Chapter 2- Remembering
The next morning, after that nighttime meeting, Yugi was now back at his dorm room, Sitting up in his bed, his right hand on the alarm clock. Yawning and jumping out of bed, he slowly trudged his way to the bathroom to freshen up for the new day. Upon going there, he passed yet another being, who had his face under the pillow. Yugi sighed and pulled that said pillow away to reveal white hair.
“Common Ryou and get up!” he yelled, throwing the fluffy thing back on the being. Ryou sat up and glared at him. He had long white locks, which were at this moment in a mess; tangled all around his face and head. His eyes were a deep chocolate brown, with innocence hitting off of them. Right now they were narrowed in a glare at his roommate.
“Fine fine Yugi,” he threw the covers back and hopped out of bed. “I'm up…” he rubbed his eyes tiredly. Yugi nodded slightly in comprehension, then walked the rest of the way to the bathroom. Upon entering, Yugi threw off his shirt and discarded his pants and boxers to the floor. He turned on the shower and stepped into the watery warmth. The violet eyed teen sighed in relief as the water fell onto his skin, flowing down his body. Closing his eyes in contentment, Yugi absently reached for the vanilla shampoo of his. With his eyes still closed, he recited the daily routine he had; squirting the soon to be foamy liquid out of the bottle onto his hand and dumped the contents onto his head. Rubbing the substance into his hair, the deep smell of vanilla met his nose.
“Mmm…” the small sound escaped his lips as he rinsed out the shampoo, the aroma becoming stronger and filling his senses with an even more exotic sent. Yugi smiled.
`The wonders of a shower…' he muttered happily in his mind. `Sometimes you just don't want to take one, but when you do you remember the smoothing ness of it.' He couldn't help but surpass a laugh at that comment from himself. Sighing again, Yugi let his mind wander under the warmth of the water and smell of the elegant vanilla. Slowly…ever so slowly, a picture appeared in his mind. Yugi scrunched his face up, in annoyance, as he could not fully make out what his mind was showing him. He sighed again, for seems the hundredth time in this shower. Concentrating on the image, Yugi tried to make it out. It was a vague memory, one he seemed to have forgotten. Yugi's eyes suddenly flew open, his mouth ajar in shock.
*Flashback*
A young boy was walking down the path of his families' estate. It was a large area, over five acres all around. Yugi was practically skipping down the path, large imported cherry trees, planted along the path, with their pink petals falling around his small form. Only at the age of ten, Yugi was not very old, but not all that young as well. Soon, as entering the spring forest, the sound of trickling water met his ears. Almost in a fit of giggles, he picked up speed and ran down to the river. He exited the woods to a beautiful open field. Seeing the river, Yugi ran forward toward it. He came to the edge, taking off his shoes and socks, and waded into the water. Splashing the water lightly with his palm, he saw sprays of it shot up into the air, glistening in the morning sun. Yugi laughed in delight at this, then wading back over to the edge, sat down on it; allowing his feet to splash around in the small river. He closed his eyes in happiness, letting the spring breeze flow through his hair and whisk around him. Yugi smiled more, his feet brushing over sand and rocks that rested at the bottom on the river. The boy was at a loss in his thoughts, and did not even notice the large animal coming toward him. A loud screeching sound met his ears, the calmness being shattered. Yugi's violet eyes snapped open, and he immediately stood. Whipping his head around to find the source of the sound, his gaze suddenly fell on the twisting and turning object in the sky. Yugi couldn't help but gasp in fear and awe. It seemed to be…a dragon. But dragons were just myths right? They couldn't be real. But, as the beast twirled and twisted through the daytime sky, he shot toward the ground. Yugi screamed and fell to the ground as the beast flew over him, and shooting up again, the body of it twisting. Opening his eyes, Yugi looked up to try and get a better look at it. The dragon seemed to be like a traditional Japanese dragon, or Chinese one. It