Ch.35: Memory Lane (pt1): A God's Challenge.

While Atemu tried to think back, he slowly fell asleep. (A/N: Probably took a lot of late nights working while he was Pharaoh, and I don't mean the pleasure slave stuff.) As he fell asleep, he began to dream, but not just any dream, more like a continuous flashbacks going as far back as his days as pharaoh when he and the others fought off a great evil from becoming a ruler of not only Egypt, but of all mankind.

~+Khemet, Egypt+~
“Pharaoh!” One of the priests called as he entered the young ruler's room. “Pardon my intrusion, but the palace is under attack! And it seems that physical force is not holding them back.”

“I know.” Pharaoh Atemu said as he looked out of the balcony, seeing the dark creatures, which do not resemble dual monsters, defeating his strong army of guards.

“Pharaoh!” Said the leader of the creatures, which looked like different parts of humans and animals sewed together. “I, Seth, God of Chaos, have come to challenge you for your soul and your rule! Come out and face me like a god that your people oh so claim to be!” Seth called out. He was in his human form with a muscular upper body, long black hair, and piercing golden eyes that can make anyone cower in fear.

Atemu turned and walked towards the door with the priest following.

“What are you going to do Great Pharaoh?” Asked the young priest.

“He wants a challenge, I'll give him a challenge.” He simply said, making the young priest shocked.

“B-But Great Phar-“ He started to say.

“You heard me!” Atemu said. “Now go!” He waved his hand mentioning the priest to leave and find a place to hide.

He walked towards the courtroom and headed to the doors, which leads outside towards the front gates. When he opened the doors, he saw nothing but corpses of all who tried to protect the palace from intruders.

Blood covered the once clear marbled floors as the twisted creatures eat as much as the can from the carcasses. When he saw the creatures closely, he had to suck in a bit of air, the creatures were human and animal, but they looked as if they came out of Hell. All of the body parts were rotten and most of the skin was hanging out, revealing muscle, intestines, or bone. Most of the creatures' postures were not as some considered human.

The creatures took notice of his presence and one tried to attack.

His puzzle began to glow and some how created a barrier around him.

Other creatures started to attack, but they were sliced down to size.

“It's nice to see both of you.” He said as he saw Bakura and Marik, even though they're covered in blood and have a few bruises here and there, but they were alive and well.

“They sure made a hell of a mess here.” Marik said as he poked a human arm with his foot. (A/N: I can't believe I'm writing a gory scene, oh well.)

“After all this, we'll probably be cleaning this shit up.” Bakura said as he stepped on a blood-covered eye.

“These things are also attacking the slaves.” Atemu said as he slowly walked to the front gates.

“Those damn things attack anything that moves!” Marik said as he wiped the blood off his face.

“And everyone in the kingdom?” Atemu said, concern written on his face.

“Don't' worry.” Bakura said. “We only counted fifty dead, everyone else have fled until you give out the word.”

Atemu nodded as the three of them walked out to the front gate and waited in the cold air, waiting for Seth to come.

They heard something from behind, when they turned around, they saw Kayra, half of her is covered in blood.

“What are you doing here?” Atemu said a bit shocked.

“You think I'm just going to sit back and let you guys have all the fun?” She said.

Atemu shook his head. “You're a piece of work sometimes.” He said making her laugh.

“Same goes for you.” She said. “Hell, all of us are a piece of work sometimes.”

“Can't argue with that.” Bakura said as Marik nodded in agreement.

“So, where is that son-of-a-bitch who calls himself the god of chaos.” Marik said as he rubbed his hands together.

“What did you call me mortal!” A voice came out of the shadows.

They turned and saw Seth walked towards them.

“So you must be the Pharaoh.” He said as he looked at Atemu dead in the eye.

“I am.” Atemu said.

“Shall we get started on our little challenge?” Seth said as he led the group to the deserted city.

“What is your challenge?” Atemu said wanting to get this over with.

“Impatient aren't we?” Seth said in a mocking tone. (A/N: Looks like Anubis from the movie, but acts like Pegasus. How scary is that!) “Alright, all you have to do is collect the shards of this crystal…” He held up the teardrop shaped crystal. “Which has the power to send me back to the Underworld.”

“I accept your challenge.” Atemu said with a smirk.

`Here he goes again!' The three thought as they mentally rolled their eyes.

Seth smirked as he crushed the crystal into four pieces and disappeared into thin air. Then he snapped his fingers, which caused the shadows to form around the three.

“What is the meaning of this!?” Atemu said as he watched as the others became trapped in a circlet of shadows like a flame.

“I believe I asked you for my challenge.” Seth said with a wicked smile.

Atemu glared at him, then looked over to his friends, who gave him the we'll-be-fine look. “What's the catch?” He said looking over at the human form god, not trusting him.

An hourglass appeared in mid-air. “You have a half an hour to complete this challenge.” Seth said with a grin as Atemu ran to the city to find the crystal shards.

0000000000
He went to the first house where his first guess of where the shard was hiding. The house looked like a little bakery from all the bread the family must have made. He carefully looked around the house quickly, but found nothing. “Not here.” He said as he let out a sigh.

~Meanwhile: 2 minutes later~
The three were sitting around, staring mindlessly at the shadowed flames that imprisoned them from helping Atemu.

“How are you three doing?” Seth asked in a mock cheery voice.

They completely ignored him.

“Well don't worry, I'm sure that your precious pharaoh will return, empty handed.” He laughed.

“He will complete your challenge and you will suffer the consequences.” Kayra said as calm as she can muster.

Seth laughed even harder as he find this amusing.

