Chapter 1
Something about walking into work this morning gave him chills. Nothing in his morning
routine was out of sorts — everything was absolutely&nb sp;peachy and normal for once. Ah, maybe
that was the problem. His mornings never ran this smoothly, especially when quarterly stock
reports were supposed to be on his desk for review within the next five hours. No deadlines were
asked to be extended, no complaints from people about being overstressed and overworked, no
begging for him to be merciful — and rather unlike his natural self — to give them further
leeway in their jobs with a higher pay to compliment their laziness.
Yes, definitely strange… Maybe it was a side effect from actually getting a decent night’s sleep
in his own bed for once instead of running around the office like a mad man. Nothing about his
schedule changed since he graduated high school a few years ago, nothing. He should have been
able to kick back and relax a little in his spare time, enjoy the lives of his brothers more often.
Doubtful. His greatest weakness was being addicted to his job and his lifestyle. If he were to stop
for five minutes, then the entire world would come screeching to a halt and fall out from under
his feet. So, instead of adjusting his schedule to accommodate his free time gained from not
attending classes, he merely double or tripled his already abnormal workload. Just for kicks.
Ahha! That’s why this morning’s occurrences — or lack thereof, really — were bothering him so& nbsp;
much. Something was about to hit the fan, about to change everything drastically.
Smirk ing as he leaned back and sipped at his cooling coffee, Kaiba Seto chuckled to himself. At
least he would be mildly entertained with stopping the entire process dead in its tracks before it
could derail him. After all, many people considered him an intellectual genius that way. In
reality, he merely enjoyed playing the game instead of letting it play him.
Glancing over some of the papers strewn about his desk, he let thoughts of the morning slip into
his subconscious thought patterns. He saw no point in getting himself upset over something —
well, he didn’t see the point of being emotional over anything, honestly — that would be out of
his control until it presented itself to him. Whatever it was, he would win it over eventually.
“Nii-sama!â€
“Oh, no you don’t kiddo!â€
“Noah, let me and my perfectly quaffed locks go!â€
Kaiba sighed, leaning back into his chair and running a hand through his hair. When he asked for
something abnormal to make his day seem normal, he didn’t intend for it to involve his younger
siblings. Ever since they both returned from their stay in America, they would childishly
squabble more than usual over the most trivial circumstances. Stupid American paparazzi filling
their minds with egos that didn’t need to be inflated any further. He would love to righteously
and publically maim the persons responsible.
Before they could burst unceremoniously into his office, he stepped out into the hall and glared
them into silence. “What. Now.â€
“Thereâ&eur o;™s someone here to see you, Nii-sama.†The ebon-haired youngest beamed up at him, a
mischievous grin spreading widely over his face.
“Seto, I told you that your ways would come back to haunt you, didn’t I?â€
â €œWait, what are you two going on about? Noah, I hate getting mixed information, you know
that.†He bit out, glaring at the elder of the two harder.
Noah straightened himself, realigned his one-of-a-kind Mizrahi leather bomber jacket, and
huffed annoyingly. “A woman is sitting down in the lobby waiting to see you. She said that you
knew her sister, that she has a bone to pick with you on her sister’s behalf, and I can only tell you
that you have a grand debt to pay.â€
“Then why is she not being referred to the claims office?!â€
â&eur o;œNii-sama, mind your blood pressure.†Mokuba requaffed his hair into its normal state of
completely being able to cause fangirls to scream and swoon with a single glance at him. “She
apparently has been going through the proper procedures for the last three months, but can no
longer wait for the red tape to take its typical course of molasses-slow action. She’s pretty bad
off and needs your assistance and attention immediately. Oh, you really got yourself in
something deep this time!â€
Kaiba rolled his eyes, crossed his arms, and started stalking towards his receptionist’s desk.
“You make it sound like I did something to kill her sister, or cause complete ruination in their
lives. Don’t be so dramatic, Mokuba.â€
“Heâ&eur o;™s not acting this time around, I’m afraid.†Noah glared at Mokuba as they followed closely
behind their brother, the stare telling Mokuba the way he hand led approaching Kaiba was
probably not the best method in the world. After all, reasons like this were why their eldest
brother refus ed to let them into his personal life on several occasions — an increasing occurrence
since they all graduated from high school.
