Chapter Nine

“In headline news today, a brutal abduction and rape case was reported to the Domino Police department last night when a group of approximately fourteen young men and women - the notorious Mr. Kaiba Seto being among them - went camping in Ayame National Park over the Halloween weekend. At least four of the youths were reportedly kidnapped from the forest surrounding their camp site and held hostage by a man who has requested name suppression. It is believed that the victims suffered physical and sexual abuse by the offender, who is being now held in custody. We switch now to our case reporter Umi Hakashimi. Umi, what else can you tell us?”

“Well Suzuka, I'm standing outside the Domino Central Police Department, and as you can see here, the place is teeming with people - authorities, civilians, lawyers, doctors, you name it! It is believed that the accused - and also a few of the victims - are inside being questioned by the officers attending this case. Not a lot is known as yet, but I have with me Detective Sergeant Akino. Detective, is there anything you would like to add?”

“All I can say about this case at the time being is that it is one of the ugliest I've seen in Domino in the last decade… No human should ever have to have undergone what the accused has done. Many of the young kids involved will need counseling for years to come. We will of course keep the media updated when anything new arises.”

“Thank you, detective, for your time. Back to you, Suzuka.”

Malik switched off the television. What had happened over the past couple of days is something he wished never to experience again. Thankfully he hadn't been one of the four that Bandit Keith had abducted, but he was sure he would need to undergo a few sessions of counseling, at least. In the past 24 hours, Ryou had been the most hysterical out of the four boys; Bakura trying desperately to calm him down and tell him that nothing was his fault.

After several hours of questioning at the police station, the Ishtars and Bakuras were allowed to go free. Isis stayed with Kaiba a little while longer, as the tabloids had immediately flocked to him, asking for an interview. Of course it was only expected to be on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow morning. Kaiba had been quite the hero, somewhat, after all. Having shot Bandit Keith with the tranquilizer gun, he had, in a way, saved them all from more carnage ensuing. The whole situation made Malik sick to the stomach. His mind once again drifted back to a few hours earlier, down at the police station…

“Will Mr. Malik Ishtar please come forward?”

Malik stood up from the waiting room as Anzu shakily left the questioning room. He stepped in and closed the door behind him, where a middle-aged detective dressed in a drab grey pinstriped suit sat at a table with nothing but a pen and paper on it. He took a seat opposite him.

“Mr. Ishtar, my name is Senior Detective Akino. May I call you Malik?”

“Sure,” Malik replied, leaning back in his chair, crossing his ankles.

“Malik, I need to know a little bit about you before you begin. What is your full name?” Akino began.

“Malik Ishtar.”

“And your date of birth?”

“December 23rd 1986,”

“And your ethnicity?”

“Egyptian.”

“I thought I picked up an accent. What's your first language?” Akino asked, curious.

“I'm multilingual.”

“Not just bilingual? What other languages can you speak, Malik?”

Malik counted in his head. “Japanese, Arabic, French and I can hold conversations in Greek and English…”

“That's impressive… How long have you been living in Japan, now?”

Malik thought back. He arrived when he was fifteen and was turning eighteen in a couple of months. “Around about three years now, I guess.”

“So, in the event of you having to attend a court hearing as a witness, would you need a translator?”

Malik frowned. He didn't like to be taken for an idiot. “Does it appear like I would need a fucking translator? Isn't it rather obvious that I'm fluent in Japanese?”

Akino nodded. “Please don't lose your temper, Malik. We have a lot to get through, yet.”

Malik rolled his eyes. He'd rather be anywhere but here.

“Your place of birth?”

Malik blushed involuntarily. He didn't want to tell the detective that he had been born in an underground city where he remained for the following ten years of his life without seeing the outside world. So he lied. “Cairo, Egypt.”

“Do you have any siblings?”

“Yeah, Isis and Rishid Ishtar.”

“Do you, or have you had any sexual partners in the past year? And if so, how many?”

“How is that relevant?” Malik frowned.

“Please, just for your file information.”

“I have one serious partner at the moment, but have been with probably… four, in the past year.”

