Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Kaiba Brothers ❯ Gold Bugs ( Chapter 1 )
Kaiba Seto sighed and leaned back in the grass, watching his brother, Mokuba, roll down the slight incline in the field. The CEO couldn't really remember the last time he'd had this much fun with his brother. His brother had decided to throw a fit and refuse to go to school that morning, so Seto had called in to the office and inform his secretary to take the day off, since he was doing the same. Half an hour later, Mokuba had come out and insisted on going to the park.
Seto had, reluctantly, agreed. He knew he could get arrested for allowing Mokuba to skip like this, but he also knew that he'd have no problem getting out of jail. After all, he'd learned from the best!
Seto groaned and closed his eyes as his thoughts drifted back to his adopted father. The bastard had pissed him off often enough, but he'd finally crossed the line. Seto crossed his line and killed the man. He regretted it only slightly. He often prayed that his adopted father forgave him, but he had gone too damn far.
"Oniisan!" Mokuba hopped onto Seto's chest, waking the other from his thoughts.
Seto opened his eyes and smiled up at his brother. "Hey there, kiddo." He said softly.
"Lookie what I found!" Mokuba proudly held out a gold scarab to his brother.
Seto maneuvered himself into a sitting position, without forcing Mokuba to move much, and took the scarab, to give it a closer look. He handed it back after a second. "It's very beautiful, Mokuba-chan." He said with the softest smile he gave these days.
Mokuba made a face. "I got it for you!" He complained.
Seto chuckled softly and took back the scarab. "Really? How sweet of you." He ruffled his brother's hair. "And, yes, I'm still mad at you." He added, knowing the reason for the gift.
Mokuba gave his brother a pouting look. "But, oniisan!!" He whined. "I hate school!!" He emphasized the word hate.
Seto hugged Mokuba lightly. "You keep saying this." He gave the other boy a soft push. "Go play."
Mokuba made one last face, then hurried up to chase a couple butterflies. Not even he had time to just play anymore. With Kaiba Corp as Seto's business, Mokuba was often working there after school. He didn't trust his older brother alone with the people at the office, not after the last stunt that had been played.
Seto suddenly remembered the briefcase he'd left on the park bench. ~Shit! My briefcase!~ He never went anywhere without it. He glanced up at the bench. A boy sat next to the briefcase, watching him.
At first, Seto was angry. The boy was staring at him, and Seto hated it when people did that. Also, the young CEO hated it when people knew his weaknesses, like his brother, or saw him acting soft-hearted, like now. Seto stood slowly. As he started towards the figure, he realized what else had been bothering him and stopped in his tracks.
The boy's appearance. He was just like Seto at nine or ten years old, except with blueish/green hair. He looked lonely, like Seto often felt. Of course, what really hit him, was that the boy wasn't solid. Seto let out a sigh. It was probably just a vision, but, still, he should go check on his briefcase. He figured it wouldn't hurt to talk to the vision, since he didn't see anyone else around.
Then the vision boy waved. Although he was smiling, he looked so sad, as if he didn't expect to be seen waving. As if he were playing a childish trick. Obviously, Seto had a strange look on his face, because the boy started laughing at the CEO. Seto was surprised to hear the boy's voice.
"Who the hell are you?" He asked darkly as he reached the bench.
The boy's eyes widened. He looked startled. "You mean... Can you see me, Seto?" He asked softly, his eyes pleading.
Seto pursed his lips. "Of course I can see you. Why would you ask such a question?" He asked, his voice chilled.
The boy sighed and hung his head. "You're not supposed to." He mumbled to the ground.
Seto let out a snort. "You think sitting next to my briefcase is going to hide you?" He asked sharply.
"It's not that simple to explain." The ghost countered quickly, looking back up into Seto's eyes.
Seto felt his center of balance change suddenly as their eyes met and locked. He had to balance himself on the bench to keep upright. "Whatever." Seto forced himself to look away, his heart putting up it's blocks, to keep it from being hurt again. "Who are you, anyway?" He asked, his voice harsh.
