Runaways and encounters

Sore eyed and stiff backed Glynn got up from her desk and hid the poem she had been working on for the last half hour, making a mental note to finish it when she got home. She made her way to the backyard, having gotten changed earlier and after a long, loud whistle Rillith, her Siberian Husky appeared running at full tilt towards her. After a few minutes she calmed down enough for the raven haired girl to secure the dark blue lead to her studded leather collar. After this Rillith renewed her jumping and barking.

"Shhh . . . do you want to wake everyone up?" Glynn asked the excited dog, her aqua eyes shining with joy as she watched Rillith run towards the gate.

Shaking her head she followed suit and in no time at all they were out the gate and down the road, both glad for the freedom.

The streets were deserted as they walked around, but that might have something to do with it being four in the morning. Glynn didn't have a particular destination as she had just moved to town; she had just felt frustrated and decided she needed a walk. Rillith suddenly turned and ran down a narrow street; pulling the lead from her hand and giving Glynn no choice but chase after her, calling the dogs name to no avail. Just as Glynn was sure she would collapse a park came into view.

"Rill?" she called uncertainly, shattering the early morning stillness.

An echoing bark answered her as she walked through the cast iron gates of the park, following the general direction of the noise.

While regaining her breath Glynn glanced down at her clothes and what she saw confirmed her fears that she would have to get changed before she could go to school, not only was she drenched in sweat but her pants had been splashed with mud as she had chased Rillith.

`When I find that dog I am going to kill her!' she thought, following yet another burst of excited barking and muttering an endless string of death threats and curses under her breath.

Glynn turned a corner in the path of grey stone; she imagined that it had once been well kept, but now weeds were growing through cracks in the cement and over the edge of the path, drastically altering the width of it in places. As she looked around she realized that the section of the park she was now entering looked much like the pat, unkempt and wild. Admiring the simple beauty of the place she was about to call out again when she heard another bark and a child's laughter coming from up ahead. The further along the path she went the louder the noises became until after rounding a bend in the path she spotted Rillith playing with a young boy that had a large amount of messy black hair and large dark blue eyes which were currently sparking with delight as he threw a stick and waited for Rill to bring it back.

Rillith spotted her and ran over barking excitedly but still managing to look sorry about running away. Glynn knelt down and taking the dogs head in her hands she looked it in the eyes.

"O.k. don't look at me like that, you're forgiven," she said after a couple of seconds, patting the dog on the head and throwing another stick.

As the dog chased it Glynn walked over to where the boy stood, joy still evident in his expression but his eyes looked deep and sorrowful now.

"Hey, I'm Glynn," she said, offering her hand. "Glynn Waters."

"Mokuba Kaiba" he said, taking her hand, "I guess she's yours?"

"Yeah," she answered, watching as the boy tuned to look at Rillith with an expression of longing now evident on his face.

"I was hoping she might be a stray," he said after a while, "but then I saw the lead."

Glynn changed her initial impression of the boy, he seemed to be only eight or nine years old, but from the way he talked he had to be much older. It wasn't so much what he said, Glynn decided after some thought, but the way he said it. She wasn't exactly sure what it was in his manner that gave him this quality but that didn't change the fact that it was there.

"Your parent's won't let you get a dog, huh?" she asked, making conversation as they continued to watch Rillith, who was now swimming around in a pond and chasing the ducks.

"Both my parents are dead," he stated with ease that came from frequent use or long knowledge, "It's my brother that won't get me a dog."

`That figures, the first person I meet here and I've already screwed up' Glynn thought angrily.

"Sorry," Glynn said.

"It's ok, I was really little and I can hardly remember them. Unfortunately Seto can." He said, again sounding older than he appeared. Sensing this was a touchy subject, as it would be for most people, Glynn decided to take a different approach.

"So, what are you doing out here so early Mokuba?" she asked, looking at her watch and seeing that it was almost 5:30.

"I just felt like a walk, I love this place. It's always quiet; nobody ever comes here, except me that it."

"Well, me too . . . that is if I'm allowed to."

"Sure, does that mean that she will be here too?" Mokuba asked, eyes shining with excitement and hope.

"Wherever I go, she usually goes. Rillith's my best friend, hell, she's my only friend," Glynn stated, a hint of bitterness creeping into her voice.

"Why?" Mokuba asked, either not understanding the word tact or being used to this sort of thing.

Glynn sighed and broke eye contact with the boy to look again at Rillith, "the truth is that my parents are dead, both of them. Car accident," she said, answering the unasked question of how. "Rill was the only thing I got to keep; everything else was taken away until I'm old enough to have access to it. Since then I've moved from one orphanage to another, going to a foster family for a few moths here and there until I finally got adopted by the Waters. I haven't really had time for friends."

"I'll be your friend if you want," Mokuba said.

Glynn turned to the small boy and gave him a genuine smile, the first real smile to be given to a human in a long time, "I would like that very much" she said, "How old are you anyway?"

"Twelve," he said proudly, "How old are you?"

"Sixteen," Glynn replied, "I'm almost seventeen though."

"My big brother is seventeen," Mokuba said, he was about to say something else when Rillith ran up and decided that they both needed a shower.

Laughing, they both stood up to pat the dog and Glynn announced that she had to leave. Mokuba's smile fell as the lead, which until now had lain forgotten beside the bench was clipped back onto Rillith's collar. Noticing this Glynn said,

"Tell you what; I'll come back here the day after tomorrow at around the same time."

"Really?" Mokuba asked.

"Really," Glynn confirmed before they said there goodbyes, both leaving in opposite directions to get ready for school.
