Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Kaiba Brothers ❯ Bedtime ( Chapter 2 )
Seto sat at his desk, messing around with some papers. Mokuba had gone to bed almost an hour ago, but the CEO was still working. Noa was sitting on Seto's bed, watching the living boy at the desk. He twirled a lock of his hair around his finger as Seto let out a sigh. "What are you doing, Seto?" Noa asked softly.
Seto startled and looked at the ghost darkly. "What does it look like I'm doing?" He asked, annoyed. He'd been so deep in thought that he'd forgotten the presence of the other. He turned back away.
Noa grimaced. "It's late. You should be sleeping. I swear you don't get enough sleep." He grumbled the last part under his breath, but Seto heard him anyway.
The CEO's eyes flashed as he spun his chair around to glare at the boy on his bed. "You would know that, wouldn't you?" He asked darkly. "You've been prying on others for so long, you don't even know when to get out!" His voice rose in anger.
Noa pursed his lips. "Check your temper, Seto. I can hurt you, but you can't hurt me. I don't have to be solid, and I'm dead anyway. I don't feel physical pain."
Seto narrowed his eyes. "Get out of my room, Noa." He hissed, his voice dangerous.
Noa shook his head. "Don't think so. You can't make me, and I'm not going anywhere until you're in bed, alseep."
Seto growled a rude word under his breath and turned back to his work. "I'm busy, Noa. I don't have time to fool around."
Noa rolled his eyes. "You know, I was ignored as a kid. No one saw me when I was a ghost, until today, unless I meant to let them see me, to scare the shit out of them. You acted kind to me this morning. Why can't you be kind to me now?" Despite his efforts, his voice cracked and he felt a shady tear make it's way down his face.
Seto stopped what he was doing and looked back at the spirit, his eyes soft. "Noa... Gomen. I let my temper take control of my actions. Forgive me?"
Noa pursed his lips, ignoring the tear he could still feel on his face. "Why should I?" He asked, his voice chilled. "Why should I ever forgive you?"
Seto knew this was about Gozaburo. "I didn't have a choice! I told you that!" He cried.
"You didn't have to push him out the fucking window!" Noa returned.
"What was I gonna do, have him arrested for child abuse? He got out the first time!" Seto hissed, lowering his voice when he remembered Mokuba.
"Oniisan? Noa-san?" Too late. Mokuba stood at Seto's room door, watching the two. "Why're you fighting?"
"No reason." Seto said softly, turning back to his desk.
Noa pursed his lips at the older brother. "Old arguement. Go back to bed, Moku-kun." Mokuba had expressed a wish earlier to just be called Moku, instead of Mokuba.
Mokuba crossed his arms over his chest. "Not until you two promise to go to bed too!" He returned, sounding as adult-like as he could.
Noa grinned as Seto groaned. "I don't need sleep." Noa chuckled. "Seto on the other hand..." He looked at the working boy.
Seto let out a sharp curse and threw his pen into the wall in front of him, his patiance run out. The other two stopped smiling and looked at him as he turned around, his eyes pissed. "Get out of my room, now." He hissed.
Noa stood from the bed and got between the brothers. "It's not your room, it's otosan's, Seto." He mumbled, then looked at Mokuba. "Moku-kun, go to bed."
"But..." Mokuba looked upset.
"Bed." Noa's voice was final. He followed the boy to the door, then closed and locked it when he was sure Mokuba was in his room. He turned around.
Seto was frozen stiff in fear. ~Oh, Kami...~ His mind flew back to every other time he'd heard that door lock. He never locked it anymore.
Noa frowned. "Seto? What is it?" He asked, worried.
"Please, unlock the door, Noa..." Seto whispered, trying to keep his voice under control.
Noa shrugged and did so. When he looked back, Seto had calmed some. "Why'd you want the door unlocked?" He asked, walking over to where Seto was moving to the bed.
Seto curled up against the headboard, his knees to his chest. "He always used to lock the door..." He whispered.
Noa mentally smacked himself. ~Duh! You were just talking about otosan, too! Baka! What were you thinking?!~ He sighed and placed a hand on Seto's shaking shoulders as the teen sobbed into his arms, which were hugging his knees to his chest. "I'm sorry... I...I forgot..."
"That's okay..." Seto mumbled before unfolding himself and walking to his dresser. He grabbed something out of the top drawer and disappeared into the bathroom.
~He's still a child in so many ways...~ Noa thought to himself. ~I am the same, and so is Moku-kun. We weren't ready to grow up when we did. Moku-kun, he's still pretty innocent. I guess I am too, compared to Seto...~ He sighed. ~We have so many things that tear us apart. I'm not so sure I can ever forgive him for first stealing otosan's heart, and then killing him. I know he dislikes me because he knows I've been watching him, through everything, yet never revealed myself. I know his every weakness, yet he knows none of mine, other that otosan. I just wanted him to be my friend, too...~ He sighed and looked down to the floor, closing his eyes against a fresh onslaught of shady tears.
"Noa?" Seto came out from the bathroom, the toilet running behind him. He was wearing nothing more than a pair of blue boxers that matched his eyes and the scarab he'd forgotten that was around his neck. The scars on his chest and legs stood out against his light skin. His face was cleaned, although his eyes were still slightly red. He sat next to the spirit on his bed. "What's wrong?"
Noa turned and sobbed into Seto's chest. "I just wanna be friends..." He whispered.
Seto, startled, let his arms tighten around the boy. "Hush... We are friends, but friends fight some times." He assured Noa.
"I'm...just so...tired of... of being...alone..." Noa said softly through his sobs.
"Oh, jeeze..." Seto sighed and started rocking a little, Noa still leaning against him. He started humming a calming song his own mother used to use, before she died.
In a few moments, Noa pulled away. "Sorry about that..." He mumbled.
"S'ok." Seto shrugged. "It's what friends are for."
"Friends?" Noa asked softly.
"Yeah, friends. Like you and me, and ototo-chan, of course." Seto grinned.
Noa made a face. "Nah. We're all more like brothers."
Seto chuckled softly. "Noa, we are brothers."
Noa shrugged. "So?" He stood. "Go to bed, Seto."
Seto sighed and crawled under his covers. "Yes, sir." He said mockingly, then smiled softly.
Noa rolled his eyes. "I'll go make sure Moku-kun's asleep, okay?" Seto nodded and Noa watched from the now-open door as he snuggled up against the pillows. He grinned, his hand on the light switch. "G'night, Seto-tenshi." He whispered.
Seto shot up in the bed as the light went off, plunging the room into darkness. Noa giggled as he hurried down the hallway towards Mokuba's room. Seto let out and annoyed sighed, then laid back down. "I hate that name, you ass..." He grumbled to no one, his hands closing over the scarab. He, slowly, fell asleep.
