for us to split up.”
Yami nodded, but Ryou and the others could see his reluctance. “You're right… We must hurry, then! We can't waste any time!”
**~***~**
Ryou, Bakura, Malik and Marik - all hand in hand, save for Yami - reached the camp site heaving hard. The cool air and the hard run back through the forest had stained their cheeks with roses, and they could see their breath against the chilly late-afternoon air. It seemed darker than it really was, because of the shadowy effect of the towering trees. Everybody seemed flustered when they reached camp - especially Otogi - and they weren't sure why, but they knew that they had to tell them about Yuugi's disappearance.
“Everyone!” Ryou shouted. “You have to come quickly - Yuugi's gone missing and Yami can't reach him through his mind link!”
“Yuugi too?!” Otogi shrieked, horrified. “Mai's gone too! I can't find her anywhere! I've been looking for fucking hours!”
Malik could see the distress in the boy's green eyes, which were now bloodshot and swollen. “We'll find them, don't worry.”
“What the hell has happened to them?!” Otogi cried, hysterical.
Kaiba seemed just as concerned. “First Anzu and Shizuka claim that a mangled squirrel - headless - falls down from the treetops, a giant bear comes to our camp, covered in blood, and now Mai and Yuugi have gone missing?”
Otogi heaved a sob, while being comforted by Jou and Honda. He looked up. “This is all Ryou's fault!” He screamed. “If we hadn't come here, then none of this would have happened!”
Ryou opened his mouth to speak, but decided against it. He was hurt by this statement. “Otogi…”
Bakura felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on-end. A menacing growl rumbled in his throat and he stepped out in front of Ryou. “Don't you dare blame Ryou for this, you fucking son of a bitch! How was he to know that this was going to happen? His guess is as good as yours or mine!”
“This shit wouldn't have happened if he hadn't suggested we go away for Halloween! How stupid I was to actually agree with you!”
Bakura, mad with rage, was ready to lunge for the unnerved boy who was stricken with fear and grief. Ryou managed to hold him back just in time, though. “Don't, Bakura. He's not being himself, so don't take it to heart.” He murmured, feeling a lump of guilt rise in his throat.
“It's not your fault, Ryou. It's nobody's fault,” Bakura said, trying to settle himself. He put his arms around the boy - a shade shorter than he - cradling his head against his chest as a tear slid out of Ryou's eye.
“This isn't the time to be fighting, you two!” Yami shrieked. “We have to start looking.”
“Wait…” Kaiba said. Something wasn't quite right, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Even though he knew there were already two people missing, Mokuba and Rebecca still hadn't returned from their day's adventure. A chill of dread ran through him. “Mokuba and Rebecca! They haven't come back ye--”
“Everybody, stay calm,” Isis spoke up - not bothering to let Kaiba finish - her calming voice putting a settling silence over the frenzied crowd of young adults. “I'm sure there is a perfectly rational explanation for all of this -” she was quickly cut short by a horrified look from Jounouchi.
“Then what the hell do you call that?!” The flaxen-haired boy shrieked, pointing to a tree branch that was hung low above Malik and Marik's tent. Intricately designed voodoo dolls of each individual there, was suspended from the branch by a string wrapped around its neck. Pins and gashes covered every one of the dolls, but the one that imitated Mai was especially distorted.
Trembling, Otogi walked up to the line of hanging dolls and looked at them. “Mai… great Kami, please, please be okay…”
“Who in their right mind would do this sort of thing?” Honda questioned. He clung close to Jou, leaning his weight on his sound ankle.
“I don't think this person is in their right mind, somehow.” Kaiba noted, sliding his hands into his coat pockets.
“We need a plan of attack,” Malik said. “Whoever this fucker is wants something, is insane, and we need more help than this. Fucking cell phones! We can't even call the cops!”
“We're in the middle of nowhere, anyway!” Shizuka said. “They wouldn't even know where we are. Someone needs to drive to the closest town!”
“Which is also, miles away,” Otogi sobbed. “We don't even know what direction the closest town is!”
“We have to do something before it gets dark,” Jou said. “And there ain't no way in hell I'm staying another night here, I'm sorry.”
