The blonde narrowed his eyes at the large crevice as he hooked the rope around his waist in its loop and lowered himself down. The light became faint as he eased his way into the darkness. Once his feet hit solid ground, Jou shrugged the makeshift harness off and followed the faint chanting in the distance, taking note of the number of twists and turns in the caverns.
"Jou? JOU WAIT UP!" he heard his companion screech from above. Jou mentally cursed himself for his forgetfulness as he waited for his friend to scramble after him, slipping on the rocks and landing on his posterior with a painful thump. Jou couldn't help but smile at
Yugi as he shook out the huge layer of dust that had suddenly accumulated in his strange tri coloured mane of hair. He shook his head but waited for Yugi to catch up with him before resuming on their trek.
"Yugi you do know we're on the trail of a bloodthirsty tribe don't you?"
"That's why you need someone to watch your back Jou." Yugi chirped. "Besides, you know me; despite what I say I never miss out on an adventure"
"If you can call it that" Jou chuckled. They decided to stop talking as they ventured deeper into the cavern. They eventually came to a point where no light at all could penetrate the darkness. Yugi yelped and clutched Jou's brown leather jacket as he saw a figure sitting at the foot of the entrance of the cave. Jou grimaced at the ragged skeleton but proceeded in stripping the skeleton of its dusty rags, wrapping some around a femur and lighting it with a match. He spared a glance at Yugi's horrified face as he held the torch above them.
Jou shrugged. "Hey, we need it more than he does." he reasoned. Yugi didn't look convinced; he merely went back to clutching onto Jou's jacket. Jou chuckled. He would have called Yugi a wimp for doing what he did but the young man showed his courage by always sticking by him- unlike other accomplices that had come and gone (in one way or another). Because of that, Jou had learnt to respect Yugi as a friend. He stuffed the rest of the rags into a pouch that always hung on his side and they proceeded on their journey. Jou swallowed nervously as he walked down a passageway and the bone torch revealed the bloody handprints on the walls. Some were fresh and red raw whilst others were fading into dusty brown. He heard a slight whimper from Yugi but ignored it. The chanting became louder and the light from many torches seemed to cast a reddish glow in the distance.
"I don't like this Jou…" Yugi said, tugging on Jou's leather jacket as he stared fearfully at the end of the tunnel. "I really don't like this…" Jou took a deep breath as his acknowledgement towards Yugi's warning but continued on. Jou cocked his brown felt hat, as he looked down at the rows of rows of people all men who had covered their tanned bodies in a white pasty paint. Other than loincloths the people were pretty much naked as they chanted towards the snake headed god before them.
"Snakes" he groaned to himself, "Why snakes? Why not cute little furry bunny rabbits? Or gerbils? Why does it always have to be snakes?"
"See? You hate snakes… Snakes have always been a bad sign for you. All the more reason why we should abort the mission right away, right? Right?" Yugi whispered to him. Jou grinned as he looked over at the panicky boy. He was still amazed that the boy was the same age as he for he maintained the look and stature of an adorable ten year old with huge baby eyes that screamed cuteness. The only thing really distinguishing him otherwise was his tenor voice... that and occasionally, when he got really angry, he would appear to grow a foot taller and his eyes would narrow angrily. Jou sometimes wondered if the boy slouched most of the time or something but decided not to dwell on it. He needed his thoughts in order to pay attention to what was going on. The leader had appeared in a skull with long protruding fangs. To Jou it looked like the skull of a huge snake combined with a feathered mask. Holding a large python in his hands the man bowed toward the huge stone statue. Jou's eyes widened as he heard a struggle and watched two figures being dragged in front of the worshippers. One of the men was rather heavily built perhaps like a bodyguard; he had dark muggy blond hair and a torn up khaki shirt and trousers. The second was a young man probably no older than Jou was himself; he was lithe in build with well-toned but not overdone muscles. His shirt was ripped, exposing a taut stomach and a nipple and black pants wrapped tightly around his legs. He had ruffled and dusty chocolate brown hair, possibly from being manhandled by the shaman of the tribe; but his most prominent and beautiful feature were the two startling blue eyes that finished the look of a really hot looking pretty boy in Jou's opinion. "Hey that's Seto Kaiba- that rich billionaire prodigy!" Yugi exclaimed, his previous fear forgotten. Jou flinched at the name Kaiba and immediately anger seemed to well up as it always did with anybody associated with the name. He growled to himself. "What's he doing here?" Jou didn't say a word but looked over the cavern.
