Legacy of Seraph

Chapter One

Joey went through his deck for the umpteenth time in an hour. He was currently doing delivery for Giovanni's Pizzeria, and it was a slow day. He had a total of one delivery in three hours, so he kept going through his deck to keep him occupied. Finally, he heard a voice that was like music to his ears.

"Hey, Joey!" It was Sal, the restaurant manager.

"Yeah, Sal?" Joey asked.

"You can punch out now," Sal said. "You're done for today."

"OK, sure thing," Joey responded. Then, his cell phone rang. "Yeah?"

"Hey, Joey!" It was Serenity. "Are you done with work yet?"

"Yeah, I just got done," Joey answered.

"Listen, on your way home, could you pick me up from Sophia's house?" Serenity asked. Sophia was a new girl the same age as Serenity.

"Yeah, I guess," Joey responded. "Just gimme about fifteen minutes, OK? I'm gonna eat before I leave."

"All right. See you later."

"See ya, sis."

Joey pulled off to the side of the road and grabbed a map. "Crap! Where's Sophia's house again?" He had gotten himself lost, and to make matters worse, the sun was beginning to set. He got out of his car to try and find a street sign. While walking on the sidewalk, he tripped. As he got up, he saw the reason: his left shoe had come untied. He bent down to tie it, but as he was tying it, someone walked right into him.

Joey jumped up. "Hey! What's da big idea?" he shouted at the retreating form. He then ran up to the person. "Hello? Are you deaf? I wanna know what your problem is!"

The man who walked into Joey turned around. Laying his eyes on Joey's duel disk, the man asked, "You are a duelist?"

Joey hesitated, surprised by the sound of the man's voice. It sounded almost mechanical. "Yeah, I duel."

"Then we shall duel here," the man responded as he pulled out his own duel disk.

"Fine!" Joey shouted. "I'll beat the stuffin' out of ya for knockin' me ova!"

Each duelist drew five cards. The man looked at Joey. "I will permit you to go first."

"All right," Joey responded, "then I summon the Flame Manipulator!" He placed the Flame Manipulator face-up on the field in attack mode.

"I place two cards face-down and end my turn," the stranger said.

Joey drew his next card. "All right then! Flame Manipulator, attack his face-down monsta!" The Flame Manipulator attacked, but was then stopped. The monster that Joey's opponent had played was a Giant Soldier of Stone. As a result, Joey lost 1100 Life Points, bringing his total down to 6900. At the same time, Joey felt electricity surge through his body, causing him to scream out in pain.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you that this is a Shadow Game," the man said. "Every time you lose Life Points, an electric current is run through your body. When you run out of Life Points, you will lose consciousness."

Joey clenched his teeth from the pain. "Who da hell are you?" he demanded.

"My secrets shall not be unlocked so easily," the man said. "If you somehow manage to defeat me, I shall tell you, but my calculations show that I will prevail."

"What can I get ya, kid?" the bartender asked.

"Could I get a Coke?" Yuan asked. The bartender stooped down and grabbed a can and a glass full of ice and handed them to the young man. Yuan gave the bartender his money, poured the cola into the glass, and took a drink. As he drank, he noticed that several people were looking at him with an odd expression. Yuan knew why: he was not your everyday traveler. He had long azure hair that was tied back right behind his neck and the bangs on the right side of the face hung down without restraint. He wore a white cape that was fastened by his family's crest. His outfit itself was green, with white gloves and boots and a black belt with a sword hooked to his right hip.

Suddenly, Yuan's eyes grew wide. He quickly downed the rest of his soda and then ran out the door. Anyone watching would have thought that Yuan forgot something and went back to get it; however, that was not the case. Yuan could tell when someone was in trouble, and he ran to aid whoever was in danger.

-1-

Joey had been reduced to 1000 Life Points, and had not succeeded in even touching the Life Points of his opponent. The mysterious man had a Black Skull Dragon on the field, and Joey had no Monster Cards in either his field or in his hand. He also had no Spell or Trap Cards that would keep him from losing. Also, due to the nature of this shadow game, he was in excruciating pain.

"If you are unable to make a move, then end your turn and let me end you!" the man shouted.

Through gritted teeth, Joey mumbled, "Fine. I end my turn."

The man drew another card, although at this point it was unnecessary. Then, he heard the words that would finish the duel: "Black Skull Dragon, attack my opponent's Life Points!" The hologram of Black Skull Dragon attacked, and Joey braced himself. The attack reduced Joey's Life Points to zero, and a final jolt of electricity surged through him. This time, it sapped all of Joey's strength and he fell to the ground, unconscious.

The mysterious man started to laugh. "Pathetic humans," he remarked. "They cannot even master what they create! We move in and cut them down in their own game!" He then lifted a finger and it started to glow. "Farewell, human." A beam of light shot from his hand. Suddenly, the attack bounced right back.

Yuan stood in front of the unconscious Joey, breathing heavily and holding his sword. "You want the kid, you have to go through me, Westram."

The man was shocked by Yuan's words. "What? You can't possibly . . ."

"I do," Yuan responded. "You may remember me. No? Well, surely my sword rings a bell."

The man looked at the sword Yuan was holding. "That sword . . . is it . . . it can't be . . ."

"Now you realize who I am," Yuan said. "Today, I'm feeling merciful. I'll let you go, but only if you run right now and don't come back. Do I make myself clear?" The man took a step back and ran away.

"Good riddance," Yuan said. He then looked over at the unconscious Joey. "Looks like I should attend to the matter at hand."