“Not with some psycho out there,” Honda agreed.
Yami rubbed his temples. “What are we going to do?”
Something in Malik's head clicked. “The park rangers!” He shouted. “They can help us! And the concentration camp - it has a radio!”
“We may be able to get some reception up there too, since it's on a hill above all the trees,” Ryou said, remembering the location. “You're a genius, Malik!”
“A concentration camp? Is that what the mysterious historical place really is?” Anzu asked in puzzlement.
“Yes,” Yami answered for her. “But we don't have time for this now; we have to find the others!”
**~***~**
The sky was darkening, and time was not on their side. The group of teens had quickly packed up their things and shoved it all into their cars. Otogi and Jou had ripped down the superstitious dolls and had burnt them in the fire. They decided on leaving the fire burning, as the smoke could act as a signal to any passing aircrafts that might happen to see it. They had decided to all stick together - separating was a ludicrous idea at this point. The risk of losing any other people was far too high as it was.
“Come on! We have to get there faster!” Otogi shrieked in desperation.
A look of guilt passed Honda's features. “Sorry Otogi, I really don't mean to slow us down… But my ankle…”
“Go on ahead without us, Otogi. We'll catch up.” Jounouchi suggested, still supporting Honda and helping him along.
“No,” a stern voice sounded so everybody could hear. “We already said we aren't going to separate, and we won't!” Kaiba said, glaring at Jou in particular.
Jou merely glared back. “Just a suggestion…” he muttered under his breath.
“Calm the fuck down, Otogi.” Malik said while walking. “Mai and the others will be fine. There's got to be some sort of explanation.”
“Then what about the voodoo dolls? And the squirrel? And that fucking bear?! Explain that, Malik!” Otogi screamed, feeling like he was going out of his mind.
Shizuka frowned and bit her lip, and departed Anzu's side to join Otogi. “It's alright, Ryuuji. We're almost there, and once we get there, we can call for help. Everything will be alright.” She said in an attempt to calm him.
Anzu discreetly scowled in jealousy at the two as Otogi blubbered all over Shizuka's shoulder, muttering sobs and putting himself on a guilt trip. “I shouldn't have let her go off by herself!” he said.
A chilling wind blew through the trees and settled amongst the group of panicked, hysterical teenagers, freezing them to the bone. Otogi had settled down somewhat, walking absently ahead of the rest, arms folded across his chest. The others walked briskly behind him, heads bowed and arms wrapped around themselves, looking almost like a cult moving silently through a mosque. It was only then that a cry of terror made them automatically look up, hearts thudding and feet gaining speed.
There, at the side of the leaf-covered path, was a clump of now-dull blonde, wavy hair, knotty and bloody. Otogi knew immediately that it was Mai's. “This guy really is fucking sick!” he shouted to anyone listening.
“Come on, Otogi. Don't look at it.” Kaiba urged, forcing the group to keep moving. “We don't have much time left until it gets dark.”
Kaiba knew he was right, and he also knew that if he didn't take control of this situation, then nobody would. He had always been a leader, and had never had problems in making fateful decisions. He knew what was best - most of the time - , knew how to boss people around into doing as he said, and overall, make people kiss his ass. The only thing that bugged him was if his employees did so. That's all beside the point, though. Keeping everyone calm and in control was what he needed to focus on at the moment, unnerved as he may feel.
“Here we are,” Ryou said in an edgy manner as the group came to the bottom of the daunting slope of which the prison sat on top.
“Let's go then!” Otogi shrieked, bolting toward the stone steps that lead to the top.
Everybody rushed after him, desperately hoping to find help at the top. Honda and Jou helplessly hobbled to the top after the rest, catching up surprisingly quickly. Everyone, including Kaiba, could hear their hearts throbbing in their ears as cell-phones came out of pockets to check for reception. Looking in dismay, they put them away, feeling utterly defeated.
“Fuck!” Malik spat. “Now what?!”
“The park rangers have to be around here somewhere,” Ryou said. “They were up here earlier today! Well, one of them was, anyway.”
“Maybe they're inside the building,” Malik said, looking back up toward the sheer cliff wall where the ancient stone building was. “I'm going to go and check; who's coming?”