Akino continued writing. “And lastly, do you have anyone who you might consider a serious enemy? A threat to your personal wellbeing?”

Malik shrugged. “Not anymore.”

Akino creased an eyebrow. “What do you mean by that?”

Malik deadpanned. “Do you even have the faintest clue of who I am?”

“Well, I know that you kids had something to do with the duel monster tournament held a couple years back, but…”

“I almost won it!” Malik shrieked, rising from his chair. “I came second to Yuugi no Yami - our match is one of the most famous in the history of dueling; I almost had all three God cards for myself so I could be crowned King of Games and eventually the world!”

Akino exhaled loudly through his nose. “Please be seated, Mr. Ishtar. Let's go back to the point, now.” He said. “Since trying to claim world domination, do you still have enemies?”

Malik didn't like the note of sarcasm in Akino's voice. “Let's just say we all kissed and made up - grudgingly.”

“Alright, that's fine.” Akino replied. “Malik, I would like you to describe, from the day that you left to go camping, until now, in your own words, the events that occurred.” Akino said, grasping his pen.

“Alright, well…” Malik looked down, trying to think. The haze in his head was thick. “Everybody arrived at my place sometime before noon,” he said.

“By `everybody', who do you mean?”

“My friends, everyone that came camping with us.”

“Continue,”

“From there, we left. Ryou was driving in front, as he was the only one that apparently knew where we were going. He wanted it to be a surprise for everyone. He's funny like that… But it turned out that we had taken a wrong turn and ended up in the wrong place anyway.” Malik said, suppressing a chuckle. “So after about three and a half hours' driving, we found a sign that said `historical site, 5km' and we turned off into a side road that led to it, thinking that we had found our camp site.”

Akino scribbled madly in shorthand while Malik was talking. “Were there any other indications that you had reached the supposedly right place?”

“No… not really. When we came to the clearing there was a pile of charred logs that were still smoking. It seemed like someone had been burning a fire there not long before we arrived.” Malik replied, straining to remember.

“And what happened then?”

“I remember Ryou shouted that we must be in the right place if someone else was camping here, too. So we parked up the cars and started unpacking our gear.”

“What did you do after you finished setting up your things?”

“I remember Bakura and Marik went off to chop down some firewood,”

“Who, now?”

Malik blushed. “Uh… Marik… my boyfriend, and Bakura… Ryou's boyfriend.”

Akino cocked an eyebrow. “You are… gay?”

“Isn't that an irrelevant question?” Malik retorted.

“Yes, my apologies,” Akino muttered, flushing. “Do continue, please.”

“So they went to chop down some trees for firewood, and then I remember Shizuka Kawai and Anzu Mazaki - the girl you interviewed before me - went to get some fresh water.”

“Was there anything out of the ordinary that happened on your first night there, Malik?” Akino asked.

Malik remembered. “Yeah… just before I went to bed. I went to go to the toilet behind some trees; it was really dark, but I remember seeing something - someone, perhaps - in the darkness. I thought it was just a boulder or a weird shaped bush, but then it moved slightly - and it was a really still night, no wind at all. It could have been a person wearing some sort of hooded cloak.”

“Interesting… Miss. Mazaki said she witnessed a similar thing while she was fetching water, as you say. Coincidental? I think not.”

A shiver ran down Malik's spine. “So what I saw wasn't a tree or a rock?”

“A hooded cloak was found with Mr. Howard's DNA on it, at the scene.” Akino said. “You do the math.”

Malik felt gooseflesh rise on his arms. “Do I continue?”

“Please,”

“The next morning, we had breakfast, and then Ryou, Bakura, Marik and I set off to go and find the historical site, which turned out as being the abandoned Umeko Concentration Camp. We weren't entirely sure where it was but followed the general direction that we assumed it was in, anyway.”

“Where were the others when you four went off?”

Malik stroked his chin. “Well, Yuugi and his… friend… Yami, they caught up to us and came with us. I also remember Shizuka and Anzu went off to go swimming together, because they were still in their bikinis when we got back to camp, and their hair was wet. I'm not really sure where the others went… We all left before anyone else.”

