Seto awoke to a strange smell. He couldn't quite place what it was, but whatever it was, it wasn't particularly appetizing. At the moment, he was too hungry to care. So even if whatever it was smelled rancid, he knew he'd eat it if he got the chance. Slowly, he opened his eyes, letting them adjust.

He couldn't help but recoil. The first thing he saw was Pegasus. What was the man doing there? He sat on a chair next to Seto, with a worried look etched plainly on his face. Pegasus worried? It made him want to laugh. Pegasus wasn't worried about him. He was just planning on using him somehow. Pegasus was just like every other business man Seto had ever met. So, that worry on his face was just an act in Seto's mind. Maximillion Pegasus couldn't be worried about him.

“I'm glad you're awake. You gave me quite a scare for a while there, Kaiba-boy.” He reached out and tenderly brushed the teen's cheek. He smiled when Seto didn't pull away. “I'll assume you're hungry now.”

Seto tried to speak. Tried to tell the older man that he wasn't hungry. He was too weak yet. He managed to rasp out, “Pegasus, I'm not...” Before his voice quit on him.

Pegasus pulled the hand away. He felt frustrated. Seto was calling him by his last name again. He hated it, but it was fine for now. At least the angry teen was trying to be civilized. Then again, Seto was too weak to be anything but pleasant.

“Don't try to talk yet. You're still very weak from the stupid stunt you tried to pull.” He reached under his chair. He came back with a covered bowl. Seto winced. It seemed the smell had come from that. Pegasus grinned again. “But we'll fix that up soon enough.”

He heard a weak murmur. “Don't tell me what to do, Pegasus.” The white haired man laughed. Seto felt the men's hand twine into his own hair. It felt nice. So gentle and protective. Not like...Not like...him. The teen shut the feelings off.

Yet the man continued. “You are a very stubborn boy, Seto. But that makes me like you even more.” The admission was a quiet one, but Seto was too close to miss it. He was sure Seto had heard, but the boy's face remained impassive.

Seto fought not to show anything. He had most definitely heard Pegasus tell him he liked him. The teen didn't know what to do with that information. No one was ever this nice to him. He didn't know if he returned that liking, and he was in no condition to freak out and run like hell. He had only one option. Not feel at all. “What is it?” He demanded, weakly pointing at the bowl.

“It's supposed to be soup.” Pegasus suggested, noticing the not so subtle dodge. It was a guess. He didn't know what it was either.

“I don't eat anything I can't identify.” Seto remarked dryly.

Pegasus produced a spoon. “It's your fault you know. As much as I enjoy your stubborn streak, you should have done what I said. We'd both be a lot happier for it. Now open up.” He held out the concoction.

He growled in frustration, when Seto avoided the spoon. He kept his mouth firmly shut after announcing. “I won't repeat myself again. I'm not eating.” Then he just glared, those defiant blue eyes boring holes into Pegasus.

“I've had just about enough of this Seto! Right now, I own you! You will obey me!“ Pegasus thundered. He saw those expressive eyes harden. Then he realized his faux pas. At that moment, he had sounded like the man who had hurt his Seto so badly. Pegasus wanted to heal Seto, to save him. All he seemed to be doing thus far was further the damage .

The boy looked at him with confusion when he felt long elegant fingers twine around his own. Pegasus had taken a hold of his hand. There seemed to be tears in his visible eye. “Oh, Seto. I'm sorry I yelled. I didn't mean any of that. But you have to do this for me. Just this one little thing, and I'll leave you alone, okay?”

Pegasus felt a pleasant shiver when he felt Seto squeeze back. The grip was surprisingly strong for the condition the boy was in. Then slowly, the boy smiled. It looked awkward on his face, like he hadn't smiled before. The smiled only lasted a second, but it was impossible to miss.

“If it's as terrible as it smells, I swear to God I'll make you pay.” Seto muttered. He meant every word.

“You have a deal.” Pegasus re-offered the spoon. Then almost at random, he asked. “Do you still play chess, Kaiba-boy?”

Seto shook his head. “Not as much as I used too. I'm always so busy with other things, like running Kaiba Corp, and plotting your downfall and all. Why?” Pegasus laughed. Seto found he liked the sound. He liked it when he got Pegasus to laugh, even if it wasn't intentional.

“Why? Well, I used to be pretty good myself, back in the stone ages. I'd love to see if I've still got it.” Actually, there was an ulterior motive. If he was still as skilled at the game as he used to be, Pegasus was sure the game would drag on for hours. Those were hours that he could spend in blissful peace, close to his Seto. Hours he could use to get the boy to open up to him.

Seto reached over and whapped him weakly on the head. “You're not that old. And from the look of things, you most definitely still got it.” Then realizing the double entendre, Seto graced Pegasus with a delicate blush. Inside, he was in turmoil. He should hate Pegasus for keeping him here like this. He should want to kill them man in numerous, violent, sadistic ways. Not make slightly perverted comments and play chess with him. Most of all, Seto knew he shouldn't be feeling the things he was starting to feel for the man. Feelings, he was only beginning to realize he had.

