Malik leaned back against the plastic of the metro, pulling his arms behind his head as he glanced over towards Ryo. Like always, there was a book pressed right up to the bridge of his nose as his eyes darted back and forth over each printed word. Ever since Bakura started his new job at Domino City Books -- as strange as it sounded -- he always brought home a book for Ryo to read at the end of every week. Of course though, he always finished the first before the second came and so on and so forth. Now he was reading something called Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice, or so the gold lettering on the side said. With a smile coming over his face, Malik peeked out towards the white haired boy and leaned over ever so slightly to blow into his ear; Ryo jumped at least three feet because of it. Malik swore he hit the ceiling.
"What the hell? God, I hate it when yo do that!" Ryo reached over and brought his book down on Malik's head; the Egyptian was always doing stupid things like that. Though it did surprise him that it was the only time he did it the entire time they were on the metro, he wasn't about to press his luck. He rolled his eyes and put the book down against his lap, leaning back against the plastic seat. These things were always so damn uncomfortable. It was funny how while he thought about his seat, Malik rubbed his head and stuck out his tongue: "You're so mean to me. What would Bakura say if he saw that?"
"Damn, I'm rubbing off on you?" Ryo replied, turning back towards the blonde.
"Gee, and here I thought that was only -- " Malik's mouth became covered in Ryo's hand, knowing just exactly what the other boy was about to say. He wasn't about to have the entire metro know about his sex life when he wasn't even supposed to be thinking about one at his age; that was what people thought anyways. What they thought and what they knew were two entirely different things. The doors
opened up as an announcement repeated the station; Ryo pulled back his hand from Malik's mouth to sit back in his seat.
"You shouldn't really say things like that; people are still assholes about our kind of thing." Our kind of thing: that was what Ryo called his relationship with Bakura and Malik's own for that matter. He still liked to believe that even though people acted friendly about the whole 'gay' issue, they really weren't too happy about it. It was easier to pretend to live in a glass bubble than admit the truth sometimes -- just ask Ryo: he was encased by now. Even Jonouchi was more open than he was! Ryo was such a prude.
Malik rolled his eyes, turning his body to rest against the window of the train, and slumped one arm against the window frame. "So I got our rent money, no need to worry this month." Ryo turned his head towards the Egyptian, raising an eyebrow at the sudden change in subject.
"And how did you pull that? Bakura still isn't paid yet, Marik's looking for something and I'm broke as shit." Ryo said, again opting to add a few choice words. So what if someone heard him swearing? Malik's sudden announcement was far more shocking than his foul language.
"I just got it." That made Ryo even more suspicious.
"You didn't rob someone did you?"
"No, that's Bakura's job." Ryo pointed his finger towards Malik and opened up his mouth to speak, but instead shrugged his shoulders and said nothing. He was right: if anyone was to rob someone, it would be Bakura. Denying it would just be plain stupid. Malik leaned back, folding his arms behind his head again, and sighed heavily as he watched Ryo: he was still trying to figure out where he got his money from. It wasn't like he was about to tell him.
"You know Marik's going to be suspicious." Despite being skeptical, Ryo was right. Just showing up with fifteen-hundred dollars out of the blue would be a little strange even for Malik. And so instead he devised a plan in his head, coming up with the most plausible solution to the problem.
"Ishizu wired me money from Egypt." Since his sister had been on vacation for the past three months, it didn't seem like too big of a stretch for Malik to mention it. She spent so much time working with Historical societies for the Preservation of Egyptian Culture that she just lost track of time all together. Besides, Ryo didn't speak to her often so ergo he wouldn't know the difference between the truth and a lie in this instance. Instant winner.
Despite the genius of mentioning his sister being the one who saved his butt, Ryo still didn't believe Malik when he said she was the one who did it; how could she even get that much money? She worked almost for free because she didn't believe that someone should be paid for preserving history. Even he thought she was slightly crazy for that, but she and Ryo were completely different. He sighed and shook his head at the idea, and dismissed the idea of where the money came from. If he kept thinking about it, all the wrong ideas would come into his head and BOOM! Wrong thoughts all night; he'd never be able to look at Malik the same.
