Splash.

A car rolled by, driving over a mucky puddle and spraying the lone boy who was walking silently down the sidewalk on his way to school. The driver kept on going, not even pausing to apologize to the child. The little boy turned around, his crimson eyes dull and sad. It wasn't the first time someone had sprayed mud on him, unintentionally, and not apologized. But that wasn't what filled his eyes with sorrow.

A soft sigh escaped the boy's parted lips and he turned back to the road, looking up the hill he was forced to walk up and down every day to get to and from school. His father had a car, but was too caught up in himself to drive his own son to school. That and he didn't feel like wasting gas on someone he thought of as insignificant.

This taught the boy to fend for himself.

And as for his mother, she hated the little wretch whom she was forced to call her son. He was a mistake anyways. He wasn't supposed to even be alive right now. Just and accident. She was drunk at a party one night and got pregnant with a kid. How was she supposed to know having a kid would change her life forever? So, since she didn't care about the boy in the first place, she just abused him. Took out life's daily stresses on him with a few kicks or punches.

This taught the boy not to trust anyone.

So it was no wonder that ten-year-old Yami Mutou was walking to school all alone on this rainy day without even an umbrella. Without any friends, without anyone to talk to. Just alone. Like it had always been.

The kids at school all thought Yami was weird. Not only did he have odd colored hair and eyes, but he never made any move to talk to anyone. It was as though he thought he was better than everyone else. So much better, that he wouldn't even look at someone who tried talking to him. He would just glare and stare right through them. He had intense eyes which even scared some children.

So, Yami Mutou was a loner with uncaring, abusive parents, and no friends. Well...there was someone that tried to get close to him. But that was a long time ago. The only person Yami could perhaps call a friend. He had only been five at the time...

Her name was Anzu; an innocent girl with short brown hair. With wide blue eyes that could judge a person with a single glance, Anzu used to be very popular among the younger children.

Whenever someone would laugh at her for befriending the younger kids, she would just giggle and walk away. She didn't care what they thought of her. And Yami really admired that.

Yami would often wish he could be like that. Forget the taunting of classmates. Just forget everything. Be able to smile and casually walk away from the pain.

There was one encounter between the two that Yami still had not forgotten. Anzu had actually approached him and tried to start a real conversation. Something Yami had never been a part of before.

"I havsta move t'morrow."

Yami looked up at the sound of the friendly voice. He smiled slightly, seeing the little girl, Anzu, standing in front of him. She gazed down with sad azure eyes.

"A-Are you talking t-to me?"

The little girl nodded and sat herself down next to the taller. Yami's eyes narrowed suspiciously then returned to normal size. He knew Anzu wouldn't hurt him. Anzu wouldn't hurt a fly. "Wheres you movin'?"

"I dunno. Mommy just told me that t'morrow I had to go aways. She said to say byes to all my fwiends."

The little boy curled his legs up, resting his chin on his knees. "Then why you talkin' to me?"

Anzu blinked her large eyes full of question at the other's sad appearance. "Why not? Aren't'cha my fwiend?"

The crimson eyed five-year-old gasped and turned to the shorter. "Y-you think I am?" Again, the brunette nodded as a response. Yami couldn't believe it. He had never even talked to the girl before except for the occasional "hello," and still she considered the quiet boy a friend. Yami was very shocked.

The brown haired girl grinned and brought one of her hands up
and wrapped it around him in a friendly hug. "I-it's too bad I havsta move. We-wes coulda been bestest fwiends." She pulled away and picked up the purple rubber ball next to her. "D-do you wanna play with me?" she asked hopefully.

Yami nodded and caught the ball as it was rolled to him. He then rolled it back to Anzu with a wide smile on his face.

That had been the first and only smile that had ever graced Yami Mutou's lips. Since that day, a permanent frown had been tattooed on the boy's face, curling his lips down. He became angry at the world for taking his only friend away.

Yami kicked off his shoes as he reached the elementary school. He put them in his cubby and changed into his indoor shoes. Picking up his backpack and pencil case, he headed for his homeroom class. With a frown, he opened the door to room 103, Ms. Shina's third grade class.

Some students sniggered at his muddy clothes. Ms. Shina just sighed and stood from her desk, taking a towel out from one of the cabinets and handing it to the boy who took it with a small "T-th-thank you, ma'am," as thanks.

Yami took his seat and wrapped the towel around his small form, ignoring the two class clowns, Katsuya Jounouchi and Honda Hiroto, as they mimicked him.

"T-th-thank you, ma'am," the blonde Jounouchi said in a shy voice, batting his eyelashes.

Honda burst into laughter and did the same thing, wearing the sullen expression that always seen on the tri-haired boy's face. "I'm Yami and I hate the world." He sniggered and other students giggled amongst themselves.

Tears stung at crimson eyes and their owner looked down at his desk. "I won't let the tears fall," he whispered to himself. "I won't show them any weaknesses." Blinking, the tears were gone and a scowl replaced his frown. He opened his math workbook and began working on multiplication problems, solving them easily. He was a very smart student when he wanted to be. Another reason why he was picked on.

"Alright class, settle down. Take your seats while I take role." Ms. Shina picked up a clipboard and a pen. "Chloe Aneko?"

"I'm here!" Chloe said, raising her hand.

The woman nodded and marked her present. She continued calling out student's names, going down the chart in alphabetical order. "Kumi Dai?"

"Here!"

"Honda Hiroto?"

"Present!"

"Katsuya Jounouchi?"

The blonde boy grumbled at being called by his first name and said he was present.

The teacher rolled her eyes at the boy's antics and marked him as present. "Seto Kaiba?"

"I'm here, Ms. Shina," the brunette boy said, smirking at Jounouchi. The two were, one could say, rivals. Seto being the perfect and smartest one in the class, Jounouchi being the troublemaker with the lowest grades. Opposites, but rivals all the same.

Ms. Shina smiled at Seto, her star pupil. "Yami Mutou?"

Yami looked up from his work and nodded that he was here.

The woman sighed, seeing that the tri-hared boy was acting mute once again. He always did this. It was nothing new to anyone.

Once finished taking role, the teacher told the class to take out their reading books and get with a buddy. They would be doing partner reading today. The students cheered and jumped up from their seats, running to their friends. Yami stayed in his seat. Nobody would want him for a partner. Nobody ever had before.

The teacher frowned at seeing him by himself. "Yami, why haven't you partnered up with anyone?" The boy just shrugged and took out his reading book. Seeing she wouldn't get an answer, Ms. Shina went to the blackboard and wrote the pages they had to read in bold chalk letters. Sighing, the boy began to read his book.