“We all will,” Kaiba interjected.
Making their way up to the complex, Marik shunted open the door, and the sight before them couldn't have been more horrifying. There, lying naked on a cold stone bench in the centre of the room, was Mai, bound with ropes and tape over her mouth. Between her legs, a masked figure - male, by the look of it - was thrusting into her - raping her - repeatedly. Blood splattered between her thighs and deep cuts covered her body from head to toe. A bald patch on her head could be seen from where her hair had been violently ripped out. The pale-faced spectators could see - due to her eyes rolling to the back of her head - that Mai was dangerously slipping in and out of consciousness.
Anzu was the first to scream, quickly followed by Shizuka passing out cold on the ground next to her. The offending culprit immediately looked up from his activity and a cold glare could be seen in his stone blue eyes. Kaiba and the others were frozen to the spot, unable to move, unable to speak, unable to breathe. Jounouchi immediately started to break down into a violent coughing fit, wheezing, struggling for air. Honda and Kaiba knew that he had asthma, but whether he had his inhaler on him was another thing…
“What the fuck do you think you're doing, you twisted motherfucker?!” Otogi finally found his voice and screamed until his throat went dry, launching himself at the man who Mai had fell victim to.
One word was all it took to click in Kaiba's head. Mokuba.
“Mokuba!” he shrieked, and ran inside. “Mokuba, are you alright?!”
“Wait, Kaiba!” Yami said, pushing through the crowd. “I'm coming with you! Yuugi must be in there, too!”
Kaiba nodded and let Yami follow him in. The two young men cringed as they walked past Mai's now-unconscious body, and two passed-out bodies of park rangers on the floor. As much as they wanted to help them, Yami and Kaiba were out to find their loved ones to make sure they were safe first. What they were about to find came as a raw shock, to put it lightly. There, hanging by their wrists inside a barred chamber, was Mokuba, Yuugi and Rebecca, bloody trails and bruises smothering their naked bodies. They, too, were unconscious, severely beaten, and from the look of it, Kaiba could tell that Rebecca had also been raped.
“Sweet Mother of Ra…” Yami no Yuugi whispered, rushing into the cell.
“Great Kami…Who the hell is this guy? Who would do this sort of thing?” Kaiba muttered as he jogged in after him, untying the ropes that had them suspended. Gently he laid Mokuba and Rebecca down on the ground, and checked their vital signs. They were alright, but if they didn't warm up they would get chilled and get hypothermia. Kaiba searched the room frantically for their clothing, and found them.
“You little son of a bitch, you think you can ruin my plans like this? Just when I was getting so far?” hissed a vaguely familiar voice from outside.
“What plans?!” Otogi cried in a strangled grasp as the offender had a tight grip on his throat.
“Fucking asshole! Get off of him!” Bakura could also be heard in the scene.
“You're outnumbered, pal, just give it up already!” Marik, now, too.
“If it weren't for her, none of us would be in this situation!” the mysterious delinquent yelled, pointing to Mai's naked, bloody form on the stone table. “She said she loved me! She did! And I loved her just as much. And then you, you little bastard! You had to come along and fuck everything up! You took her from me! You stole her!” he shouted, pointing now at Otogi.
“What the hell have I got to do with this? Sadistic fuck! If you `love' her so much, why the fuck would you do something like this?!” came Otogi's defensive reply.
Kaiba, first checking to make sure that Mokuba and Rebecca were safe, rounded the corner silently and stealthily, to see what was going on outside. From this view, he could see that the masked man had a gun in a pouch on his belt, and was discreetly reaching for it. A rush of dread chilled him to the bone, knowing that this man, whoever he was, was not afraid to kill someone if he had to. Look at the damage he had done already. Kaiba looked around him, searching desperately for a plan, processing in his mind a plot that might just work.
