Chapter 5

The Ring glittered. He stroked the sharp points with a content smile, waiting as he poured clear water into a bowl and watched images dance across the surface.
How cute. The little light was trying to resist, but his body was betraying him.
Soon his mind would betray him as well.
Still, he could not suppress a slight feeling of envy. He shoved it aside and concentrated on his work.
There had been reports of a resistance. Of course, such things sprang up often, but they had never managed to penetrate Yami's capital city. Foolish humans.
Still, just in case…
It would be fun to take it apart!

Mahaado watched as the water cleared, now showing only his reflection. His eyes shifted color to a dull brown, his hair drifted short, climbed up his cheekbones until it was a tawny blonde. Clothing shifted into a pair of jeans and a worn gray sweatshirt, feet encased in old sneakers.
He smirked. The Ring's laughter echoed in his mind.
It would be fun.
Humans tended to believe that all humans were on their side. It was true, up to a point, but in a sense, the Sennen Item Holders had transcended mere humanity long ago. The gods spoke and whispered through them - some were even gods in disguise.
Who knew what the precious Pharaoh was?
Mahaado knew, but he didn't tell. After all, he thought, as he walked through the ruined streets of a small village, cautiously, looking wary, as if he expected a monster to jump out at any minute - he had a role to play too…
“Psst!”
A voice. Oh, that girl he did recognize. Anzu, wasn't it? She had a horrible crush on his Pharaoh. Interesting…
He followed her beckoning hands into a small room underground, lit with a few stubby candles. A few others were gathered there, but none he recognized form the group that used to follow his Pharaoh around.
Interesting.

He adjusted his worn knapsack, and procured several cans of tinned sardines. They were welcomed greedily, and hunger satiated, the group began to talk, asking about his history. He replied with a frown that he was from Egypt, his family was dead, and that he'd caught a ride on one of the last few freighters still in existence, hidden in a barrel of olives. They nodded.
One did what one had to do to survive nowadays…
He gave his name as Kuro, inwardly smirking at the irony, and they settled in.

The next day, the Skull Servants attacked.
He did not give any sign of his presence, of course. He attacked them with a blunt piece of wood - it worked miserably, as was to be expected, and only a few were sent to the graveyard - and he himself was taken out quite early in the fighting.
However, it bought him their loyalty. Anzu began telling him of their plans, but he had to keep from laughing. Really, it was laughable! If they could not even destroy the weak monsters, what was the chance of harming the stronger ones?
Pathetic fools.
Still, Yami would reward him well if he brought them back. Anzu was probably the head of the cycle. She was the only one who knew a bit of Yami's power…
He could destroy her first.
He had noticed her checking out his borrowed form. It did resemble Jounichi, in a roundabout way. Perhaps… ah, she'd had feelings for him.
Well, now things were different.

Jounichi was not dead, though many believed him to be so. However, he was not quite recognizably human either. The Red Eyes had chosen him for her mate. It was quite interesting…. And Yami didn't mind another dragon.
It was more bearable than watching Jou, after all.

He shouldn't be enjoying this, Yuugi thought dimly, but he couldn't help it. Yami really was his other half. He needed his darkness…!
He gave a strangled cry of pleasure as lights sparked behind his eyes.
Yami watched as a faint blue glow manifested in Yuugi's eyes for a split second. It had worked wonderfully…
His hikari panted, and Yami poured them both water.
There would be more time to play later.
For now, he let his hikari fall into exhausted slumber and headed to see what Mahaado was doing.

He found the mage absent, but he worried little. He closed his eyes and felt along their bond. < Mahaado? >
< Yes, my Pharaoh? >
< Why are you not in the Palace? >
< I decided to check out the rumors of Resistance, my Pharaoh. >
< Amusing. > Yami sent a wave of amusement along their bond, glittering white. < So tell me, is it of importance? >
< Only the girl. The Leader of the one I have found is… Anzu Mazaki. >
< Ahh… so it seems that my light's friends stand with him. And they defy their rightful ruler… >
< Yes, it would seem that way, my Pharaoh. >
< Are you going to kill her? >
< I leave that for my Pharaoh to decide…. >
< Mm… then do as you please… >
< Of course, my Pharaoh. >

“Kuro?”
“Yes, Anzu?” Mahaado looked up from the paper he was currently making diagrams on. It was to aid in their battle plans, or so Anzu said. She wanted everyone to brainstorm ideas for fighting the evil shadow creatures.
How ironic.
“I…I'm sorry, but do you have any relatives named Jounichi or Katsuya? You look so much like him?”
Mahaado shook his head at that. “I am sorry, but the name is unfamiliar to me. Was he a friend of yours?”
Anzu sniffled and nodded.
“I am sorry for your loss.”
That was all the warning he had before Anzu flung herself into his arms, crying as if her heart was broken. Interesting. Well, if he coaxed her enough she would succumb.
It would be worth it.
And really, if he imagined Aishizu underneath him instead of her face, he could force himself to function.
She looked so sweet asleep that it made him nauseous.
Still, what was done was done, and he locked the manacles around her waist, ankles, and wrists, before he opened the portal home.
Foolish girl.

Mahaado obviously has no problems whoring himself out for the good of the Pharaoh. Maybe I should feel sorry for Anzu?
