Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Inconsolable ❯ Chapter One ( Chapter 2 )
-Chapter One -
Seven Years Later...
Seventeen-year-old Yami Mutou grumbled as he slipped on his outside running shoes, walking out into the rain. He found no use for an umbrella. Even with one, the rain would dampen his mood, not to mention his clothes. The walk to the apartment complex was long, but he needed the walk. It gave him time to clear his mind before he got home. Shivering as the cold water soaked his white uniform shirt and chilled his skin, he began to walk towards the apartment where he lived with his mother.
Last year, his father had died from lung cancer. The cause was most likely the two packs of cigarettes he smoked daily. His mother was still the abusive woman she had always been. Because he was still a minor, he was forced to still live with his parent, even if she was an abusive slut.
Yami looked up, seeing a dimly lit café on the corner of the alley he was walking past. It was cold out. The wind bit at his face, causing it to become numb. A nice coffee or hot cocoa would be nice at a time like this. Even the warm air of the café could do some good and maybe warm his icy blood.
Shrugging, the teen opened the door to the Coffee Bean café. There were a few people inside, all glum looking and wearing black. A purple haired girl stood at the cashier. She smiled as the customer walked in. "May I get you something?"
Yami walked towards her and looked up sadly. How he wished he could have a joyful spirit like hers. Life would be so much more worth living if he did. He gazed up at the menu. "Um..." he stopped and coughed. His throat was dry. "Y-yeah....Gr-grande Ch-Chai." His voice was hoarse, evidence of him not using it for a long while. He himself was surprised he could even form a complete sentence.
The other teen nodded. "That will be three-forty, please."
Yami took out his wallet from his back pocket and handed the cashier girl four bills. When she tried giving him the change back, he just held his hand out to stop her and walked away, taking a seat at an empty table.
After a few minutes, the purple haired girl came over to his table and sat down, handing him his Chai tea. Crimson eyes looked quizzically at her. "My shift is over," was the explanation to her presence. "And you looked as though you could use some company," she added after a moment.
Angled eyes looked to the blue nametag on the collar of her uniform shirt. "M-Miho?"
Miho smiled, her lilac eyes twinkling. "That's my name. Miho Nosaka. What's your name?"
Yami looked away and mumbled his name. He then took a sip of his tea. It was a little spicy. Good. He liked it. Miho made a good Chai. He coughed again, clearing his throat. He was still thoroughly surprised that someone was trying to talk to him. That would be the second time in his life that someone tried to start an actual, friendly conversation with him. Besides the counselor at school, that is. But Yami didn't like him.
The lavender haired employee rested her chin on her hand. `His name is darkness?' "Yami? That's an...interesting name." A curt nod was the only reply. She sighed, trying to think of something to get the handsome teen across from her to talk. There was such a deep sorrow that filled his eyes. And he seemed so lonely, even when just sitting there.
Miho didn't like to see people alone. She could tell Yami didn't really appreciate her being there, but she just wanted to cheer the boy up a little. Perhaps become a friend. The boy looked so sad. So forlorn. It made her sad just thinking about it. She looked at the mug in his hands. "I-is the Chai good?" She asked hopefully.
"Yeah."
It was a strained, forced response. Yami didn't want to seem rude, but he did want Miho to go away. It was nice that she was trying to be friendly, but he didn't do that. He didn't get close to people. He wasn't friendly with people. He didn't like people plain and simple. People were bad. That was what life had taught him, at least.
Miho was about to say something more when a small applause was heard. Amethyst eyes averted to the small wooden stage where a girl dressed stood in a black skirt, pink glittery tube top, a black leather jacket, and a black hat which hung over her right eye. The teen's only visible left eye was a glimmering cobalt jewel, lighting up the entire stage. A few brown bangs hung over the girl's eye, casting a shadow over her face. In her arms she carried a guitar.
A short boy with red, black, and blonde hair, similar to Yami's own, walked on the stage after her. He flashed a bright smile at the small audience.
Several girls giggled. Obviously, he was quite popular. He turned his violet eyes on the brunette and handed her a microphone
The café employee looked at Yami, whose jaw had dropped open slightly at the sight of the girl on stage. She giggled. "That's Anzu Mazaki," she whispered.