He didn't really notice those feelings until Pegasus had left the room to get the chessboard. Without the man's presence, the room felt cold, and empty. Lonely. So did his heart, though he tried very hard to shove that particular feeling down. No. This wasn't love. He couldn't afford to love anything. Love just got him hurt. This was just some physiological disorder, like the Helsinki complex, where people fell in love with their kidnappers. That was it. He could get over it.

The ache in his chest went away when the white haired man returned. “That was quick.” He stated, more coldly than he had intended. But coldness his best defense against getting hurt. Apathy kept him safe.

“You'd be surprised at how fast I can be, Kaiba-boy.” Pegasus plopped in the chair next to his bed. He placed the board between them, and held out two pawns in his fists.

“Nothing surprised me anymore.” Pegasus flinched at the tone. He felt defeated already. He was losing the boy so soon after he had got him talking. But then, to his great delight, Seto kept going. “You can be white if you want.”

That made him blink. Why was Seto passing up a chance to go first? That wasn't the kind of thing someone who had to win would do. “Seto.” He muttered, quietly. Reverently. He could see his angel fighting his nature to chose. The boy was trying. Even he could see that.

“What?” He demanded, hotly. “Can't I feel like being charitable once in a while? You don't have to stare at me like I just said the world's coming to an end.”

Pegasus apologized. Inside he was smiling. His angel was going to be just fine. He was even getting back to normal. That was good, in a way. The energetic outburst proved that his Seto was going to recover from starvation. Feeling triumphant, he made the first move, moving his knight. Then he waited.

His angel stared at the board. His face was already starting to take on the look of intense concentration. He reached towards a peace and stopped. Pegasus was completely enthralled by Seto's movements. He was playing as he had seen that one time, when Seto had been a child. The teen even began to chew on his knuckle in thought.

“Hey, Kaiba-boy, when did you say the last time you played was?” He asked, playfully. “Honestly. You must be very rusty indeed, if you're having problems with an opening move.”

The chestnut haired teen looked up. His bangs almost completely hid his eyes. It was a very sexy look. He didn't seem to care. Slowly, deliberately, he moved a single pawn. Then he announced. “I will win in five moves.”

Pegasus shook his head. “Aren't you celebrating a little early Kaiba-boy? There is no way to know that will happen.”

“Care to make a bet on that?” Seto stated coldly.

“A wager?” Pegasus wasn't smiling anymore. A wager at chess is what had kept Seto and his brother together. A bet over chess had cost Seto his humanity and robbed him of his innocence. “Sorry, Kaiba-boy. I'm not a betting man.” Pegasus made his second move. It was followed by silence.

Seto was thinking again. Pegasus didn't think he'd ever get enough of watching the teen think. Because it proved that the boy wasn't just a pretty face and a great body. He had a brain in there as well. It was the whole package that made his angel who he was.

Four moves later, Pegasus found himself in checkmate. Seto smiled up at him. It was a smug, arrogant smile, but Pegasus chose to ignore that. His angel was smiling at him. That's all that really mattered. “Another game,” he suggested.

Seto led with the exact same knight he had. This amused Pegasus. He knew if he copied what Seto had just done the boy would lose. He moved the pawn. The teen glanced at the board. Then he shook his head. “I'll win again.” Those azure eyes danced around the board. Pegasus knew what the teen was doing now. The reason Seto was so good at this game was because he was thinking at least three or four moves down the line. “In three moves.”

Pegasus started at the board trying to see how that could be. He couldn't. Not for the life of him. He made a big show of thinking of how the boy could accomplish what he had just declared. In reality, he was just stalling for time. He could tell his angel was getting sleepy. He didn't blame the boy. He was weak from starvation. And to top it all off, Pegasus knew his nights were plagued with nightmares.

He finally forced himself to make a move, and was again amazed by Seto's brilliance. Even half asleep, the boy dominated the board. Seto handed him defeat after defeat. Games never seemed to make it past the ten-move mark

Pegasus stood and shut the board quietly. He had to. His angel was almost asleep. His eyes had drifted shut and his breathing had slowed. Pegasus couldn't help but reach out and touch his Seto once more. He brushed the boy's hair away from his forehead, lovingly. “Everyone is right about you Seto. You are a genius. No wonder Mokuba looks up to you so much.”

In his sleep, the boy started to whimper. Pegasus frowned. His Seto was going to have nightmares again. He wished he could do something to stop them. But he knew he might just make things worse. Especially if he decided to just forget his promises to himself and jump into bed with the young man.

“No.” He muttered, slowly shutting the door. He lay his forehead on the cold metal. “Not unless it's necessary. As much as I love you Seto, I know better than to interfere again. Not where I know I'm not wanted.”

The whimpering on the other side of the door was getting louder. Soon, he knew the screams would start. The man sunk to the floor, using the door as support. “I'm sorry, Seto. This is all my fault for forcing you to remember. I'm so very sorry.”

He stood and started to leave. He didn't want to be there when the screams began. It was too late. From behind the door, he heard his angel cry out in terror. There was pain mixed in with it as well. The voice was being coming more frantic, desperate. And it was calling out a name. His name. In his sleep, his angel was calling out for him.
