Sacrifices to Ra
Yami grinned as he walked up the stairs to the museum. `Isis won't allow me to come near her if I look like this. I think a little change is in order. I'll change into my High Priest. She won't question if Seto Kaiba pays her an unexpected visit.”
The pharaoh transformed into Seto Kaiba's appearance as he climbed the steps in the shadows. He opened the door to the museum and walked up to the desk.
“I'd like to see Isis Ishtar. Now.”
“Name?”
Seto narrowed his eyes. “Don't you know who I am? I'm Seto Kaiba!”
The guard bowed his head. “Sincerest apologies! I will phone Ms. Ishtar and tell her you are here.”
“Make it snappy. I don't have time to waste. I'm a busy man, you know.”
“Yes, Mr. Kaiba!” the guard picked up the phone and dialed Isis. Seto looked around and sighed deeply in frustration.
He paused and breathed again.
“Tomb Robber…what is he doing here? I can sense him approaching…..I must finish this before he gets to me…I'm going to see Isis. Tell her to expect me and I do not wish for us to be disturbed by anyone.”
“Yes, sir, Mr. Kaiba.”
****************************
Isis studied the artifact in her hands carefully. “Remarkable specimen….where did you find it?”
“Hawara,” her assistant said. “We have dated the spearhead to be around five thousand years old.”
Isis raised her eyebrow. “That must have been during Yami's reign. Marik and Bakura are five thousand years old.”
The phone rang on her desk. “Pardon me.” She picked up the phone. “Isis here.”
“Ma'am, Seto Kaiba has arrived. He is on his way to see you.”
“Seto Kaiba? I thought he was on his honeymoon with Joey. Why would he come here? Tell him to come in.”
Seto Kaiba opened the door to Isis' office. “Isis, I need to speak with you.”
“Okay. Halima, return this to the archives.”
The woman grabbed the artifacts and scurried out of the room.
Isis looked at Seto Kaiba, who remained across the room. “I'm amazed to see you here. I thought you were on your honeymoon with Joey.”
“I left the mutt outside. This won't take long.”
Isis stepped back when she heard his deep voice. `My Necklace couldn't detect his approach! He must be able to hinder the powers of my Millennium Necklace! But how?'
Seto grinned. “It's nice to finally be able to meet you face to face again, Isis. It's been a long time.”
Isis narrowed her eyes. “You're not Seto Kaiba.”
Seto chuckled and approached her slowly. She backed away, keeping a vigilant eye on the fiend before her. “Very perceptive.”
Seto's appearance disintegrated until Yami stood before her.
“What is it that you want?”
Yami grinned. “You stand in my way, Isis. And I am going to see that you are…..eliminated.”
Isis' eyes widened and she backed away. “You are interfering with the magic of my Millennium Necklace!”
“I'm afraid so. You see, I can't have you interfering with my plans, Isis. Since you can tell the future with that Necklace of yours, it can show the world the reality of my supposed `mighty' reign. I cannot let the word spread of my true nature. That wouldn't be a good idea.”
Isis narrowed her eyes. “I don't need my Necklace to prove the kind of ruler you are. I have documents and forensic evidence which more than I need.”
Yami growled and extended his arm to the door. Isis' desk flew to the door, blocking her exit out of the room. “That is what I must prevent. Nobody must know the truth. And I cannot have you warning anyone as to what my plans are. I will not let you warn anyone about my plans.”
Isis backed away, remaining tense. “I know you plan on killing Aria and Aten.”
“So perceptive! They reach eighteen in three years. My time is almost up. Soon it will be our destiny to once again fight. I will be fighting to save the world from them.”
“I highly doubt that those kids are the evil ones here, Yami.”
“Oh, but they are, Isis! Everyone is too blind to see. But it is going to be alright. Aria will not survive long enough to fight me. This pregnancy will kill her.”
Isis gasped. “She just lost an infant!”
Yami grinned. “So what? I'm not going to be defeated by a meddling girl anymore! I never saw a woman with a spirit as strong as Aria. She is fearless.”
“She gets that from her father.”
“Quite true. I can't have you warning anyone about my plans, Isis.”
**************************
Bakura and Marik exited the car outside of the Domino Museum. The yami's eyes narrowed a low growl emanated from his throat. “The pharaoh is near.”
Malik looked at the Millennium Ring laying against his chest. “But the pointers are not detecting the Puzzle.”
