Chapter Five: Accidentally In Love

Yami sat at the edge of the dock, his feet dangling lazily over the rim and skimming along the surface of the water. The water was fairly chilly, but he didn't mind it. In truth, it made him feel very warm inside. Because now, when he thought of the water, he didn't think of his deceased father. He thought of Teana and the swimming lessons he had given to her that one day.

`Teana...I wish I knew where you disappeared to. I haven't seen you since that day we spent together. Are you avoiding me? I hope not because I miss you and I want you to come visit me again. It's been almost three weeks. I'm lonely without you. You brighten my day and make me feel as though nothing can go wrong when I'm with you.'

The tri haired teen sighed loudly. "Look at me. I sound like a lovesick idiot." He lay down on the dock, his feet still hanging in the water. Squinting to block out the bright sun, he stared up at the clouds floating overhead. "I don't know when it happened...we've known each other for such a short time. But I feel such a strong connection towards her. A connection that I've never felt with anyone else before. And I love to be with her."

`Teana...I think I'm falling in love with you. Now if only I can see you again to tell you that.'

He stopped in his thoughts and put a hand to his chin. `I wonder what she would say if I told her I loved her. Would she be utterly disgusted? Would she sympathize and only want to stay friends? Would she say she loved me back?' The boy rolled onto his side. `Love is way too difficult to understand. Jounouchi has it easy. He has Mai and they love each other fully. But they had always loved each other, even when they were children. My dilemma is completely different.'

Yami groaned and smacked himself in the forehead. "Why is this so difficult?!"

"What's difficult?"

The crimson eyed peasant turned to see his white haired friend, Bakura, standing behind him on the dock. He was smirking as he walked forward, eyebrows raised in interest. For some reason Yami did not know why, Bakura always found pleasure in hearing about or seeing other's pain. "It's nothing," he replied to the question, sitting up.

Bakura snorted. "My ass it's nothing. You're never upset like this without a reason." He squatted down to the other's level and nudged him in the ribs. "Well, what is it? I know something is bothering you."

Yami pouted and pushed the taller away slightly. "I...I don't want to talk about it, Bakura. It's sort of...well...private."

"Well then it's not about your parents. You'd tell me if it was about them." The white haired thief pondered for a moment, idly studying his friend. "It's about a person." He looked into the other's deep scarlet orbs intently. "A woman," he continued, very delighted at the uncomfortable expression on Yami's face. He faked a gasp as he saw the answer clearly. "Dear Ra! Is my young friend in love?!"

Yami scowled at the water below him. He should have known Bakura would figure it out. The other had always been extraordinarily good at reading people's emotions and thoughts. He could see a person's soul just by looking into their eyes. Another reason why the boy was feared by most commoners. With the exception of his friends, that is.

"So you're in love? That's nothing to be ashamed of." The white haired boy grinned, looking up at the sky. "I was in love once."

The shorter's eyes widened. "What?!" He laughed. "You, Bakura Hideyoshi, actually loved someone?!" The idea was quite comical. Bakura wasn't exactly an emotional type of guy. It surprised even those who knew him well that he felt any type of human sentiment.

"It didn't last at all. She didn't love me back," the older snapped. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Then I don't want to talk about Teana."

Bakura's brown eyes lit up. He smirked at his friend. "Teana, hmm?"

Yami blushed and stood up. "Forget I said that. Look, I don't want to talk about it, okay? Please, just drop the subject."

The taller held his hands up as a surrender. "Alright, alright. You win. I won't speak of it ever again." He smiled. "So is she why you were out here moping?" he laughed.

"Bakura!"

"Mother, you said my punishment was up last Friday! I did what I was told and stayed put in the Palace. So why can't I go with Seto into the main city?"

Queen Layla sighed loudly, massaging her temples. "Anzu, you know it's not my choice. I have to obey Pharaoh's wishes and he wants you to stay in the Palace for a few more days."

"This is so unfair," Anzu huffed. "I was really looking forward to this, mother. I don't see what the big deal is, either. Seto will be there. And another thing, why does Seto get to go into the city alone whenever he wants but I can't?"

"Because," the queen began, eyes narrowing. "Seto is older than you, a male, and trained to defend himself."

"But he could protect me too!"

Layla shook her head. "I'm through having this discussion with you, daughter. Now please, I have to attend a meeting with your father. Try to behave and stay inside these walls."