The name didn't phase the crimson eyed teen. He had long ago forgotten of the little angel who tried to be his friend, but then was forced to leave him. He didn't remember the little girl whom he had played his first game of catch with. He didn't remember the only one who had ever seen him smile.
"-And the boy with her is Yugi Muto," she continued, her eyes glossy as she eyed the cute, short boy next to Anzu.
Yami wasn't paying attention to Miho anymore. His focus was entirely on the pretty brunette on stage. She gave a small nod and smile to Yugi before facing the audience.
Yugi introduced her and the song she would be singing. It was an original work, no doubt. Something he knew the café goers enjoyed coming to listen to.
Anzu began strumming the guitar slowly. She opened her mouth and sang into the microphone, reciting her song. "When its dark out, and it's cold. Do not shiver all alone. I am with you, call my name and I'll be there." Azure eyes darted out into the audience, locking momentarily with scarlet orbs. "Take my hand and I will guide you. I will show you the right path. 'Cause I'm your angel and I always will be there..."
Miho smiled and cushioned her head in his arms. "I love her songs," he exclaimed. "Makes me wish I could write them too."
"Anything can happen. But if you're scared, I'll hold you tight. And I'll shine light, right down upon your pretty face..."
Yami drank his tea slowly, closing his eyes. The words of the song stuck to him. He wished someone could help him. Just take his hand and lead him in the right direction. That would make everything so easy. But life just wasn't easy. ...Especially his life.
But he didn't want anyone to help him. He did, but he didn't. Yami was stubborn. He wanted so badly to be loved, but he knew no one would ever look at him as a lover. Nobody would ever look at him as anything besides a weirdo, a loner, or a stuck up jerk. And he wasn't any of those things. Well, he technically was a loner, but that was only because he didn't trust people. And he had a very good reason not to trust people.
More applause was heard as Anzu finished her song, bowed, thanked the small audience, and hopped off the stage. In a matter of moments, she was surrounded by several fans. They laughed and chattered loudly, praising her and going on about how her poems really spoke to them.
Yugi introduced a poet and walked off the stage to join the brunette. He was swarmed by a few girls who clung to his arms and tried to get his attention.
Yami rolled his eyes and finished off his drink. He looked at Miho and held up his cup. Miho turned her eyes back to ruby and jumped, seeing the teen staring right at her with those angry angled orbs. "Um...my shift is over but why don't I take that for you?" she asked, taking the cup and heading back to the kitchen.
Not waiting for the teen to get back, Yami stood and pushed in his chair, taking one last look at the singer girl. A cerulean eye turned and locked with his, a smile on her face as she nodded to Yugi. His heart was full of longing. A longing to be a part of a group like that. A longing to just fit in somewhere... The red eyed teen then snorted and walked out of the café. He didn't need friends, even if he did sometimes wish for company.
The wind blew harshly at him, causing his blonde bangs to whip painfully across his face. The tri-haired teen grumbled and left the alley, heading back towards his apartment.
"Hey, wait up!"
Yami turned, his poignant eyes landing on the singer. Their eyes briefly locked and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. The girl smiled and stepped forward. "I noticed you didn't have a jacket."
The taller grunted and watched as Anzu removed her leather jacket and handed it to him. Raising an eyebrow, Yami looked suspiciously from the shorter teen to the jacket.
"You looked cold. I figured you might like to use it. It might be a little small, but I assure you its very, very warm..." Anzu blushed and gazed fondly up at the taller. "I-I'm Anzu. Anzu Mazaki"
Crimson eyes narrowed and their owner tossed the jacket into a puddle on the ground. Anzu's eyes widened and she gasped. "Hey!" She ran over and picked up the jacket.
Yami growled and stormed away. "I...d-don't need pity..."
The blue eyed girl scowled at him. "Fine!" She brushed the jacket off with her hand and went back inside the Coffee Bean. "Asshole," she muttered under her breath.
Miho, who had just returned from the kitchens, went over to her. "Did Yami leave?"
"If by Yami you mean the messy haired jackass, than yes. He just left."
The other girl raised an eyebrow. Anzu was never one to judge quickly. She believed in a good in everyone. What was the cause of this anger? "Why do you refer to him as that?"
