Chapter 2
When Kaiba said that you and your nephew came as a joint project, you didn’t realize that he
would have both of you moving into his home. Give you a stipend to care for the child and come
and visit once awhile, sure. Personally choose a small apartment and provide every ounce of
financial need for the child with a few birthday cards and dinners here and there, fine. However,
becoming a live-in nanny at the Kaiba Estate was not at the top of your list of things to do when
you addressed Kaiba in his office about his son.
Thankfully enough, you didnâ €™t have too many things to bring along with you. Most of the items
belonged to Gabriel. After the accident, you sold the majority of your family’s belongings or let
other family members take them as souvenirs. You really could have cared less. You had the
bare basic necessities to live on. Rearing and caring for Gabriel mattered more than anything
most of the time anyway.
When you walked into the large suite Kaiba chose for you to share with Gabriel in a semi-private
wing of the estate, your jaw nearly dropped and smacked the floor. Okay, this was definitely a
fair trade off from the tiny one room hole the in the wall you managed to afford. “Wow… At
least he has decent taste in design…â€
†œActually, Mokuba-sama is the mastermind behind most of the designs in this house. If Seto-
sama had his say, everything would be all shades of blue and white.†The maid leading you
about the suite, busily checking to make certain things were to her specifications, seemed to be
very acquainted with the brothers Kaiba. “The nursery will be completed in a day or two — a
special project of Mokuba-sama’s — so the young master will be rooming in the guest room of
your suite.â€
â&eur o;œWoah, guest room?†Your eyebrows furrowed and knit tightly above your piercing gaze. You
certainly were not expecting something quite this grand. You couldn’t quite decide if he was
trying to be overly accommodating for your sake, as an apology to your sister, or to persuade you
to keep your mouth shut if the press happened to come knocking.
Your gut instincts agreed with the third option. You knew the media was bound to have a field
day when this little bit of news went public.
“Yes. Seto-sama wanted to make certain that you both have everything you might need. Privacy
for yourself and visitors included.†She was certainly well aware of the situation you were
moving yourself into, and you were certain that she wasn’t about to give you all of the details
right away. She was going to psychotically enjoy watching you figure a lot of this new living
situation out on your own. You could only imagine that she would keep any opinions to herself
about the whole situation for the most part unless her opinions would impart some type of
beneficial wisdom.
“Thank youâ&euro ;¦ I think I can handle settling in myself from here.†After all, the majority of your
things had already been unpacked and put away.
She nodded and smiled as Gabriel babbled up at you from his stroller, demanding to be set free
to roam his new surroundings. “He’s quite tall for his age… Probably gets that from his father.â€
Kneeling to set the demanding toddler free, you nodded in agreement. “Celeste is shorter than
me… Well, was, I mean.â€
â€&oeli g;It’s okay to talk about her like she’s still here. She’s very important to you.†She knelt to him as
he tottered a few steps towards her before dropping to his knees and crawling to her. He didn’t
need to ask for your reassurance or permission. He instinctively knew to trust her. The kid had a
better sense of judgment than you and most other adults for crying out loud. She scooped him
into her arms and stood with him on her hip. “But at least you have this little gift to honor her
with. You’re quite brave and loving to take care of him.â€
â& euro;œI was his only choice. I didn’t figure out at first who the father was. When Celeste told me the
day before she passed away, I couldn’t believe it.â& euro; You remained sitting on the floor a moment
before standing and putting the stroller away in a nearby closet. “She made me promise to keep
things secret from him… I didn’t have to ask why. She wants to keep things private and secret on
both ends, not just to pacify him. However, I just couldn’t take it anymore.â€
Providing  ;for a baby at any age was not something you’d envisioned yours elf doing at any point
in the near future when Gabriel was born. You didn’t have the most stable job when the
responsibility to rear him fell to you, and you had even less money to deal with as the family
savings whittled away to pay for the expensive odds and ends a baby needs. You were so tired of
trying to afford housing, food, diapers, clothes, and day care all at once.