“Misako-san, would you have security escort…&aci rc;€ He glanced over at Noah.
“Tsunawa Angelique,&acir c;€ he replied calmly, rolling his eyes and waiting for further reaction
patiently. He&nb sp;even exchanged looks with the receptionist — an older woman who’d worked
under Kaiba for some time, since his high school days in fact — knowing that she would
understand and vaguely remember the family name sooner than his brother.
“Tsunawa-san to my — TSUNAWA!?†Kaibaâ& euro;™s face simultaneously turned pale and shades of
red as he spun completely around to face Noah. His sapphire glare was hotter than smelted iron
and sharper than the sharpest katana. “You didn’t bother to warn me why?!â€
Kaiba never thought he would say that family name again, let alone hear it and see a member of
the family it belonged to. I’d broken all ties with her, why would her younger sister be coming
here?
â€&oelig ;You didn’t ask, for one. And besides, seeing you be dramatic for once was more than worth it.â€
Noah turned and headed back down the hall, flitting a few fingers through his teal hair for
emphasis. “I’ll be in my office. Be sure to let me hear some of the juicy details later, hmm?â€
Mokuba smirked, taking a seat next to Misako’s desk. “I want a front row seat to hear the
screaming, thanks. Angelique-san really didn’t seem all that happy with you.â€
â€&o elig;Since when do you get off calling her on a first name basis?â€
“Since she and I attended the same college and graduated with fine arts degrees, thank you very
much.†Mokuba smirked, engrossing himself visually with his handheld. “Really, Nii-sama, must
you be so disconnected?â€
Kaiba snarled and glared down the hall at his office, but vaguely acknowledged Mokuba’s
continuing the conversation of Tsunawa Angelique with Misako. “Pity. She’s yet to do anything
with her education and training though. Shame, considering her vocal talents.â€
Kaiba growled some incoherent mess about what really was and was not a shame and letting him
be the final decision-maker on that subject. Whether either of the gossipers overhead him, he
could have cared less. He stormed back to his office to wait on his unexpected and unwanted
guest.
Damn reality for taking his request too literally. Again.
After two long years, why would Celeste’s family have a reason to contact him? Especially
through a family member that held more than a little contempt for him. He never really noticed
the Tsunawa girls much in high school — sure, he’d heard Celeste in debates and heard about
Angelique’s involvement in drama club and choir. However, neither girl was particularly
outgoing, and they usually kept themselves. He always assumed they did such because they were
considered societal outsiders, even though they pretty much grew up as adoptees in Japan.
He couldn’t ignore Celeste’s presence any longer when she became a member of his graphic
design and engineering team after they graduated high school and she gained a degree abroad in
technical engineering and advancement. She was probably the best computer mind he had on the
team — next to himself and Noah, naturally. Some of her innovative ideas launched the
company into an entirely different field of unforeseen possibilities, making his empire continue
to grow exponentially even as he waited disgustedly for her sister to enter his office.
Honestly, when he began working with Celeste, he never dreamed that he would end up sleeping
with her. Several times. On frequent occasions.
When tragedy struck the family during an extended stay abroad, he never heard from or saw her
again. He knew that the event left several family members missing or dead, but the details were
kept under wraps and was generally forgotten by the media as an insignificant occurrence weeks
after it happened.
Again, he asked himself, what could you want with him now? Celeste wouldn’t have told anyone
— not even her darling younger sister — about their… relationship. One of the reasons why he
and Celeste worked so well together was that they both enjoyed their privacy more than
anything.
â ;€œFancy seeing you again.â€
His head snapped up to look at you, and he immediately straightened himself behind his desk.
You were quite different from the shy, understated girl he remembered throughout middle and
high school. You were only a few years younger than him — in the same grade as Noah, if he
remembered correctly. However, you’d grown into quite the beautiful woman. Your curves were
more alluring compared to Celeste’s, complementing your long legs and height well. He could
see a slight resemblance between you and your sister in looking you over, but your lavender eyes
had an intensity that he never noticed before.
“Tsunawa, have a seat. I would just love to hear why you’ve worked so hard to come here and
see me.†He di dn’t even stand to offer you a seat. He could sense your hostility all the way on the
other side of the room, so he was not about to offer you more hospitality than he felt you
immediately deserved.
Besides, he may have slept with your sister, but you were a complete stranger to him even now.