The singer huffed, her cheeks puffing out slightly as she held up her ruined jacket. "This jacket is made of expensive, one-of-a-kind Italian leather! I gave it to him so he wouldn't get cold, seeing as it's chilly and he didn't have any coat on. And do you know what he did?! He threw it in the mud! Now it's ruined!" The girl snarled and swung the jacket over her shoulder, striding away towards the back of the café.
Miho put a hand to her forehead. It took a lot to piss Anzu off...but touching anything of hers in a way she didn't approve of would right away throw her into an impetuous fury. People could be such losers sometimes.
Anzu came back a few minutes later, slightly calmed down. She had a cappuccino in her hands and a small frown on her face. "I should get home. See you around, Miho."
The lavender eyed girl waved goodbye as she left, deciding it would be best if she got home too. Her parents were pretty overprotective and easily became worried if she came back late from work. Pausing long enough to go find her umbrella, she left the shop.
Anzu stopped outside the café door, seeing Yugi standing alone in the rain. He smiled at her. She approached him and opened her pink umbrella, placing it over both their heads. She returned the smile. Together, they walked back towards the direction where Yugi's house was located. The brunette lived right down the street from him, so they always walked home together.
Yugi and Anzu were...friends, one could say. They both attended Domino High School, an advanced school in the richer part of the city. They were actually closer than just friends. Closer than best friends. Almost like brother and sister, only in a more amorous type of way. Most of their peers considered them a couple, even if they themselves didn't.
Yugi was aware of his deep feelings for Anzu and often wondered if any sort of romantic relationship would sprout between them. But then again, he was also easily attracted to other females who were pleasing to the eye. Such was the nature of a typical teenage boy. Still, he stuck to Anzu being his main crush. She was cute, dressed nice, she was sensible, had a wonderful voice and she had a wonderful, cheerful personality. He had liked her since she first transferred to Domino High a few years ago.
Anzu, on the other hand, was oblivious to any emotions her shorter friend held for her. She only cared about two things besides studies and her friends, and that was song writing and cheerleading. Anzu was very absorbed in song and poetry writing. It took up most of her life. The other part of her time was consumed with cheerleading practice and studying to improve her grades. This is why she never stopped to think about possibly starting a relationship. Well, she had once before...
When she was about fourteen or fifteen years old. Right after she moved back to city of Domino. She had had a tremendous crush on Yugi, like lots of other girls in the grade. But she had dismissed the feelings after a while, thinking that if they started a relationship, their friendship would be damaged. And she most certainly wouldn't want that. Yugi was her most cherished friend. And that's all he most likely would ever be.
The two had gone out on many dates. Well, the brunette liked to call them 'outings' instead of actual dates. Dates made them sound like a couple. And they weren't. They had kissed. Once. Nothing passionate or fiery. Just simple pecks on the lips. Yugi liked to think of them as more than that, though.
The kiss had been at the beach, watching the sunset. Three years ago. They both had been fifteen and confused about their feelings.
Yugi sighed, lying on a red towel in the sand, watching Anzu a few feet away in the shallow beach water. He stretched his legs out in front of him and placed his arms behind his head, at ease just watching her splash around. A small smile adorned his lips, brightening his eyes as the sun sunk slowly behind the blue waters of the ocean.
A soft giggle was heard and suddenly a weight settled itself on the teen's bare stomach. Amethyst eyes turned upward and met with dazzling indigo. His smile widened and he propped himself up with his elbows. "Comfy?" he inquired with a chuckle.
"Very."
A light blush crept up into Yugi's cheeks. He looked back toward the sunset. "It's pretty, isn't it?" He himself didn't know if he was referring to Anzu or the orange sphere descending beyond the sea. He couldn't deny that Anzu was a beautiful girl, though he never thought much about her in such a way. She had always been just a close friend. Though right now, she seemed like so much more than that. So much more...
Before either one of them realized it, their lips connected in a soft kiss. The two had rolled over onto the side of the blanket with their arms wrapped around each other.
"Yeah," Anzu whispered, answering his question, "It is." Her eyes suddenly widened and she pulled away, her hand touching her lips. "O-oh god! Yugi, I-I'm so sorry!"
