CRASH! The beer bottle broke against the wall, missing its target completely and spraying foul smelling liquid all over the wall and on the surrounding objects. The target, a tough-looking blonde boy, held a two-by-four over his shoulder much like a batter would hold a baseball bat in a vain attempt to fend off the flying glass rockets. “You bratty ass kid!” the one throwing the bottles bellowed in a burly voice, “What have I told you about staying out that fucking late!” Another bottle went flying, this time, landing on the floor in front of the young man, just barely missing his feet. The one responsible for hurling the brown projectiles was a gruff-looking man with the appearance either a mechanic or a construction worker. He stood approximately a yard and a half away from his target, his beer gut hanging over his belt and a half-empty case of Miller on the coffee table in front of him. “I told you, I lost track of time!” the blonde male shouted in response, “It's the truth!” Another bottle flew past his head and shattered upon hitting the wall like so many others before it. The younger male sighed with relief seeing that the case was now empty; no more bottles could be hurled at him, or so he thought. The gruff man growled much like an agitated grizzly bear would after being grazed by a hunter's bullet. He moved to the kitchen, which wasn't more that a few steps away, and hurled the contents of the china cabinet at the helpless blonde like Frisbees. The scruffy man's aim was off due to his intoxication at the time. Some dishware was dodged and shattered in the collision with the wall; others were smacked like cricket balls by the young blonde's two-by-four, and not one came in contact with the boy. He felt like a target in a shooting gallery at the time. Apartment 301 was shaking with commotion and noise which caused other residents to become suspicious. Sure, it wasn't uncommon to hear a fight or two coming from the apartment, but tonight the noise was louder than it had ever been.
The dishes were obviously obsolete to the young man. The older male snarled once again. What else could be used to bring this kid down? He turned his back on his target and rummaged through the cupboard for something else to hurl at the teen. The golden-haired teen had crept away unnoticed while the older man had his back turned and escaped to his room. Hidden deep in the piles of dirty laundry, under the candy bar wrappers, and among the vast quantity of empty soda cans was a hidden key. A key that would help him escape all of this hellish torture. The early morning light spilled through the open window and, almost as if it were a message from the gods, illuminated the boy's nightstand and the item that lay idle on it. It was what he had been searching for. He reached to grab it, but thought quickly before his hands touched the item. A pair of filthy socks lay draped across his desk chair. Although he didn't want to, he had to, so he shoved a hand into each sock. He retched; they were still damp and carried an odor that resembled that of a filthy bathroom. The young man swallowed against the gagging and held the gleaming item in his hands. It was beautifully forged with an oak handle and his initials etched in the barrel. From it's apparent weight, it was no doubt that the object was full of deadly pellets. “Where are you, you little fucker?!” the drunken man bellowed through the small apartment. This was it. The moment of truth. The teenager wrapped both of his hands around the object and clutched it to his chest. At this point, his adrenaline was rushing, heart pounding, and body shaking.
Breathe in… breathe out…
He could hear the intoxicated older man storming down the hallway towards the cubicle he believed to be safe in for the time being. He felt as though this were merely a nightmare that he just couldn't awake from. A cool breeze caressed the back of the blonde male's neck and he jumped as if a serial killer was breathing down his neck. The window was ajar, but he didn't take the time to notice this or to turn around and shut it. He kept his gaze and attention focused on the doorway that stood before him where the gruff older man now loomed with a crazed and intoxicated grin on his face. The gleaming weapon was firmly gripped in the tawny-haired male's outstretched hands. He seemed to be frozen in the moment. Externally, his body was as still as ice but, internally, his nerves were a mess. It was as if the adrenaline released in his system had set off an earthquake that radiated throughout his insides. His mind was going crazy as well. This had to be done. If it wasn't done, the hellish torture would just continue. His finger increased pressure on the trigger. The young man's ears were ringing due to the explosion that had just echoed throughout the apartment complex and the gruff older man lay completely still on the cream colored carpet with the floor around him stained dark red. The earthquake inside his body was quelled, but, upon seeing the motionless man sprawled across the hallway hit him with sudden weakness. The firearm fell out of his hands and hit the floor which, to him, was a loud thud. The young man peeled the sweaty socks from his trembling hands and threw them aside. His attention now averted to the open window which he had failed to notice earlier. It took every amount of strength he had at the moment to open the window further so that his scrawny frame would fit through. He dropped gracefully out of the first story window and ran into the morning sunrise.
