Chapter 7: Facing fears
Niaka ran. She ran out of the building, out of the maze of alleys and ran right towards the palace. She slipped in through the door and locked it fast. She was just calming down when Seto appeared.
"What are you doing here girl? Shouldn't you be at the temple?"
"I have to see the Pharaoh. It's urgent!"
"Prove it. If you're lying, you will be in severe disgrace and will be whipped in public. Go on then."
"It concerns his life. He's in danger!" Niaka replied firmly. Seto beckoned to her and led the way to the Pharaoh's chambers. They stopped outside.
"My lord Pharaoh! You have a messenger! Wake up!" Seto called. The door creaked open almost at once.
"Alright alright Seto, you don't need to-what are you doing here?" Yami saw Niaka.
"My lord, she says that she has some information concerning your life for you. Do you wish to consult her her?"
"Yes. Come in... girl." He beckoned her in and shut the door.
"What is it?"
"You are in grave danger, Phar-Yami."
"What do you mean? Wait! I'm sure that Seto is trying to overhear us. Come in here." Yami led the way into a room leading off the first. There was a vast bed coming off the wall with sheets that were crumpled and thrown back, as though they had been thrown off in a hurry. There was also another door leading off somewhere.
"Well?" Yami was looking at her intensely, as though trying to read her mind. She stared back at him.
"Yami, there is a plot to murder you in the next few days. I overheard someone prepare a plot against you. Someone will come into the palace disguised as a tradesman or something, offer a range of goods, then only give them to you if you go into your chambers alone with them. Then they will kill you and leave the scene by escaping through one of the windows. I only just escaped from them."
Yami was pacing round the room.
"You are sure of this?"
"Yes, my lord."
"Thank-you Niaka," he stopped and walked right up to her, "I'm sorry about what I said earlier. Can you forgive me?"-Niaka nodded-"Then what can I give in return? I know." Yami kissed her on the lips softly and brought her close. With his arms wrapped around her, Niaka felt secure at last. The whole night, she had been on edge. They broke the kiss and smiled at eachother. She laid her head on his shoulder and he stroked her long hair while crooning an old lullaby that his mother used to sing to him at infancy. The lullaby finished and Niaka slowly pulled away. Yami could see that she was sad for some reason.
"What's wrong? Is it me?" he worried.
"No. No, it's not you. It's just that- you wouldn't understand."
"Try me."
"I'm being pulled in more ways than one, Yami. You are the main tugger, but there is at least one other."
"What do you mean?"
"You are not the only one who desires me, Yami," she gave a tired smile, "I know of at least one other who wants me."
Yami drew back.
"Who?" His tone was dangerously cold. Niaka noticed the danger signs.
"The other has wanted me for longer than you have," she looked him in the eye, "Bakura."
"Bakura... do you return his affections?"
"Of course not! I only love one man!"
Yami looked at her in horror as Niaka chuckled.
"Don't worry, Yami. It's you I love! No-one else can tempt me. You alone have a tiny bit of power over me."
"Only a tiny bit?" Yami chuckled quietly. Niaka smiled before kissing him lightly on the cheek. He started to walk forwards, driving her before him. They were getting nearer and nearer the wall until Niaka was right against it. He smirked before kissing her on the lips and moving down along her jaw, he caressed her gently before bringing her away from the wall and breaking the kisses to gaze at her flushed face. They smiled at one another and kissed on the lips. He let go of her and led her to the bed. He raised an eyebrow suggestively, but Niaka shook her head.
"No, Yami, I'm not falling for that. I haven't changed my opinion either." Yami shrank down considerably, "But maybe... possibly... if you wanted to mar-"
"Marriage? I'm only allowed to get a wife on a special day, or claim a night with a girl on a certain occasion. Unless you want me to..."
"I'm not saying anything. To be honest, I expected you to know about those customs by now, seeing as you're the Pharaoh and all that."
"Really? I thought that you thought I wasn't that bright. Or was I wrong?" he tickled her and chuckled at her quiet laughter.
"Whatever," Niaka smiled, "Anyway, I should be going. I have work to do tomorrow. Goodnight Pharaoh."
Yami nodded in acknowledgement as she walked out of the room, but sighed when she was out of earshot. He desired her so much, that it hurt. He would just have to savour the moments that brought them together.