~Back to Atemu: 12 minutes later~
`Found you!' He thought as he picked up the small shard in a fruit basket. `One down and three to go.' He let out a deep sigh. “Now what. If it took me this long to find one, how am I going to find all of them in time.” He said as he tripped over a few baskets. “Are the god's against me or something!” He got up and dust himself off.

“Looking for something?” A female voice said, which made him turn to see a girl only a few feet away.

“Who are you?” He asked feeling both annoyed and stressed.

“Name's Alysia and I believe you're looking for this?” She said as she held up a shard.

“How in Ra's name did you find it!” He said shocked.

“This damn thing hit me in the head while I was trying to get something.” She said as she gave him the shard.

“Aren't you suppose to be hiding with the others?” He asked.

“Yeah, but I don't really give a damn what that bastard does to me, as long as I get to kiss his sorry ass first.” She said with fire of determination lighting up her eyes.

`This girl cannot be serious.' He thought as he looked around to see where he'll search next. “It's nice to meet you Alysia, but as of this moment, time is not at my side.” He said as he walked towards the shop.

“How much time do you have?” She asked.

Atemu looked at her, then at the sky, which is covered by dark energy. “To be honest, I really don't know.” He said. “All I know is that if I don't find these shards soon, not only will I and my companions suffer, but all of Egypt as well, maybe even more.”

“Well, you can't do it alone, ya know.” She said as five different snakes came out of nowhere and slithered up to her. “What is it?” The first snake came up and seemed to whisper in her ear. “Alright, thank-you. Continue searching for any more.” The snakes seemed to nod in understandment as they slithered away.

“Who are you?” He asked bewildered.

“Just a normal girl who knows how to understands snakes.” She said. “Well, are you just gonna stand there or are you going to save all mankind from chaos?”

`She's crazier then the three combined.' He thought as he smiled. “Where can I find the next shard?”

~Meanwhile: 27 minutes in total~
The hourglass showed that the sand is starting to get less of the sand; meaning times almost up.

“The Pharaoh only has three minutes left before his soul and his throne belong to me.” Seth said.

“AS IF ASSHOLE!!!” Marik said, can't take anymore of Seth's annoying voice. “You maybe a god, but that doesn't mean I can't kick your ass!” He ran towards the flame only to get burned and thrown back.

“You honestly believe that the Pharaoh will beat my challenge.” Seth said as he laughed.

“What's so funny!” Kayra said getting pissed.

“What I mean is that my challenges are unbeatable. No one was able to fully complete it and the Pharaoh is not going to change that.” He said, as he laughed more.

“SETH!!” A strong voice called out, making the god quickly stop laughing.

“Well it's about time Pharaoh.” Bakura said as Atemu walked towards them.

“Y-You found all four shards!” Seth said, a bit nervous on how the young pharaoh completed his challenge in a seconds spare!

Atemu smirked and held up the crystal. “I believe was made an agreement of the fate of the one who lost the challenge.” He said.

“Ra damnit.” Seth muttered, but another idea came to mind. “Yes, we do, but before you do anything, I would like to say a few words.” He said.

Atemu didn't say anything, knowing that there's something wrong with this picture.

Seth looked over to the trio and started to chant, causing the shadowed flame to create a dome, trapping the others in.

Atemu realized and held the crystal in the air.

“By the power of the Pharaoh, release your hidden power and destroy the one who dares to challenges me!” He called out as both the crystal and his puzzle started to glow.

The crystal created a beam of light, which hit Seth directly since he was paying attention to the three, who were screaming in pain. When Seth was hit, he fell backwards and cried as he felt his entire being disappearing like the sand in the wind. All of the shadow magic disappeared within a blink of an eye.

Atemu tried to let go of the crystal, but for some reason, the crystal, after the summoner has used it, it wants something in return. His whole body was screaming in pain when he couldn't let go of the crystal.

When the crystal finally let itself cease, the Pharaoh's legs gave way and passed out.

Alysia came out of the small alley and came up to him. She took out a piece of cloth to remove the crystal out of his hand, then she checked his pulse, which, unfortunately, was slow. `Damn, he won't make it.' She thought, as she looked over at the other three, who were in the same condition.

“I take it that the Pharaoh defeated the god.” A voice said from the shadowed part of the building.

“Yes, but at a great price.” She said as she stood up.

“What do you mean?” The voice said.

“Seto, you know that your cousin and his companions are going to die.” She said as Seto walked out of the shadow and stood in front of her.

“Can't you do anything?” He asked. “After all, you are a half-goddess.”

“That's true, but I have my orders from Ra himself.” She said. “So bring the near death back to life is forbidden on my part.”

Seto snorted angrily. “So what the hell are, we, or am I, suppose to do?” He said.

Alysia thought for a moment. “Prepare the secrete room and send a message to the people for them to return.” She said.

“And what about the kingdom?” He said.

“You're his cousin.” She put in.

0000000000
After a whole day of preparing, Seto and Alysia placed the four on stone slabs and chanted a spell, which created orbs from out of the bodies and into the items.

-Atemu's POV-
I opened my eyes, only to see an endless darkness. `Where am I?' I thought.

“If all of you can hear me, then listen up!” Alysia's voice said, with no source as to where she might be. “From this point on, you are now spirits in your own items. The only way you'll be released is when you are in the hands of a chosen person. But for couple of you whose items are puzzles. You could only be released when a chosen person completes it.” She explained.

`So, that's it.' I thought grimly.

And so, I lay there, hoping that the time would come when I would be released.

That was probably the bloodiest chapter I've ever written. R&R please.