was long, like a snake, and the color was of a deep coal black, his belly a dark red. The animal seemed to not be scaly though, but fury. Like a dog or cat maybe. It also had large wings right above the small frontal legs of it. The wings were a leathery black, large and flapping about to keep the animal upright. He had silver claws that extended out of its small arms. It also had a `mane' going down its back and whole body. It was a dark reddish brown, with some black mixed into it. The creature's heads was more like a dog or wolf and such than a dragon's head, like a mix between both species. Near the animal's muzzle like area, it had two long `whiskers' as you could call them, which traveled almost halfway down the body of it. They were like longed arms, that swayed more so than stood still. Some fish, like catfish, have these `whiskers' on their faces, but this beast's were much longer than the average fishes. Yugi stared up in awe at the dragon, but noticed its rapid and stressed movements. The creature seemed hurt, or in pain somehow. By the screeching of it, and repeated twists and turned it was making, that seemed valid. Yugi stood up more, watching the animal twist, and then suddenly it seemed to lose its ability to stay right up. Wings beating franticly, the animal seemed to lose its strength. Falling fast, the dragon hit the earth with a loud crash. Yugi, not even thinking of the danger this animal might inflict on him, ran over to the fallen animal. He ran near its head and kneeled down. He saw blood all along the others mouth, and its breathing irregular. Yugi looked all along the animal's body, trying to find the source of its pain. His eyes fell on the shoulder blade, right under the wings. A large thorn seemed to be wedged right in there. Yugi moved over to it, grasping the thorn, and pulled. Suddenly the creature screeched and screamed in pain, the snake like body flailing about, trying to recoil from the pain. Yugi had to jump back if he didn't want to be hit by the wings or tail. Soon, the other settled, its breathing still irregular and now the body of it was shaking in sheer pain. Yugi, now trying to take a different approach, moved back to the others head. He gently stroked the animal's nose and forehead. Now near it, Yugi could see just how bit it was. The head of it was around the size of a horse's head, just about two inches bigger though. Yugi continued petting the dragon's head.
“You don't have to be scared...” Yugi said softly to it. “It'll hurt to get that out, but I can do it, relax ok…” As if understanding, the dragons settled. Yugi smiled and nodded to it, and then moving back to where the thorn was, he locked a hand around the end.
“This'll hurt, just try and bear it,” he said to the animal. Taking in a breath, Yugi secured his grip and pulled. The dragon's head flipped to the ground, the sharp canines of it clenching in pain. A snarl of pain managed to pass that ones mouth. Yugi, knowing the sooner he got it out the less pain this poor animal would have to feel, yanked harder on the torn. Slowly, ever so slowly, it began to come out. Yugi moved his hands more to the base near the skin of the animal, dark blood pouring along his fingers and all over his hand. The other's ears lay back in pain, and another screech escaped it. Yugi, narrowing is eyes in concentration, found a good grip, and pulled the torn with all he had. The piece slid out fast, allowing Yugi to fall back as well, landing on the grass. Sitting up and throwing the piece of sharp wood aside, he looked to the wound that was already healing itself. Yugi looked up to the face of it, to see the animal had stood up and was looking at Yugi with kind, red eyes. They were…one of the most exotic things Yugi had ever seen. Their color was a mix between almost all of the reds in this world, intermixing with the animal's emotions. The pupils of it were mere slits like a snake, but held a certain carefree feeling and happiness. The other moved over, pushing his head up against Yugi's chest, a sound almost like a purr coming from it. Yugi couldn't help but smile, and pet it.
“What a strange animal you are,” he said. He could tell the other agree, since it nodded its head. Yugi looked down at it. “Are you a boy or a girl…” he smiled. “A girl…?” he heard the other grunt and the head almost knocked him over. Yugi laughed.
