Chapter 3, Awakening

* * * Yami's POV

A/N: Since the rest of the story takes place in Yuugi's world, I'm not adding "parallel world", when the POV changes.

I left Yugi' body, materializing outside of him in my faded, ghostly form. In the kitchen, when the teakettle whistled, my Aibou it off the stove pouring some hot water into a mug. Then he added a teabag to flavor his drink. He sat down at the table across from me, without saying a word. Only Yuugi's sobs broke the uneasy silence.

"Aibou." I said, breaking the silence, again. "We did what we could."

"I wish we could've done more," he murmured, peering at me over the rim of his mug. "When you first told me about helping Jounouchi-kun, before we came here, I actually thought we could help him."

"We didn't expect it to be this bad, Aibou," I replied, taking a deep breath.

"Are you saying we can't [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:30:00 2003 ]help Jounouchi!?" Aibou snapped, angry with me.

"We're not leaving this world until we help him, koi!" he said, determined to help Jounouchi.

"I've done everything I can. I'm afraid I can't do much more, my Aibou," I admitted, regretfully.

"Maybe I can. I'm going to try," he said, marching out of the kitchen.

In the living room, Yuugi still wept over his beloved koi.

"Everything will be okay, I promise, I'll help him," said Yugi, tenderly, laying a hand on his counterpart's shoulder.

Yuugi looked at Aibou, tearfully. "Can you?"

Aibou nodded. "Yes, I will." He looked around the room. "Zadkiel!! Help me, show yourself!" ordered Aibou, loudly.

"You know I-" he answered Yugi, mentally.

"NOW!!" demanded Yugi, forcefully.

Zadkiel, materialized, now visible to us. His piercing amethyst eyes met Yugi's, full of doubt. "I shouldn't intervene. It goes against God's Law of non-interference," he said, sternly.

"I don't give a damn about God, or whatever laws he makes," said Aibou, frankly. "Now tell me, how can I help Jounouchi-kun?" he demanded.

"I was afraid you'd ask me this," Zadkiel replied, hesitantly.

"Why?" insisted Yugi, facing the taller angel.

"Because if you healed Jounouchi, you'd never be the same again. Inside your mortal body, another You sleeps within. In order to heal Jounouchi, you must awaken this other You, to use it's power to heal him," said Zadkiel. He sighed, shifting his weight onto his left leg. The folds of his violet robe moved too. The shades of pink and magenta shifted it in, shimmering where the new folds gathered.

"Another me? I don't understand. I called Yami my other self, before I knew who he was," muttered Aibou. He knitted his thin brows together in contemplation.

"This other You I'm talking about, is different than Yami. Yami is the spirit of the sennen puzzle. The other you I speak of is who You were, before you became human, Yugi," said Zadkiel, further. He fluttered his wings to stir the air in the hot living room.

"What Zadkiel means Aibou, is that this other self, sleeping inside of your physical body has the power to heal Jounouchi. But to use the power, this other self must be awakened first," clarified Yami, reclining on the couch near the end of Jounouchi's feet.

"I understand that, but what does he mean by, `before I became human?'" Aibou stammered, knitting his brows even more.

"You were like me, an angel before you fell in love, Yugi. To be with the one you loved you sealed away your powers, to live as a human to be by him. For many lifetimes, you incarnated as a human, loving him dearly. But after many incarnations, you forgot who you truly were, Yugi," the purple robed angel continued, relaxing his stance.

"Me? An angel!?" he cried out, in disbelief.

"Yes an angel, but no ordinary one. You were one of the seven great Archangels who stood by God's throne," he said, bowing before Aibout to show his respect.

"LIAR!!" screamed Yugi, at Zadkiel. Yugi took a few quick paces towards Zadkiel, glaring at him.

"Angels can't lie, for we are beings of truth," responded Zadkiel, honestly.

"I can still choose not to believe you!" shouted Yugi, back, denying what Zadkiel said. "Look, I don't care about this angel crap. I just want to heal Jounouchi, okay?" said Yugi quickly, to get his point across.

"To heal Jounouchi, you must confront your angelic self, Yugi," said Zadkiel, laying an encouraging hand on Yugi's shoulder.

"Please, Yugi-san, help my koi," implored Yuugi, his voice tinged with desperation. His eyes begged Yugi to help him.

"Alright," Yugi gave in, resigned.. "To get Jounouchi to stop drinking, I'll do this! "

* * * Yugi's POV

A/N: (1) The order of Virtues has 2 main tasks. First, they maintain the aspects of the natural world such as weather like rain, snow and wind. Secondly, they fulfill the requests for miracles. Archangel Raphael is chief of this order.