"Don't know don't care…" Jou said getting ready to go down. "He can distract them while I get the stones…"
"You don't sound like you like him very much…"
"Not really since he's supposed to be the main instigator that shut my research project down last year. Took away the funding so they could build this war machine or something. Freaking bastards" Jou grimaced, narrowing his eyes at the blue-eyed brunette.
"He's cute though" Yugi giggled. Jou half-heartedly glared at his companion but decided to concentrate on the job at hand and scan the premises. He had been to the Orosini tribe's hiding place before to try and steal the two-twin jade coloured stones hidden carefully within the eyes of the statue they revered as their god. Last time he attempted it he had been caught and to any man it seemed to be suicide to try for it again after barely getting out of the place alive but Jounouchi Katsuya had never been known to back away from a challenge. "Um… Jou, about this tribe… do the Oreo tribe… are they anything like that… Yakult tribe in the Amazon?"
"The Yakuma tribe? Well no the Orosini aren't cannibals like the
Yakuma… They consider eating human meat impure…" Jou replied matter- of-factly.
"Oh good…" Yugi said in relief. "For a moment I thought they were going to eat Kaiba and his bodyguard"
"They may not like eating them but the Orosini are pretty big on human sacrifices. This particular branch worships the God Lýgion (1) so obviously they'll probably sacrifice Kaiba and his bodyguard to a bunch of snakes. Apparently, it's a great mark of respect"
"You seem to know a lot about this" Yugi said sceptically.
"I've uh… hehe… had first hand experience with it. Apparently I was given the highest level of honour by them… a sort of a… blind date with their God" Jou replied sheepishly and then cringed. `Who was in heat' he added as an afterthought. Yugi shook his head in disbelief but grabbed Jou's jacket.
"Oh Kami that's terrible… Jou you have to save them!" Jou cocked an eyebrow.
"Me? Why me?" Jou whispered.
"Jou!" Yugi scowled. "We can't let them get killed!" Jou rolled his eyes and nodded as he climbed down.
"Alright, alright; don't start pulling your hair out. I'm going" Jou slipped past the crevice, wondering what to do with the situation; he had originally come for the usual snatch and run and was not in the mood for heroics. Despite this he moved as swiftly and stealthily as he could, catching glimpses of Kaiba being pulled by the hair. Jou kept to the shadows as he climbed down. He remembered the glow of the two serpent eyes when he had been in the same position as the two men below; the stones would start to glow, sealing the fate of the sacrifice. All he had to do was remove the stones and hopefully delay the verdict long enough for him to save Kaiba. He managed to slip past without a single alarm and climbed high onto the statue.
Grabbing a bowie knife from his left pouch he started gouging the stone from the eye when it suddenly flashed green. He gasped and almost slipped. It looked like a verdict had been made and the bodyguard was being dragged towards a large hole that had suddenly opened up. It was about ten feet deep so there was no chance of the man getting out. It was then that Jou felt the statue rumble. The huge serpentine mouth opened and an outpouring of snakes cascaded down towards the pit. The bodyguard screamed and writhed underneath the rippling pile of hissing scaly legless reptiles. A cry of elation sounded from the group as the Orosini tribe rose, pounding their spears on the floor and stamping their feet as the struggling and frantic screaming became weak and soon diminished to nothing. Jou caught a glance of the horror on Yugi's face; the boy had covered his mouth to keep from screaming. He then looked down at Kaiba; the boy had paled at the awful death of his bodyguard and seemed to struggle more fervently as the tribesmen dragged him closer to the pit. Jou decided to carry on and thankfully the eye was dislodged easily this time. He tucked it securely into his pouch before he scrambled over to the other side and made quick work with the other. After an agonizing five minutes the large jade orb started to heave out of the socket. A head shot out from the hole and tried to latch onto Jou.
The orb slipped from his fingers and shattered upon the stone floor.