“A boy then, you are a male dragon…” he laughed more. “I made friends with a dragon.” The other nuzzled his chest, in a sign on affection and happiness. Yugi laughed again. The dragon if, he could, would laugh, as well it seemed. Yugi chuckled again, and continued petting him. They stayed like that, for what seemed to be about a ten-minute time. Yugi petting the creature and it purring in return for the attention he was getting. Though, the dragon then suddenly lifted his head up and looked up to the sky, ears twitching, as if hearing something. He then…smiled. The dragon was smiling. He moved back down to look straight into Yugi's violet eyes, sending an unsaid message of `We will meet again'. Then he moved away, his wings unfolding from his side and flapping in anticipation. Bending down slightly, the dragon suddenly shot off like a bullet from a gun. He streaked over the grass, then wings beating, he rose into the air, circling up, he few back over Yugi. Looking down at him, the creature let out a screech, the shot off. Flying higher and higher, till he was out of site.
*Flashback end*
Yugi almost jumped when he heard his name being called from outside the bathroom. Turning off the water, he looked out of the curtains to see Ryou there, a scowl on his face.
“Save some water for the fish Yugi! And ME for that matter!” Ryou yelled, throwing his roommate a towel. Yugi caught it, and placed it around his waist.
“Sorry Ryou, I kinda zoned out…” he muttered. The other boy nodded.
“You're telling me. Now let me take a shower,” he muttered. Yugi nodded and exited the bathroom. They really weren't a good mix for roommates in the morning. Neither of them were morning people. Yugi sighed as he walked to his drawer and opened it up. Taking out some clothes, he threw them on, and then walked over to his mirror to do his hair up. Yugi brushed it up, so it was neat and had no tangles. Yugi threw on some bracelets and a small necklace as well. Throwing his backpack over his shoulder, he walked to the bathroom. Knocking, he yelled out,
“I off for class Ryou k!” he heard an `ok' back, so Yugi exited the room. He sighed as he walked down the hallway.
“Man…I haven't had a flashback like that in ages,” he said, breathing out. Yugi, to be honest, was indeed from a wealthy family. His family had a lot of money. But did any of it go to their son…nope. No, but that's not because they hated this child. No they loved him for all they were worth…but death does that sometime. When both Mrs. and Mr. Motou died, they had not made up any kind of will, and Yugi was to young to take anything. The money had to go somewhere, or it could be stolen, so they gave it to his grandpa. Yugi smiled. His grandfather was such a nice person. He would have given Yugi the money when he was older, but once Yugi did get that age, his grandfather need the money more. Medical bills and everything else an elderly man needs. So, Yugi was left with not much, but he was happy. Then, came up the thing of collage. Yugi's grandfather immediately put his parents money into it. Yugi didn't want to go all rich, so he got a decent priced dorm and brought decant clothes. Yugi smiled more, the grin becoming devious. His family also got all this money because of a good reason. But it was a secret. A secret so…secret that if it got out, the whole Motou family would be ruined. Hunted down for the power they possessed. They were, in fact, not mortal at all. They were mages. Powerful mages, who were the most feared at times and at others the most worshiped. The Motou family, though many other mages exist around us, are the most powerful. Yugi being the youngest had to be the bearer of the secret; for if he said anything to anyone about it, he would be hunted down and killed by the Motou family. And, of course, school did not help! Being around people so much, his powers could easily be found, but Yugi was an expert at it. Trying to live in the most with mortals, Yugi managed to keep it a secret for a long time now. But, upon coming to this collage, everything changed. His classes became harder, his life more stressful, and keeping the secret was becoming even harder. And, ever since he came here, there was uneasiness around the area. Yugi could sense something, something almost as strong as his kin. But…it was shadowed. Darkened, and made to be invisible to his inner eye. Yugi had massive headaches from this presence, his mind never having to take on such a different magical aura. It was harder to concentrate, and sometimes, on certain days, his head would throb with unbelievable pain. Yugi, finally, managed to get some aspirin that he took on these days, so he made it through it. Yugi walked out of the dorm building and walked down the path to his first class. He looked down at his watch and gasped.