(2) When people hear of the "fallen" angel, they think of Satan. The concept of Satan most people think of comes from the traditional Bible. My concept of the rebellious angel will be based off of Gnosticism, which is very different from traditional Christianity. BTW, the game Xenogears was based on Gnosticism.

Deep down inside, I always knew I was different from normal people. Zadkiel told me why; I'm an angel. The human part of me fights back against what he says, but that part of me inside, my angelic self, knows that what he says it's the truth. Now I must face it, to save the one Yuugi loves. The two of us met alone in Yuugi's room.

"Awaken me, Zadkiel," I said, sitting on the floor, preparing myself.

"I want you to think about this first. Once you awaken as your angelic self, your life will change completely," reconsidered Zadkiel, sitting a foot away from me.

"I've thought about this. Let's get started," I urged him.

"Very well, Yugi. Start by closing your eyes," instructed Zadkiel.

I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath to relax.

"With each breath you take, allow yourself to enter a deep state of relaxation," said he, settling down too. He spoke softly and gently to guide me.

"Now that you are relaxed, ask yourself, `who am I?'" his soothing voice suggested.

"Who am I?" I asked myself.

"Physically, you are human, but your soul is angelic," echoed a musical voice, within my conscious.

"Who are you?" I asked it.

"I am your angelic soul. I stand by God's throne, for I am `God's Healing,'" it answered back, its voice melodious soft and gentle.

"God's Healing?" I questioned.

"Yes, I heal the diseases and wounds of God's children. I carry a golden vial of balm, to heal God's children. That's what gives me the power to heal," said it, musically.

"You can heal Jounouchi-kun with that!" I cried, full of excitement.

"Yes, indeed," replied it. "But, [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:50:00 2003 ]unless you accept me as a part of yourself, I * cannot * heal Jounouchi. Will you accept me?"

"I want to, but I'm scared," I spoke, truthfully.

"I understand. You fear me for when you were I long ago, your burden was heavy. God appointed you to heal the earth, as well as his children. He also made you regent of the sun, and Chief of the order of Virtues (1). Those two titles burdened you with such great responsibilities, you never had time to play, or relax. So God relieved you of your duties, but said one day you must return," confessed it, telling me who I was.

"Is that when I left Heaven, came to Earth, and fell in love with Yami?" I inquired. This was all coming together.

"Indeed," replied my angelic self, softly. "To be with him, you decided to become a human. In order to do that, you sealed away your angelic self, me, along with all your powers. You have [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:52:00 2003 ]spent many lives with Yami, living as a human. Eventually, you forgot who you were, falling asleep within. It was no accident you came to Yuugi's world, to heal Jounouchi. God knew healing Jounouchi would awaken your angelic self, so allowed Zadkiel to bring you here."

"God wants to awaken [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:52:00 2003 ]me by healing Jounouchi?" I wondered.

"Yes. His Divinity withheld the knowledge from Zadkiel, or his plans of awakening you might have failed," told this other self, sweetly.

"Why does He want me to awaken?" I inquired, curiously.

"So you'll remember who you are, and thus return to Heaven," spoke it.

"But--- [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:53:00 2003 ]I---I don't want to return!" I said, shocked and [Author ID1: at Tue Jun 17 19:53:00 2003 ]defiant.

"You must," stated my angelic self, recalling the past.

"What!? Why must I obey?" I grumbled.

"Because you're an angel, and angels are compelled to love God. Obeying God and doing what he asks is a part of loving him," told my angelic self. "An angel is one is loves God.

If an angel chooses to stop loving God, he's no longer called an angel. He becomes a fallen angel."

"Fallen one? I've heard of a famous fallen angel who became God's enemy," I gasped, remembering what I learned in my religion class.

"God never wanted him to be his enemy. He tried many times over to love him, but the fallen angel only fled from him. Alone, he began to feel empty inside. Then he thought power might fill that emptiness inside him," continued my angelic self, further.

"So he turned to power, to fill that emptiness?" I asked.

"Indeed," replied my other self. "Other angels who felt the same way he did, joined him, thus leaving Heaven. They became fallen angels too. Together, all of them attacked Heaven, desiring the greatest power of all, God's throne. A cosmic battle shook the Heavens, and many angels died. Eventually, the fallen ones were driven away. Needing a place to hide, the fallen ones created the realm humanity calls Hell."

"I understand. I love God, so I will do as he asks, unlike the fallen ones who attacked him," I said, finally.

"Then you know what must be done. Let us become One, and you shall awaken," my other self concluded.