-1-

Sunlight filtered in through the window of the guest bedroom where Joey lay. Slowly, he opened his eyes. Surprised to find himself anywhere other than his own bedroom, he shot up, forgetting about his ordeal the previous evening. Then he heard a voice squeal, "Joey!"

Serenity ran in the room and threw her arms around her brother's neck. "You're awake! Thank goodness you're all right!"

"Pardon my French, but where da hell are we?" Joey asked.

"Good. You're awake." Yuan entered from the next room. "I found you unconscious and a man standing over you. It appeared that he meant to do you harm. I chased him off and brought you back to my place. I then looked at your cell phone and saw your sister called you several times, so I called her and told her what happened. I also went down to pick her up. I also had your car towed here."

"Wait. Time out," Joey interrupted. "How did you know I had a car?"

"Simple," Yuan answered. "Your license and registration fell out of your pocket when you passed out. I simply matched the license plate number on the registration to the license plate number on your car. That, and your car was the only one around for a few blocks."

"Joey, isn't there something you should be saying?" Serenity demanded.

"OK, OK! Geez, you're startin' ta sound like Mom more and more!" Joey turned to face Yuan. "Uh . . . thanks, um . . ."

"Yuan," Yuan said. "Yuan McCann." He extended his hand. "And you are Joseph Wheeler."

"Wait. How didja know my name?"

"I told you before," Yuan said. "Your license fell out of your pocket."

Joey put a hand behind his head. "Oh, yeah. Right.

"Oh, yeah. I got a question for ya."

"Shoot," Yuan responded.

"Do you know who da guy was dat attacked me? He seemed really . . . weird. He even got me involved in a Shadow Game."

"Hmmm . . ." Yuan was deep in thought.

-1-

"Father?" Yuan shouted. "Father? Where are you?"

"Are you looking for this man?" someone asked. In his arms was a man with hair the same color as Yuan's hair, only shorter.

"Father!!" Yuan shouted. The man did not stir. "Father?!"

"Your father is dead," the person said, "just like everyone else from your town, and just like you will be!"

-1-

"Hey! Earth to Yuan!" Joey half-shouted.

"Oh, sorry, he doesn't ring a bell," Yuan responded, snapping out of his reverie. "Anyway, you two should probably get home soon."

"Yeah, OK," Joey said. "Where exactly are we, anyway?"

"You're in Domino's upper-class district," Yuan responded.

"WHAT??" Joey shouted.

"My father and my uncle own a business," Yuan said. "Father passed away recently, and he left me his share of the proceeds and all of his property. I am technically my uncle's business partner, but he cuts me a lot of slack."

"Pardon me, but how old are you?" Serenity asked.

My nineteenth birthday was three months ago," Yuan answered. "I just finished my freshman year in college."

"Oh, cool," Joey responded. He then saw, to his surprise, a duel disk sitting on Yuan's dresser. "You're a duelist, Yuan?"

"What?" Yuan switched his gaze to where Joey was looking. "Yeah, I guess. I haven't dueled in a while, though, so I'm a little rusty."

"Well, whaddaya say I give ya a refresha course?"

Yuan got up and grabbed his duel disk and his deck. "All right. But you'd better not hold back, because I certainly won't."

-1-

"So much for holdin' back," Joey remarked after he got a major beating, knocking away only 500 of Yuan's Life Points.

"Don't take it too hard, Joey," Yuan said. "Like any card game, you need to be lucky. Also, you just used so many dragons that my Dark Paladin's Attack Points went through the roof. Better luck next time."

"Just one question," Joey said. "Is your deck designed to take on dragons?"

"Yeah," Yuan said. "The guys back home use almost all dragons, and their decks revolve around monsters like Red Eyes Black Dragon. In response, I built an anti-dragon deck that revolved around Dark Paladin. I would use cards like Witch's Apprentice, Sword of Dark Destruction and Book of Secret Arts to boost the Attack points, Emblem of Dragon Destroyer to put Buster Blader in my hand, and of course, Dark Paladin's Attack Points increase by 500 for every dragon on the field and in either player's Graveyard. That's why I also had several dragons in my deck."

Joey got an evil grin on his face. "You know, with a deck like dat, you could beat da crap outta Kaiba!"

"Kaiba?" Yuan asked. "You mean Seto Kaiba, CEO of KaibaCorp? Are you nuts? My goal here is to get Kaiba to accept my product, not get him angry!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Joey interrupted. "Slow down! You mean you're in Domino to do business with Kaiba? You gotta be kiddin'!"

"No, I'm serious," Yuan responded. He then glanced at his watch. "You guys should get going. You've been too long here already. Do you know how to get home from here?"

"Yeah," Joey said. "I know how ta get to da exit of da upper-class district, and from dere, it's a cakewalk. Oh, yeah, before I forget, I'll be meetin' some friends down at da game shop later, around 1:00. Here's da address. See if you can meet us down dere."

"All right, we'll see," Yuan then said. He led Joey and Serenity to the front door. "Well, I'm gonna let you two go. Oh, and Joey?"

"Yeah?" Joey asked.

"Nice car. It's not every day I get to see a blue 1970 Chevelle."

-1-

"You know, Joey, you can be rather rude sometimes, you know that?" Serenity said.

"Whaddaya talkin' about?" Joey asked.

"I mean, giving Yuan a hard time about doing business with Kaiba!"

"I just let my curiosity get da betta of me, OK? And what's with you defendin' him? You like him or somethin'?"

Serenity's face turned beet-red. "Of-of course not!" she exclaimed.

"Well, ya coulda fooled me." Then, a thought crossed Joey's mind. McCann . . . Now where have I heard that name before?