Bakura seethed. “I don't need the Ring to tell me when that snake is nearby. Can't you smell him?”
Malik took a deep breath. “All I smell is car exhaust and hot air.”
The yami looked around the crowded street. Vendors were announcing their wares. The hot sun poured down on the city.
Bakura growled. “He has to be in here! I hope we're not too late!”
Bakura darted up the steps.
Maxine stepped out of the car. “I'll stay here with the car, Malik.”
“Thanks, Maxie. We'll be back as soon as we can.”
Malik ran up the steps, chasing the quick yami. He ran into the doors of the museum and looked around.
Bakura was gone.
“Bakura? Bakura?! Where did he go so fast?”
Malik ran up to the desk. “Did you see a guy with white spiky hair run in here?”
The security guard shrugged. “I haven't seen anyone with spiky hair.”
Malik shook his head. “Well, Bakura is a master at breaking into many places unseen. I need to see my sister, Isis Ishtar.”
The guard raised an eyebrow. “She's in a meeting with a very important client.”
“Who?”
“Seto Kaiba.”
Malik gasped. “Seto Kaiba?! Go help my sister! She's in danger!”
“She's not in danger, sir. There's no way that anyone could endanger her life.”
The guard flipped a switch on the monitor. Seto Kaiba walked into the view of the camera. Malik watched Seto Kaiba approach the desk.
[I'd like to see Isis Ishtar. Now.]
Malik squinted and looked at the purple eyes of the CEO….
“Seto doesn't have purple eyes! SIS!”
Malik ran past the desk.
“Hey, you! STOP!”
***************************
Bakura ran down the hallway towards Isis' office. He turned the door to her office and pushed, but the door wouldn't open.
“RA DAMN IT! ISIS! OPEN UP!”
Yami turned his head sharply. “Bakura….damn you!”
Yami extended his arm and shot a bolt of energy at the desk. Isis ducked as the desk and the door shattered.
Bakura's body flew back onto the ground by the force of the blast. The yami growled and struggled to his feet.
Yami stood at the doorway. “What are you doing here, Tomb Robber?”
“Saving Isis. What does it look like?”
“You cannot save her.”
Bakura struggled to his feet. “I won't let you hurt Isis!”
Yami grinned. “I got what I needed from her. I'm done.”
“You bastard! Give her back her Shadow Powers!”
“Or what will happen? You think you are going to stop me from carrying out my destiny?”
The white-haired yami scowled. “Destiny? What do you know about destiny?”
The pharaoh stepped through the threshold of the door, stepping over the broken pieces of the shattered and splintered desk. “My destiny is to have you once again, Itemri. My destiny is to be the savior of the world.”
“You are delusional if you believe that!”
“I am not mad! I'm more sane than I have ever been in my life!”
Bakura removed his dagger and pointed the blade towards Yami. “Give her back her Shadow Magic now!”
“Or what? You're going to try to attack me with that blade? Come on, Itemri….attack me.”
“ISIS!” Malik called as he ran down the hallway. The blond hikari stopped short behind Bakura. “Yami, let me see my sister!”
Yami stepped aside. “Go see what is left of her, Malik.”
The Egyptian hikari felt his heart leap into his chest as he ran past Yami. He ran through the doorway and was thrown back by an invisible barrier.
Bakura leapt and caught the hikari before he could fall to the floor. “What did you do, you son of a bitch?”
Yami chuckled. “Do you think I'd make it easy for you to get to her, Malik?”
Malik growled as Bakura helped him stabilize on his feet. “I want to see Isis, Yami! If you hurt my sister, I will grab your nuts and tear them off myself!”
Bakura raised an eyebrow in shock. That sounded more of a Marik statement rather than something that Malik would ever dream of saying.
//How come everything with the Ishtars begins and ends with the nutsack????! If it's not their Rod their obsessed with, it's that! Ishtars….can't live with them, can't have hot sex without them.//
The pharaoh crossed his arms. “You couldn't come near me, mortal. Without your yami and his powers to protect you, you are vulnerable.”
Bakura growled. “He's right,” he whispered angrily. “Without our powers, Marik and I can't defend you. We'd have to resort to strength.”
“I'm going in there, Yami!” Malik charged at the room and once again bounced off into Bakura's waiting arms.