"Noa." The boy hopped of the bench, watching Seto carefully. "Kaiba Noa."
Seto looked at Noa, shocked. "Kaiba? But..."
Noa smiled slightly. "Gozaburo was my otosan, Seto. I died before he adopted you and Mokuba." His face fell as his spoke.
"You know a lot for a ghost." Seto commented lightly.
"I've been watching my father since my death." Noa's voice was cold. "When you killed him, I started watching you."
Seto narrowed his eyes at the other's tone. "You sound mad that I pushed that bastard out of his window." He hissed.
"He was my father." Noa returned. "Of course I'm mad at you!"
"And do you even know what he did to me? To Mokuba-chan?" Seto returned, his blue eyes boiling with anger.
Noa turned his head away from the hateful glare. "I know. I wish I could have prevented it, but I couldn't. I, therefore, failed, in my own mind."
Seto paused at the boy's confession. He knew he should be mad at this being, for having spied on him for so many years, watching his tears, his pain, his love, everything. But, he couldn't bring himself to yell at the ghost. Noa looked so sad, and he acted like he cared for the CEO and his younger brother. His mind flickered to stories he'd heard about ghosts in the past. "I'll bet you love playing tricks on humans, though." He grumbled, his voice softer than it would have normally been when he used that tone.
"Oniisan! What're you doing?!" Mokuba called, suddenly realizing his brother's absence.
Noa hopped back onto the bench, next to Seto's briefcase. "I don't cause trouble, I prevent it. I'll watch your stupid briefcase, I always do. Go play with Mokuba-kun." He looked annoyed.
Seto sighed. Despite everything he'd tried to fight it, he was quickly taking a liking to the ghost. "Why don't you come and join us, Noa?" He asked softly.
"I'm dead, genius." Noa replied dryly.
Seto shrugged. "Suit yourself." He turned and walked down to where Mokuba stood, watching him.
"Oniisan, your briefcase!" Mokuba cried out, pointing.
Seto turned back around. Noa had picked up the briefcase and was walking over to them. Seto had to smile. Mokuba probably only saw the floating briefcase. He accepted the briefcase from the ghost as Mokuba ran over. "Knew you'd join us." Seto chuckled, watching Noa for a reaction.
"Oniisan, who're you talking to?" Mokuba begged. He was starting to wonder about his brother's actions.
"Noa." Seto grinned. "He's a ghost who's been watching us for a while. I invited him to come over and hang out with us."
"You can see ghosts?" Mokuba had this look on his face that clearly said that he didn't believe his older brother. Too much stress.
"Might help if he could see me, baka." Noa pointed out darkly.
Seto made a face at Noa. "So? I'm sure you can fix that. How else would you protect my briefcase?" Seto shot back, his voice ice.
Noa growled something under his breath, the looked at Mokuba. "There. Better?"
Mokuba grinned, relieved his brother hadn't lost it. Unless he had too... Never mind. "I have a ghost friend!" He said happily.
Noa had a sour look on his face. "Don't push it, Mokuba-kun." He grumbled.
"Your name is Noa?" Mokuba asked. Noa nodded. Mokuba's eyes got a devilish glint in them. "Bet you can't catch me!" He turned and fled out into the field.
Noa sighed, but he looked perfectly happy. "Why me?" He grumbled fondly before running to chase after Mokuba, leaving Seto behind them.
"Keep an eye on him, Noa!" Seto called after the two. "Ototo-chan, don't go into the woods!" Then he sighed and sat in the grass. Something in his breast pocket thumped against his chest and he pulled it out. It was the gold scarab Mokuba had found. ~Hum... I'll make a necklace for it later...~ He decided, finding out that the forelegs were strong enough to hold even after much wear on them from a string, which was a relief. It was pretty, and he wanted to show Mokuba he liked it. Then he put it back in the pocket and went back to watching the ghost and his brother chase each other around the field.
