Joey stared at the phone in front of him, then at the scrap of paper next to him. A phone number was written on it. Joey picked up the phone, and started to dial the number, then he stopped,
`What am I doing?' he thought to himself, `she'll NEVER go out with me. She's WAY out of my league.'
He put the phone down with a sigh.
`I should do it anyway, if she turns me down, I'll say it was a dare. She might not believe that, but she can't prove it. I've got nothing to lose,' thinking about the girl in question Joey added, `and everything to gain.'
He picked up the phone once more. He was determined not to chicken out. I mean how hard was it to ask a girl out?
`If you're Joey Wheeler,' he thought to himself dryly, `very.' He started to dial her number…

Mai was bored, bored with a capital `B'. None of her friends were home. They were all off with their boyfriends, and she was home all alone. She had no boyfriend at the moment. Her latest, she had dumped only the day before…he wasn't her type. She sighed deeply, it was getting harder to find a good boyfriend these days, they were all obsessed with one thing…Sex. To tell the truth, Mia was getting tired of having a new boyfriend every week. It was pathetic really-none of her friends could remember her newest boyfriend's name. They were lucky, all her closest friends had been going steady with their boyfriends for months, some for years. Mai had never been in a relationship that had lasted more than two weeks. Sighing, Mai flopped back down on her couch, turning her attention back to the video she had rented. It was a cheesy movie, a stupid romance film, with the same old clichéd plot. It was supposed to be one of those movies were you sobbed at the end, but Mia was far from weeping. She watched impassively as the hero was struck down by the heroine's jealous ex-husband. Stifling a yawn, Mai let her mind wander far from the movie's meager plot.
Her thoughts were shattered by the phone ringing. She picked up the phone on the second ring, how pathetic, she usually waited until the fourth or fifth, so whoever was calling knew she had other more important things to do. She really had become desperate for any type social interaction.

"Hello?" Mai said.
"Mai? Is that you?"
"Yes. Now who is this?"
"Umm… Joey."
"Joseph Wheeler is that you?" Mai demanded.
"Yes."
"Well…what is it?"
"Ummm…I was just wondering…if…you'dliketogotodinnerandamoviewithme?"
"What? Slow down."
"I was just wondering if you would like to maybe, go eat and then see a movie," as an afterthought, he added, "with me?"
"…" Mai should have expected him to ask sooner or late, but still…with JOEY? Well…why not? It's not like she had any previous plans, and a date with Wheeler might just very well be what she needed to get herself out of the rut she was in at the moment.
"It's OK, I'll hang up now." He said.
"Aren't you even going to wait for my reply?" Mai asked.
"Your wha? Oh…."
Mai almost laughed, then she reconsidered it, laughing would probably scar the boy for life. But really, the kid was hopeless. "Yes, I'll go."
"You will?? I mean when should I pick you up? 9 good?"
"It's fine."
"OK, I'll see you then."

Joey hung up. He pumped the air with a fist, and said "YES!!!!!!!" He looked down at his clothes, and scurried to get ready for his date with Mai.

Mai hung up the phone, staring at it thoughtfully. `I wonder what has gotten in to me. I don't know why I accepted, I guess it's `cause he's so damn pathetic.'