Anzu frowned and nodded in defeat. "Alright." She then turned and left the Royal Gardens where her mother was. Walking alone down the hallways, she smiled when she spotted a familiar servant. "Kisara!" she whispered, waving the girl over.

Kisara's eyes widened at being addressed. Bowing to the princess, she asked if there was a problem. "No, no problem. I was just wondering if you knew the whereabouts of Seto."

"I am not sure, Miss," Kisara answered truthfully. "I just came from his chambers and he was nowhere near there. I would check the throne room. If he isn't there either, then I suppose he went out into the city with Priest Shada and Priestess Isis already."

The brunette almost laughed out loud when she noticed the jealousy shining in the blue haired girl's eyes at the mention of the Priestess. It was quite known around the palace that the black haired woman held feelings for the high-priest-in-training. And Kisara hated knowing that because she figured Seto most likely held feelings for her too. Isis was, after all, a very attractive woman. Many of the other Priests on the High Council, including Seto's father, Akunadin, were infatuated with her.

Thanking the servant, the princess made her way towards the throne room. Hopefully her cousin hadn't left for the city yet. She was hoping he would be able to convince the Pharaoh to let her go out with him. She hoped Pharaoh would give in. She needed to go into the city that day. She needed to see Yami again. Maybe then she'd be able to tell him the truth about who she was.

`I'm tired of hiding it. And, if I really am in love with him, than he deserves to know. I...I hope he won't think of me differently when he knows the truth. That's another reason why I don't want to tell him yet. Yami treats me like a normal person. Like a normal teenage girl. And really, that's all I am. The only difference is that I wear a gold tiara on my head. It doesn't make me more special than any commoner girls. I hope that, after I tell him, he'll see me in the same light as he did before.'

"Shimon, are the horses prepared to leave?"

"Oh-oh yes, Master Seto."

Anzu grinned at hearing her cousin's name. Good. She wasn't too late.

"Priest Shada, Priestess Isis, and I are eager to go out into the city. It has been a while since are last visit."

Shimon nodded and bowed respectfully at the high-priest-in-training. He then scuttled out of the room. Seto leaned against the wall, his eyes darting in the direction of the Princess standing down the hallway. "Where you spying on me?"

The brunette snorted. "Don't flatter yourself. I was just coming to ask if I could come to the city with you and the other two priests..."

"Didn't your mother say no to you going out into the city already?"

Anzu growled. "Now who's been spying?" she questioned sarcastically.

Seto smirked and crossed his arms over his chest. "I don't know if it would be a good idea or not." He grinned as his cousin's face turned pink with anger.

The Princess huffed loudly. "You're just doing this to annoy me!" She fell to the floor and wrapped her arms around the other's legs. "Please, please, please!" she begged, showing him the best puppy-dog eyes she could muster.

The blue eyed teen almost burst into laughter. "Alright. I'll ask your father if you can come with me. But only if you'll stop dishonoring yourself and get off the floor."

"Right away!" Anzu detached herself from the older's legs and threw her arms around his shoulders. "Thank you!"

It was Seto's turned to snort as he detangled himself from her embrace. "Just don't say I never helped you out any." He smiled and walked towards the Throne Room. "Shimon, prepare another horse for Princess Anzu."

The stout advisor nodded. "Right-right away, Master Seto."

Yami sighed as he looked into the waters of the Nile. He had been sitting out on that dock all afternoon, hoping to receive a surprise visit from Teana. But alas, no such thing came.

Throwing a rock into the blue waters, he watched it skip along the surface before sinking under. Thoughts of the brown haired girl plagued his mind. He still could not figure out what all the strange emotions in his heart were. He didn't know exactly what he felt towards her. He thought he was in love with her, but he had also felt that way towards other pretty girls he had met before. Maybe it was just lust? An obsession? She was awfully pretty. He hoped it wasn't any of those.

He shook his head roughly from side to side. He'd never get to tell her if she never came to see him! He'd never get to sort his feelings out if he never saw her again. "Where is she? Does she even want to see me again?"

"What kind of question is that? Of course I want to see you again," a female voice answered his inquiry.

Yami's eyes widened. He turned around to see Teana standing on the shore of the Nile. She wore a smile on her face and the evening sun reflected cheerfully in her bright blue eyes. Standing up from the dock, he ran over to her. A large grin was plastered on his face as he met up with her on the shoreline. "I was thinking you wouldn't come back."

