Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Kaiba Brothers ❯ Promise ( Prologue )

The little blueish/green haired boy was sitting on the park bench, swinging his legs. Next to him was a lonely briefcase, so much like himself. Never earning the attention it deserved. The boy was the same. Semi-transperant and impossible to see with the naked eye unless to his liking, he'd been alone for years. He was a ghost, and of little importance in this modern world.

The only reason he'd remained was the man he'd loved his whole life. His father was the only parent he had, since his mother had died before he got a chance to know her. The man had cared for his only son as well as he could, despite his large company.

The attention hadn't been enough. At about nine, the boy had died. He didn't remember why. Did really care, either. He'd returned to this world, despite the pleas of other ghosts and angels. He may not have cared about his own death, but his father meant the world to him. He stayed around, watching his father, helping the man in small ways. He was never seen. Never noticed. Alone...

Then the father had adopted two boys. The ghost boy had been surprised at how much the older one resembled him. The living boy had brown hair, instead of the blueish/green of the boy who'd come before him. His eyes were a soulful blue, beautiful, as only innocent living children's eyes can be. The ghost had been jealous. His father had found a boy to replace hime. A boy to do to what the man could not bring himself to do to his own son. The brown-haired boy's eyes were no longer innocent. They never could be again.

The other boy, totally sweet and still untouched yet. He had deep black hair that went to the small of his back, and eyes only a slightly darker blue than those of his brother. He knew nothing of what had passed between the ghost's father and his own brother. He never quite understood that his own life was was in danger from the man he'd learned to love. Only his older brother truely cared at first, but the ghost's heart of cold ice had melted.

When the dreaded night came and the ghost followed the older brother to the youngest one's room, he was shocked and apalled. The young child had been chained to his own bed, and the ghost's father stood over him, an evil glint in his eyes. The ghost could have strangled him. So could the older boy have, but the father ordered the boy to his room. The ghost followed him, not wanting to see what he'd knew would happen. He had the need to comfort the other so like himself, but he hadn't yet learned to make himself visable to others, although he could be felt and return touch. He didn't want to scare the other.

So, the ghost only watched as his near twin curled up on the bed that the boy rarely slept in, his body shaking as silent tear drew lines on his face. They could hear the youngest scream, and the ghost bit back his own tears. He'd learned to love the young one, see him as a little brother, even. He hated seeing the older of the two cry, as well. He felt more alone than he'd ever felt before, in life, or death.

When the brown-haired one pushed the ghost's father from the window in the man's office the next morning, the ghost was glad to see him go. As the man's spirit rose from his body, the ghost watched coldly.

'My son...' The father whispered.

'I am not your son.' The ghost had replied sharply. 'I cannot be your son after this. I will not.' The man's face fell.

The living boy's words forced both spirits to look at him. He was sobbing. "I'm so sorry..." He whispered. "I'm so, so sorry... And, I forgive you, for everything. I forgive you..." Then he ran from the room, to tell the guards that the father had fallen. Fallen out his own window.

The ghost looked back at his father. The man's features were filled with pain. 'Now what do you have to say?' The ghost boy had hissed.

The man sighed and met his son's eyes. 'I did not deserve him...' He shook his head as the boy was about to speak. 'No, no... I'll leave them in peace. I only wish to ask you one last thing.'

The ghost boy's eyes narrowed. 'What?' He asked darkly.

'Watch them. Protect them. Do what you can, but, please, don't let another abuse them. Don't let another do that to my boys. I-I cannot protect them any longer. That is up to you now. Will you?' The man asked softly, his body rising slowly to the heavens.

The ghost boy nodded quickly. 'Yes, my father. They'll be safe with me. That I'll promise, for all time.'

But they hadn't been. That bastard had stepped in, taken their souls, locked them away. The little ghost boy had felt lost and could do little more than sit in the older one's cell, watching his soulless body stare into the unknown. A creepy feeling, of course, but he'd had little else to do. He'd failed. He'd given his word, and he'd failed.

Then that boy had stepped in, saved the brothers. The ghost had been grateful, but a little annoyed still when he saw that the older brother would not allow his anger at an earlier defeat go and become friends with this kind, soft-hearted boy. The ghost had decided, on that day, that he'd find a way to show his living look-alike what friendship was, once again.

But, for now, the little ghost could do little more than sit on a solitary park bench and watch the two brothers laugh and play in the grass, something they rarely did, since the older brother had taken over the father's business. The older brother rarely showed his kind side, his light side. The ghost sighed as he watched them. 'I'm right here, my brothers. I'll be here for eternity, till the day fate allows us to meet. May that day come soon.' He whispered.

If only the little ghost knew how soon that day would come...

~~A/N: I'm evil, I know. Oh well...

I was reluctant, at first, to put this up, since it has overlaps from another one of my fics in this chapter. Seto's Pain hasn't gotten to this part yet, but, at the rate it's moving, it'll be there and done by the time the 3rd chapter, at the most, of this fic is up. So, don't worry about that... I'm working on it as you're reading this, unless I'm already done... *makes a face*

You'll find out who the ghost is in the first chapter, I promise! I'll have to tell everyone now, this ficcy has MAJOR SPOILERS for it!! This boy really did exist, and really is dead! I'm just bending his story to fit my own twisted mind... *sighes*

DISCLAIMER: Nope. Don't own Yu-Gi-Ou! So sorry... I want me to too...