Akino nodded, still writing. “Alright,” he said quietly. “Now, I want you to describe to me what the abandoned concentration camp looked like from the outside in, when you first saw it. What or who was inside?”

“There was no-one inside,” Malik said. “But I do remember, as we were heading back to camp, one of the park rangers was emptying the donation box. He was the only other person besides us that I remember seeing up there.”

“And what about outside? Any fresh footprints or other signs that someone, possibly not the park rangers, had been there?”

Malik shook his head. “I don't really pay much attention to detail… But when we went inside there were a whole lot of random objects on the counter, like a really ancient old radio, gardening tools, old newspapers… It seemed like nobody had been there for years.”

Still writing, Akino said, “Describe the situation you came back to when you returned to your campsite,”

“Well, on our way back, we were just talking, not really worried about anything - we had no reason to be. And then Yami came rushing up to us screaming that Yuugi had disappeared. Yuugi is, like, scared of everything. And I thought Yami was just having us on… but it turned out that he really had disappeared - without a trace. That's when I started to get concerned.”

“What happened next?”

“Well, Ryou convinced Yami to come back to camp with us, so we could tell the others and start a search party. But when we got back, it seemed that Yuugi wasn't the only one that had disappeared. Mai, Mokuba and Rebecca had also vanished. Otogi - that's Mai's boyfriend - was hysterical. We were all discussing what to do when Jounouchi noticed these weird dolls hanging from a tree branch. They all seemed to imitate all of us - like voodoo dolls. It was creepy… real creepy.” Malik shuddered in remembering. “It made us realise that whoever was doing this had seen or known us enough to do something like that.”

“Keep going, Malik, you're doing great.” Akino said, noticing how discouraged Malik was becoming in remembering.

“My sister eventually managed to calm everyone down a little so we could decide what to do. Kaiba said that we should all stay together as a group, pack up our things and then start looking for them, since we couldn't get reception on our cell-phones to call the police. We started heading back up to the concentration camp to see if we could get any signal from above the trees.”

“Then what happened?”

“We still couldn't get any reception. Then we thought of the park rangers - we had seen one of them up at the camp complex earlier that day, and he had a radio, so we went up to see if we could find him… And that's when we found…when we found…” Malik's chest tightened, trying desperately to restrain the sorrow that was building inside.

“I understand how hard this must be, Malik… But we need to know what happened, and you kids are the only ones who can help us solve the case.” Akino said. “Trust me, you're doing very well, considering some of the others that I've already interviewed today.”

Malik looked up, letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding. “Like who?”

“Mr. Otogi, for example, probably wasn't in the best state of mind to have been interviewed quite so soon. And Mr. Bakura was very self-blaming about it all. Miss. Kawai was very tearful.”

Malik nodded. “I can understand that…” then he continued. “What we found, well… it's not something that any of us will forget easily. Mai Kujaku was being raped by Keith on this table thing in the centre of the room… he had a balaclava on at the time. She was naked and also had cuts and abrasions all over her body. Otogi launched himself at Keith and starting hitting him, while Kaiba and Yami ran through to the back cells and found Mokuba, Yuugi and Rebecca. They were also naked, badly beaten and bound by their wrists, hanging by a rope from the ceiling.”

“Tell me how you managed to get Mr. Howard unconscious and back to your camp site, please.” Akino said.

“Well… Otogi, Bakura and Marik were fighting with him, punching him and whatnot, when Kaiba found a tranquilizer gun - I guess they were used in the case of wild animal attacks - from one of the park rangers who had passed out on the floor… He used that on Keith, who passed out a few seconds later.”

“I see,”

“It was a case of self-defense. If it hadn't had been for Kaiba… I don't know what would have happened. Keith had a gun; he could have killed any one of us, easily.” Malik replied.

“I see, I see.” Akino said. “What happened after he had fallen unconscious?”

“We went to help the others,” Malik said. “Anzu, Shizuka and Otogi went to help Mai,”

“And what did they do? What sort of state was Mai in when they saw to her?”