“What…!? It's already 7:30!!! Damnit!” he cursed, as he picked up speed again, and ran toward the building. Yugi looked around the field. Seeing no one there, he tapped into his magic to allow him to go faster. Suddenly, as the magic entered him, the horrible headache began. Yugi immediately slid to a stop, hands clutching his forehead in pain. That aura was near, and his magic was detecting it too much. Yugi tried to force his magic to go dormant, but it seemed to want for Yugi to sense the other being. Yugi, finally forcing the magic back, fell to the ground, breathing irregular and sweat pouring from his brow. Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and a melodic voice float around.
“Hey…are you alright Yugi?” the boy heard. Regaining his breath, Yugi looked up, to be staring right into crimson orbs. Yugi breathed, and then sighed.
“Y-yeah…yeah I'm fine…just a really bad headache,” as he was saying this, he took the aspirin out of his back pack and popped one into his mouth, swallowing it without any water. The other smiled.
“I'm glad, I was walking down here, and I suddenly saw you collapse. I was worried.” Yugi looked up at those kind eyes, and smiled.
“Heh, yeah…” he stood up, looking to the ground. “Thank you…for just…ya know,” he didn't know what to say. Atemu laughed that rich laugh.
“There you go, the thanking!” he grinned and winked at the boy. “I'm only doing what a friend would do.” Yugi smiled to the ground.
“So were friends then?” he asked. Atemu's laughter diminished slightly.
“I just said that didn't I?” he said. “If you don't want to be friends, that perfectly fine with me.” Yugi immediately jumped up and yelled a no.
“No! O-of course not! I want to be your friend Atemu!” The taller one laughed.
“Then don't question the things that you want,” he said. Yugi looked to the ground, a small smile on his face.
“Um…t-thank you…sorr-” his words suddenly stopped as a tan finger was placed in front of his lips. Yugi blinked and looked up into red eyes. Atemu smirked.
“I really have to do something whenever you apologize…” he said in a hushed whisper. Yugi felt heat rise to his cheeks at this, and then looking to the ground again, he half nodded. The finger was removed, and Atemu stood at his full height again.
“Well, I have to get to class now Yugi, see ya,” he waved, and turned to walk the other way. Yugi suddenly gasped, making Atemu turn back around to face him. The boy had his right hand up to his face, the other in front, for he was staring at his watch.
“Oh my god, I forgot about class,” he whipped around and ran. “My teacher is so going to kill me!” But, before Yugi even got two feet, an arm stopped. Yugi slide to a stop, and whipped around to stare at Atemu. The other held out a piece of paper in front of Yugi's face.
“Here,” he started. “Hand this to your teacher, and he'll let you off, but don't open it at all,” he instructed. Yugi took the paper at stared at it oddly.
“Wait…what is it…?” he asked. Atemu grinned.
“A well thought up excuse!” he said laughing. Yugi stared at him, eyebrows raised.
“And…you carry these around in your pocket…?” he asked slowly. Atemu shook his head.
“No, but I have to miss a lot of classes…for stuff that,” he suddenly went silent. Atemu's eyes averted to the ground, mouth ajar in shock what he almost just said. Yugi looked at Atemu's bent figure.
`He's trying to not say anything…he trying to keep a secret…' Yugi thought. `Like me…but…I wonder what his secret is…?' Yugi smiled, and waved the silence off.
“Don't worry Atemu, whatever it is, it's a secret right,” he said. Atemu's head shot up, his eyes wide and mouth gaping.
“…I…um…y-yes,” he muttered to the ground. “How…how did you know…I mean…” the other sighed. Yugi smirked, and patted Atemu's shoulder.
“Lets just say were very much alike Atemu,” Yugi said. He then turned to walk to class. Waving the note, he yelled, “I'll just take this then, and we can leave it at that! See ya at seven!” And at that said, Yugi was gone. Atemu swallowed, and sighed.
“To close to close…” he muttered. Turning and walking to his class, he let another large breath escape his lips.