Suddenly he caught eyes with Bakura and put his fingers to his lips. Receiving an understanding nod from the white-haired thief, he got down on his hands and knees and crawled across the floor to where the park rangers still lay unconscious, but breathing. Just keep him distracted… Kaiba thought. I only need a few moments and that fucker will be on his ass…
As Bakura and Marik continued the argument, throwing insults as well as punches aimed at the criminal, Kaiba slid across the floor and grabbed one of the rangers' rifles… or what he thought was a rifle. Hmm, imagine that. It's a tranquilizer gun. Just what I need… that way I don't have to kill the bastard, although it would be enjoyable… Readying the gun as silently as he could, he took aim at the man's neck, and as soon as he got a good aim, he fired…
“Holy fucking shit! What the hell was that…” the culprit's voice slurred as he finally fell unconscious on the ground, out cold. A huge surge of relief filled Kaiba's system. With a tranquilizer as strong as that, he could be out for as long as six hours… he mused, popping out one of the tranquilizing darts and having a look.
Outside, Anzu was nursing a blubbering, light-headed Shizuka, hysterical and in tears from having woken up from her faint. Jou was sucking deeply on his inhaler with Honda at his side, who was desperately trying to keep him calm. Otogi, however, was more hysterical from rage and disorientation to notice anything; his main target was the masked offender. He had never been more determined to find out anything in his life, and so ripped the balaclava off of the man's head.
“Bandit Keith Howard?!” Ryou and Otogi shrieked in unison, utterly bewildered.
“He's the American champion!” Malik cried. Though he had never met the man, he had heard of him.
Kaiba finally emerged from the musty stone building with Mokuba and Rebecca, now dressed, at his side. They were shaking and crying uncontrollably, and Rebecca could hardly stand, let alone walk. They were both, however, alive and breathing, and Kaiba could never have been more relieved. He looked down to see the unconscious man on his back, head lulled to one side. He frowned in surprise and shock when he noticed it was indeed Bandit Keith Howard from the Duelist Kingdom Tournament. Now that he thought about it, he wasn't all that surprised. Keith seemed like someone who would do something like this if pushed and prodded enough.
Yami walked past with Yuugi in his arms, comforting the whimpering boy with kisses and gentle words of reassurance. Anzu and Shizuka had finally regained composure enough to see to Mai, and make sure that her heart was still beating and her breathing even. They untied her binds and gently peeled the tape off of her mouth. Her wounds were oozing and bleeding, gradually starting to scab, but she was far from becoming emotionally stable ever again. Once she regained steady consciousness, she couldn't stop screaming.
**~***~**
“They shouldn't be long, now.”
Kaiba merely grunted and nodded his reply at the park ranger, sending him off. Once the park rangers had regained consciousness, the group had walked back down to where their vehicles were parked and had used the rangers' radios to radio through to the police and to KaibaCorp. Marik and Bakura volunteered to carry Keith's unconscious body back down to the camp site and were keeping an eye on him. They had bound his wrists and ankles with rope in case he woke up, but they doubted it would be any time before the armed forces arrived.
The authorities at KaibaCorp had located them via a satellite connection, and had sent out helicopters to find them. Jou and Honda had started a fire so that the smoke could be used as a signal. The teens were huddled around the fire, wrapped in blankets and trying to keep warm. Jou, Honda, Shizuka and Anzu were clustered in a bunch, quietly talking to and comforting each other. Mokuba was asleep, slumped in Kaiba's lap, and Isis was gently comforting Rebecca.
Malik and Ryou were keeping Bakura and Marik company, watching the comatose asshole that had started all this torment. More than anything they just wanted to get out of there, get home, and watch Keith rot to his long awaited death behind bars or inside four padded walls. They all did wonder, though, why Keith had done this, and why he had especially targeted Mai. Why did he abduct her, Yuugi, Mokuba and Rebecca? Did he want the others to come and find him? What connection did he have with Mai, and, ultimately why did he do what he did?
Resting her head against Otogi's shoulder, Mai appeared in an absent, semi-catatonic state. Dancing red flames flickered in her glassy, faraway eyes, and though she chose to remain silent, she was screaming on the inside. She knew that, after this, nothing could be the same again. She owed everybody an explanation, but right now, she wasn't capable of it. She was verging on the edge of her sanity, visions of the raping flashing into her mind every two seconds. After experiencing this type of trauma, nobody would be the same ever again, and they had her to thank for it. A silent tear dribbled from her eye, knowing that she could never repair the damage that had ensued.