“Yami, let Malik in to see Isis!” Bakura growled.
“Fine. Go see her. This is becoming less amusing.”
Malik clenched his fists. “Let me see her!”
The pharaoh leaned against the wall. “Go ahead.”
Malik walked slowly up to the door and stopped at the doorway. Yami continued to grin at him mischievously.
Malik stepped carefully into the room and found Isis kneeling on the floor. He ran to her and kneeled beside her. The man wrapped his arms around his sister and kissed her cheek.
“Sister! Oh, sister! I'm so glad you're okay!”
Isis looked up at her brother, her eyes and body looked weak. “Mal----ik.”
Malik held her against him. “Don't worry, sis! I'll take care of you.”
Yami grinned. “What a touching moment. Wouldn't you agree, Bakura?”
“What threat was she to you?”
“She could have warned a lot of people about my plans. That I cannot have, Bakura.”
“How many more innocent people have to suffer because of you, pharaoh?!”
Yami narrowed his eyes at Bakura. “As many people as required.”
“You sick, bastard!”
“I'm not sick, Bakura. I see the truth. I must eliminate all who stand in my way….your daughter included. I heard she lost her infant. Too bad, Bakura.”
Bakura clutched the dagger in his hand. “Give me one reason why I should not slit your throat!”
Yami grinned. “Because if you kill me now, you will not find the counter spell to save your daughter's life.”
“What do you mean?”
“Her next pregnancy will be her downfall. She has already signed her own death sentence.”
Malik held onto Isis tightly. “You leave Aria alone! We will find a cure with or without your help, Yami!”
“I beg to differ. Nobody can find a cure for this! This magic is not a commoner's magic,” Yami snarled at Bakura. “This is Royal Magic….known only to the royalty in Egypt. It is not meant for use by the common rabble.”
Bakura trembled with fury. “That's it!”
Bakura raised his knife and lunged for Yami as a barrier knocked him back into the wall.
Malik ran for Bakura and helped the yami sit up.
“I have what I need. Now I must hunt Shaadi down….He is the last victim on my list.”
Yami turned and walked out of the room as the security guards ran down the hallway.
The pharaoh stopped.
“Stop or we'll shoot!” the guards called out.
Malik's head snapped up as he looked at the men with their guns pointed in their direction. “No! Don't shoot!”
The pharaoh shrugged. “Try to hit me, you fools!”
Yami darted towards the men as the guards fired.
Malik quickly pulled Bakura out of the path of the firing bullets and held him as the bullets poured into the room from the hallway.
“Where'd he go?” the men gasped a moment later.
Yami had disappeared.
Malik looked over at Isis looking weary at the other side of the room. “Sister? Are you okay?”
“Yes,” she said tiredly. “I will be fine. I just need…to…relax.”
Isis fell over on the floor.
Malik ran over to her and Bakura struggled to his feet.
The guard swarmed into the room and pinned Bakura to the wall.
“You are under arrest for breaking and entering and assault on Ms. Ishtar!”
“I just saved her life, you ingrateful bastards! If I had been here one second later, Isis would be dead! That's gratitude for you!”
Malik clutched onto Isis tightly. “I came to help my sister! I'm not leaving her!”
One of the guards broke away from the crowd. “I know you! Relax, boys. He is her brother. He's been here before.”
Malik looked down at his sister. “Bakura, we need to get my sister home. Can you go get Maxine to help?”
Bakura nodded and ran from the room.
“Sister, I'm so sorry! If only we could have been here sooner. Don't worry, though, Bakura and I will take good care of you.”
**************************
Isis opened her eyes and looked up at the eyes of Bakura. “Where's my brother? Where am I? Bakura? What are you doing here?”
Bakura dipped a washcloth into cold water and touched her forehead with it. “Your brother is in the museum library looking for a way to save my little girl.”
“What's wrong with her?”
“That bastard Yami placed a curse on her that she could not bear a living offspring. That is why she had the miscarriage and lost Kailani.”
Isis sighed. “That poor girl. That must have been terrible for her.”
Bakura nodded. “Yes. All of us were upset about the loss. But Umi hasn't left her side since he asked to marry her.”
Isis smiled. “When are they planning their wedding?”
“After Aten and Robbie get married. They're getting married next week. Then the next day is Aria and Umi's wedding. The boys' bachelor party is this week.”