Malik looked at the ground. “She was in pretty bad shape…worse than anyone else. She was almost unrecognizable by the time we got to her - her face was badly bruised and swollen. She had cuts all over her body that Shizuka tried to help clean up by ripping off the hem of her dress and wrapping it around the wounds that were still bleeding. She was also bleeding bright red blood from…” Malik didn't want to finish.

Akino nodded. “What about the other people that Mr. Howard assaulted?”

“I don't know much about what happened to them. Mokuba and Rebecca were in the same cell when Kaiba found them…and Yuugi was in the one over from them. I overheard Kaiba giving his statement to the police.”

“What did you hear?” Akino asked.

“Well… it was apparent that Rebecca had been raped, the way she was carrying on about how she didn't want anyone to come near her. All three of them were naked with bad cuts all over them.”

Akino was silent, nodding while writing down Malik's statements. Malik decided now might be a good time to ask something. “Do you…know how they're doing?”

Akino looked up. “I'm not really supposed to reveal confidential information,”

“But they're my friends!” Malik retaliated. “Don't I have a right to know? I'm just as involved in this case as everyone else.”

“Look, kid,” Akino stopped writing for a moment. “All I know at this stage is that Miss. Kujaku will be transferred from Domino Public Hospital to a psychiatric ward once she has fully physically recovered.”

“Why?”

“She has major psychological trauma,” Akino said. “They think it may be a severe case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She also had to have cosmetic surgery to repair the broken bones in her face, a blood transfusion, and cosmetic surgery to her inner genital area, which was also damaged by the raping.”

Malik cringed. “Is she going to be okay?”

“Nobody knows, yet. It's too early to tell.”

“What about the other three?”

Akino shrugged. “Physically, I think they're fine. They had their wounds seen to and were discharged the same day, but they will indeed need counseling for some time, yet.”

“They won't put her in the same psychiatric hospital as the one she used to work at, would they?”

“No,” Akino replied. “That's the irony of this case. Obviously, Mr. Howard knew Miss. Kujaku and was out to get her in some way or another. We have yet to interview staff members from the hospital that knew her while she worked there.”

“What about people who associated with Keith?”

Akino shook his head. “He's American; he doesn't have many close Japanese connections. His citizenship to Japan hasn't even been approved yet. If we can trace his address we may be able to talk to his neighbours, see if they know much about him.”

“Early days yet, huh?”

“Yes, very early days.”

Malik looked at the ground again. “Is that all?”

“For now,” Akino replied. “You've been a great help, Malik. Thank you for your time.”

Malik shrugged as he stood up. “I don't know how I was of any help.”

“Any information given is bound to help us in some way or another.” Akino said, showing Malik the door.

“What happens now?” Malik asked, searching for his cigarettes.

“We will be in contact, in due course.” Akino replied. “We still need to get all the facts before we can take action with Mr. Howard.”

“The guy's an insane, psychotic and sadistic bastard,” Malik muttered.

Akino nodded. “It is assumed that he will need to undergo a psychoanalysis test before we can proceed.”

“One more thing,” Malik said before heading toward the exit. “How did Keith - who knew the majority of all of us - know we were going to that exact place? We didn't realise we had ended up in the wrong place until we got there.”

“We have yet to discover that, Malik. It may be a long time in the making until we can put all the pieces together.” Akino replied, putting his hands in his pockets.

Malik looked at his watch. “I'll be waiting to hear more.”

“As we all will, Malik. Goodbye, now.”

Akino left with a swift turn on the heel, straightening his tie as he left. Malik watched the man in the grey suit walk away until he was out of sight. Right now, he needed to go home. He needed a cigarette, a stiff drink, anything to calm his quaking nerves. Marik and Bakura were the next to be interviewed - it seemed Akino had a long night of asking the same questions over and over again awaiting him. Malik stepped out into the cool, damp autumn night of downtown Domino. Thankfully the bustling parade of journalists and reporters had left since he had arrived; that was the absolute last thing he could be bothered to deal with right now. Lighting up a cigarette, Malik headed toward his motorbike, not much looking forward to the long, sleepless night that lay ahead.

JoeysGal: O.O… and so the plot thickens… MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!