Part of you partially blamed Kaiba for taking your sister from you. You loved your nephew
dearly, but if she hadn’t been pregnant with a pompous, uncaring asshole’s child, you might still
have your sister around.
“I know what you’re thinking. And she might still be in a relationship with Seto-sama if she were
still alive. So, you can’t condemn either of them for what you’ve been through.†The maid sat
Gabriel back down as he jittered and fought to get free of her. He stumbled about, still preferring
to crawl as he moved. “Despite your self-anger for betraying your sister’s last requests, I am
certain that your decision to connect father and son will be a beneficial one in the long run.â€
She patted&n bsp;your shoulder and advanced towards the door, signifying that your conversation was
over. “Wait! I didn’t catch your name.â€
“Feel free to call me Nishimura. The boys always have. If there is anything you need, simply
ring for me on the console here. The red button connects directly to my cell.†After pointing to
the intercom, she bowed at the door and closed it as she left.
You sighed, looking at Gabriel as he crawled towards the living room set across the room. You
pretty much had everything except a kitchen and laundry room to yourself. You had a feeling
either of those would be at your disposal if you needed them, but you wouldn’t be expected to do
any cleaning or cooking unless you absolutely wanted to.
“This is going to take some getting used to, Gaby-baby.†You smirked slightly as he drug a
pillow off one of the love seats and started beating on it with both hands as if it were a drum. His
giggles were infectious and typically washed away most of your sorrows.
“It is a little overwhelming, isn’t it?â€
You jumped and spun around onto your knees, reaching for your left boot. You carried an easily
concealed knife there, never knowing when you would need it. However, your guard
immediately dropped when you realized that Mokuba was the source of the voice standing at the
door way. You were typically a rather alert person, so you couldn’t figure out how he managed
to open the door again without alerting you beforehand.
“In some ways yes, and in some ways no. I got a taste of this from hanging around you in
college, remember?†You stood and crossed your arms over your chest, eyeing him suspiciously.
He was up to something. What, you weren’t quite sure of yet.
“ And neither of us foresaw this coming.†He smirked, opening the door to the nursery. You
scoffed slightly at the way he waltzed in like he owned the place. Well, his brother did, but that
did not necessarily excuse his attitude. Nishimura made it clear that this space was yours so long
as you and Gabriel lived within those walls. “Though, in a way, it’s kind of cool. We’ll get to use
our talents together again.â€
“Donâ&eur o;™t get ahead of yourself. Just because you’re playing interior desi gner for Gabriel’s room
doesn’t mean that I’m about to collaborate with you — or either of your brothers — on anything
in the near future.†You weren’t about to tell him that you hadn’t sung in ages for anyone other
than Gabriel. Hell, you were kind of surprised that he even remembered your training and
performances.
“Now, now, Ang-san.†He smirked, motioning for you to follow him into the room. “I’m not
insinuating anything. I’m s imply stat–â€
&acir c;€œHoly… Are you really  ;certain that this room isn’t near being done yet?†Looking around the
nursery, you were completely blown away. The walls were newly painted and the floors were
newly refinished. Empty boxes set strewn about with nearly complete pieces of baby furniture
standing near them. Clothes were neatly organized — and no doubt recently divorced of their
designer-label price tags and washed — in the half-opened closet. The furniture you brought
with you was nowhere to be seen except for the crib
“It will be by the end of the week. I want to make certain that you have everything immediately
at your disposal before you can have full access to everything in here. Besides, I want to see if
there’s anything that needs to be done to the room medically.†He looked around the room, doing
checks through a mental checklist nearly as efficiently as Nishimura could. Though you assumed
he p robably picked up the ability more from his eldest brother than from her. “Nii-sama had
horrible allergy and sinus problems as a kid. They’re not as bad as they used to be, mostly due to
better living through pharmaceuticals, but they can trip him up sometimes…â€
&acir c;€œWell, that explains where those nasty genes come from, then.†You leaned against the door
jamb, keeping an eye on Gabriel as much as the other eye ogled the contents of the nursery.