“I’m not here to play nice either, Kaiba. And I don’t appreciate your mocking my sister when she
can’t be here to defend herself anymore!†Anger swelled and coated your lovely Scottish-tinted
voice, making your words crisp and nearly painful with your sorrow and grief.
He raised an eyebrow, not wanting to believe your tone. “Celeste… she’s…â€
“How dare you use her first name! She loved you, worshiped you, and when she was on her
death bed, struggling to overcome injuries from the crash and bearing a child prematurely,
begging to have peace in her last moments, she refused to acknowledge that you would possibly
come to her if she asked you to. She didn’t want to trouble you — look what that bull has cost
her!†Your voice kept rising as you remained standing in front of his desk, making your eyes
grow wilder and more emotional.
He stood, ready to confront you head-on and defend himself. “Now, see here!â€
“No, YOU see here! I’m not going to stand for this any–â€
â€&oel ig;Wow, she brought a kid with her!â€
You spun and glared over your soldier at the door and Mokuba’s voice, not wanting to reveal
your secret just yet. Kaiba glared at you, hissing, “What child?â€
Noah and Mokuba appeared in the doorway, holding a toddler between them. Kaiba nearly
fainted at the sight of familiar lavender eyes and brown hair. Without a doubt, the boy belonged
to Celeste, especially considering that the boy could have passed for a younger version of Kaiba
himself.
Upon seeing you, the boy struggled against his unmet uncles, wanting to get out of their arms
and into yours. Tears starting swelling in his eyes, you advanced to him and took him into your
embrace. “It’s okay, Gabriel. I’m here now.â€
Your anger subdued, succumbing and bowing down to your protective and caring instincts, but
remained a constant underlying power coursing through your veins. The little boy immediately
nuzzled into your shoulder and he eyed Noah and Mokuba suspiciously. Without looking at
Kaiba, you could feel his anger as well and heard his questions without needing him to speak.
“Celeste begged me to keep him from you. She didn’t want to burden you, especially considering
that she pretty much chose to fall off the face of your life without&n bsp;warning.â€
He kept looking at the boy, not wanting to believe he was even awake and witnessing this whole
scene. Or was it a charade? “Then why are you here?â€
“I can&acir c;€™t handle raising a child on my own. Especially when this child isn’t even technically mine.
Don’t get me wrong, I love him as his aunt. But, he’s not mine, you’re his father, and I’m on my
own here.†You glared at him hotly, holding the child closer. “This is your child, Kaiba. Celeste
didn’t want you to know about him, but he at least deserves to know what his father looks like
and to be able to spend time with him as he grows up. So, you have two choices. Live up or pay
up.â€
When you sensed him starting to argue further, you held up a finger to silence him and
continued. “And I don’t mean by digging into your pockets and pathetically attempting to throw
a few thousand dollars my way.â€
“What are you going to do, drop him off to get him out of your hair, and walk out of his life?â€
Kaiba stepped around the desk, going on the defensive as much as possible. He could smell
trouble and was going to play the game for all it was worth.
“If you would have listened to me, you’d know I’m not going to do something so low. I’m just
going to force you to make the decision on your own as to how important your playtime with my
sister really was to you. You’re not the best parent, and Gabriel didn’t really win the lottery
when I was left as his only other option either. His grandparents are gone and so is his mother.
I’m not about to leave him, but I’m not about to let you get off easy on this one either.†You
continued to glare at him as he approached. This kind of anger was beyond your typical persona
that he remembered from high school. You’ve learned to play the game at his level very well,
and then some. Just like your sister did. “Besides,  ;I’m certain that you’ve no clue on how to even
care for a child so young.â€
He gave a&n bsp;long, hard look at the child. You did have a point. He did have some level of
responsibility to not only his son, but also to Celeste. She wasn’t really his future wife or
anything, but she died wanting to leave him the one thing he valued most: his privacy. However,
she didn’t realize the costs it would lay on you or her son.
“What do you want? To leave him here for a while, and then come back and pick him up every
so often?â€
“At least to give you a chance to own up to what you created.†Your words were just as sour as
they were cruel.
Kaib a’s gaze met yours directly. “Under one condition. You and the boy come as a joint
package.â€
â€&oe lig;Obviously. You'd make a shit single parent.†[1]