`Were a lot alike…?' he thought, taking off of Yugi's previously said words. `But how…and…' Atemu stopped. `Something about him was…off. Different sort of aura around him…' The man sighed.
“God…my head is spinning at all this information,” he said, placing a hand on his forehead, running his fingers through his blonde locks. He sighed yet again, and continued his way to class.
*With Yugi*
Yugi walked down to his classroom. Not running, or trying to get there in a hurry. He clutched the note in his right hand, and a smile on his face. Though inside there was slight worry and curiosity he had from the note he got from his friend. Yugi looked down at it, tempting himself to open it. But, instead, he would head the other's words to not too. Yugi walked into the cool building of the music department. Cool air met his skin as he headed down to the orchestra room. He opened the door and walked in. The conductor looked over at him and gave him a glare.
“Mr. Motou where have you been?” he asked in a stern voice. Yugi walked up and handed him the note. The teacher opened it and read it over. Nodding, he threw it on his desk.
“Go get your instrument and get out here!” he said loudly. Yugi nodded, and ran into the room where they kept all the instruments. Reaching into a cubby, he took out his case and walked back out into the room. Placing it on the ground, he clicked open the case and took out his instrument. It was an old violin, one hand made in Egypt. Yugi was always fascinated with Egypt, and with a little extra work involved (for money) he was able to get it done there as well. An added bones on his violin, was a phoenix scroll. Usually they didn't have anything on there, but Yugi wanted that. So he has a phoenix scroll, and on the back of this well polished wood were engraved hieroglyphics. Yugi, in fact, knew vaguely what they said. It was a prophecy, or legend so the maker said. Yugi had never heard the fullness of it, but his grandfather insisted he put it on there. Yugi started translation some of it, but it seemed to be written in a script that was not known to any Egyptologists, because no matter how many books he got, he couldn't figure out what they said. He gave up eventually, but was still curious on what the legend was. Yugi took out his bow now, which was also made in Egypt. It was a wooden bow, and this also had some hieroglyphics carved into it. But these said all the gods of Egypt. Well, at least the well-known ones like Ra and Osiris. Yugi's bow hairs were also black, from an Arabian black stallion. Yugi rubbed some rosin over the hairs, and then placed the piece of hardened stuff back in his case. Standing up, he traveled to his seat at first chair. Yes, Yugi didn't spend that money on this violin to be in the back. No, he was first chair, concertmaster. The conductor glared at him slightly, but then turned back to the orchestra.
“Now that we have out concertmaster here, we are ready to start are we not?” he picked up the baton and raised his arms up, telling the players that it was time to play. Yugi lifted it up to his shoulder, resting his chin on the instrument. Raising his bow to the strings, the conductor's arms went down and they began to play. Their concert was going to be in this next week. They were playing a piece called The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, the movement of Spring. Yugi couldn't help but let a gin pass his lips as he was playing. In almost every piece there is, there will be a small violin solo throughout the music. And this one was Yugi's favorites. That was one thing Yugi lover about being in the orchestra and being first chair, everyone could hear you and it was the best feeling when you can play a solo right and with perfect confidence. Yugi, though, is used to this, being up in front of people. He did it so much; it didn't even phase him anymore. Soon, the song came to an end. The conductor turned to him, a smile on his face. The pervious coming in late looks gone; pleased with Yugi's playing.
“Very well done Yugi,” he congratulated the boy. Yugi grinned. He did notice, today he was playing better. His mind wandered slightly.
`What happened different today…I was late and ran into Atemu…' he blinked. `…Atemu…?' Yugi suddenly buried his head into his instrument. `A crush!' He screamed into his mind. `A crush on a boy!? What the hell is wrong with me…' he suddenly stopped this train of thought as the teacher instructed him to play something. Yugi, putting this behind him, played on, hoping to return to that dilemma later. When his mind was clearer, and maybe so he could have a few spoken words with Atemu and himself.