Teana chuckled. "I know. I heard your musings." She bowed her head. "I'm really sorry about not coming sooner. Believe me; I wanted to come see you so badly. But I wasn't allowed. You see, my father punished me for arriving home late that one night. That's why I couldn't come."

"That's alright, I understand completely."

"Thank you," the brunette whispered. Looking to the floor, she scratched her arm nervously. "Actually, Yami...there's another reason why I couldn't come. You see...I've been lying-"

"-Hold that thought," The tri haired teen whispered. "I have a surprise for you."

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><>< ;><><><><><><><><><&g t;

Teana blinked a few times at being interrupted during her confession. She was about to tell him who she really was. That took a lot of courage on her part. And...and he ruined it. She didn't know if she'd be able to tell him again now.

Yami took her hand and led her down a pathway towards a long canoe-like boat sitting in the sand. He had borrowed it from Jounouchi, whose father was also a fisherman, in hopes that she would come and visit him.

"Yami...what are you doing?" Anzu questioned, raising an eyebrow at the boat. It didn't look too sturdy.

"I'm taking you out on the lake to watch the sunset." The peasant paused. "You can stay out until sunset, can't you?" he asked hopefully.

The Princess nodded happily; glad she didn't have to put a frown on his face again like last time when she left so abruptly.

`"Make sure to be back when you hear my whistle at eight-thirty. I won't wait longer than ten minutes. If you're not there in time, I'll leave without you and tell Pharaoh you went to see some peasant boy."'

Anzu smiled, thankful that Seto was at least giving her this chance to see Yami. She had told only him about the object of her affections and, surprisingly, he was quite happy for her. Quite happy that she had found someone to give her heart to at last. He had also promised that Ra could send his soul straight to the Underworld if he so much as breathed a word of it to anyone. Not that he needed to make such a promise. She trusted her cousin's word more than anyone's.

Yami smiled widely. "Great! I was hoping you could if you came," he explained, stopping in front of the water. He then did something unexpected. Removing his hand from Anzu's, he brought his hands under her and hoisted her into the air.

The brunette let out a shrill cry as she was lifted into the air, wrapping her arms tightly around the crimson eyed boy's neck. She blushed at what just happened and how she was holding him. Then she burst out laughing, holding him even tighter. "Wh-what was th-that for?" she asked through her giggles after she was placed into the boat.

He shrugged in response. "I didn't want you to get your feet dirty." He got into the boat across from her and picked up a paddle for the boat.

"Oh, you're quite the gentleman, Yami," The Princess giggled.

"Always."

They both blushed. Yami placed the paddle into the water and pushed out off the shore and into the deeper waters of the river. They didn't look at each other. Both were too preoccupied with their own thoughts.

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><>< ;><><><><><><><><><&g t;

The boat ride was quiet, for the most part. Every once and a while, one of the two would bring up a topic in an attempt to make small talk. But whenever their eyes would lock, they'd both turn red and turn away; ending all conversation.

Yami sighed as he pulled the boat up to his dock. He had to confess to himself that the boat ride didn't go as smooth as he expected. `I shouldn't have lifted her into the boat. That seemed to have made her really uncomfortable.' He glared at the water. `I'm such an idiot!'

Getting out of the dock, he offered Teana a hand. She took it, seeming to be in her own world still. Not looking where she was going, she tripped on a loose board and fell forward.

Eyes widening, Yami held the paddle out to catch her fall. She landed pressed against the paddle and his chest. The crimson eyed teen sucked in his breath quickly, feeling warmth spread throughout his entire body. He closed his eyes at the feeling of her cool breath ghosting across his neck.

He couldn't take it anymore! There were too many emotions inside of him. Too many wild thoughts running through his head. It was all too overwhelming and he needed to act upon what he felt in his heart.

Dropping the paddle to the ground, Yami wrapped his arms around Teana's waist and pressed his lips lightly against hers.

To Be Continued...

A/N: ^____^ yeah! Yami kissed her! Hehe. I must confess, that kissing scene was stolen from a different anime! If anyone can guess which anime it was taken from (and between which to characters), they'll get the next chapter dedicated to them!!

Just say: It came from the ______ anime and the kiss was between _____ and ____!!