There was a silence as everyone's attention focused on him whilst the snake that tried to strike him hissed violently in his face. Its beady eyes stared unblinkingly whilst its black body swayed a little as if trying to hypnotize the blonde into moving. Jou knew full well to hold his breath and not move but found it difficult when the snake started flicking its deadly forked tongue, licking him on the cheek.
Obviously it seemed to relish the taste of the sweat for it licked him once more. Suddenly there was a huge uproar from the tribe; the snake was distracted and Jou scrambled over the statue. Kaiba stared wide eyed, but it was then that that the leader- angered by the sacrilegious assault on their god- picked up the trussed up brunette and threw him towards the pit of snakes and his now dead body guard.
Jou had leapt off of the statue at the same time and dove to catch
Kaiba, just missing the deadly snap of snakes that had managed to slither their way out of the snake pit.
"JOU! COME ON!" Yugi yelled not bothering to hide his existence as he dropped the rope to the cave entrance. All Jou had to do was try to get past the huge crowd of spear holding Orosinis. Cutting Seto's bonds he grabbed the gun at his right and shot into the air, stunning the group before he barged his way through.
"Who are you?" Seto whispered weakly.
"Seriously dead unless you move your rich ass Kaiba" Jou rasped, pushing Seto up to scramble up towards the entrance. Yugi pulled Seto up and the three of them hurried back into the tunnel that they just came from, not bothering to try and see through the light since Jou had memorized the way. They passed the skeleton and climbed as the Orosini climbed behind them, throwing their spears and trying to pull them back down. Being the most physically exhausted out of the three of them Seto slipped on the rocks and would have fallen had Jou not caught him. Yugi was the first to clamber out of the hole followed by
Jou and finally Seto. They got into the jeep parked nearby and Yugi supported Seto whilst Jou started the car to life. They drove away just as the Orosini came screaming at them. After releasing their
Pent up breaths and letting the adrenaline rush drain from their bodies, the three relaxed and drove on. Jou glanced at the brunette who was still looking a little pale from the experience-before he concentrated on the rocky road. They stopped finally at the safety of the river. "Just rest up here while I get us a drink" Jou said to the two before he skidded down with a canteen.
"Hi. I'm Yugi… and that's my friend Katsuya but you could call him Jou." Yugi chirped and then pouted as Seto promptly ignored the overly cheerful boy to gaze absently at the blonde filling up his canteen with water. Seto, in the haze of exhaustion and pain, hadn't gotten a good look at the boy's face. It was at that moment that Jou removed the felt hat, revealing sweaty but shiny sun kissed hair and two brown eyes. Jou took a swig out of the canteen and then poured the water over his heated tanned face. Brushing his hair back, Jou refilled the canteen. He was sporting a khaki shirt that had become grimy from sweat and mud and a leather jacket and loose trousers. On his left he had a gun holster and a pouch holding his bowie knife and the precious orb that he had managed to steal. Seto frowned when the blonde plopped the hat back onto his head hiding the beautiful face but was snapped out of his reverie when the boy next to him started screaming.
"EEK!!!" Yugi shrieked suddenly.
"What is it Yug?" Jou asked. Yugi ran down towards him and showed a bite wound on his arm. Jou looked over at the jeep and a snake slithered out from the car. Seto's eyes widened and it was then that he noticed two puncture marks on his thigh. `Was I bitten when I was daydreaming? I didn't feel any pain or anything…'suddenly he felt a little sick and clutched at his stomach, trying to prevent the bile from rising up.
"I-i-i-is it poisonous?" Yugi whimpered.
"Do you feel nauseous?"
"… Yes…" Yugi said with hesitation. Seto suddenly rubbed his arms a little as he felt a chill come over him. Cold sweat started to drip from his face.
"Cold?"
"…Yes…" Yugi whimpered rubbing his arms. Jou chuckled.
"Don't worry Yugi; if you really were poisoned you would have fainted by now" it was at that moment that they heard the body slump to the floor. Jou pushed the unconscious brunette over and noticed the ugly black wound surrounding two puncture marks on his thigh. "Crap…"
TBC…
(1) Lýgion means son of snakes in Tolkien's elvish Sindarin. ^___^