Isis laughed. “I heard about the stripper incident with Anzu, Bakura.”
Bakura raised an eyebrow. “Stipper Anzu? Isis, I just ate.”
“She stripped for Kaiba on his table and everyone scurried from the room.”
“That was a long time ago!”
Isis nodded. “My brother called me that night in horror.”
“I don't plan to get the boys female strippers. The last thing I need to handle is Robbie throwing his guts up and Aten going into a flashback.”
Isis nodded. “Robbie would throw up at the sight of a woman naked?”
“No, he's not as bad as Seto.”
“The poor High Priest. How is my nephew?”
Bakura dipped the cloth in water again. “He's seeing Mr. Cullen now. He can't go to school anymore. He's pretty much homebound.”
Isis looked up at Bakura. “It's a shame he has so little time left.”
“Yeah,” Bakura said biting his lip. “That's really hard for Ryou. The worst part is when Aten pines his pills up on the table every morning and yet that damn angina still gets him.”
“Robbie will take good care of him, Bakura. I hope Marik can see that.”
Bakura nodded. “Robbie's a good kid. He's never been a trouble-maker. He walks with a cane now. Some punks kidnapped him and beat him to a bloody pulp. They caused a little bit of brain damage, but Robbie still goes on. Every now and then he gets temporary shaking of his right hand. But it's nothing that interferes with him on a constant basis.”
“Robbie's a strong-willed person. He'll get through this.”
Bakura stood up and walked to the window. He looked down at the city illuminated by electricity.
“It feels good to be home, Isis. The city has changed so much since those five thousand years have passed.”
“Change is inevitable, Bakura. We have to embrace it.”
Bakura looked down. “I have always resisted change. It's always been hard for me.”
“But you have changed dramatically, Bakura. You're no longer the cruel tyrant to Ryou.”
“No, but I can never take that back.”
Isis sat up slowly. “But Ryou has forgiven you.”
“It's not easy to forgive, Isis. Not what I did. But I tried to set things right.”
“You tried, Bakura. Not many people would make amends willingly.” She walked over to him slowly and looked down at the city. “Our father never made amends to my brother for making him endure the carvings on his back. He never tried to make it right. Marik just came out and slew him in front of my brother. No remorse. He was not apologetic about performing the ritual.”
Bakura crossed his arms. “At least my dad tossed me out of the house at four years old. He didn't lay a hand on me.”
Bakura looked over the city. “Ryou,” he sighed heavily.
*********************************
Malik flipped through another book of spells and shoved it to the side. “This isn't helpful! I have to try something else!”
Malik climbed the ladder to the top row of scrolls. He wiped his forehead free of sweat from being in the hot room.
He carried the heavy scroll down and read the inscription: Magic of Royal.
“Royal Magic! This might be it!”
Malik opened the scroll and read the text. “Yami must know all of these by heart! Let's see….'Royal Magic' is taught to the pharaoh's of Egypt to protect their people.'”
Maxine flipped through a translated text. “You found something?”
“I think I did. It says here that Royal Magic is harder to break than Common Magic. I didn't know commoners had any access to magic. Common magic was weaker and there was always a cure. Royal Magic was unbreakable.”
“Well, naturally the pharaoh would want to teach his enemies a lesson they would never forget. Hence the strength of their magic.”
“True. Royal Magic can not be undone by words or spells. Damn! How are we going to break
the curse on Aria if we can't cite a chant?!”
Maxine looked up at the blond. “A curse?”
“Yami put a curse on Aria that she can't bear a living child. She lost two babies and I want to make sure she doesn't lose a third in the future.”
Maxine grabbed another translated book from the shelf. “My heart stopped then I saw Xiao-Shen in front of that truck. I owe Aten and Robbie a debt of gratitude.”
“That was brave of them.”
Maxine sat down. “What else does it say about Royal Magic?”
“It says that there's no known way to break the spell of Royal Magic. Everyone who has tried to break the spell had died before they were able to decipher the code to curing Royal Magic.”
Maxine gasped. “Died?”
“Evidently the pharaohs were insistent on making sure that only they had access to a strong power over their people. They kept their secret safe from any of those below them.”
“Then how do we break the spell?”
“You don't,” a deep voice resonated in the room.
Malik looked up and saw Yami by the door. “YAMI!”
Maxine jumped out of her chair. “What are you doing here? How did you get in?”