The tri-haired teen smiled up at her. "It's okay...I...I kind of liked it."
The blue eyed girl didn't answer, only stared at her feet. The blush didn't disappear from her face as they sat there. The sun was gone now. It was just them alone on the beach.
Ever since that day, Yugi's feelings towards Anzu seemed to multiply. He considered himself to be in love with the brunette. Anzu's feelings towards Yugi, however, seemed to dissipate. She never again looked at Yugi as a boyfriend or anything like that. Just as a friend. A very close friend.
In truth, she didn't want any romantic relationship to form. She knew Yugi wasn't the one for her, even if Yugi himself argued that he was. But Anzu knew that one day he'd realize the truth...and he would be greatly hurt by the truth. This was something she dreaded more than anything. The day when she did find that person she was meant to be with...She just hoped that Yugi would find his soul mate first so he would be spared the heartbreak....
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yami opened the door to his apartment. He was still in a pretty sour mood. He couldn't believe that girl. Offering him a jacket. Was it some kind of trick? Two people being friendly toward him in one day?! Yeah right...they had probably planned it together! Like he would accept some stranger's jacket, even if they had been sincere looking.
Looks were so deceiving though. Anzu was probably laughing in her mind as he handed the jacket over. No. Yami would not be the subject of jocular interest. Not this time.
With a slam of the door, Yami made his presence known. His mother poked her head out of the kitchen and rolled her eyes. "Oh, it's you. I thought it was someone important."
The teen rolled his eyes and went into the kitchen to get something to eat before starting his homework.
"I need you to cook me dinner tonight. I'm having a guest and I want the food to be good." The red eyed youth snorted. The red haired woman glared at him. "Don't you snort at me, boy. Stop being selfish and make the dinner. You have plenty of time to do school work or whatever crap you spend all your time doing all by yourself."
Yami nodded slowly and took out some pasta noodles and canned sauce. His mother always made him cook when she had a friend over. Just so she could say she made the dinner and make a good impression.
"And after you make the dinner, stay up in your room. I told my...friend... I didn't have any children. So just don't make any noise alright?" Ms. Mutou took out a cigarette from the pack in her hand and placed one in her mouth. "And where the hell's my lighter?" she asked, beginning to search her pockets.
The tri-haired teen had already started boiling the water and disappeared into his bedroom. He went onto the computer. Well, not his. It was his father's before he passed away. The process to log onto the internet was slow.

Yami sighed. What else was new? It wasn't as though he actually had any friends who would bother to email him. He decided to go into a chat room. Maybe there would be someone lonely like him to talk to.
Chat Room 290490205: Lonely
Started by: Lonely_Heart0604
Yami waited and after a moment. Someone suddenly entered the chat room.
Sing4Me: Hi.
The red eyed teen watched the computer screen. Someone was talking to him. Even if it was just some stranger. Someone was actually talking to him! He continued to watch the chat room box.
Sing4Me: Hello? Is anyone there?
Yami didn't answer. He knew he shouldn't trust a random person. What if they came after him? He always heard that stalkers roamed the internet. And he certainly was the perfect prey. He had no one to protect him.
Sing4Me: Lonely_Heart0604? Why aren't you talking?
Sing4Me: yoo-hoo? Anyone there..?! :/
The teen stood up and walked away. He was going to finish making dinner.
::Sing4Me has left the Chat Room.::
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Anzu Mazaki sat at her computer desk, staring at the screen in a bewildered manner. She had just entered the chat room and the only other person in there wasn't talking. She sighed and exited the chat room. "I guess Lonely_Heart0604 wants to stay lonely," she whispered to herself.
"Anzu! Anzu! Your mother says dinner's done."
The brunette turned to see Rebecca Hopkins. Rebecca was an eight-year-old with an exceptional IQ. She attended courses that were at a college level. But in the evenings, she stayed at the Mazaki house due to the fact that her parents worked very late.
"Your mother says dinner's done," Rebecca repeated.
Anzu nodded. "Alright. Tell her I'll be down in a minute."
Rebecca nodded and left the room quickly.
The teen sighed and clicked the 'sign off' button.