“Celeste never had any allergy problems… Hell, she rarely got sick at all growing up.â€
â€&o elig;Envious?†Mokuba smirked over at you, heading out of the room with a small plush doll of
sorts in hand.
“Considering how out of whack my anemia can get, yes,†you muttered, silently thanking the
heavens that your personal illness didn’t appear to be genetically passed on to Gabriel. At his age
and until your preteen years, you were frequently in and out of the hospital. Living in an
orphanage in Scotland that could barely afford to take care of the fifty or so well children for the
first few years of your life didn’t help either. Being adopted by the Tsunawas happened totally
by chance, and it took that chance happening to get your health on track at long last. “It’s good to
know who I can beat up for putting Gabriel through those health problems.â€
“Iâ&eu ro;™ll make certain to get him to a doctor first thing in the morning.â€
“Nii -sama! Jesus, could you stop using those mad ninja skills for once and actually announce
yourself when you enter a room?†Mokuba cu rsed for both of you with his words as you fought
to swallow your heart where it jumped to in your throat. These Kaiba brothers were going to
keep driving your nerves into hyper-drive. How in the hell were they so easily able to get around
your barriers?
Kaiba raised an eyebrow, but directed the rest of the conversation to you as much as possible. “I
take it that you haven’t been taking him to a specialist?â€
“With what money? Do you even realize how expensive keeping up with a child is?†You tried
to contain your sarcasm with laughter, but failed miserably.
He snorted in reply and glanced at the nursery door that Mokuba had left open. “I’m starting to.â€
Gabriel stopped in his playing about the furniture and looked around for the new voice’s source.
He was starting to get used to being around so many new people, especially Mokuba and Noah.
Both uncles made getting to know the little boy a priority. Their brother, on the other hand,
didn’t seem to be as directly persuaded to do the same. Cocking his head to the side, the toddler
looked his father over several times. You were certain that he had no clue exactly who the person
before him was to him and the rest of the world.
Pulling himself to his hands and knees again, Gabriel crawled a little closer to Kaiba, but stopped
half way between the distance that separated him from the tall CEO towering over him. You all
three watched the child in silence for a moment, waiting to see what he would do.
When it became apparent that all Gabriel wished to do was analyze and study his father silently
— something he did with people that always amazed and entertained you — Kaiba turned on his
heel and headed for the door. “Nishimura will make the appointment, and Roland will escort you
there tomorrow.â€
You went to protest as he stopped at the door, but he cut you off, not wanting to argue with you
by not giving you the chance to fight. “And I’m giving you an advance on your wages, Tsunawa.
Do yourself a favor, buy some new clothes. When the media start poking around, I don’t want
them to question who I’ve chosen to help rear my child based on the way she dresses.â€
â€& oelig; What!? Kaiba!†You started towards the door, but stopped when Mokuba’s arm came across the
front of your shoulders.
“He’s just being his normal ass of a self. Let him go.â€
“I didnâ ;€™t agree to this kind of treatment when I agreed to this entire arrangement, you know!â€
Turing around sharply after sneering at the door for a final moment, you picked Gabriel up and
held him close a moment. The boy definitely had a way of calming& nbsp;you. His hand started playing
with one of the curls of your long silvery-purple hair, making the curls around it bounce and
sway.
â€& oelig; You may think that the only thing you ever want to be to him is an aunt, but you’re the closest
thing to a mother he will ever have.†Mokuba stated, finally offering the plush in his hand to
Gabriel. The toddler cooed and giggled at the small dragon plush and immediately stopped
playing with your hair to take the gift from his uncle. “My brother may never live up to be the
kind of parent you would want him to be for Gabriel. There are just too many other factors in
play right now to tell what will happen. Until then, don’t stop being the wonderful person that
you are to Gabriel, eh?â€
“Why do I have a feeling that you’re trying to persuade me into something?†You rolled your
eyes, not surprised that the family fetish for dragons would be inadvertently passed onto Gabriel.
“I donâ€&t rade;t need to persuade you. That child is all the persuasion you will ever need. You’re that
connected to him.â€