“I am everywhere. I am all-knowing.”
“You are a cold-hearted bastard, Yami! What is it that you want?”
Yami grinned. “You are trying to find the secret to breaking a Royal Magic spell.”
“I want to save Aria!”
Yami chuckled. “Aria? She has already signed her own death sentence.”
“What do you mean?”
“You are out of time. The Book of Prophecy has stated that her body has already begun to form the next victim of my curse. That girl is more fertile than the Nile Valley.”
Malik narrowed his eyes. “Are you saying Aria's pregnant again?”
Yami grinned. “Her son will be her downfall.”
The blond stepped back. “A son?”
“Yes. But the baby boy will not only die….she will die, too. This will be difficult for her and she will lose her life in the end.”
“How dare you prey on an innocent girl?!” Maxine yelled at Yami.
“I do what I please. I control Life and Death. I have sentenced her to a painful, bloody death.”
Maxine charged at Yami and he shot an energy ball at her, throwing her back into the shelves. Maxine landed on the floor unconscious. Books and scrolls fell around them.
Malik ran to her side. “You monster!”
“I'm not the monster here, Malik Ramses Ishtar. I am the savior of the world, eliminating a threat and the threat of generations to come.”
“One of these days, Yami, you are going to get what is coming to you! And I'm going to be right there cheering those kids on! You don't deserve the title of pharaoh! I'm embarrassed to say that I helped to guard your tomb.”
“That's on you, Ishtar. I sentenced the family to watch my tomb for punishment for Marik's treachery of the Noble Class. Do you think I care about your embarrassment?”
Malik grit his teeth. “Give my sister and everyone else back their Shadow Powers!”
“Or else what?”
The blond looked over and grabbed a spear. “I'll fight you!”
Yami chuckled. “What do you think you're going to do with that, little boy?”
“I'm going to get rid of you for Yugi's sake and to save my niece!”
Malik charged at Yami and the pharaoh grabbed the spear. Yami kicked Malik in the stomach, but the blond refused to get rid of the weapon.
Malik punched Yami in the gut, spun around, and kicked Yami back, making him release his grip on the spear.
Yami rolled out of the way as the spear stabbed the place where he had laid.
Malik raised the spear over his head and Yami kicked him between his legs.
The blond collapsed, leaning on the spear.
Yami stood up and grabbed the blond's hair. “I didn't think you could take me on!”
The pharaoh punched Malik in the jaw hard and sent him flying back.
He grabbed the spear and stood over the fallen hikari.
He looked down at his enemy and growled. “It's only fair if you bleed to death like Aria will. Then you will be out of my way!”
Yami plunged the spear in Malik's shoulder, making the blond cry out and scream in pain. Blood started to seep from the wound.
Malik breathed heavily as he was pinned to the ground.
“How does that feel?”
“Pain….Yami!”
Yami grinned. “I think it's only fair that I offer you and Maxine to the gods. I will sacrifice you and her as my offerings to the Great God Ra.”
Malik closed his eyes and fell into unconsciousness.
Yami walked to the shelf full of scrolls and books. “Ra, accept these sacrifices of flesh and blood.”
A small flame appeared at Yami's fingertip. He touched one of the scrolls and watched it as it slowly started to burn.
“My work here is done.”
*****************************
Isis poured another cup of tea for Bakura. “My brother has been gone for a long time.”
Bakura shrugged and sipped the tea. “There's a lot of scrolls to go through. I wanted to make sure you were okay before going over to give him a hand.”
“Will my brother be okay?”
“Maxine's with him. She can handle it.”
Bakura sniffled. “This tea smells…a little bitter. It's different than the last cup.”
Isis smelled it. “It does…doesn't it?”
Bakura lifted his head and sniffed. “It's not the tea. Something smells like it's burning.”
Isis walked to the window. “I don't see anything.”
The phone rang on her table. She picked it up. “Isis Ishtar.”
[LADY ISIS, FIRE! IN THE MUSEUM!]
“Fire! Bakura! The museum's on fire! Malik!”
Bakura dropped the tea cup and ran down the hallway.
He bolted out of the apartment building and pushed his way through the crowd assembled to watch the flames.
Bakura ran to the front of the crowd and saw the smoke and flames rising from the lower level.
His heart leapt into his throat.
“MALIK! I'LL SAVE YOU!”