Against his hip, Malik's cellphone started to vibrate; Ryo rolled his eyes in such surprise. "Marik's so impatient." The blonde pulled out his phone from his back pocket, unlocking his phone with his four-digit pin to see the name on the text.
"It's not Marik." He replied, his phone vibrating again in his hand.
"Who's texting you then?" Ryo asked, leaning forward to look down onto his phone. With a click of the button, Malik shut off the screen of his phone and shook his head lightly.
"I don't know; some random person." Malik replied with a shrug, pushing his phone back into his back pocket. Ryo was so nosy sometimes: he just wanted to know everything about every -- well, maybe he was just curious this time. Malik was starting to make such a big deal out of something so small and so in an apology he smiled back at Ryo: "Sorry -- it's really not that important."
"If you say so." Ryo leaned back against the plastic of the metro, making a face as he did so. "Did you understand that Chemistry assignment?"
"Fuck no." Malik replied, sliding his arm down into his lap. "I don't understand why I need to know how to do 'Equilibrium expressions' when I don't plan on being a chemist."
Ryo laughed, covering his mouth as he did so. It was funny how much Malik acted like Marik without noticing and he was doing it even now: in the way he sat to the way he spoke, it was exactly like his Yami. He didn't bother mentioning it, Malik never really saw how himself and Marik were really similar besides their appearance. That wasn't his doing anyways.
"Well whatever, I'll help you out later. Bakura said that Jonouchi, Yuugi, Yami, Ryugi and Hiroto are coming by later. I don't know what for but hey, it should be pretty good." Ryo said, leaning forward as he glanced towards the track listing of the metro. Though he rode it every day, he still liked to see where he was up on the map -- three more stops before they were at the right platform. That was the thing
about Domino City: there were far too many places to go, and far too little time to do them all.
The albino lifted his head just enough to see the KaibaCorp building passing by -- the familiar twin Blue Eyes statues outside the main gate -- and smiled to himself. "Oh yeah, Seto isn't coming. He's such a workaholic." Ryo said, glancing back up towards Malik as he smiled.
"Yeah.. total dork." Malik replied, shaking his head as the next station came closer and closer. Without any indication, the blonde grabbed his backpack from the ground and stood up, wrapping his arm around the support pole of the car. Ryo looked up in surprise, but Malik answered him before he could question him.
"I forgot; I left a book at Almondo's -- he said he'd hold onto it for me."
"Oh yeah? Which one?" Ryo asked, attempting to figure a lie from the truth. Thankfully for Malik, he had left a book there.. only it had been two days ago not as early as he made it out to be.
"Quantum Mechanics IV -- Delvin will kill me if I don't have it." Malik said with a shrug, watching only as Ryo sighed in response: that meant he had to tell Bakura and Marik why he wasn't going to be there.. or at least really late. He stepped off of the train as it pulled into the station, getting off with enough time to make a face at Ryo as it began to pull away a minute later, and waited only until it was gone before he started walking from the platform. Malik stepped down onto the lower of the station, near where the buses gathered for patrons, but instead walked right past the bus to Almondo's and headed up Brodie street.
Malik ended up coming towards a park off the side of the road and took a seat on one of the wooden benches with his backpack resting down beside him. He sighed heavily as the little kids in front of him started playing on the jungle gym, climbing over everything they really could, until a book came down from above his head to rest in front of his eyes. Quantum Mechanics IV.
"You left this in my car." Malik smiled to himself, taking the book from the others hands as he glanced back to find his anonymous good Samaritan.
"My hero." He replied, holding onto the book. Though he was happy to have the book back, there was another reason he came to the park instead of to Almondo's and as always.. it wasn't necessarily a good reason. "You have the money, don't you? I need it upfront this time."
"If you have what I want, I have what you need." The other replied, Malik nodding his head in response. He picked up his backpack from against the bench, pulling it over his shoulder, as he stood beside the other with his book underneath his arm. Without even a word, he followed the other back towards his car and sighed heavily as he sat down against the interior cover and looked up once more.
"We have to be careful; I think Ryo's getting suspicious of me." Malik said, watching as the other smiled in response.
"Don't worry -- I can handle Ryo, you just worry about your end of the bargain."
"What the hell? God, I hate it when yo do that!" Ryo reached over and brought his book down on Malik's head; the Egyptian was always doing stupid things like that.
